The chill of the evening breeze grazed their skins but unfortunately no one winced or perhaps no one felt it. They had been too carried away, staring in the void of their town.

Vel City, which was originally loud and bustling, is now so quiet like a graveyard. Coincidentally, it actually became one as more than fifty thousand people all died before the end of the day, leaving behind seven scrawny little teenagers in their stead to clean up the mess.

"You promised!" A feeble person knelt beside a huge pile of sand as she punched heavily into it. The tears in her eyes kept falling like rain.

"You said we'd go on a vacation together! Not like this!" Ana cried, she refused to believe that he had died and wouldn't be returning. No one comforted her, the rest of them also lost someone or more. They were also immersed in their net of sadness, especially Nova.

"Mum, did you already guess this will happen? So you didn't let me come with you?" Unlike Ana, she was smiling but on a second look, there was a glimmering line of tears on her face and at the corner of her eyes. She was forbidden to attend the event so she ended up safe but she didn't know if it was a good thing or not.

Her mother had died instead. She may be very nagging at most but she was a caring mother who had raised her single-handedly. Even when she got mocked or teased for not having a father, at least her mother was always there for her with her soothing words.

"At least, you're not an orphan." She'd say or most times, she'd hug her and say. "They are just jealous that I will always love you more than anything in the world." And sure enough her mother did love her so much.

Nova thought and buried her face into her palms, hot tears sipping through her fingers.

Usually, Elias would always be by her side, patting her back ever so softly but today, he wasn't. He'd lost so much too, perhaps even more.

His mother, father and his younger sister, Hadley. Their graves were piled up before him and he still refused to accept the fact. He was always stone-cold and aside from his family and Nova, no one could influence his emotions, not even his best friends, Ben and Ana. Although Nova sees him as a friend, he doesn't see her quite the same. He didn't have the time to hate himself for not being there for Nova when he too found his family lifeless. Of everything, what he couldn't understand was how Natalie escaped the accident—Yeah, they called it the accident since they could not point out what exactly happened—when she'd gone with Hadley.

Beside him were Ben and Carson. They never attended the event because they were too busy preparing for an inter-science competition between a few neighbouring cities.

Only Lucas seemed out of place. Since his brother was not found, everyone assumed he'd escape just like Natalie had said she'd escape the feat. "I went to the restroom and when I came out, they'd all become like this." She had said.

Standing at the back of the wailing squad, Spiky nudged at Lucas's feet. His paws waved in Ana's direction. Unwilling, Lucas slowly approached Ana. He stammered. "It will be alright—"

"Don't go around meddling in others' business when you don't know what it's like?" Ana said, turning her head swiftly with a sharp gaze."

"I just wanted to help."

"It's not helping. It's causing more pain than it already is," Ana added. "If that's how you help, I don't need it."

"Ana, he meant well." Natalie butted in. "You aren't going through this alone, you know. I lost my parents and best friend too. Nova lost someone. Elias, Carson and Ben too." She said, pointing frantically at the others as she spoke. Her blonde hair looked out of place on her head as they stood disheveled like lost sheep.

"You still your friends, and a puppy too. Although Lucas may not have suffered a heavy loss, they all love you but who's there to love me?" She sobbed. "I know for a fact how much you all despise me. And I actually deserved it." She whispered the last part in a hoarse voice. She felt choked and her sobs became heavier.

They all grew silent as their ears absorbed the loud noise of Natalie's cry. The tears they'd tried hard to suppress, surfaced again and they wailed while sharing the emotional bond they shared. Their loss. A tremendous one too.

Several hours later, the seven of them stood shoulder-to-shoulder on the hill as they took in the beautiful view of their city. They'd done the same some days ago but with so many of their friends.

"So what now?" Ben asked, he pulled his hood up to prevent the wind from blowing his hair into his face. Lucas and Elias both looked at Ana. They'd been there when her father insisted that they all leave for Sephora where her aunt lives but Ana hadn't said a word about it till now.

