About an hour passed before Lilia returned. In her hands she held what looked like a combination of huge watermelon and an apple.
“Umm… what is that?”
Lilia looked at me, then at the watermelon apple fruit, then at me again.
“This? According to the catalog it’s a papaya.” She said with a straight face.
That doesn’t look anything close to a papaya if you ask me.
“… it seems… different from what I remember.” I commented, still trying to understand what part of that was the papaya.
“Really? The first time I saw a real one was when I came here.” She walked over to where I stood then handed me the papaya? fruit.
“It can’t be eaten like this so we have to cook it fir-” she suddenly came to a stop and glared at me “you reek.”
And just like that I was forced to shower again. My clothes were washed and dried on the spot as well.
We began preparing lunch immediately after. I gathered the wood for the fire, careful not to go too far of course, while Lilia prepared the watermelon-apple-papaya fruit thing.
She took out a knife from her bag and started pilling the fruit. That took some time considering the size of the thing. But the knife was so sharp it cut through it like butter. The huge watermelon apple turned into a bunch of small cubes which Lilia dropped into a pot.
She then brought out something else from her bag, a cylinder the size and appearance of a bottle, although as Lilia spilled its content into the pot I could tell with simple eye measuring that the amount of water it stored shouldn’t be anywhere near what came out. Another strange device was then used to start the fire.
I waited for a few seconds as Lilia silently observed the contents of the pot. A couple of minutes later I started to feel that something wasn't right.
“… That’s it?” I asked.
“Hm? Yes, what did you expect?” Lilia said with blank look.
I didn’t know how that could be considered cooking. Can’t we at least add some salt?

“This is… amazing!!!!”
Thirteen minutes later the papaya fruit melted in the water turning to a yellow thick soup. The smell was really nice, then when Lilia served me a bowl and I took the first spoonful I was bashed by strong potato and cheese like taste.
I gulped down the first one in a flash then went and asked for a refill, making Lilia blink in surprise.
“Is it that good?” She asked.
“Yes! Really good!”
“Hmm… indeed, it has a stronger taste than any papaya themed product I have ever tried.” Said the girl after trying a spoonful.
What kind of biology made an apple shaped watermelon called a papaya taste like potato? I mean, I can accept the potato part but how the hell does a fruit taste like cheese? That doesn’t matter right now, all I know is that I can’t get enough of it.
Seeing me eat with full disregard for manners was probably why Lilia kept observing me while leaving her portion as it is. Or it could be that she can’t handle my smell and lost her appetite. I just showered, you know?
Suddenly she let out a chuckle.
“It’s just plain soup you know.”
Whoa…
I put my spoon down and turn aside, coughing in fist.
“A-are you alright? Here, have some water.” She presented me the bottle from earlier with a worried look.
“N-no, I’m alright… thanks.”
That smile… that smile is dangerous!
As I drank the water I wondered if I could live for long if she keeps using that smile on me.
“You don’t have to rush, just take your time.” She said, going back to her seat.
I stole glances at her a few times as we ate. The longer I looked at her the more charmed I got by her looks. While I was absentmindedly staring at her she stood up and took the pot.
“Sorry, I know you like it but we have to leave enough for later, okay?”
“… Ok.” It was after this that I noticed my bowl was empty. Maybe she interpreted the way I looked at her as asking for another refill. So embarrassing.
In the end I got away with three servings while Lilia managed two. When we were done the pot was still half full. We’re going to have that for dinner tonight so I can at least say I’m safe from the calorie bars for now.
“haaaah… that was good.”
“I have to agree, it turned out better than I expected.” Lilia let out a satisfied sigh.
Now that we are done eating there was nothing to talk about. It is the return of the awkward silence. Lilia sat there looking at the sky. Even when doing nothing she could easily steal the heart of any man lucky enough to see her. A woman with her beauty could be the cause of wars in old times.
I averted my eyes when she noticed me staring but they ended up on a part of her I was trying my best not to look at.
“… Hey…”
“y-y-yes!” Startled by her sudden call I straitened my back.
“There is something I wanted to ask you for sometime now.” She said, her expression having changed from a few seconds ago.
Twirling some strands of her hair around her finger as a faint pink color painted her cheeks, she looked at me in a shy manner and seemed to hesitate a bit.
“Is… something wrong?” I gulped down audibly, my heart beating like crazy.
“Well, I already told you my name but…” she continued after a short pause, stopping to take a deep breath. “I still haven’t heard yours.”
“Eh!!? You don’t remember anything!!” Lilia’s reaction when I told her about my lost memory was… surprise to say the least. Her eyes went wide as she covered her open mouth with both her hands. “Well, there are things that I remember but…” scratching the back of my head I couldn’t help but look down. “Most of it isn’t of much help.” “You don’t remember your name?” She asked “No.” “And where you are from?” “Not a clue.” “Any people you were close to? Your family or a friend or…” “No one comes to mind.” “What do you remember then?” “hmm…” I looked up to the sky and thought about it for a moment. “I remember that it was a really bad day… and that I almost got killed… oh, and I can recognize my face too.”
