“He ruined last night's vibe,” a feminine voice hissed.

“Honestly, I'm surprised you are surprised. Are we not speaking of the same person?” A deeper voice added.

“Has anyone thought maybe he was just tired? I don't mean to defend him, but it always happens.”

“Tired my ass. He's just a cheapskate,” the first voice countered. “Look at him, peacefully sleeping. You would think he's an Angel.” She continued spitefully.

“He does look like an Angel.”

She snarked. “Yeah, like an Angel of hell.”

The other two looked at themselves and then back at her. “Damn! What did he do to piss you off this much?”

“What didn't he do?”

“Wait, why are two of you even in his room?” a second voice asked.

The ceiling and paintings suddenly looked interesting, as their eyes trailed everywhere else but on each other's.

The third voice paused in the middle of turning his head to question his actions. He wasn't doing anything wrong. Besides, they were all in the room.

“Are you not part of us? Why are you in the r

What'd you want to talk about?” Cleo asked when everyone had left.“I need you to go somewhere far. It's just for a few weeks.”“Why?” She frowned. He didn't answer immediately. Instead, he picked up the ring on the bed and stroked it between his fingers. His powers, lying within the ring's powers, called out to him. “You know, I don't remember what it's like to have my powers,” he said, derailing the conversation.“You would if you'd just wear the damned thing.” She shrugged.“You're right about one thing, it is damned. Ironic right? The humans want this little ring. The gods want the powers within the powers of this little ring. Wanna bet on who'd get to it first?” He cocked a brow.“If I have any say, you; you know, it's the actual owner. With how you've been moving, though, I know not to expect anything. And before you remind me about the past, I know what happened when you went overboard. I think you're a better man than you were then,” she said, concluding her lengthy rant.“Oh

He drove at full speed on the highway, racing against time to get to Mr Carter's mansion as fast as possible. Everyone peered through their cars as he whooshed past them. Some honked, others pulled their heads out the windows of his vehicle to curse him out.If only they knew his mind was too consumed to bother about their insults. He had just taken a turn that would lead him to the mansion when his phone rang.“Every time that damn thing rings, I hear some bullshit!” This was the first thought in his head as he picked up the phone. He answered without checking the ID. “Hello?” With one hand on the steering, the other holding his phone to his ears.“Elijah, it's me, Rhonda. I need your help, Elijah. My mum—- my mum slumped. She's been on the ground for about thirty minutes now. Dr Hill is swamped with emergency cases, so he can't come. He sent a doctor who has tried everything in his power to revive her, but she's not responding. Imagine my surprise when we called Dr Hill, and he ins

Elijah wanted to call her back, but the speed she used to retreat stopped him from doing so. He just stood there, wondering what had just happened.Like in the previous days, his subconscious tried to communicate something to him, but something else kept blocking it from going through.Still standing, a flash of reflection caught his eyes, making him whip his head to the side. There, the entrance to the garden stood beckoning to him.He remembered his early days in this mansion. That was before Rhonda, and he got their apartment. He would wander towards the garden but was always stopped from entering it, courtesy of their grandfather. They said it belonged to his dead wife, who entrusted it in his care on her deathbed. When he realized he couldn't solely handle it anymore, he left it in the care of a woman who worked for him for a very long time. His legs waddled beneath him, compelling him to move forward. This was probably the only chance he would have in a while to get the herb he

“Please, no more stops,” Elijah muttered as he drove out of the ambush. It was late afternoon when he pulled into the Carter's mansion. He had barely gotten out of the car when John was beside him, ushering him out with a barrage of questions.“Calm down, John,” he said, finally finding enough space to leave the car.“We called you in the morning, Elijah. Why are you only just coming? I don't mean to be entitled, but I thought you cared about Winnie?”“More than you'll ever understand,” he said in his mind, but with his lips, said, “Where's Mr Carter?” “He's in there, pacing around. He hasn't been able to sleep a wink since we found out last night that she neither returned to her office, her house, or his house,” he explained somberly.Elijah's heart palpitated. It was doubtful Winnie would skip a day off her family, especially her grandfather. “Have you spoken to Lexington? Maybe he's seen her.” He felt weird for mentioning his name, but there was no denying the two had gotten close

“Father?” Her voice dropped an octave lower when she saw how distraught he was.She went over to him but paused when Elijah's presence became visible to her eyes. “Who are you, and what have you done to my father?” She asked, pointing an accusatory finger at him.“Me?” Elijah asked. She looked around and then back at him. “Aside from the weird man in the suit, and—” she stopped, her eyes widening. “Colin Trust? Is that you?” She moved away and went to stand before him Instead.“Alice, you're back,” he said, not matching her enthusiasm.“You look so grown. Everything in this City has changed, including you.” She gave him a slow once over and then stretched out her hand. He let out a small sigh and accepted her hands. “You look the same,” he said, and he didn't mean it as a compliment.“Well, thank you.” She blushed.William shook his head, wondering what he had done to be blessed with such a child. “Why are you here, Alice?” He asked, unable to take it anymore. She did one-eighty and