"I don't know," Nova started. "You can stay here and live like nothing ever happened but as far as I'm concerned, I don't think I can do that." She lowered her head, picked up a stone and threw it into the distance. "I want to leave here. Go somewhere far and never return—" because I don't want to be reminded of this place. That was all she wanted to say but she felt like the words were too heavy to spit out. She was afraid she may lose her mind in this enclosed place.

"I don't want to stay either." Natalie said, glancing briefly at Nova. "I'll leave too." Lucas said and Elias threw him a surprised look. Struggling, he added. "My brother isn't here and my parents are away. If I leave now, who knows, I might bump into them somewhere in Weston, right?" He faced Ana but she paid him no attention. She kept staring straight ahead. "Do whatever you like. I'm leaving. Even if I wanted to, will my dad's last wish let me?" Her face lit up and her lips cut out a faint smile. "What if I stay? Will he wake up and nag me like always?" Her smile changed abruptly into a solemn one and from the corner of her eyes, tiny droplets of tears rolled down.

"There is nothing here anyway, we can just leave and go to another city. Start a new life and try to be happy." Carson tucked his hands into his jeans back pocket as he sucked in deep breaths.

"Since no one is willing to stay, we can as well go to Sephora. I heard it's nice and beautiful there and there are barely any mountains but lovely lakes and fruitful fields. Why don't we give it a try?" Elias advised and Ana's face relaxed a bit.

"I'm heading there after this. It's the only place my dad wants me to be. Perhaps, Carson is right." She faced them, watching their expressions change. "We can start over and live happily."

Both Nova and Ben nodded, showing their approval of the decision. Although there wasn't much difference in Natalie's expression, she still showed her approval as well.

"Alright then. It's been decided, we leave for Sephora tomorrow." Lucas smiled, his teeth flashing with his eyes shining brightly that everyone wondered how he could still smile at such a time. Elias smiled, for some weird reason, he saw hope in Luca's eyes.

"When do we leave? And what are the needed materials?"

"What else? Just grab some clothes, toiletries and food."

"What if someone gets injured?" Nova asked.

Lucas shrugged. "Then bring first aid too."

"How do we get down the hill tomorrow? The path out of the city is closed. What do we do?" Carson said, frowning at the thought that they might have to spend another extra day to clear the way.

It was only then they realised that they had so much to worry about.

"Besides that, what of our transportation? The train station is pretty much useless and we don't have a vehicle." Natalie also added and their faces fell.

Ana faced Elias, "you have a car, right? We're only seven. We can fit in the car, right?"

"I'm not so sure. The back seat can only accommodate four people and the front two. So who's not going to sit?"

"Only six people can sit? That's going to be a big issue." Lucas shook his head in worry.

"How big is the trunk?" Ben spoke up and Elias arched a brow. "Why?"

Ben explained, "because if it's wide enough—"

"Someone can sit there!" Lucas interrupted.

"That's true." Nova nodded.

Elias then patted Ben's back. "Great idea, Ben."

With cheeks flushed slightly pink, Ben smiled. "I just did what I could to help."

Seeing how well they managed to settle everything, Ana bent down to pick the jumping Spiky. "I'll go home now, to get some rest." She said and left under their heavy gaze.

"Let's get some rest too." Elias said, as he patted Lucas' and Carson's shoulder before stroking away. "Hmm." Nova mumbled, walking away with loud yawns.

