Much to his relief, the living room was empty when they stepped inside.

“Wow, this is your place? It's so nice,” Jack said.

He scratched the back of his head, thinking of the best possible way to respond to a compliment like that

“Uhmm, thanks,” he settled for.

He showed them to the couch and excused himself. On entering the kitchen, his steps faltered when he found Tobias munching on a cake.

“Hey Elijah, are they—-”

“Shhhh!” He hushed him. Motioning with his hands and heady, he explained the cops were still in the living room.

“Oh–” he nodded.

“I'll fetch two bottles of water, have a glass,” he mouthed to him.

“Okay.” He shrugged.

His eyes behind him, he walked over to the fridge, and picked out the bottles of water. Returning to the counter, he fetched two glasses. He was about to leave, when he paused, changing his mind.

Backtracking towards Tobias, he stopped, placed the glass on the table, and tried to snatch the fork so he could scoop some cake into his mouth.

He couldn't resis

A flicker of surprises crossed his eyes as they drove past a massive gate and stopped in front of a building with a signpost at the top of it that read, “ALL THINGS THAT MOVE.”He had never been to this side of town before, and it amazed him to note there was so much more in Quantum City than most of its citizens knew about.“Here we go!” Jack said, his voice ridden with excitement. As they alighted from the car, an attendant approached them.“Howdy, officers!” The man, who was in close contest with the ground, waved.Elijah had to reach down to see the man entirely. “You're good, Ashton?” Jack stretched out his hand for a handshake.“We're tryna survive, brother.” He laughed as their hands clapped. While the pleasantries were going on, Elijah took the opportunity to move his head around. It smelled like a mixture of oil, gasoline, and cigarettes. It's probably not the best combination due to how combustible things could get.But if you sniffed a little, you could perceive the underl

She saw him look at her but pretended not to notice as she kept her gaze locked on Lexington.“It's you!” Jack repeated.“Do I know you?” She slowly turned to the man, who kept screaming but paused when she noticed he was wearing a police uniform.“I'm at your service, ma'am,” he saluted, rising to his feet. Drawing near to her, he sought her hands.Amused, she projected it forward. He grabbed it and placed a gentle kiss on it. “Elijah was right. You look even more stunning in person.”Her eyes blinked multiple times, then lifted curiously. Lexington's gaze sought Elijah's, his lip curling into an amused smile. He shifted uncomfortably in his seat. He had been put on the spot by that idiot who couldn't zip his mouth to save his life.“He said that?” Lexington, seeking more messiness, prodded.“He did. I thought he was lying for clout, but as it turns out, he was sincere,” Jack continued, unable to read the room. “I'm glad you think I'm pretty in person,” Winnie said.He turned his he

“Hey man, I didn't know things were that bad between you and Winnie.” Lexington didn't feel the need to proceed without comforting Elijah. They may be rivals or not even the best of friends, but the fact they like the same girl only meant they had exquisite taste. He wanted people with refined taste, which was why he couldn't bring himself to hate Elijah.“What'd you say?” He asked, totally lost.“I said I didn't know things were that horrible between you and Winnie.”“It's nothing.” He shrugged, finally recovering from the harsh burn of her silence.“Are you sure? She wouldn't even look at you. You know there was a time she'd only look at you in a room filled with people.”“Well, I guess I've been replaced. At least, it's by a man that can protect her.” He eyes him, but not maliciously.“Really? I'm flattered that you think that.”“I'm not prideful enough to not know when I've been defeated. As long as you care for her, I'm good,” he assured him.“You're one of a kind. Why do you act

