"How is it?" A crispy voice said.

"Master." Another deep voice spoke, it was a tall bulky man who was standing below a fleet of stairs with his head lowered but his scarred side profile was impossible to miss. His black boots fitted perfectly with the dark marbled floor and so did the dark walls of the room. "Most of the cities are now within the context of phase one and although we are almost done, the preceding team needs to be properly equipped in the face of stronger opponents." He briefly explained.

"Oh really?" The voice answered lucidly. "Then why is the team not aware of the consequences of not completing their work?" The voice sounded amused.

"I—I really can't say, Master." The tall man admitted.

"Jadyen, if you don't know, then why are you supervising the team?" This time, the voice bellowed. "Now that I think about it—your incompetence has made me realize that you are of no use to me anymore. I would send you in for proper discipline." Jayden, the tall man, gasped, both his blue and hazel eyes widened in terror. Being sent in for discipline was far from its literal meaning, it has been the worst nightmare for many of his predecessors as it cast fear into their souls. He abruptly fell on his knees with the hard floor grazing them as he cried, unaffected by the abnormal chill of the cold ground.

"Master, please grant me a second chance! I will do all that you command!"

"Why should I give you a second chance when you haven't played your role right?" The voice questioned, as the sound of footsteps descended from the stairs. Soon, a pair of silver boots appeared before Jayden's sight but he dared not raise his head.

"Not only have you failed to guide the team but you've also failed to bring back a report concerning project 01. Do you still think you are deserving of another chance?" The boots took a turn around Jadyen as the voice continued to say, "I might forgive you—if there is news about project 01, but I doubt that there is any."

Jayden shivered, his outstretched hands were withdrawn in trembles. He did have news but he was afraid that it wouldn't be enough since he had no evidence to back the report and also, if he doesn't tell, his petty life might be endangered. He had to summon a bolt of courage before he said, "I—I have some information—" He carefully raised his neck only to catch sight of the boots frozen beside him and the fear in his heart intensified.

He couldn't continue speaking and the voice must have been furious.

"And—"

"Although the information is incomplete, I think it's 62% accurate." He clearly struggled to spit out those words.

"You think?"

"I know, I know!"

"So?"

"I have found the estimated location of project 01 but the tracking device seems to be disabled. It was ineffective even after Mr. Cori tried." Jadyen said, fidgeting as he fumbled with his hands. He wrapped an arm around himself as he felt that he was getting too cold.

"Mr. Cori helped?" The voice sounded confused, "I thought he said he wouldn't meddle with any of our current situations but he helped in tracking down project 01? Isn't that strange?" The voice continued to talk to himself.

"I think Mr. Cori helped because he was the biggest contributor to the creation of that project." Jadyen answered and he instantly felt a gaze flashed his way.

"What is the location?"

"One of the communities in Vel city. "

"Oh, I see." The voice suddenly became stern, "I forgive you but you must find the true location in the next four days, otherwise you can just end up as a test subject."

"Thank you, Master. I will do as you say."

"Which hall is for the event?" Elias asked, walking behind the duos in front. He noticed that they kept going up the stairs even when they've passed many halls already.

"Hall 13." Ana answered, she ran her fingers across the stairs' frame. One nature of hers, her obsession with buildings.

"The wood is very smooth but not well polished, it must have worn out over the years." She complimented, finally pulling her hand away. She clapped her hands, dusting the nonexistent dirt from it. She was surprised that Elias hadn't teased her already so she turned only to see them staring at her bewildered. "What?"

"Are you really in a hurry to get to the hall?" Elias asked. He arched a brow as he stared at her with his shiny dark eyes. Ana noticed that his black hair had grown out, she didn't seem to have seen it during their time at the beach.

"Of course." She looked away and Lucas' anxious face came into her view. Glancing at the golden watch on her right wrist, she realized that they were running out of time. "Let's go." Ana said as she eyed Elias before turning towards their destination. Hall 13 was along their path but two halls in front, they had taken three stairs to get there.

Soon, they arrived at the hall and they stood in a straight file before the massive door. Each hall was alike with similar door designs. As she stared at the wooden door with a heavy metal handle, Ana felt a pang of pain and she placed her right hand on her chest, above her heart. She couldn't figure out why she felt that way but she had a bad feeling that something was about to go wrong.

But what?

"Oh my goodness!!" Both Lucas and Elias exclaimed. The sudden noise which brought Ana back to her senses, made her realize that they had opened the door and they were both staring ahead into the hall room. The look of horror written all over their face frightened Ana so bad that her whole body began to tremble. The pain in her chest intensified and tears fell from her eyes. Why? She now knows why.

