RICHARD’S POV

"So, you're telling me your family is holding off on marrying you off like some prized pony, all for a shot at this consortium?" I asked, stirring the ice in my scotch.

Amelia nodded earnestly, her brow furrowed with concern. "It's not exactly like that," she said, a slight blush creeping up her neck. "They just think it would be a good opportunity for the family business."

I chuckled. "Right, and I'm sure they wouldn't dream of picking a suitable bachelor with excellent connections if you fail."

She shot me a playful glare. "You're enjoying this, aren't you?"

"A lot," I admitted, taking a sip of my drink. "But hey, maybe I can offer some advice. You never know, I might even have a few connections myself."

Amelia's eyes widened. "You're serious? You could actually help?"

I leaned back, enjoying her sudden surge of hope. "Well, I am a member of this illustrious Business Consortium you speak of."

The look on her face was priceless. Pure, unrefined hock. "You're kidd

RICHARD'S POV My phone rang in my pocket, a familiar vibration that sent a jolt of anxiety through me. It was my father, and judging by the long line of increasingly worked up messages that followed, whatever it was, it couldn't wait."Look," I said, trying to keep the irritation out of my voice (and failing miserably). "I need to pay for that bracelet. Now."She barely glanced up from admiring her reflection in the glass countertop, her perfectly manicured fingers tracing the line of a diamond necklace – one she hadn't paid for, I might add. "Darling, I told you, I’m still deciding. You can wait till I'm done.”The audacity of this woman. This wasn't even a queue; I was trying to buy the damn thing! A low growl built in my chest, but I swallowed it down. There is no time for this nonsense. "With all due respect," I said, my voice tight, "I'm ready to purchase right now. While you’re still… considering.”She finally turned her head, a slow, condescending smile spreading across her

RICHARD'S POVMr Dennis gave me a ride to my father's villa when I finished at the jewelry store. He gave my shoulder a reassuring pat before I hopped out of his car. "Give your father my best, Richard," he said, his face a mask of concern. "I will, sir. Thank you again for the ride," I replied, forcing a smile. I wasn't sure what I'd find inside. The texts from my father had been frantic, filled with words like "chest pain" and "can't breathe."When I went into the house, I felt a strange feeling. The house was not quiet like usual. There was a strange feeling in the air. Jonathan and William, my stepbrothers, were sitting in the living room like vultures waiting to eat something dead."Well, well, look who decided to grace us with his presence," Jonathan drawled, his voice dripping with sarcasm. He didn't even bother looking up from his phone. William, never one to be outdone, let out a loud snorting sound like a pig struggling for truffles. "Heard you were playing doctor these

RICHARD'S POV The old man's breathing finally calmed, his chest rising and falling in a normal rhythm. I almost smirked. Showman, that's me. “Just stay the night, son. Please?” Dad’s voice was thick with emotion, his hand gripping my shoulder like he was afraid I’d disappear. Honestly, if I had the energy, I might have. “Dad, come on,” I sighed, rubbing a hand down my face. He flinched, that hopeful glint in his eyes dimming a bit. Damn, he was good at the whole wounded puppy act. “I just… I feel like we could talk, you know? Really talk.” Right. Talk. Because that’s what we did in this family – air out our feelings and hug it out. Maybe it was the exhaustion talking. I should have known better than to be surprised. It was always about him, wasn't it? But against my better judgment, I agreed. “Fine,” I muttered, already regretting the word. “But I'm ordering pizza.” The pizza was, thankfully, from a decent place. Dad even sprang for extra pepperoni, my favor

RICHARD’S POV He sighed again, this time it sounded more like a groan. “Look, Richard, all I’m saying is… I want to make things right. I want to be a father to you, if you’ll let me.” "Let me get this straight," I said, leaning back and folding my arms. "After all these years, after ignoring me, pretending I didn't exist, you want to suddenly be a father?" He looked down at his hands, his face flushed. He looked up at me, his eyes pleading. “Give me another chance, Richard. Please.” I held his gaze for a long moment, letting the silence stretch between us. Part of me, the angry, bitter part, wanted to tell him to shove it. To tell him he’d had his chance and blown it. But there was another part, a small, flickering part that wanted to believe him. That craved a father's love, even if it was years overdue. "Fine," I finally said, my voice gruff. "But this doesn't change anything. We'll take it slow, one day at a time." He beamed, his face lighting up like a kid at Christmas. “Th