He couldn't help but throw his head back and laugh. “You think I will take half a million dollars from you? I'm not a con artist!” He exclaimed, his face ridden with unbelieve.Elijah sighed. He knew the man was playing with him, but he was bored with the games. His eyes went to the heart-shaped clock hung on the wall directly in front of him, and he saw it was just ten minutes to midnight. If he didn't evacuate before tomorrow, he was as good as in trouble.“Could we just stop playing around and agree?” He didn't notice his desperation had slipped until Lexington stopped laughing and turned to him.“What are you trying to do?” He tried his luck again.Something told him he needed help. If he could open up to him, he would be more than happy to help.“If you're not going to give me a real price, I'll find my way out.” He pretended to rise, but Lexington quickly gestured for him to sit.“I don't know what it is, but I understand why you wouldn't want to speak to someone like me. It was 1:am a.m. when he pulled into the warehouse. He parked the truck and jumped down from it.He paced around for a bit, contemplating whether to start parking or wait for Tobias to arrive. But when he calculated the time it'd take for him to come, he decided to go ahead. He strode to the back of the warehouse and punched in the code. The doors slid open, and he went straight to the escalator. It took him down and stopped in front of the doors. He inputted the second code, and the doors to the lab opened. The nurse was waiting for him when he stepped in.“You're finally here. I thought you weren't coming anymore,” she said when she heard his footsteps.“I had to find a truck. Coupled with some delays. Where's mum? How's she?”“She's fine. Do we start to park now? Where's Tobias?'' She looked past him, hoping to see the happy-go-lucky chap.“Hey, on his way. I drove the truck here from the store I got it from. He's driving from the house.”“Yikes. That's an extremely long journey.”

“Hey, nurse, let me help you up the truck. Are you sure you'll be okay alone?” He asked.“Don't be silly, Tobi. I'll be fine. And I can get on a truck by myself. We were taught certain things when I was still serving as a military nurse.”“Alright!” He raised his hand in surrender.“Go in and go help Elijah. It's already 2 am.”He nodded and turned around. As he was going in, Elijah was coming out with two boxes in his hands.“Hey,” he whispered. “For a god of war, you sure are lazy. You should be carrying about five boxes.”“How about I punch you in the face instead?”“Wow, you've gotten so violent.” He shook his head and continued into the warehouse.Elijah smiled as he walked to the truck. Only when he raised his head and saw the nurse already in the car did he realize the fault in their plan.He couldn't throw the boxes at her. They'd rip apart. “Hey, what's the delay?”He was about to explain when he saw a button at the side of the truck with an image. Pushing his luck, he press

With the help of Tobias, Elijah hoisted his mother onto the stretcher.“Does it fit?” He asked from the other side.“Perfectly!”“Let's roll then.”He pushed the stretcher out of the room, and Tobias put off the light.Inside the lab, he stopped for a few seconds and looked around.“Three years of greatness. Can't believe we're leaving.”“But we will be back, right? This is just a temporary setback. We won't let them shut us down forever, right?” Tobias desperately questioned. He couldn't bear the thought of never practicing again. Medicine was his life, his passion—why he never missed a day of work at the Crawford laboratory. It wasn't just because Dr Banes had been his role model. But also because he wanted to learn. As quick as possible, and boy, did he know.“Of course. When I destroy the elites of this City, they'll finally know where the herbs that have kept them healthy for the past three years came from,” he said, with a desert mind glint in his eyes and a fierceness in his vo

After an hour of driving, Elijah stumbled on a roadblock, which led to heavy traffic. The day was getting brighter, and many cars were already out and about. The City had never been this busy before. There was a shift in the air, and everyone went toward the wind.As his truck stopped behind Tobias, he pushed his head outside the window and stretched his neck to see if he could find the source of the traffic. Unfortunately, his eyes couldn't see beyond the cars before him.As he strained, his phone rang. Without pulling his head back, he reached behind and searched the dashboard for the device. He didn't see it and moved to the compartments of the car. There, he found it. “Hello?” He answered and tucked the phone in his ears.“Hey bro, do you have any idea what's happening?” His eyes went to Tobias directly before him, and he rolled his eyes.“Do I have superpowers? We're both stuck.”“Uhmm, yeah. Yeah, you do have superpowers.”He hung up the phone and withdrew his head.“What the f

As he turned his head around, he came face to face with Laura Anderson. She drew closer, and stopped in front of him. “The least you could do was answer my calls, you know? My mother was dying in the hospital, and I needed your help. I know about everything done to Elijah, so you can't even use that as an excuse. I just needed to talk to someone,” she said, tears in her eyes.Cleo was ready to go off when she turned and saw Laura Anderson. “You're the one that has a crush on my boyfriend,” she said before Tobias could respond.Laura painfully tore her gaze from Tobias, and turned to Cleo. “So you're