"What happened here?" Ana looked into the far end of the hall, there stood a well decorated stage before many seats. The deco of the hall remained a huge contrast to the seated guests.

The same gaze of horror and fear was displayed perfectly in their eyes.

For a moment, Ana thought she saw them struggling while climbing over each other to get to the door. Those behind even had a glint of despair brewing within their dark orbs. She was still hallucinating when Elias pushed past her to check the people, Lucas followed too. Elais crouched down beside an aged looking man, he placed a finger underneath the man's nostril and a minute later, he deduced.

"They're dead."

"What?!" Standing above him, Lucas exclaimed. "How is that possible?"

"I have no idea," Elias turned again back into the hall, "just to be sure, let's check the others." He'd had a premonition that something was about to go wrong but he never expected this to happen instead, he could only hope silently that Hadley would be okay.

"Elias," Ana called, her voice shaky and Elais saw the fear in her eyes. "Would they be fine? They are all not dead, right?" Dad will be fine, right? That was what she wanted to say but her mouth felt heavy to even spit it out. Her eyes were so clouded that she didn't even know when a tear rolled down her cheek.

"I guess so." Elias was solemn. His expression was dull and frightened witless.

"Why don't we check first?" Lucas hurried, his hands had formed a warp around himself. He was chilled to the bone but as a man, he had to stay strong otherwise, he might have broken down to tears already. He had a bad feeling that his parents wouldn't be spared from this either but like Ana, he still wanted to hold onto the last straw of hope that— they may still be alive.

"Okay," Ana nodded frantically, her head looked like it had lost a few screws and it just slided back and forth. Lucas also nodded but his head was more stiff than usual. With trembling hands, Elias led them forward.

The hall was so wide and huge that the ceiling was many feet above the floor and the end seemed endless. It took a very long while for them to check each person even after splitting sides.

The more they came closer to the center of the hall, the more frightened they got.

"They really died. All of them." Lucas sucked in deep breaths. In as much as he didn't want to believe, the facts were all laid down in his presence and he could not change a thing about it.

"Yes." Elias said, his hands hung weakly by his side and the edge of his eyes was rimmed with tears that he wouldn't let fall. He too had eventually succumbed to his fear especially after they had seen the lifeless face of Mrs Liam.

He, who was the forefront of the team, had fallen much less the others.

"If this happened to even Mrs Liam, how would our own relatives survive it?" Lucas had broken down completely and had wept his eyes out. She wasn't even his mother but his heart ached terribly when he thought of his own.

Ana had walked far away from them and she was bending beside the stage. Although she had witnessed Mrs Liam state, she still chose to believe that her father would be alive and okay. And unlike them, her mind was crowded with only one thing. To find her dad.

She took a turn around the stage and her body froze in place. The only part of her body moving was her trembling right hand as she called.

"Guys, you need to see this."

"What do you think is there?" Lucas sniffled, hiding behind Elias. "Just look!" Ana jumped, pointing towards the spot. A finger fell out from under a body whose back was visible to them. It was as pale as paper. Then another finger fell out again, right beside the first. Slowly and gradually, fingers the number of a hand popped out completely. They had a ghost-like complexion and looked shrunken in place. Ana recalled watching a movie with a similar incident and she felt like she'd transmigrated into that scene. Four friends played a dare game, challenging ghosts and suddenly, the house became dark with the lights flicking back and forth. A pale palm had appeared out of nowhere and then, a red-died bodied landed in the room from the ceiling but when they looked, the ceiling wasn't broken. It was a ghost. Frightened, she turned her head around and beside her were four, no two friends. Shaking the thoughts out of her head, she denied the possibility of a ghost appearing believing the

  • Long Run   Chapter 7: What Now?

The chill of the evening breeze grazed their skins but unfortunately no one winced or perhaps no one felt it. They had been too carried away, staring in the void of their town. Vel City, which was originally loud and bustling, is now so quiet like a graveyard. Coincidentally, it actually became one as more than fifty thousand people all died before the end of the day, leaving behind seven scrawny little teenagers in their stead to clean up the mess. "You promised!" A feeble person knelt beside a huge pile of sand as she punched heavily into it. The tears in her eyes kept falling like rain. "You said we'd go on a vacation together! Not like this!" Ana cried, she refused to believe that he had died and wouldn't be returning. No one comforted her, the rest of them also lost someone or more. They were also immersed in their net of sadness, especially Nova. "Mum, did you already guess this will happen? So you didn't let me come with you?" Unlike Ana, she was smiling but on a second look

