Chapter 4, An unordinary Liam.

"Big bro, a girl is at the door and she says she’s a friend of yours.”

The yell of the twelve-year-old could be heard all over the multi-million-dollar mansion.

The audible scream startled Liam awake from his slumber, causing him to tumble down the bed together with his sheets.

“Fuck.”

Liam cursed.

He forced his way up, defying gravity while rushing into the bathroom. Barely five seconds later, he burst through the bathroom door with a brush and toothpaste still in his mouth. He ran over to the wardrobe and picked out a random shirt and trousers.

Just as he was about to put them on, he remembered the toothpaste and the water droplets that were on him. “Fuuuuuuck.”

...

Meanwhile, downstairs a teenage black-haired girl awkwardly sat on the sofa accompanied by twelve-year-old Julie, Liam’s younger sister.

“So, how did you two meet?” Julie asked with her childish voice.

“We met in school, and for the hundredth time, we aren’t dating, okay?” The black-haired girl said with an exasperated expression.

“Alrighty then, but if you aren’t dating, why did you come over to walk to school together?” She questioned once more, completely ignoring the "just kill me" look on the girl's face.

“Well, it’s because we’re friends.” The girl answered begrudgingly.

“Oh.”

Just as Julie was about to continue her interrogation, Liam came dashing down the stairs with a backpack in hand. He surprisingly looked tidy overall, as if the time he took to get ready and the time he woke up from bed wasn’t just two minutes.

“Hey, Bell. Sorry to keep you waiting. Hey, Julie, see you tonight.” Liam said as he made it into the living room.

“I assure you I do not mind at all.” Bell said as she hurriedly grabbed her backpack and ran away with Liam, as if little Julie was a danger to her mental sanity.

Liam rode on his skateboard while Bell pedaled her bike as they wheeled towards the school.

The school was not by any means small in scale or reputation. In fact, it was one of the most expensive schools in town, and the average student was dropped at the gate with Ferraris or Lamborghinis, making Bell and Liam a sour sight to behold as they simply went to school like normal kids would.

......

Kings College, the school, is an educational institute owned by Liam’s family, built for wealthy kids like him. Hence, the number of students per class is basically lower than eight.

The school looked more like a rich kid hangout than an actual school, for it's equipped with stores, gaming centers, and even mansions for hire. The school seemed like a mini city for spoiled teenage rich kids.

Classes start at nine in this school, with no morning assemblies or school bells. Instead, notifications are sent to the students via their phones, and at this moment, both Bell and Liam received one.

“I’ve got English class, what about you?” Bell asked Liam after checking her phone.

“Chemistry,” Liam said with a teary look.

“Don’t worry, you’ll live.”

Bell said with a soft chuckle.

...

Suddenly, the phone Liam held was snatched out of his hands by a robust-looking kid. The kid might be massive, but he wasn’t much younger than Liam and Bell. He was in his last year of high school just like them, and clearly, they were acquainted, and not in a good way.

“What do you want, Max?” Liam asked coldly.

“What, can’t take a joke, O’Neil?” The boy laughed menacingly before he dropped the phone to the ground and stepped on it until the screen shattered.

At this point, both Liam and Bell had chilly looks on their faces. Max was a well-known bully in school, and being the son of the Chief Justice made him even harder to deal with.

Bell held Liam back as he was clearly about to start throwing punches.

“Back off, pal.” Bell said with crossed brows while standing defensively in front of Liam.

Max snorted in disdain and glared provocatively at Liam. “What’s up, O’Neil? Still mooching off women?”

“Yeah, and so what? It simply proves that I’m not an asshole like you, Max.”

Liam’s words were just as chilly as his gaze, but Max wasn’t really intimidated. He knew Liam since they were kids. In fact, they got along pretty well back then, but not so much anymore.

Max’s phone vibrated as a notification came in. He didn’t even look but simply gazed condescendingly at Liam one more time before walking away.

“What the hell is his problem?”

Bell picked up Liam’s phone and handed it back to him before inquiring.

“Sorry, it’s a long story,” Liam said with a sigh.

Bell shook her head. “Wanna talk about it?”

“I’d rather not.”

“Oh... hope it still works?”

Bell said queasily, but Liam simply shook his head. Expensive phones break easily to begin with, and he even stepped on it just to make sure. In short, the phone was done for.

“Well, so much for classes, I guess,” Liam said with a free-spirited smile.

Bell felt like smacking Liam’s head, but if he didn’t receive notifications, then there’s really no knowing which class to go to.

“Wait for me till I’m done, at least,” Bell said with an eye roll.

Both Bell and Liam eventually had to go their separate ways for now. Liam still went to chemistry class. As much as he hated it, he still saw the notification, but after the class, he didn’t receive any more. Well, he did, but he couldn’t see them, which was basically the same thing.

Liam found a gaming center in the school and started playing round after round until he finally got fed up and decided to take a hike outside of school. Bell told him to wait for her, but it was still nearly three hours before school closed.

Liam strolled patiently through the streets of Washington, the state’s seat of power. He casually took in all the random passersby going about their daily lives, and just for a moment, he thought how fun it would be to just be one of the passersby, to be considered just part of the normal masses.

Eventually, Liam found himself staring at a building a block away. The building was massive and eye-catching even in Washington. Atop the building, there was a sign, a very well-known sign that read, TECHON.

Liam silently stared at the building until the sun went behind it. In the end, all he could do was sigh. Liam prepared to leave and head back to the school before Bell finished her last class, but it was at that moment that the sight of a slightly older woman in a lab coat appeared in his line of sight. The girl was running towards him at full throttle with several men in black following behind her.

“Who in the bloody hell is that?”

Liam murmured to himself, but the person in front clearly had no intention of stopping even as Liam stood at the end of the alleyway.

The figure got bigger in nearly an instant as the person ran for dear life.

“Shit.” Liam cursed as he hurriedly raised his hands in surrender as the girl came crashing down on him.
