"I don't think there is anyone here. Look at the overgrown grasses and the dirty environment."
"Let's go inside... Anyone here!"
"Hello!"
The front door was unlocked, and the two officers stepped inside and peered all around.
"Anyone here!"
The sound of scurrying feet became audible, and an old man with a toothless grin peeked out of one of the rooms, stare at the two intruders and asked, "what did you want?"
"We are looking for the publisher of this book," Zuma brought out the copy of LAYLA in his hand, walked toward their host, and then stopped when the man screamed out.
"Take that cursed book off my sight."
"Apology," Zuma answered back, put the novel in his trouser pocket and asked, "are you the publisher?"
"No. All of them died mysteriously after publishing the book, and this place is a shadow of itself after."
"Tell me everything you know about it."
"Nothing. Am just a security guard and my job is to open the gate and locked it at the right time."
"Is there anyone we can talk to?"
"Are you deaf? Everyone that worked on this book died mysteriously immediately after it was published. The publisher, editors, and all the crew in charge of publishing are now buried under the six feet."
"We came from a very far place. Please give us something worthy of the time and energy spent to reach here."
"My advice is for you to toss the book away and never have anything to do with it."
"Unfortunately, that's impossible. People have started dying from reading it. I need to know the writer, distributors, and the fastest way to remove them from the market."
"Nothing lies ahead of you but death. Anyone who dares interfere with LAYLA will die in a few hours. Please throw it away and warn you, people to run from it."
"Tell us what you know... Everything."
"We need your help."
The man wobble into sight, walked towards the two visitors, and let out, "please seat down."
"Thank you."
"A few months ago, a lady came with the manuscripts of this story, and our boss offered to publish it because he believed it is a catchy story. After all the necessary legal procedures, the lady left and work promptly began on it. The death started the day the book was launched, and all those who have hand in its production were dead in few days."
"Who is responsible for the distribution of your stories?"
"As I said earlier, I have no idea. Everything I had told you so far was hearsay."
"Did you remember any other thing?"
The old man raised his hand, scratched his head and look momentarily lost. "I heard the girl on the cover page was a real entity. She was found in the middle of an ocean and the novel contains her tale of the other world."
"Quite helpful."
"Thank you. This is my telephone number, please don't hesitate to call if you remember anything."
"Of course. And don't forget my advice. Throw this book away and run as fast as your leg can carry you. Don't be tempted to open the next page, otherwise, it will be the last book you will ever read."
"We will remember always."
Back in the car, the two officers were in deep thought, and their confused minds make them gawk at each other in total silence."I wish we have a chopper. We will be back home in few a minutes, instead of this long journey ahead of us."
"I will ask the governor for one when we meet tomorrow morning."
"Talking of the governor. What did you plan to tell him?"
"The truth, even though it sounds absurd."
"Your excellence, my investigation shows that this book is the source of the sudden suicide cases on the island... Hahaha. That's the most ridiculous speech I have ever thought of. "
"Any other option?"
"None. Except you want to admit that you are the one that brought bad luck to us."
"That sound more plausible than my previous explanation-. You won't believe that a fortune teller once prophecies about this occurrence. Even though her messages were uncleared to me, I can remember she mentioned that there will be lots of death where I am posted to."
"Did she tell you the way to prevent it?"
"Yes. That I should run and never turn the page."
"She was referring to the page of this book."
"Yes. And one more thing, she said death will appear in form of a baby."
"Her prophecy was damned accurate. The picture on the cover is of a little girl. Did you still remember the road to her place?"
"It was during a circuit festival and they were nomadic people. It will be difficult to trace her."
"The most important thing is to remove the book from circulation, and to warn the general public of its threat."
"Everything depends on the governor's response to my unbelievable hypothesis."
"I won't count on that joker. All he desired is someone to blame. He cared about his re-election more than our welfare."