By the break of dawn, outside Ruby's house, Ana was dressed and was carrying a backpack with Spiky hopping around her. When she walked past Nova's house, she noticed the lights were off, indicating that Nova had left. She sighed and headed towards the city gate. They had all agreed to meet there before 6 am and just as they said, they'd already arrived when she got there. She subconsciously looked around and nodded, everyone was prepared. "Let's go." She said and Lucas pushed the huge gates open. The cool breeze that blew in made her eyes sting. On the top of the huge gate, was written; Goodbye Vel City. She couldn't put into words how she felt at the moment because the words resonated well with her. She has stayed here since she was little and now she is leaving with no hope of returning. For the last time, she looked back and she could see a vague image of the little her then, running around the lakeside while being pursued by her father. The memories came flashing before her ey

It was March 17, 2043, and it has only been two weeks since they left Vel, one week since Elias' car broke down and they'd had to walk, and three days since they'd rested because not an hour passed by without them being attacked by who knows what.Their original dream of exploring the outside world has become a nightmare that they can't wake up from as the world outside was far worse than they imagined. In the beginning, it was like an apocalypse had occurred because the towns they went through were deserted but as they ventured deeper, it wasn't deserted and the humans had been replaced by scary creatures."We're doomed!" Lucas exclaimed. He dashed into the empty room and plopped down on the floor, looking like a dried fish. It didn't look like he would be getting up anytime soon.Crashing beside him, Nova complained. "Exactly. If we had known that things would go terribly, we'd have just stayed in Vel." She added, "I'm so exhausted.""Same here," Ben said, dropping his bags."What ar

  • Long Run   Chapter 10: Escape

“Ana, take them away from here!” Elias yelled, his usually calm face was covered with worry, one Ana had never seen on him before. He held a sharp iron bar in one hand as he struck the incoming monsters. Beside him were Ben and Carson, they each surrounded a cracked opening in the wall with Ana and the others inside. Natalie was tending to the injury on Lucas' left lower arm. A wide cut ran through his elbow down to the base of his wrist. He was losing so much blood that Natalie was frightened as she trembled while using clothes on clothes to wrap his hand.Ana shook her head as she disagreed. “I'm not leaving here without you guys!” Everyone was trying hard to fend off the monsters' attack but Elias managed to secure Lucas, Ana, Natalie and the exhausted Nova, an escape route through the artificially made door created by Lucas. He'd been slammed into that wall by one of the monsters and both Carson and Ben had blocked him to buy him some time to recover. It was that same route which A

"Take this one, fill it up," Natalie said, passing a transparent bottle to Carson while crouching down by Carson's left side. The joy of finding water soon departed from their hearts and was replaced with the despair of losing their friends. "Um. What do you think might have happened to them?" Carson said. His eyes looked worried as he stared at Ana. Aside from Elias, she was the only one who fitted the leadership role among them. Moreover, she was the one leading them to Sephora so somehow, they all ended up listening to her. Well, except Natalie."Dead, I say. Why bother asking? It's been over three hours and none of them has come out already. Besides, didn't you see Ben losing his arm? I don't think he will survive it and with Elias knowing nothing about first aid, he lost all hope of surviving." Natalie said, bitterly. That bit of sorrow in her voice left Ana wondering who exactly made her sad. It couldn't be Ben.She saw that Carson looked even sadder than Natalie was, she underst

  • Long Run   Chapter 12: Bringing Back A Stranger

"No way! How can you bring a total stranger here?" Natalie was the first to oppose Ana's request. Just as she stared angrily at Ana, she spaced no effort in heightening that glare when she faced the person laying on the ground. The dirt on the person's face made it difficult to see what the person looked like, not like she cared anyway. Ugly, handsome, beautiful, she cared less. Her major concern was her safety.Who knows if it is a monster pretending to be dead or 'fainted' as Ana said? I have to get to the bottom of this. She repeated what Elias had always said before, it was better safe permanently than just temporarily.Ana was helpless as she passed Elias a pleading look. "Help me out here." She muttered and it was then Elias stood up. He briskly walked over to where the person was and raised a brow. "A boy?""Yeah," she shrugged. "He's still alive. Don't know how he managed to escape the monsters but he made it this far, meaning he is desperate to live.""Who won't be desperate

  • Long Run   Chapter 13: A Burden? Maybe.

