Lucien practiced trying to form the cool mist, but every time he did, it became more and more faint. After only six tries, he couldn’t do it anymore.
‘It’s not much, but it’s a start!’
Lucien looked at the numerous pathways around him that lead deeper into the cave.
He picked a random pathway out of the nine that he counted and walked towards it. At the mouth of the tunnel he stopped and examined the inside. Icicles hung from the ceiling and ice covered the floor and walls of the cave.
Lucien’s feet and hands started to go numb.
‘There has to be a way out, otherwise, how did that vazuron get in here?’
Step by step, he walked down the tunnel. It twisted and turned then started to head up. Lucien had to climb a seven-foot wall of ice in order to continue down the tunnel. Lucky, there were little ledges available for Lucien’s use, but they were very slippery.
While climbing, his left foot slipped out and he slid all the way back down, scrapping his hands and feet up.
His hands shook with pain. He turned them over to observe the cuts and scratches that were laced with blood. His fingertips took the most damage.
He looked up the steep wall then started the climb over. Slowly, he made his way up until he had one arm make it over the top. He pulled himself up and rolled onto the top.
After gathering his breath, he stood back up and continued down the tunnel.
It felt like hours had gone by, climbing and descending until he reached a dead end.
‘All that, and there’s no where else to go. You gotta be kidding me!’
Frustrated, he turned around and began to the long journey back towards the vazuron’s dead corpse.
He returned, tired and hungry, his hands and feet torn apart and bloodied.
Using the rock he had used to cut the vazuron open. he cut an ‘x’ on the wall next to the tunnel he had explored.
‘One down, eight to go.’
He sat down against the vazuron’s body to try and get warm, just as his stomach began to growl.
‘I’m so hungry.’
Looking at vazuron, he almost lost his appetite, but he knew he had to eat. The rock still in hand, he began to cut away at the vazuron’s flesh until he had a foot-long section of flesh. He began to eat it in big chunks, swallowing each whole.
His body shuddered from the horrible taste.
‘I don’t think I’m ever going to get used to this.’
The section of flesh he had cut out was finished, but he was still hungry. He began to cut away another section and ate it. Repeating this process, he ate until he was full, then fell asleep.
Waking back up, he ate the vazuron’s flesh again, which was now frozen, making it a bit more bearable to consume. Next, he tried to form ice again. This time he was able to form a small piece of ice in his hand that was a couple centimeters long.
‘Well, its not much, but it’s progress.’
He did this again and again and was able to produce the same size crystal eight times before it started to decrease in size each time.
‘Time to go exploring.’
He entered the tunnel next to the first one he explored and continued his search.
The tunnel twisted and turned just as much as the first, but after a while, it split into three more possible paths.
Lucien knew this was going to happen, but he still became frustrated at the sight before him.
He decided on the taking the right most path first.
This path continued down for what seemed like miles before Lucien came up to a wall of slick ice that stretched straight up a good fifty feet in the air.
‘There’s no way I’m climbing that.’
Lucien turned and began to head back in order to take a different path.
The path in the middle lead to another split. This time there were four more paths that Lucien had to choose from. However, he had already walked, climbed, and descended for so long that he was too tired to start on a new path. Hence, he headed back to his designated starting point.
…
Lucien repeated this process over and over again. After exploring a path to a dead end, he would cut a small ‘x’ next to the entrance as a marker for himself. Very slowly, he began to form a map in his head of all the paths he explored.
However, it was going too slow. He was still only on the second path from his starting point and had almost finished all he could eat of the vazuron. All that was left now were the bones and a small amount of flesh. It was very difficult, but he even forced himself to eat the organs as a source of nutrition. Its fur was even starting to decompose, leaving him without a source of heat.
On a good note, his taste buds slowly began to go numb to the awful taste of vazuron’s flesh. In addition, his magic power was slowly growing. With each and every practice session, he was able to make more and more ice.
‘I need more food; I’m going to run out in a couple of days.’