Isabella is right, the governor was as furious as a mad bull when Zuma visited him the following morning. After listening with a smirking face, Zuma reddened when his listener burst into uncontrolled laughter, and then exclaimed, "you are kidding!""No. Evidence shows that all the suicide victims read this book."
The governor peered at the book in Zuma's hand, giggled for a while and then let out, "open it and read it for me."
"I can't. Whoever goes beyond the second page will commit suicide promptly later."
"You are the funniest man I had ever met in my life. Now I had to admit that your potential was exaggerated."
Zuma shrugged at the governor's insult, stood up from his seat and said, "I want you to disclose this information to the public and warned everyone about the danger attached to this book."
"Not until you prove to me that this book is responsible for their death, and not you."
"I beg your pardon!"
"People are talking. I heard everything fell apart immediately after you arrived here."
"Coincidence... Nothing but coincidence."
"No. I don't believe in coincidence but I believe in bad luck. And you know what? Unfortunate people upchuck me."
"Huh!"
"I order you to read that story for me now!"
"Apology. That is impossible."
"Then you are dismissed for refusing to obey my direct order."
"Goddam you! Read the novel if you like and keep your fucking tease to yourself."
Zuma was red with anger as he slammed his large fist on the governor's table, stood up in outrage and hurled the novel in his hand into his tormentor's face.
"You are fired... Can you hear me? YOU ARE RELIEVED OF YOUR POST RIGHT NOW!"
Only one thing raced through Zuma's mind as he drove to the headquarters to pick his few properties, "I wish that sucker will read the book and die."
Beware of your thought, you don't know when an angel will say amen to them. The first telephone call was from the state deputy governor, and Zuma's heart left his chest when he heard the sad news. "The governor is dead and you are the last visitor he welcomes into his office. Come right now, please." Although this is the twentieth distress call from the family of the bereaved, Zuma knew the call from the state secretariat is more important than the rest. After his oral dismissal from service, he drove to his house, picked up a few clothings and drove into the police headquarters to drop his letter of resignation. And he was in his office to park his few belongings when the telephone calls commenced. The first call was from a mother who lost her two twins to the hand cold of death. According to her, the two boys left their house some minutes earlier and were later found inside the lagoon some kilometres away. The second call was from a man, and he was at the point of hysterical wh
As soon as Zuma left the presence of the Cumberland state governor, the bearded man was seen smirking at his back, then picked up the novel fling at him and gaped at the picture of the black-eyed girl on the hardcover. He agreed the picture is spooky, and the gawking of the black cat on her shoulder seemed to be boring into his soul. Nevertheless, it's just a novel and there is no reason to be scared " Put the book somewhere and attend to today's chore!" A warning voice sounded in his mind, and the governor smirked for the second time in a few minutes, tossed the book on his hand to the far side of the long table, picked one among the heaps of files in his front and was immediately engrossed in it when a piercing sound of the telephone shattered the serene environment. His hand dashed towards it, picked up the receiver and muttered, "hello." The voice on the other side was weird and sounded like a giggling of a girl, and he shortly banged the receiver on the body of the telephone,
Exhausted and at the point of breaking down, the two police officers drove out of the government house and were immediately invisible among the numerous cars that usually pass this route at this time of the day. They were as silent as a mouse through the drive, and it was when the car parked in front of Isabella's bungalow that she finally had access to the use of her tied tongue."Won't you come inside for a cup of coffee? This weather is too chilly.""Thanks, but no thanks," Zuma answered back, releasing the car handbrake, looked at his comrade's face and let out, "I need to pick some files up in the office before heading home."He drove off before Isabella protested and was immediately lost in his thought after. Not even the showers of rain that fell after distracted the fully engrossed man. When Zuma arrived at Cumberland island as the chief of police, he had expected the interim chief to be an antagonist and brutish. But when a beautiful and carefree lady welcomed him and introdu