By the break of dawn, outside Ruby's house, Ana was dressed and was carrying a backpack with Spiky hopping around her. When she walked past Nova's house, she noticed the lights were off, indicating that Nova had left. She sighed and headed towards the city gate. They had all agreed to meet there before 6 am and just as they said, they'd already arrived when she got there. She subconsciously looked around and nodded, everyone was prepared. "Let's go." She said and Lucas pushed the huge gates open. The cool breeze that blew in made her eyes sting. On the top of the huge gate, was written; Goodbye Vel City. She couldn't put into words how she felt at the moment because the words resonated well with her. She has stayed here since she was little and now she is leaving with no hope of returning. For the last time, she looked back and she could see a vague image of the little her then, running around the lakeside while being pursued by her father. The memories came flashing before her ey

It was March 17, 2043, and it has only been two weeks since they left Vel, one week since Elias' car broke down and they'd had to walk, and three days since they'd rested because not an hour passed by without them being attacked by who knows what.Their original dream of exploring the outside world has become a nightmare that they can't wake up from as the world outside was far worse than they imagined. In the beginning, it was like an apocalypse had occurred because the towns they went through were deserted but as they ventured deeper, it wasn't deserted and the humans had been replaced by scary creatures."We're doomed!" Lucas exclaimed. He dashed into the empty room and plopped down on the floor, looking like a dried fish. It didn't look like he would be getting up anytime soon.Crashing beside him, Nova complained. "Exactly. If we had known that things would go terribly, we'd have just stayed in Vel." She added, "I'm so exhausted.""Same here," Ben said, dropping his bags."What ar

  • Long Run   Chapter 10: Escape

“Ana, take them away from here!” Elias yelled, his usually calm face was covered with worry, one Ana had never seen on him before. He held a sharp iron bar in one hand as he struck the incoming monsters. Beside him were Ben and Carson, they each surrounded a cracked opening in the wall with Ana and the others inside. Natalie was tending to the injury on Lucas' left lower arm. A wide cut ran through his elbow down to the base of his wrist. He was losing so much blood that Natalie was frightened as she trembled while using clothes on clothes to wrap his hand.Ana shook her head as she disagreed. “I'm not leaving here without you guys!” Everyone was trying hard to fend off the monsters' attack but Elias managed to secure Lucas, Ana, Natalie and the exhausted Nova, an escape route through the artificially made door created by Lucas. He'd been slammed into that wall by one of the monsters and both Carson and Ben had blocked him to buy him some time to recover. It was that same route which A

"Take this one, fill it up," Natalie said, passing a transparent bottle to Carson while crouching down by Carson's left side. The joy of finding water soon departed from their hearts and was replaced with the despair of losing their friends. "Um. What do you think might have happened to them?" Carson said. His eyes looked worried as he stared at Ana. Aside from Elias, she was the only one who fitted the leadership role among them. Moreover, she was the one leading them to Sephora so somehow, they all ended up listening to her. Well, except Natalie."Dead, I say. Why bother asking? It's been over three hours and none of them has come out already. Besides, didn't you see Ben losing his arm? I don't think he will survive it and with Elias knowing nothing about first aid, he lost all hope of surviving." Natalie said, bitterly. That bit of sorrow in her voice left Ana wondering who exactly made her sad. It couldn't be Ben.She saw that Carson looked even sadder than Natalie was, she underst

  • Long Run   Chapter 12: Bringing Back A Stranger

"No way! How can you bring a total stranger here?" Natalie was the first to oppose Ana's request. Just as she stared angrily at Ana, she spaced no effort in heightening that glare when she faced the person laying on the ground. The dirt on the person's face made it difficult to see what the person looked like, not like she cared anyway. Ugly, handsome, beautiful, she cared less. Her major concern was her safety.Who knows if it is a monster pretending to be dead or 'fainted' as Ana said? I have to get to the bottom of this. She repeated what Elias had always said before, it was better safe permanently than just temporarily.Ana was helpless as she passed Elias a pleading look. "Help me out here." She muttered and it was then Elias stood up. He briskly walked over to where the person was and raised a brow. "A boy?""Yeah," she shrugged. "He's still alive. Don't know how he managed to escape the monsters but he made it this far, meaning he is desperate to live.""Who won't be desperate

  • Long Run   Chapter 13: A Burden? Maybe.

