The days that followed, horror seemed to kiss the earth join which Kai walked.
His life in the Ross mansion became a tale of woes.
“At the beginning, it was just your parents being mean to me,” he tried appealing to his wife, “I thought it had to do with that fact that we were just newly married . But now, you seem to have joined the wagon. What did I ever do to you?”
His eyes were glistening with tears as he bore his heart out his bratty wife who did not care how he felt.
“What you did is becoming an option for me. I never loved you, Kia and I can never love you. You are not in my league.”
Her words were delivered with absolute detest for him and it was clearly spelt out in the way she crafted the words.
“We were good together, we laughed and we played and you said you loved me,” Kia squealed, his voice shaking as he fought back the tears that threatened to roll down his cheeks.
“Stop it! Stop reminding me of my woes! I hate the fact that I will forever be numbered as your wife.”
“Am I that disgusting to you?” Kai asked, staring at her with pain in his eyes.
“You are beyond disgusting! I hate you so much that the thought of you makes my skin burn.”
Her eyes were not lying because they carried disdain and contempt.
Kai took back his words. He could see how agitated she was becoming and did not contribute to her discomfort.
“I am sorry,” he pleaded, getting up to leave their bedroom.
“The only sorry I will accept is a well made lunch with some fresh juice.”
“But we have got cooks for that purpose. I could le…”
“Are they on your payroll? Do you pay the cooks, you aberrated fellow! Get the hell out of here and get me a nicely cooked meal.”
Kai looked dumbfounded. He could not hide his shock at the sudden change in expression and disposition towards him since the business dinner night.
He simply nodded in obeisance and walked out of her bedroom.
His life became a toll of pain and exhaustion.
He spent his days serving his wife and her family and his nights languishing in need for his wife who would never let him touch her romantically.
“Stop touching my stainless skin with your dirty hands! I cannot have you poison my baby with your weak penetration!” Scarlet had mocked him one night and he simply pulled away and rolled out of the bed to the couch.
It was dreadful days and lonely nights.
The next day, the whole members of the Ross family all got up and got dressed for a gathering in the city. Kai was surprised that he was not informed.
“Where is everyone going to?” He asked his wife Scarlet.
“A family function,” she replied without even lifting her face from the makeup mirror to look at him.
“Why was I not informed about it? I didn't get myself prepared.”
It was then that Scarlet lifted her eyes to him and rolled it scornfully.
“Did you hear who I said this outing is for?”
Kia muttered, “Family?” gazing at her with confusion.
“Are you family?” She asked again, twitching her lips. “This is for a family known for its prestige and wealth. Where do you belong in any of these mentioned qualities?”
The thought of him walking with her to the party as her husband filled her with loathing.
“You cannot say such horrible things to me, Scarlet. I am your husband.”
“And I am a woman who wishes she made better choices and not choosing a broke and lowly man! Get out of my bedroom!” She ranted, throwing her makeup brush at him angrily.
Kia could feel the intensity of her rage and instantly knew that the best thing for him to do is to walk away from her.
He was feeling downcast as he took the strides out of their bedroom, wandering if things would ever get better between them.
He was in the living room when the entire family walked out, looking all dressed and glowing.
He shifted his gaze from their haughty glances as he watched them from the corners of his eyes leave for the gathering.
They had all left and he was about to let out a sigh when the door reopened and Valentina appeared at the door, holding the handle and poking her head in.
“Whatever you do, make sure you tidy up this house, clean up the entire house and then whoop up dinner.”
Kia listened to her with a slap of embarrassment, wondering how he ended in such a controversial life.
“Were my instructions properly noted?” she asked with a forceful tone and Kai responded, “yes ma'am!”
She gave him a scathing look before shutting the door with a bang.
Kai looked out through the window and when their luxury cars had driven out of the yard, he exhaled sharply, letting the tears that had been looming to flow out freely.
He got busy cleaning and cooking as he was instructed by his mother in-law.
He could not believe what he had been reduced to.
He eventually made dinner and set the table for them so that they would have their dinner upon arrival.
A little before 8;pm, he saw the headlights flashing through the windows and he rushed down to the living room to let them into the house.
They were all chit chatting and laughing boisterously ; a sign that they must have had the time of their lives at the dinner.
He rushed to the door and opened it up for them to let them in.
Scarlet pushed him away from the doorway while Valentina heaved a sigh, giving him a scathing look.
William walked passed and shook his head, “how is this low life the first face I see after the wonderful dinner time spent outside?”
“Honestly, it sickens me too,” Valentina chimed in.
Kai stood by the door, staring at them with shock etched on his face. He could not believe how much they loathed him.
“I am starving and I need a good meal.”
“Tell me the dinner I instructed you to make is ready.”
Kai nodded gently and walked over to the kitchen to dish dinner.
He set it all on the table. He couldn't believe that he was now the cook, making dinners and serving his wife's family.
It felt surreal for him but he was out of options.
“For your sake, I hope this tastes good,” William yabbed him, seated beside his wife.
Kai pulled out a chair beside Scarlet to sit but was quickly reprimanded by her.
“What are you trying to do?” She asked him with a stern look at him.
“Sit for dinner?” he replied, gazing at her with a dazed expression.
“Sit where? With my prestigious family? You are a peasant and you are not welcome here! Get down to the floor or lock yourself in the bedroom please!”
Her words, the delivery of those words, the haughty stares directed at him and the sneer from her father were all an indicat