When brightness refused to appear at its due time, the inhabitants of Arkansas Island knew today is an auspicious day. Since the majority of the dwellers of the island were fishermen, the pregnant cloud seemed not to affect their plans for today. And not even the heavy rain that came down after a long moment of winds and whirlwinds made them change their minds.Shapes of men became visible when bright thunderstorms strike in the sky, and their voices came to be faintly audible after. "I suggest we go back home. This storm is a bad omen," the oldest among the pair announced, scratched his scanty fluffy white hair and groaned louder. "No...Why did you always look for signs and omens? We will proceed as planned, and let heaven rain pellets if it wants." "I am feeling a kind of premonition about this storm. Please let's go back home and come when this weather cleared." "Procrastination is a lazy man's apology. Don't forget, tick says the clock-." "Tick-tick. What you have to do, then
One of the most difficult careers on this island is the work of the police. And the fact that all of the male officers, except the chief of police, were placed on compulsory night duties every week, may be part of the setback that made few of the dwellers embrace the dangerous job. Even though this is a peaceful island with few records of burglars and petty thieves, the sleeplessness attached to the job is enough to scare a chicken-hearted man. And this and many more were the outcomes of why there were few police officers in the service of protecting over a million citizens of Cumberland. To keep boredom away, officer Acharya left home earlier, and picked up a novel at the local library. And then head to the headquarters for his night duty. "Hey... What did you have in your hand?" "A novel. I rented it from the library as I was coming to work." "How many times did I have to remind you to always come with a novel for me as well?" "Apology, I keep forgetting... I'm a fast reader a
The twilight appeared before Alan and Danny reached their island, and the pair hide the jewel, and then carried the black-eyed girl to the village clinic. "What is this?" A white-dressed female nurse gawked at the unconscious little girl, and her shabby dress. "Your question should be who is this, and not what is this." "We found her like this in the middle of the sea and brought her here. You can take care of her, can't you?" "Of course. But because she is a minor, we need to know her relatives in case any unforeseen occurrence occurs." "We don't know her family or relatives. As we said earlier, she was seen in the middle of the sea, and it is our charitable character that made us bring her back." "Please come with me. Perhaps the doctor in charge will give her special consideration." "After you, Miss." As soon as the nurse turned and stepped into the intensive care unit, the two fishermen looked into each other's eyes, gestured and promptly take to their heels. And were la
"Did you hear about a black-eyes girl that was found in the middle of a sea, ten years ago?""Heard about it, but dismissed it as housewife's tale. What did she have to do with this?""Everything. Am afraid the death is connected to her.""She came to the limelight and suddenly disappeared and was never heard of... At least, that was what they made us believe.""Sad enough, she is alive or to be precise, she was alive and fell into the hand of a writer who wrote about her and her forbidden knowledge.""And the title of the story is LAYLA. Am I right?""Yes, you are. I want to travel down to the island where she was found, then asked around if anyone remembered anything about her.""Can I come with you?""If you wish. I hope the journey will not be too stressful for you?""Am stronger than I look. Don't be deceived by my fragility.""I agree. I have informed all my boys to go into all the bookstores, and libraries. And removed all the copies of that cursed book from the reach of the
The news of the appearance of a black-eyed girl soon spread around the village and the rumours mongers are no one but the nurses who found the girl too creepy for their liking. "She insists her name is Layla and she is a demon sent by Lucifer to the earth as punishment for her betrayer to the dark lord," one of the white-dressed nurses whispered into the ear of her comrade, peeking at the deep-in-sleep girl on the patient's bed and resumed her gossiping, "she is an evil entity and must get rid off as soon as possible.""How are we going to get rid of her? Those who brought her had taken to their heels, and I was told she has no family.""Some young men in the village are planning to invade here and snuffed life out of her.""Oh my gosh. That is murder.""No. You can only murder humans and not demons. That is not murder but cleansing the world of every evil.""Won't there be any legal repercussions if she was assaulted?""They will come under the cover of darkness and not in broad day
