CHAPTER 4

Backwards to the past.

Kai was carrying the office files and folders across the hall to William's office.

He was hasty because he had taken so much time to deliver the task he was given by his boss.

William had called him on the intercom earlier and slammed him with harsh words.

“I think I might reconsider your employment here, Kai! You are as slow as a snail now. Get me those files before the twinkle of an eye!”

“Yes sir!” Kai responded hastily and gathered the files without sorting them and began to race down the hall like he was being chased by a team of masquerades.

He was breathing so hard and a mist of perspiration glistened on his forehead.

He had pulled out his handkerchief to wipe his brows and did not see himself ramming into a lady that stood before him by William's door.

Before he could apply caution, their bodies bumped into each other causing his papers to scatter all over the place.

“I am so sorry…” Kai apologised, trying to gather his papers whilst avoiding contact with the CEO who was also standing by the door.

“Are you usually this clumsy?” The lady asked with a smirk.

“That is what I have to suffer everyday in Kai's hands. He is the clumsiest person I have ever seen in my life.”

“I am so sorry sir,” Kai continued with his apologies, ignoring the horrible comments that were being thrown at him both by William and the lady whom he would eventually discover was Scarlet, Williams only child and the heir to his wealth.

“Get into that office and leave those papers on my desk. For your sake, I hope all I need is in there.”

Kai scuttled to the office and left the documents on the table and then walked out hastily without looking back. However, from the corners of his eyes, he caught a glimpse of Scarlet's gaze fixed on him.

“Why is the boss' daughter gazing at me in that manner?” He ruminated, trying so hard to shrug off thoughts of any possible admiration.

Kai had barely returned to his office and sat down when he heard his door push open.

“I am sure you knew I would follow you to your office,” she uttered, walking into the office with so much confidence.

“Why is she here?”

“Am I causing a nuisance?”

Kai started to say “yes” but when he remembered who it was, he shook his head. 

“It is just that I have got a pile of work to do and I do not want to remain in Mr. Ross' bad books.”

Scarlet's eyes were filled with admiration for the gentleness he possessed.

“I like a man who is full of gentleness,” she said with a smile and Kai found himself smiling back at her.

Something about her was intriguing and he found himself feeling elated with her presence.

“If that is a compliment, then thank you,” Kai replied and looked away from her.

“Won't you ask me to dinner?” She casually asked, tracing the edges of his table with her long and slender fingers.

“You are my boss's daughter. I should not be seen with you.”

“I am having a hard time placing that sentence as polite or insulting.”

Kai lifted his head and caught a clearer glimpse of her beautiful face. Her striking features and her golden hair.

She was indeed beautiful and enchanting and he could not help but want her.

But a part of him still knew that she was way out of his league.

“It isn't an insult, it is a reminder that I am not in your league and you may want to look elsewhere.”

“Aww, such a cutie,” she mewed and sat on his table.

“I could earn you a time out of work for the next one week, with pay. I see how stressed you are with my father's nags and complaints and I say, you deserve rest.”

Kai looked at her with awe, wondering if it was a trap.

“Is this a trap?” Kai asked, gazing at her with expectations.

“Oh… is that why you are being standoffish? Why would you ever think of something that ridiculous?”

Kai smiled at her. Something about her was warm and he felt like he would like to know more about her.

With that conviction, Kai threw caution to the wind and nodded to her proposal.

It did not end in a nod, the nod birthed a relationship that blossomed into a heated romance.

Soon, Kai and Scarlet became an item. They would hang around often and walk around the office complex hand in hand.

Word about them began to travel and Kai became every young man's enemy.

But his friends were not feeling that way about him and Scarlet and they were not keeping their thoughts away from him.

“You cannot want this, Kai. Do you know the implications of dating the boss's daughter?” Kendrick cautioned, gazing at him with pity.

“Why can't you just be happy for me, Kendrick? Why do I feel that you always wanted her but never got her.” Kai was teasing him but Kendrick meant what he was saying.

“I have never looked at her in that way. I have always known that having anything to do with a Ross means I walking into a suicide mission. Kai, this will definitely not end well.”

Kai felt a surge of anger in his chest when he heard those words.

“You cannot say that! That is an awfully wrong thing to say.”

He was pissed and could not hide his expression.

“I am sorry if this came out badly but I didn't mean it that way. May I ask, what is the end point of this relationship?”

Kai was hesitant because he was worried that Kendrick would try to discourage him.

He could already see the opposition in Kendrick's eyes even as he awaited the response.

However, he answered.

“We are going to get married in a private ceremony.”

As he let the words slip out, he felt a pang of realisatio

n that he was wrong.

Kendrick turned to him with his eyes bulging with shock.

“Are you insane Kai?”