Winnie Carter's eyes flickered open in the dimly lit room. It took her vision a few seconds to adjust to the darkness and her brain even longer to recall all events before the three seconds her eyes had been open. When she eventually did remember, there was only one thing she wanted to do: escape! She tried to move both hands but stopped when they wouldn't budge. She was about to try raising her legs when she felt constrained.Despite the dullness of the room, her eyes shot down to see what was causing the restriction. Squinting hard, she found hints of a rope tied across her body. She was bound.“Oh crap!” She hissed. Her pissed-off voice echoed around the room before returning to her ears. The sound made her even more annoyed. There were a lot of things she needed to do, and being locked up this way was going to set her back a lot. Being the businesswoman she was, she decided to run a little negotiation.“Hello? Is anyone there?” She called out. Her voice, like a spring, bounced thr

Elijah parked his car and went straight into the center. He walked past the pixie-cut lady trying to call out to him and didn't stop until he got to Dr Hill's office. He knocked on the door, and even before the doctor could tell him to come in, he pushed it open and stepped in.“Elijah!” Dr Hill called in faux surprise. Pretending as if it was barely twenty minutes ago, he had called to tell him he would be coming. However, what stopped him dead in his tracks was the woman who turned to look at him.“Rhonda?” He found himself calling in a shock-filled voice.“Elijah, what are you doing here?” She asked, her brows slanting curiously.“I should be asking you that. Is everything okay? Is your mum fine?” “She is,” her face fell before she continued speaking. “You know how mum gets. When she found out you brought her back to life, she insisted I come to Dr Hill for extra medication, just in case you did something bad to her,” she explained. He knew he was supposed to be mad at her mother

“What kind of god are you? Aren't gods supposed to be kind?” “Who said so?” He cocked an arrogant brow.“It's a universal belief. How are you a mean God? You're either lying, or I'm dreaming?”“You still don't believe me?” “You've not given me a reason to.”“What else do you want me to do? I already read your mind.”PushShe rolled her eyes.”You could be one of those psychic people. I don't know.” She shrugged.“You're an unbeliever. For a girl as pretty as you are, that's not a smart choice,” he said, shaking his head.“The alternative is taking your word for it. If you want me to believe you're a god, prove it to me. Cause it to rain in here. Please send me a pet dog for companionship. Provide food from the ceiling. I'm not going to eat something that nasty, but it'll turn me into a believer,” she said, throwing him a daring smirk.“Is that a dare?” His lip curved into an amused smile, making him more handsome than he already was.She blinked and took her gaze elsewhere. “The burd

A crowd gathered at the streets of Quantum City to watch the elites light up the place. They were all grateful to have been invited to the fundraising of Colin Trust. As he turned his head around, he came face to face with Laura Anderson. She drew closer, and stopped in front of him. “The least you could do was answer my calls, you know? My mother was dying in the hospital, and I needed your help. I know about everything done to Elijah, so you can't even use that as an excuse. I just needed to talk to someone,” she said, tears in her eyes.Cleo was ready to go off when she turned and saw Laura Anderson. “You're the one that has a crush on my boyfriend,” she said before Tobias could respond.Laura painfully tore her gaze from Tobias, and turned to Cleo. “So you're

Isn't she supposed to be with you?” Tobias asked.“No. She texted that she would be spending the night here, and I told her I'd pick her up for the fundraiser this evening,” he replied.“Are you sure? Because I'm pretty certain she received a call from you shortly after you left, and zapotec out to receive it.”“Wait a second,” Lexington took a step forward. “You're trying to tell me you haven't heard from her since she stepped out to receive a call?”“She said you wanted to speak to her. “Leave me alone. Just go away,” Elijah muttered over and over again, as he scraped the walls of his cell with his fingers. It had gotten dark, and everytime it was dark, the voices got louder and more menacing.“Elijah?!” The most off-putting of all the voices sounded. He knew who he belonged to, but he couldn't quite place it. His mind was too disorganised.“Leave me alone,” he begged.“Why? You don't want to be reminded of your sins? I thought you were a self righteous prick!”“I didn't do it,” he shook his head continuously. “I didn't. An accident. She did it. She caused it.”Darius laughed. “But no one that matters knows. In the papers, you're a murderer. You need to see the paper stands, and the news on the city's projector screens. They're all carrying your face and your crime. Maybe you should have publicised your healing abilities. If you had, the, would have been more inclined to support you.” he laughed maniacally.“I'm innocent. Leave me!” Elijah closed his ears, and dropped to the ground in a ball.He rolled from one end of the room to the other, trying to wade off the voices in his head.Still, they didn't relent. The more he tried to keep them away, the more they laughed and mocked him.“Do you know how many people you killed?” Another baritone voice began in a singsong tone.“Not one,” one shrieked.“Not even two,” another thundered.“Not five either,” a third chirped.“So many!” The first voice screamed and broke into a feat of laughter.“No, I didn't mean to. It was a mistake. A setup. Please. Mercy!” He begged, and cried.“No, you did! You put on the ring when you knew how blood thirsty it was. You wanted this. Craved it, because deep down, you're truly a monster!”“No I'm not!” He screamed back.“Yes you are!”“No I'm not!”“Y