“Ugh…I don’t know why I’m asking now but… what the hell happened here?”“Who knows.” Lilia said as she bravely walked across the room. “There are no signs of struggle. Maybe they starved to death?”“Yeah, that I know. But… why?”Eight days have passed since I woke up. We were back inside the ruins, in the room where we first met to be exact. It’s a good place to be in if you are a fan of skeletons. Lilia has been putting off the exploration for a while to watch over me but after much effort and a lot of pain I managed to convince her to go together. The room didn't change much. Of course it didn't. Broken pods were lined up on one side, most of them broken. Shattered glass littered the floor, together with a bunch of tubes and cables that led to who knows where. Thin roots forced their way in from the ceiling while dark green moss grew on the walls. The mos
Sector twenty one, planet Gorgola, the lab ruins.“Um… uh… are you alright?“Yeah, I don’t think so…”We had to cut the ruin exploration short after arriving to the next floor. That was the part where things got really ugly. Not that long ago I was looking at eight dead, fleshless sets of bones and all I thought was 'man those graphics look sick'.It wasn't the normal reaction a sane human being would have when confronted by real life skeletons, but as I thought about it I realized that I have seen and heard a lot of not so normal things in succession for the past few days. My perception of reality isn’t in the best of conditions. As we walked through the woods Lilia quickened her pace to catch up with me.“I understand how you feel, bu
Born from earth and to earth shall return.Three days had passed since we found that cursed room. Lilia and I spent that time digging graves for the three hundred nameless children and the eight adults.I didn’t feel morally obligated to bury each one of them separately yet I did it anyway. I was the lucky one to have survived, and I just hated the idea of treating toddlers as a failed experiment. Some of them might even be my own clones or offspring, that was one of the speculations I didn’t want to think about.A graveyard had formed in such a short time. I stood there looking at the stones I placed to mark each of them. I think I understad why cloning was considered an unethical thing to do.“Did I tell you about it?” As I spoke my voice felt a bit dry, but I wasn’t about to shed any tears. “The last thing I remember before meeting you was me getting
At the end of the hallway we found another intersection. The plates that seem to show directions had faded long ago and without much to base our decision on we picked the right again. We arrived at a large gate that was left half open, after walking beyond it we arrived at another room. This one had boxes, many of them stacked on top of each other, and on each of the four walls are…“… Are those… weapons?” I said as I observed what I could only call a morbidly designed sword. Is this the armory or something?Lilia went and opened one of the boxes.“There are more inside…”Double edged swords, spears, lances, katanas, great swords, knives, hammers, scythes, axes, shields. They all had a little scienc
Sector twenty one, the laboratory ruins, LiliaWhat happened in this laboratory can’t be described easily. When I first found this person, original human sample 007, I realized something that disregarded all laws and morals happened in that institution.Experiments on the genetics of any sentient species is strictly prohibited by the interplanetary law, so unless it’s to find a cure for an illness that might cause extinction every race that is part of the Union is strictly prohibited from tempering with genetics. The law was signed by the majority of the members thousands of years ago as a result of the will of each race to preserve the purity of its blood, stop mutations from happening and to stop the manufacturing of biological weaponry. As a result of that exact law a number of legislations of the same purpose appeared on ea
Sector twenty one, planet Gorgola, the laboratory ruins, Lilia. We finished investigating the burned room. Although I say investigate, all we did was stand there and look at the scorched walls and the ash on the ground. It looked like it has been a while since it happened. We couldn’t confirm whether whoever, or whatever caused the hole downstairs came up here, but after a while O.H.S 007 started explaining a hypothesis he came up with.“Looking back at what little we know, I’m eighty percent sure the guy missing from the original human samples is the one responsible for this.” He said “He burned all the scientists watching the experiment that’s being conducted on him then fled by creating that hole. Since there are no weapons capable of this level of destruction among those we found in the arsenal I have a feeling that the e
“What’s wrong?” I asked, taking a step back as well. “This thing is still functional!!” Seven shouted. A second later a huge metallic hand struck the place he was standing in. If he hadn’t been fast enough in dodging it he would have been laying flat in the crater that formed there. The mechanic doll was rather slow, probably because of the lack of maintenance, but the force which it struck the floor with shouldn’t be taken lightly. A direct hit could cause severe damage. For humans, at least. It’s dangerous, but nothing I can’t handle. “Hey! Would you like me to take care of it? Or do you want to fight it on your own?” This might be a good chance to see what he’s capable of. From what he said before, Seven