Natalie kept her arms crossed over her chest. Her waves of red locks were flickering under the intense gaze of the moon. Although her face wasn't as good as Ana's exquisite face, it was still pretty but her sharp stares made her look like a monster from a terrifying movie. Her gaze kept settling on Ana now and then. She and Nova were sitting close to each other, and by the side of that boy, Ana brought back. What a farce. She sneered and then turned to Elias. "We don't have anything for dinner, do we?"Elias nodded. It was true that they ventured down for supplies but because of the monsters, not only did they not get any supplies, but they also lost their bags which contained some dried food. Now, there was nothing for them to eat."What do we do now?" Nova said, folding up her legs such that her knees were pointing upwards. She looked at Ana, ignoring Natalie's piercing gaze. The place became silent and the only sound came from the birds landing on the surrounding trees. Ana just kn

When the boy moved, Spiky walked up and dragged his tired self towards Ana.Feeling the pup at her feet, Ana bent and rubbed his back. She glanced back at the others and they were still standing in silence, except Nova.Nova looked between Natalie and Elias, she knew that tension was drawn among them but she didn't know why. "Why are you just standing? What is it?" She twisted her brows into a frown when she saw that no one answered her. Awkward and curious, Nova drifted to Elias's side and tugged at his wrist. "Why is Natalie not replying?" She couldn't understand how Natalie hadn't retorted since Elias spoke. Meanwhile, Elias had frozen in place from shock. He lowered his head, stared at her confused gaze and he slowly answered. "I don't know." He wasn't being truthful, that he knew and he also knew how Natalie felt about him. If she had been a good and kind person, he wouldn't have been harsh to her but even if she was kind, she was not Nova. He would never consider her good enough

  • Long Run   Chapter 15: It's Now Or Never.

Everyone except Natalie had gone through the opening and she was still hesitant.“Natalie, get in now! We wouldn’t wait for you if you don’t get in now!” Nova panicked, she didn’t know why she was so worried about Natalie. Maybe she was just afraid of losing more friends. She wasn’t the only one afraid, Carson and Lucas were also worried. The storm was closing in on them and Lucas was panicking, he needed to shut the opening before it destroyed the building they were in. Ana had said something like, “...the building collapsing on our heads before we even get attacked by the monsters?...” and he didn’t want that to be his fault again so he’s taking up the task.Meanwhile, Natalie was terrified. “What if those monsters are there? They may get at us as they did at Ben, then what do we do?”“You fool!” Lucas cussed at her, “Which would you prefer, get frozen to death in the cave with no one by your side or use this chance to get revenge for Ben by fighting together?” Although she knew wha

Back at the building, Nova wouldn’t stop pacing and Elias had gotten dizzy from watching her.“It’s enough already.” He said as he rose to his feet. He added, "They will be fine."“How sure are you?" She snapped, her last bit of restraint broken. "What do you think will happen to Ana when she's with a stranger?" Looking at her, Elias felt that her round adorable pair of eyes wasn't adorable anymore, it was scary and alarming to look at that he dropped his head slightly."Are you worried about their safety? Or are you worried about Ana being with Christopher?"Nova turned around, away from Elias as she faced Natalie with a questioning gaze. "What did you just say?!"Natalie boldly walked over, “I said, are you worried about their safety or you’re just worried about Ana?” Natalie said, placing her fingers before her face as she blocked away Nova’s glaring look. She was so focused on her fingers that she didn’t notice Nova’s lips twitching in rage.Inhaling and exhaling, Nova finally spo