He started his exploring for the day, strolling down the second tunnel until he came to the path that split into three possible paths. The middle and right path he had already explored and deemed dead ends. Therefore, he headed down the left path.
As he was walking, he heard a slight rumble, but nothing was moving. He froze in his tracks and looked around him. The low rumble turned into a low growl that came from further down the path. It grew louder and louder.
From the shadows, emerged a vazuron, snarling, drool dripping from its long fangs.
‘Found my food source, but I’m also its food source.’
Another vazuron appeared, following the first.
‘Two?’
Lucien began to panic. He wasn’t sure that he could take two on at the same time.
The two vazurons stood side by side, ready to strike at any moment.
Lucien got ready, making sure that he had good footing.
The vazurons dug their claws into the ice and launched themselves at Lucien, one after another.
Lucien jumped with all his might at the last second to avoid the first vazuron as it snapped at him, then dug his fingers and toes into the ice to try and stop himself from sliding.
The second vazuron swiped at him with two of its arms. Lucien was barely able to avoid by jumping in between both arms, then flipped over mid air and landed on all fours.
‘What in the world? How did I just do that?’
The vazuron had turned itself around and pounced again, this time sweeping with its arms extended, Lucien ducked to avoid them, but the second vazuron made an attack while behind him.
Slash!
Lucien felt a searing pain as the vazuron behind him slashed his back open with its claws. The one if front of him then swiped at him with the back of its hand slamming him into the cave of the wall.
Lucien’s entire body throbbed in pain from the impact against the cave wall. His vision was blurry as well. Just as his sight cleared up again, the vazurons appeared in front of him and snapped at him with their mouths.
Lucien used all the strength hew had in his legs to push off of the wall and slid through a small opening between the vazurons.
‘If only I had a weapon!’
Lucien had a thought.
‘That’s right! A weapon!’
He clasped his hands together and focused his magic energy into his hands.
‘I’ve never tried this before, but no is as good a time as any!’
He pulled his apart and formed a sword made of ice.
‘Yes!’
Both vazurons turned to face him, then shot towards him yet again. Lucien dodged the first one and then held his sword out, sinking the end of it into the palm of the second vazuron who swiped at him.
The vazuron let out a yelp of pain before leaping back.
Sword in hand, Lucien ran towards the other vazuron, dodged a wild swipe from one of the vazuron’s arms and then slashed at another arm.
Crack!
‘No!’
His sword of ice broke on contact.
‘It wasn’t strong enough?’
Bam!
Another arm came crashing into Lucien, sending him rolling, then sliding along the ice thirty feet away.
Both vazurons regrouped with one anther and began to approach Lucien who was still lying on the ground.
‘No, I’m not going to die today! I need to restore my family name! I need to find out what the Ice monarch actually did and why he did it!’
Lucien stood back up and formed another sword.
“As long as its strong enough to stab, then I can win!’
The first vazuron to reach him slammed all of its arms on the ground, but Lucien was able to dodge and climbed up one of its arms and jumped in the air. He switched his grip on the sword as he descended and plunged the sword into the back of the vazuron’s neck.
The vazuron hissed in pain and knocked into the other vazuron as it came crashing down.
Lucien pulled it out then stabbed it back in again and again until the vazuron stopped moving, then jumped off.
The other vazuron looked at its dead partner and shifted its gaze back to Lucien, growling in anger.
Lucien was weak and breathing heavily.
“Come on you filthy wretch!” Lucien yelled.
The vazuron snarled and roared at him as it sprinted towards him.
Lucien ran towards it, jumped while avoiding its snapping mouth and thrusted his sword into its left eye.
The vazuron howled in pain, its blood spewing out.
Lucien formed another sword, leaving the other in its eye, and stabbed it into its side. He then pulled it out, climbed onto its back, then sunk the sword into its back before pulling it out and jumping off as the vazuron flailed around in pain, crashing into the side of the cave.
The vazuron groaned in pain, before collapsing, dead.
Lucien fell to his knees, completely exhausted.