Natalie kept her arms crossed over her chest. Her waves of red locks were flickering under the intense gaze of the moon. Although her face wasn't as good as Ana's exquisite face, it was still pretty but her sharp stares made her look like a monster from a terrifying movie. Her gaze kept settling on Ana now and then. She and Nova were sitting close to each other, and by the side of that boy, Ana brought back. What a farce. She sneered and then turned to Elias. "We don't have anything for dinner, do we?"Elias nodded. It was true that they ventured down for supplies but because of the monsters, not only did they not get any supplies, but they also lost their bags which contained some dried food. Now, there was nothing for them to eat."What do we do now?" Nova said, folding up her legs such that her knees were pointing upwards. She looked at Ana, ignoring Natalie's piercing gaze. The place became silent and the only sound came from the birds landing on the surrounding trees. Ana just kn

He added, "They will be fine."“How sure are you?" She snapped, her last bit of restraint broken. "What do you think will happen to Ana when she's with a stranger?" Looking at her, Elias felt that her round adorable pair of eyes wasn't adorable anymore, it was scary and alarming to look at that he dropped his head slightly."Are you worried about their safety? Or are you worried about Ana being with Christopher?"Nova turned around, away from Elias as she faced Natalie with a questioning gaze. "What did you just say?!"Natalie boldly walked over, “I said, are you worried about their safety or you’re just worried about Ana?” Natalie said, placing her fingers before her face as she blocked away Nova’s glaring look. She was so focused on her fingers that she didn’t notice Nova’s lips twitching in rage.Inhaling and exhaling, Nova finally spo

Everyone into the tunnel."They dashed out of the mart, and from their right side, Ana could see a faint shadow of a tiny ball. She didn't even bother to look twice, she immediately went to the tunnel, took off the cover and pushed them inside. She was the last to enter but before she closed the tunnel, she gave that vague shadow a last peek before closing the lid.Inside, Elias asked. "What was that?" Ana had been the only one who saw what it was so she was the right person to ask."Shh!" She signalled as she raised a finger to her lips. Everyone hurriedly clamoured up. Ana tore her gaze away from the monsters outside as her grip on her bag handle tightened. She glanced at Nova, and the latter nodded, patting Natalie on the shoulder as they took large steps towards the door.If only Ana had spare time, she would have checked out the quality of wood the door was made of, for the surface was rough and dusty. They weren't going to stay here long so there was no need to bother about a dusty old door.Elias and Ana made a team, and Nova and Natalie made another with Lucas as their guard. As Elias gripped the door handle, Carson didn't forget to say. "Be careful.""We will," Ana answered, giving him a long look before she glimpsed at Christopher. She beckoned Spiky over, ignoring the worried look plastered on Christopher's look."You…" Before he could make a full sentence, Elias had gently flung the door open and Ana just picked Spiky up as she made her way out of the room.Elias immediately followed by her side, surveying the area while Nova and Natalie e

He also said that just because he hadn't reported Carson's mistake of bullying Nova, didn't mean he was stupid. He could have left me unpunished because I wasn't totally wrong. Carson should have been the one grounded but he wasn't."Elias gripped her shoulders. "He was being democratic. He always has been but he did it because he listened to his heart and not his head." He pointed towards her chest. "Listen to your heart.""You want to guess what my heart says?" She arched a brow, glancing briefly at her shoulders."Oh, sorry." Chapter 19: Heart And Not Head.

Ana sighed. Lucas was now calm and the room had resumed its silence. Everyone has forgotten about stopping her from going after Ben's corpse and she'd also forgotten about it.What was more important now, was her getting to know Christopher to find out more about how he managed to survive. She just had this feeling that she'd be able to find something useful out of him. Maybe a way to leave this place and get to Sephora, or a way for them to stand a chance against the monsters. Either one would be deeply appreciated. She didn't need a priest to tell her that Lucas wanted out of the place they were and a safe haven at Sephora or that they needed to find a way to fight those monsters. Or that they will end up with nothing if they remain idle. It's time to put in more effort. She thought and went over to Elias' side, bent to whisper something in his ears. Initially, his eyes widened in surprise but after calmly listening to Ana, he nodded in affirmation to whatever they had discussed.Of

Is there anything wrong with that?""Be nice," Ana said."Of course. I'm only worried about his health." With that, Lucas took several steps backwards and sat alone, further away from them.Elias sighed. "Let's focus on the most pressing issue now. Your arguments and tantrums won't be of help in any way so I rather you all move aside and let me handle this."Of course, they stepped aside. Elias was like their second leader aside from Ana and Natalie would prefer listening to him than Ana so she strolled towards the door and sat next to it."Sure, no problem," Lucas said, moving back to his original position. All this while, Carson didn't interfere with their conversation nor did he join them in their arguments. Everyone was quiet. He said and walked towards the boy whose pair of forest green eyes never left his. The fear and strangeness with which he started at Elias made the latter feel guilty. It was understandable. Waking up to facing people who doubt and question the reason you decided to open your eyes to behold the world when they'd already accepted the fact that you may not wake up for a least a month or two.Elias thought maybe a year.