RICHARD'S POV Man, the things we do for respect. I swear, inviting the Chairman over wouldn't be such a big deal if I didn’t have to prove a point. First the penthouse suite, now a brand new car. This better be worth it. The Chairman deserved a grand invitation, a statement. And what better statement than rolling up in a brand new set of wheels? This dealership was supposed to be one of the best in town, all sleek lines and that new car smell. I was ready to throw down some serious cash. Except, the second I walked through the door, I saw her. Brenda? Brenda freaking Miller? Or whatever-her-name-was, from high school. What are the odds? She was perched behind a massive desk, all sleek hair and power suit, looking like she owned the place. Well, I guess she kind of did. The universe had a messed up sense of humor. “Brenda? Wow, hey! Didn’t expect to see you here.” I tried to sound casual, but honestly, seeing her brought back a flood of memories. Mostly bad ones involving her

RICHARD'S POVBrenda’s laughter echoed through the dealership, bouncing off the gleaming hoods of cars I could apparently never afford. " ‘Richard the Beggar’, buying a car here? Honey, you must be lost. The used car lot is two blocks down.""Funny, Brenda," I said, my voice flat. "Last time I checked, I wasn't asking for a handout. I'm here to buy, not beg.""Oh, I'm sure you are, sweetie," she said, her voice dripping with false sweetness. "But let's be realistic, those clunkers with the 'For Sale' signs taped to the windows? Those are more your speed.""Brenda, you seem to have forgotten that people grow up. And some of us even become successful," I said, fighting the urge to roll my eyes. "Maybe stop judging a book by its dusty old cover?""Successful?" she scoffed. "You? Please. What are you now, Richard, Assistant Regional Manager of Paperclip Sales? Look, I've got real customers to deal with. So, how about you take your faded jeans and your empty wallet and...""Empty wallet?

RICHARD’SPOV "Are you sure that's real?" Brenda sputtered, her perfectly manicured fingernail finding its way between her teeth. "That transfer, I mean. It's not... manipulated or anything?" I laughed. "Honey, you're starting to sound paranoid. You think I hacked into Bill Gates' account or something?" "Well, you never know these days," she mumbled, her eyes darting between Hawthorne's phone and the door, as if expecting the FBI to storm in and arrest me for fraud. "For all we know, you could be running some elaborate scam." "Brenda, sweetheart, if I were running a scam, don't you think I'd aim a little higher than a used car dealership?" I said, my voice laced with amusement. “I could have easily swiped my card at Hawthorne Motors, you know. Saved us both a lot of time. But where's the fun in that? I wanted you to see this. To see the opportunity you just flushed down the toilet with your little judgmental attitude." Brenda went silent, her face a mask of disbelief and dawni

RICHARD'S POV Hamilton (owner of the dealership Brenda worked as manager) finally coughed upan apology for the embarrassment and disrespect I had faced in his dealership, but the damage was done. My afternoon was shot. Didn't matter much. Thankfully, Hawthorne, the manager of the rival dealership, was a breath of fresh air, and he was already practically vibrating with excitement. I followed him to his dealership just across the street. Hawthorne's place was a display of amazingly shiny cars and a glass palace compared to the dealership Brenda was managing. He slapped the keys to the car into my palm, a grin stretching ear to ear. "She's all yours, champ. But seriously, dude, that thing's a beast. Don't go wrapping it around a telephone pole on your way out, alright?Honestly, who wants to drive a brand newbeauty through rush hour traffic?"Nah, tell you what," I said, leaning back inthe plush leather chair, "Why don’t you save me the hassle.”“Sure,” he said with a smile. “Eve