They were driving along the highway when Avery turned on the radio and began to sing along to the music being played.“You haven't changed that much,” he said, as she sang.Despite the volume turned all the way up, she could hear him clearly.“It's the curse of being a star, my darling.” She continued singing loudly, pulling a head shake out of his head.He didn't care what she chose to do. The only thing he was happy about was the fact he had managed to get the sixth herb. He assumed if he hadn't seen it yet, it was because of how life threatening they were bound to be.He didn't care though. Tell me, and I'll do it,” she asked desperately.“Just move, Avery. Move please,” he pleaded.“Okay,” she rose to her feet. “But I'm not moving far away. Just in case you need my help.”He sighed and rose to his feet. She was stubborn, but it was understandable. She just wanted to help.“You listen to me,” he spoke through his bringing the ring to his face. “You're not going to keep doing whatever the fuck you want to do. I'm going to get that herb, and there's absolutely nothing you can do about it!” With every word he spoke, his tone grew higher and higher, until the veins on his forehead formed a poll of creasing mass. With a determined stride, he pushed forward an

Elijah drove to a stop in front of the Trusts mansion.“There's a way we can play this off without alerting Colin's boys. But if you want to go the badass route, then we can just walk in.”“What way?” Elijah asked, his trouble sensing tingling.“With your tongue shoved down my throat. They'd think we're in heat and just want to make love. Without any questions asked, they would open the door and let us in.”“No!” He said, immediately she was done.“Okay, Mr God. Chill with the outburst. It was only a suggestion. It's either that, or we go in together. If we do, there's a chance one of them might recognize you and report back to Colin. Are you willing to risk that?”“I'm already here. I don't care if anyone recognizes me or not. All I want to do is get in there, take the herb, and get out.”“You say it like it's that easy,” she said, withdrawing her legs from the dashboard. “Doesn't it take a whole process? Or are you willing to risk the ring working against you?”“The ring feeds on vi

“We will have to return to the exhibition one after the other, though. Just follow my lead,” Winnie said.Elijah blinked multiple times as he tried to wrap his mind around Winnie’s enthusiasm. She had the biggest smile on her face, as if she had been waiting for this day all her life.“Are you ready?” she lifted her head, her gaze darting between Elijah and Avery.“I don’t know what exactly you’re trying to do. But I’m bored and down for anything, so let’s do it.” Avery shrugged. “That’s the spirit!” she pumped her fist, then turned to Elijah. “You?” she asked, eyeing him gently as she waited for his response.“Do I have a choice?”“No!” Both Avery and Winnie screamed in unison.“Fine.” He threw his hands into the air in surrender. They stood aside, as Winnie stomped her foot on the ground twice before storming towards the exhibition room.“It’s not just me, right? She’s really enjoying this.” Elijah observed out loud.“Yeah buddy. You got yourself a show girl. In other words, a dra

Elijah thought about it for all but twenty seconds before he shook his head, rejecting the idea. “No. I absolutely cannot use Winnie that way. If I have to wait until the day of the fundraiser, then so be it.”“Look, I get it. Winnie is special to you. She’s the one you love, or whatever. Regardless, this is your best shot. Colin knows that you’re a god.”“What!” he raised his brow, temporarily startled?“I had to tell him about us, because he pretty much figured out the basics. Anyway, that’s not even the case right now. If you don’t find a way to sneak into the house soon, he’s going to set you up so bad when the time comes, I’m afraid you may not be able to escape the ambush.”He let her words sit in his head for a few minutes. His biggest enemy at the moment was time. By all indications, Colin planned on using the next weekend for his fundraiser. This would make it exactly one week from today. In a way, he could admit Avery was right. He had to move fast if he wanted to thwart C
