Hypnathos shot backwards to create enough distance between him and Liam, needing time to activate his authority. He couldn't rely on Liam being naive, but thankfully, Liam didn’t seem intent on stopping him.

Hypnathos grinned, closing his eyes and pointing his palm at Liam. In any other scenario, Liam might have thought he was gearing up for an energy blast—if such a thing even existed.

"Be careful."

Jane's voice echoed in Liam's ear from kilometers away. He had no idea how she could defy the laws of physics like that, but he promised himself to ask her about it once this was over.

The air around them grew heavy, startling Liam from his reverie. The space between him and Hypnathos seemed to warp. The boulders Liam had been lifting hung suspended in midair without the aid of his aura. The bubbling lava cooled into black igneous rock. Liam felt the pressure mounting and considered breaking the unwritten rules of combat to interrupt Hypnathos' power-up. But he decided against it.