RICHARD’S POV—THREE YEARS LATER I ran around the living room, chasing our twins in some endless game of tag. They were shrieking with laughter, little feet pounding on the floor, and honestly, it was the best sound in the world. But just as I made a playful grab for them, Amelia walked in with a tray of biscuits and gave me one of her classic mom-glares.“Really, Richard?” she said, exasperated but trying not to smile. “If you keep chasing them like that, they’re going to fall. And then who’s getting up at night with them when they’re crying? Not me, that’s for sure.”I stopped in my tracks and threw my hands up in surrender. “Alright, alright! You win. Kids, you heard your mother. Grab a biscuit and calm down, alright? Before we all get grounded.”The twins scrambled toward the tray, wide-eyed and hungry like they hadn’t just had breakfast an hour ago. Amelia rolled her eyes at me, handing the kids each a biscuit before turning her gaze on me.“No biscuit for you, mister,” she tease

RICHARD’S POVI sat there, tapping my foot against the cold tile, waiting for the doctor to come in. Amelia was beside me, looking exhausted from my dragging her here yet again. But we were here, and I’d finally get some peace of mind. The door opened, and Dr. Geller strolled in, looking... oddly cheerful. He scanned his clipboard before smiling at both of us. “Well,” he said, “I’ve got some news that I think you’re going to like.”Amelia glanced at me, raising an eyebrow. “He didn’t find anything, right? See, I told you, Richard…”“No, no,” Dr. Geller cut in, chuckling. “Nothing bad. Quite the opposite, actually.”I held my breath, narrowing my eyes at him. “Spit it out, Doc. I don’t do suspense.”He grinned, finally setting down the clipboard. “Amelia, congratulations. You’re pregnant. Again.”For a split second, I thought he was joking. But then it hit me like a tidal wave, and I shot to my feet. “Are you serious?!” I practically yelled, and probably looked like a lunatic, but I di

  • CHAPTER TWO HUNDRED AND THIRTY

RICHARD’S POV—THREE WEEKS LATER Arriving home with the bouquet in one hand and Amelia’s favorite snacks in the other, I hoped today would lift her spirits, even a little. She hadn’t been herself since...well, since the loss. Three weeks, and yet it felt like everything had been hollowed out.As soon as I opened the door, the tense vibe hit me like a wall. Amelia was sitting there on the couch, pale but trying to keep calm, while her grandmother loomed over her with that steely look. The minute she spotted me, her eyes narrowed like she’d been waiting for this.“Richard,” she spat, voice low and biting, “this is all on you. You should have done better. Protected her, watched out for her—”“Enough,” I cut in, barely keeping my voice steady. I didn’t want a scene, not in front of Amelia. But I couldn’t just let this go. “If you’re going to blame someone, find a mirror.”Her face twisted, anger flaring up, and for a second I thought she’d come closer. “How dare you,” she snapped. “How da

RICHARD’S POVDinner was quiet tonight. Too quiet. Amelia had barely touched her food, just pushing it around on her plate with this distant look in her eyes. I asked her if she was alright, and she’d just given me a tired smile and said she was fine. But something didn’t sit right. Still, I let it go, figuring she’d open up when she was ready.Upstairs, I lay on the bed waiting while she went into the bathroom. She closed the door behind her, and I stretched out, hands behind my head, staring up at the ceiling. The day had been long, and I was looking forward to nothing more than a quiet evening with her, maybe watch some dumb movie and unwind. But then I heard it—a loud voice cutting through the silence, sharp and strained. It was Amelia. A cry, filled with pain.I sat up so fast, my heart instantly in my throat. “Amelia?” I called, already on my feet and moving towards the door. There was no answer, only a muffled groan that sent my pulse skyrocketing.“Amelia, are you okay?” I ask

RICHARD’S POVAmelia stared at me, her arms crossed, her eyes hard. I knew that look. It wasn't good.“He deserves whatever he's getting. Richard. You know that, right?"Her words hit me like a slap. I frowned, trying to keep calm. “Amelia, come on. He's still my brother. I know he messed up, but he's still family.” She shook her head, almost scoffing. "So what? Family doesn't mean you get a free pass to be a complete asshole and try to ruin someone's life.”I sighed, leaning back against the chair. "I'm not saying he should get a free pass. l'm just saying.. maybe he did what he did out of anger, or resentment, or-""Maybe?!" she cut me off, her voice rising. “Richard, he tried to kill you. He tied me up and used me as bait! I don't care if he was angry or resentful, that doesn't give him a damn excuse to behave like a psychopath!”I winced at her words. She wasn't wrong, but still… “Look, I know he crossed the line. A million times over. But people do stupid things when they're des