‘That was too close. In order to survive, I must become a monster.’
After resting for a bit, he slowly stood to his feet, his entire body aching and blood dripping down his back. Now that he had relaxed, he realized just how cold he was.
He ripped off what was left of his shirt, which was now strangely tight on him now. He also noticed that his pants were too small for him now.
‘Did I grow?’
He knelt down beside the vazuron he just killed, then plunged his sword in its side and tried to cut it open, but the sword broke. He found a nearby rock and then used that to try and cut it open.
Its yellowish green blood began to pour out. Lucien held out his hand to touch the blood. It was very warm to the touch.
He knew it was disgusting and unclean, but he covered himself in its blood as a source of heat, then began to eat its flesh since he was very hungry after the energy he had just expended.
After he ate his fill, he decided it would be easiest to just leave the bodies here for now until he found the dead end to the pathway he was in.
Boom!A blast sounded off through the entire forest as a man emerged from near the foot of a mountain with nothing on except for a pair of dirtied, torn up shorts that reached just above his knees. His hair was white, scattered, and reached down to just below his shoulders and covered his eyes. He stood very tall, at least 6’3”, and his muscles were very lean and chiseled with the occasional scar here and there. The man had a frighteningly chilly aura about him, making everything around him began to frost over as he walked through the forest to an unknown destination. Even the animals avoided him.Roar!A bear, commonly known as Brinit, that stood nearly twelve-foot-tall with very sharp claws, appeared before the man and r
Lucien strolled through town slowly until he came across a tavern named Calver Tavern. He decided to try regular food. He wondered what it would taste like since he had nothing but monster meat for six years. He sat down at a table and waited for the waitress to notice that he had sat down. The place was very noisy as it was crowded with people drinking, talking, and joking. The waitress was a beautiful woman with hazel eyes and shoulder length brown hair. She was wearing what looked to be a maid’s black dress. She walked over to him slowly since she was a little concerned that she couldn’t see his face because of his hood.
Lucien was headed back to the inn he was staying at to store his payment in his room, but he saw something that piqued his interest: A bank.Lucien had no idea that such a thing existed until he saw the sign outside of a tall dome building with columns all made of pure marble. What caught his attention was the wording underneath ‘Stria City Treasury Bank’: A safe place for your earnings. The building was surrounded by hired guards that patrolled the outside of the bank.Lucien stepped inside to see that the inside was also being patrolled by more guards and there was a marble counter that split the building in half. Behind the counter stood the clerks.Lucien approached one of the clerks.
To everyone’s surprise, Lucien walked through the guildhall’s doors… alone. Instantly, a flow of conversation erupted through the guildhall.“Didn’t he go on a job with Mikal’s team?”“Yeah, I wonder where they are.”“Is that blood on his cheek?”“That looks like the same cloak that Mikal wore.”“Did something bad happen?”“Maybe.”“He’s probably the only survivor after the run in with the dragon.”“That d
“That siagan was really giving you a rough time wasn’t it?” a woman wearing silver armor prodded.“Oh, shut up Christine! I was just… playing around with it before I killed it, that’s all,” spluttered a young man with two small daggers and wearing a dark brown clock that only covered the top half of his torso.Christine giggled as the party of four she was in just finished up with their hunting job.“Ashon, Christine, cool it. It’s time to head back,” ordered a more mature man with ginger hair and beard.“Is it ok if we stop by a tavern before heading to the guild, Alexander. I’m hungry,” asked a small young woman wearing an archer’s hood and carrying
They warriors all charged at the miremog.Archers shot their arrows as the assassins slashed at the legs. The miremog made swipes, but the assassins took cover or dodged in time.Kaboom!A group of mages banded together and combined their magic into one powerful blast of magic that collided into the stomach of the massive creature. The magic blast left a hole a couple of feet deep in the miremog. Despite it not blasting through it, this still gave many of the warriors hope.‘That actually did some damage!’“Healers focus your efforts on the mages! Everyone else, make sure the monster doesn’t wipe the mages ou
Lucien walked with nothing but a single map in hand that a small shop owner gave to him as a gift when he explained that he needed it but didn’t have the necessary funds to buy it.‘The council members failed to mention that they confiscated all the money I earned. Greedy pigs. Oh, well. At least I’m A-Rank. Now I earn a salary from the Monarchy.’He had planned on buying a horse at the very least to make the trip faster and easier. Now, he couldn’t even buy any food to take with him on his journey. He decided to stop at the next city and collect his salary from the next guild he saw and buy what he needed then. For now, he kept putting one foot in front of another as he traveled alone along the dirt road that reached towards the southeast.