Isn't she supposed to be with you?” Tobias asked.“No. She texted that she would be spending the night here, and I told her I'd pick her up for the fundraiser this evening,” he replied.“Are you sure? Because I'm pretty certain she received a call from you shortly after you left, and zapotec out to receive it.”“Wait a second,” Lexington took a step forward. “You're trying to tell me you haven't heard from her since she stepped out to receive a call?”“She said you wanted to speak to her. “Leave me alone. Just go away,” Elijah muttered over and over again, as he scraped the walls of his cell with his fingers. It had gotten dark, and everytime it was dark, the voices got louder and more menacing.“Elijah?!” The most off-putting of all the voices sounded. He knew who he belonged to, but he couldn't quite place it. His mind was too disorganised.“Leave me alone,” he begged.“Why? You don't want to be reminded of your sins? I thought you were a self righteous prick!”“I didn't do it,” he shook his head continuously. “I didn't. An accident. She did it. She caused it.”Darius laughed. “But no one that matters knows. In the papers, you're a murderer. You need to see the paper stands, and the news on the city's projector screens. They're all carrying your face and your crime. Maybe you should have publicised your healing abilities. If you had, the, would have been more inclined to support you.” he laughed maniacally.“I'm innocent. The more he tried to keep them away, the more they laughed and mocked him.“Do you know how many people you killed?” Another baritone voice began in a singsong tone.“Not one,” one shrieked.“Not even two,” another thundered.“Not five either,” a third chirped.“So many!” The first voice screamed and broke into a feat of laughter.“No, I didn't mean to. It was a mistake. A setup. Please. Mercy!” He begged, and cried.“No, you did! You put on the ring when you knew how blood thirsty it was. You wanted this. Craved it, because deep down, you're truly a monster!”“No I'm not!” He screamed back.“Yes you are!”“No I'm not!”“Y

Just in case you need my help.”He sighed and rose to his feet. She was stubborn, but it was understandable. She just wanted to help.“You listen to me,” he spoke through his bringing the ring to his face. “You're not going to keep doing whatever the fuck you want to do. I'm going to get that herb, and there's absolutely nothing you can do about it!” With every word he spoke, his tone grew higher and higher, until the veins on his forehead formed a poll of creasing mass. With a determined stride, he pushed forward an

Elijah drove to a stop in front of the Trusts mansion.“There's a way we can play this off without alerting Colin's boys. But if you want to go the badass route, then we can just walk in.”“What way?” Elijah asked, his trouble sensing tingling.“With your tongue shoved down my throat. They'd think we're in heat and just want to make love. Without any questions asked, they would open the door and let us in.”“No!” He said, immediately she was done.“Okay, Mr God. Chill with the outburst. It was only a suggestion. It's either that, or we go in together. If we do, there's a chance one of them might recognize you and report back to Colin. Are you willing to risk that?”“I'm already here. I don't care if anyone recognizes me or not. All I want to do is get in there, take the herb, and get out.”“You say it like it's that easy,” she said, withdrawing her legs from the dashboard. “Doesn't it take a whole process? Or are you willing to risk the ring working against you?”“The ring feeds on vi

But I’m bored and down for anything, so let’s do it.” Avery shrugged. “That’s the spirit!” she pumped her fist, then turned to Elijah. “You?” she asked, eyeing him gently as she waited for his response.“Do I have a choice?”“No!” Both Avery and Winnie screamed in unison.“Fine.” He threw his hands into the air in surrender. Elijah thought about it for all but twenty seconds before he shook his head, rejecting the idea. “No. I absolutely cannot use Winnie that way. If I have to wait until the day of the fundraiser, then so be it.”“Look, I get it. Winnie is special to you. She’s the one you love, or whatever. Regardless, this is your best shot. Colin knows that you’re a god.”“What!” he raised his brow, temporarily startled?“I had to tell him about us, because he pretty much figured out the basics. Anyway, that’s not even the case right now. If you don’t find a way to sneak into the house soon, he’s going to set you up so bad when the time comes, I’m afraid you may not be able to escape the ambush.”He let her words sit in his head for a few minutes. His biggest enemy at the moment was time. By all indications, Colin planned on using the next weekend for his fundraiser. This would make it exactly one week from today. In a way, he could admit Avery was right. He had to move fast if he wanted to thwart C
