Long live Superman

Dejected, Kyle was walking on the road with strange thoughts in his heart. He just kept on walking unconsciously and was deep in thought. He walked onto the major road and two cars were fast approaching.

It was a gang of kidnappers trailing their target at full speed.

With their target getting away, the kidnappers started shooting sporadically to cause a distraction and slow down their target. The sound of the gunshots made Kyle snap out of his thoughts and he realized what was happening.

At first, his survival instincts prompted him to run to safety but as he turned to look at the scene one more time, he saw a man in his early 70s in the car being chased down. Apparently, he was the target of the kidnappers and they were closing in on as their distraction tactic worked as they had planned.

“I have to save this man,” Kyle said to himself and returned to the scene.

Kyle had a solid background in self-defence training as it was one of the requirements to get into Beckerley University and now it was time for him to utilize it. The scene was deserted as everyone fled after hearing the gunshots. Kyle turned and saw a bike, got on it and joined the chase.

He knew every nook and cranny of the city and could navigate through it even with his eyes closed so he took a shortcut and came out right in front of the kidnappers with the other car right ahead.

With their target getting away, the kidnappers shot at Kyle severally without success and they all got out of the car to face him.

“Who the fuck are you and why are you in our way?” One of them asked.

“Look! Our target is getting away,” another cautioned.

“We can’t afford to lose him. The boss will kill us,” a third said, fidgeting.

“Let’s take care of Superman and then proceed to take down our target,” a fourth added and cocked his gun.

Kyle had grabbed a metal along the way and used it to protect himself from the gunshots. He started his bike and escaped through another route. He met the old man and his driver at a dead end and helped them onto the safe side of the road. The driver had driven down there out of fear and confusion.

“You can’t leave now. My guess is that those guys are still somewhere around,” Kyle advised.

“Now what do we do?” asked the old man with fear written all over his face.

“I want to see my family again. This can’t be the end,” the driver said, shivering.

“Don’t worry sirs. Everything will be alright. You’re safe here. Let’s wait around for about an hour and then we’ll take a shortcut to the main road. There’s no signal here so we can’t call anybody for help,”  Kyle replied.

He set up a little resting spot for the two men while he kept watch the whole time. After about an hour and half, Kyle helped the men up and they got out to the main road. They called the emergency number and in no time, they had company. It was the emergency service.

Kyle was surprised at the enormous respect the old man was accorded by the emergency service officials as he narrated their ordeal. “Maybe because he’s a senior citizen,” Kyle thought and looked away. He turned to the old man and said, “I’d like to leave now.”

“Please wait. You can’t leave just like that,” the old man remarked.

“You can’t leave sir. There’s blood all over your left leg. We have to check that,” a member of the emergency service advised.

Kyle looked down to see for himself but before he could say a word, he passed out. He had sustained a bullet wound during the incident and he did not even notice. He was losing so much blood and was immediately rushed into the ambulance.

Kyle didn’t wake up until the next morning. He opened his eyes and what he saw shocked him. He was in a big room filled with the best medical equipment from big brands around the world. He had only seen them in Science books and on the television.

“How did I get here?” he wondered.

“Hello. Anyone here?” Kyle shouted as he was all alone in the room.

A nurse walked through the door and calmed him down.

“Now you’re awake. Please be a little patient while I get to the doctor,” she appealed.

“A nurse? Where am I and how did I get here?” Kyle thought as he waited for the said doctor.

In a few minutes, the doctor walked in and addressed Kyle.

“Hello young man. We’re happy to have you back. Fortunately, it was just a flesh wound and the bullet has been removed. Please cooperate with us as we administer your medications.”

“Where am I and how did I get here? I can’t afford this high-class medical treatment,” Kyle said and shed a tear.

“Please relax, sir. This is Nextcare Medicals and you were brought in here yesterday following an emergency. As per your bills, there’s absolutely nothing to worry about because they have been fully sorted.” the doctor answered with a smile.

“By who?” Kyle asked curiously.

“Sir Kirby has sorted the bills and he’d like to have a chat with you. We will put a call through to him now to tell him you’re awake and once he comes around, you will be duly informed. Till then, please get some rest,” the doctor answered.

Kyle thanked the doctor multiple times and turned to have some rest.

Later in the day, a nurse walked in and met Kyle already awake.

“Sir Kirby would like to see you,” said the nurse.

“Yes please. Let him in,” Kyle replied and sat up. He was ready to meet the man who footed his hospital bills without knowing him from Adam.

“Hello my boy,” a voice said to Kyle, interrupting his thoughts.

It was the old man whom Kyle had saved from the kidnappers the previous day.

“Hello sir. It’s so good to see you again. Are you okay?” Kyle asked worriedly.

The old man replied, “I should be asking you that question, boy. Are you okay?”

“Yes I am. Are you Sir Kirby?” Kyle asked.

“That’s what people around here call me. I am Darren Kirby. What’s your name?” asked the old man.

“I am Kyle Hughes. Thank you for footing the bills sir,” Kyle said respectfully and tried to get off the bed to thank the old man even more.

“No. Thank you for saving my life. Who knows what those rascals would have done to me,” the old man replied and proceeded to hug Kyle tightly.

“Carefully,” the doctor warned. “he’s still not fully recovered yet.”