“I’m sorry, but that job request was cancelled recently,” the receptionist sighed.“I’m still taking it.”“You know that you won’t be paid for it, correct?”“Correct.”Lucien looked for an address in the job request, which was listed on the bottom. After finding this information he headed back out of the guildhall and towards the inn he was staying in.Up in his room, he laid in his bed and stared at the job request as he thought about his parents.‘Don’t worry mother, father. I’ll head home as soon as I figure out what happened to these kids. Just h
Seeing Alisha’s dead body on the ground, Lucien turned back towards the battle still going on between the revolutionary army and the Monarch’s forces. ‘Now to take care of the rest…’ Lucien’s eyes glowed as he raised his right arm and extended his hand with his fingers spread out. The temperature began to drop immediately and a few soldiers in the back watching the fight go down in the front line felt their bodies begin to go numb. As they wondered what could possibly be causing this, a few saw their skin begin to freeze and turn black and began experiencing symptoms of frostbite. Some began to scream as they saw this on their skin and their skin began to burn due to the extreme cold. The screaming would continue until their lungs and vocal cords froze and they stood completely still and silent. Some of the soldiers hearing the screaming turned around to see why they were hearing it and were more confused by the sudden stops. T
‘This can’t be… Alston killed by Lucien? How…’“Stay back!” Alisha yelled as he drew another arrow and shot it straight at Lucien.Lucien limped forward and extended his good arm again.Clap! The arrow disappeared as Lucien breathing became even heavier. Lucien stumbled and fell to his knees, but he never once took his eyes off of Alisha.‘He may have killed Alston, but it is obvious that he is close to death himself, so why am I so afraid of him?’Alisha franticly drew more arrows, unleashing them all upon Lucien. The numerous arrows were deflected and ended up destroying Alisha’s own troops as Lucien tried saving some magic power. Neutralizing them took more out of him, but in this way, Lucien was able to cause the deaths of the enemy soldiers.Lucien was now lying on the ground as he used up an enormous amount of energy to deflect them all.‘I&r
As soon as Alston yelled, the Monarch’s forces let out a roar and charged forward. As they did, Alisha drew her bow and arrow and aimed at the center of the Revolutionary army forming a massive magic arrow. She allowed the string to slip through her fingers and the arrow shot off with massive energy behind it.The Revolutionary army watched as the arrow screamed towards them. It grew bigger and bigger in their vision, and they felt death was just around the corner as they closed their eyes. There was a loud sound like that of a thunderclap and then a blast of wind as the ground beneath their feet shook. The Revolutionary army opened their eyes with confusion to see a cloud of smoke where the arrow just was.Lucien stood before them, staring at the Monarch’s forces as they continued to charge forward.Alisha couldn’t believe her eyes as anger began to boil within her.‘He blocked that?! That shouldn’t even be pos
The plan to let the Princess be the face of the proposed revolution was a great success as many people form Alophia gathered in the city square in front of a rather makeshift platform that was thrown together to hear what she had to say.Roseline stepped onto the stage and the crowd grew silent.Using magic, she amplified her voice so she could be heard amongst all the onlookers.“Thank you, people of Alophia city, for coming out to day to hear my proclamation. As you know, I am Princess Roseline of Verglacia. I have come to let you know about the wrongdoings of my father. Did it seem strange to you, all the wars we were fighting with the other nations seemed to give no results, other than throw away the lives of our soldiers?”She paused and the crowd began agree, some shouted while others just nodded their heads.“It did to me. With further investigation by a colleague of mine found out about a certain ore the Monarch has been g