"Enough. Let's get out of here." Elias said, glaring at Lucas. He stared at Lucas for a while before turning away and marching forward to the entrance. They had only gotten to the entrance when they heard faint sounds."What's that?" Natalie asked, frightened. Ana listened for a while and then said. "Quick. Everyone into the tunnel."They dashed out of the mart, and from their right side, Ana could see a faint shadow of a tiny ball. She didn't even bother to look twice, she immediately went to the tunnel, took off the cover and pushed them inside. She was the last to enter but before she closed the tunnel, she gave that vague shadow a last peek before closing the lid.Inside, Elias asked. "What was that?" Ana had been the only one who saw what it was so she was the right person to ask."Shh!" She signalled as she raised a finger to her lips. Everyone hurriedly clamoured up. Ana tore her gaze away from the monsters outside as her grip on her bag handle tightened. She glanced at Nova, and the latter nodded, patting Natalie on the shoulder as they took large steps towards the door.If only Ana had spare time, she would have checked out the quality of wood the door was made of, for the surface was rough and dusty. They weren't going to stay here long so there was no need to bother about a dusty old door.Elias and Ana made a team, and Nova and Natalie made another with Lucas as their guard. As Elias gripped the door handle, Carson didn't forget to say. "Be careful.""We will," Ana answered, giving him a long look before she glimpsed at Christopher. She beckoned Spiky over, ignoring the worried look plastered on Christopher's look."You…" Before he could make a full sentence, Elias had gently flung the door open and Ana just picked Spiky up as she made her way out of the room.Elias immediately followed by her side, surveying the area while Nova and Natalie e

He also said that just because he hadn't reported Carson's mistake of bullying Nova, didn't mean he was stupid. He could have left me unpunished because I wasn't totally wrong. Carson should have been the one grounded but he wasn't."Elias gripped her shoulders. "He was being democratic. He always has been but he did it because he listened to his heart and not his head." He pointed towards her chest. "Listen to your heart.""You want to guess what my heart says?" She arched a brow, glancing briefly at her shoulders."Oh, sorry." Elias hurriedly took off his head, smiling. "So what does your heart say?""I don't know." She answered honestly, there was no need to sugar-coat words. "But I know that I don't want to give up

Chapter 19: Heart And Not Head.

Ana sighed. Lucas was now calm and the room had resumed its silence. Everyone has forgotten about stopping her from going after Ben's corpse and she'd also forgotten about it.What was more important now, was her getting to know Christopher to find out more about how he managed to survive. She just had this feeling that she'd be able to find something useful out of him. Maybe a way to leave this place and get to Sephora, or a way for them to stand a chance against the monsters. Either one would be deeply appreciated. She didn't need a priest to tell her that Lucas wanted out of the place they were and a safe haven at Sephora or that they needed to find a way to fight those monsters. Or that they will end up with nothing if they remain idle. It's time to put in more effort. She thought and went over to Elias' side, bent to whisper something in his ears. Initially, his eyes widened in surprise but after calmly listening to Ana, he nodded in affirmation to whatever they had discussed.Of

With everyone staring at him surprised, Lucas was caught off guard. "What?!""What do you mean what? You know just what I mean.""Well, I just think the boy needs a checkup. Is there anything wrong with that?""Be nice," Ana said."Of course. I'm only worried about his health." With that, Lucas took several steps backwards and sat alone, further away from them.Elias sighed. "Let's focus on the most pressing issue now. Your arguments and tantrums won't be of help in any way so I rather you all move aside and let me handle this."Of course, they stepped aside. Elias was like their second leader aside from Ana and Natalie would prefer listening to him than Ana so she strolled towards the door and sat next to it."Sure, no problem," Lucas said, moving back to his original position. All this while, Carson didn't interfere with their conversation nor did he join them in their arguments. Everyone was quiet. "Impossible!" Elias shook his head, "he's supposed to be in a coma but he's awake so quick?!""Cut it out already. It's annoying to watch you pacing." Ana said, crossing her arms across her chest, and looking lazily at Elias it was only then he realized how pathetic he looked. He stopped pacing, "oh, sorry." He said and walked towards the boy whose pair of forest green eyes never left his. The fear and strangeness with which he started at Elias made the latter feel guilty. It was understandable. Waking up to facing people who doubt and question the reason you decided to open your eyes to behold the world when they'd already accepted the fact that you may not wake up for a least a month or two.Elias thought maybe a year.