RICHARD’S POV I froze, my breath catching in my throat as the bang reverberated through the room. For a second, everything was still. Silent. I looked down. Blood. Not mine. William gasped, his eyes wide with shock as he stared at the wound in his side. The gun slipped from his hand, clattering uselessly to the floor. I stumbled back, hands slick with blood, heart pounding so hard it felt like it was about to explode. The sound of the gunshot kept echoing in my ears like a bad dream, but this wasn’t a dream. William—my brother—was bleeding out on the floor. “Shit,” I gasped, rushing toward him. “Will… Goddamn it, stay with me!” His face was pale, eyes half-closed as he struggled to breathe. Blood poured from his side, seeping through my fingers as I pressed down hard. Too hard. It didn’t matter. “You’re gonna be fine. Hear me? You’re gonna be fine. Just hold on.” He coughed, a weak, bitter laugh escaping his lips. “Richard… you always… always screw things up, don’t you?” “Shut

  • CHAPTER TWO HUNDRED AND TWENTY-SIX

RICHARD’S POV “William," I said out loud. His body stiffened. He turned slowly to face me, his mask still on, but I knew it was him. The way he moved, his voice earlier—it all made sense now. “Take off the mask, man,” I said, my tone calm but laced with anger. “I know it’s you.” For a second, William didn’t move. Then, with a slow, deliberate motion, he pulled the mask off, revealing that familiar face. There was a twisted smirk on his lips, his eyes gleaming with hatred. I hated how much we looked alike—same damn smirk, same sharp features. “Smart as always, aren’t you, Richard?” he spat, lifting a gun and pointing it straight at me. “But not smart enough.” Great, now two guns were aimed at my head. Just another day in paradise. I grinned at him, trying to ignore the sweat dripping down my back. “William, c’mon. I don’t want trouble. I just want Amelia. Give me my wife, and I’ll walk out of here. No drama.” William let out a harsh laugh, shaking his head. “Oh, you’re funny. Rea

  • CHAPTER TWO HUNDRED AND TWENTY-FIVE

RICHARD’S POV We arrived at the building, and it looked dead—no lights, no signs of life, just an old, worn-down structure. My heart pounded in my chest, but I didn’t have time to feel fear. Not when Amelia was in there. Somewhere. The police moved quietly, guns raised, signaling me to stay back. But there was no way in hell I was sitting this one out. As we entered the place, it smelled of damp wood and dust. My stomach churned, my instincts screaming that something was wrong. But then, just as I was about to dismiss the silence as a bad sign, I heard it—a voice. One I recognized. I froze. Was that…? “Goddamn it!” The voice was angry, echoing through the hollow space. “The bastard’s smarter than I thought. Papers! Can you believe this shit?” He was yelling into the phone, furious about something. The guy kept going on and on, cursing me for filling the bag with papers instead of the ransom money. I crouched behind a half-broken wall, trying to get a better listen, my breath sha

RICHARD’S POV Morning came quicker than I wanted. I stood in front of the mirror, staring at my own reflection, trying to calm my nerves. My heart was pounding in my chest, but I had to keep it together. Today was the day. The bag of fake cash sat on the bed, looking too light for the weight of what was at stake. I picked it up, slinging it over my shoulder like I was just going to the gym. If only it were that simple. The police were already outside, setting up, tapping into my phone like we’d planned. I headed out, feeling the cold air hit me as I got into my car. The drive to the location was tense, my hands gripping the steering wheel so tightly that my knuckles turned white. I knew they were following me. Harris was in an unmarked car a few blocks back, probably sipping coffee like this was just another day for him. The location was a grimy parking lot, empty except for a few abandoned cars. The place looked like the kind of spot you’d find in a crime movie, the kind where not