“Hey man! What did you talk with Roseline about?” Kalin whispered as he sat down next to Lucien.“I apologized to her,” Lucien answered simply as he looked at her as she picked and ate some berries nearby with Gloria.“Are you sure that’s all? I heard some yelling and moaning? You didn’t do anything to the princess of Verglacia did you?” Kalin prodded as he nudged Lucien with his elbow.“Come on Kalin. Give it a rest. She was just setting me straight is all. I was at a pretty low point last night. I was ready to give up, but now I know what I need to do. We need to get to Elesron and gather supplies first.”“What might that be?”Lucien looked at Kalin and smiled, “I’m going to leave him with nothing, just like I was.”Before Kalin could ask what he meant by that, Lucien stood up and began to walk in the direction of Elesron.“Let’s go
Kalin coughed as he lay on the forest floor, or what was left of it. His vision adjusted and saw uprooted trees as well as splinters of wood and dirt everywhere.‘One shot did this?’Refocusing his attention on his objective he got to his feet to see that Roseline and Gloria were struggling to theirs as well.“Is everyone ok?” Kalin asked.“I’m alright,” Gloria answered.“No, look at Lucien!” Roseline pointed out.Lucien’s skin continued to grow darker as his body began to freeze up.“We need to hurry! Where are the horses?” Kalin yelled.“One was killed the other two ran off,” Gloria explained. They began to hear shouts coming from the direction of the capital nearing their position.“SHIT!” Kalin quickly picked Lucien up onto his shoulders and began to run off, the girls close behind. They dodged fallen trees,
Lucien pushed Roseline, who was still crying, off of him and began to walk forward.“A-a-ah! I wouldn’t move any closer or I will have them killed here and now,” the Monarch warned.Lucien stopped as the guards pushed the swords closer to his parent’s necks, drawing blood.“Why?!” Lucien shouted. “Why are you doing this?! I’ve done everything you asked me too!”“Why? I’ll tell you. You’ve become too influential, and you know too much,” the Monarch answered simply.“Know too much?”“Don’t answer as if you don’t know anything. I saw you near that room. No one is able to get there except me due to the spell cast on it. However, you were able to. You also know about the altrite and its actual purpose. You are too smart not to but two and two together by now. That is why I am going to have you disposed of. You took away the hearts of my peo
Kalin made the first move and quickly rushed forward and threw a jab.Lucien tilted his head out of the way and countered with a fist thrown towards Kalin’s side. However, before Lucien’s fist connected, he felt Kalin’s arms wrap around Lucien’s head and was yanked down causing him to miss. Instead, he felt Kalin’s knee drive up into his stomach.Kalin then threw Lucien onto the ground and pounced. Lucien avoided and swept Kalin’s legs out from under him. While Kalin was on the ground. Lucien drove his elbow into Kalin’s chest with such force, Kalin felt the bones there break in half as well as the floor crack under him.‘Fuck! It hasn’t been a minute and I feel like I was run over by an entire caravan!’Kalin, out of desperation, grabbed onto Lucien and then threw Lucien over him with his leg, allowing him to get up.Just as he got up, Lucien swung his foot in a big sweeping motion
…A few weeks later, within the capital…The people of the capital were bustling around with news of recent events. No one couldn’t help but bring it up. Two women were doing this rather loudly…“Did you hear most of the guilds are signing the order that went out?”“Yes! I have also heard that others decided to just disband themselves rather than go through with the signing. But what was most interesting to hear was that for the ones that refused to do wither of those was destroyed by Sir Lucien Verglas!”“I know! Did you hear about the first city he forced into submission? Anyway, he froze up the entire town and then demolished their guilds! A bit extreme I think…”A man who overheard their conversation then joined in.“It’s not like that was the furthest he went,” the man explained. “I heard that after he destroyed a guild hall in a d
