High up on the mountain of Kiarra lays a sacred temple, resplendent in its glory yet invisible to the human eyes.
The raw energy shimmering off it was palpable that even the ever-present fogs in the forest that surrounded mountain Kiarra itself peeled back from the temple as if afraid of what it housed. The forest was alive with movements, chirpings and glorious calls of one mate to the other yet the sacred temple had a stillness to it.
The forked entrance beckoned on the bold to approach it as only few would dare venture into it unsummon. The Temple of Awakening.
Kostos, the 10th generation ancestors of all vampires stood deep in the temple that had the ambience of a cave with its still airs and plopping sounds that rumbled throughout the structure even though no dripping could be found.
His bloodred robe, trimmed with the most exquisite gold pattern billowed in the still air as he summoned the one who waited in the temple for ages.
In an ancient language, he called forth “Saum nabrati uni damianus”
The air shifted and settled back, where there had been nothing but emptiness a moment before appeared a young-looking man, who couldn’t be more than a nineteen-year-old. A vampire who had been in existence for almost five centuries.
He opened his eyes and the rarest shade of blue, the shade of lapis lazuli looked reverently at his master from a face sculpted to perfection. A beautiful face for a man framed by the rarest shade of white hair that would have made a regular man look gaunt but fit perfectly with his honey-toned skin.
“Master,” he said and his voice reverberated through the temple.
Kostos turned to him with a hint of a smile on his rugged-looking face.
“You are ready,” he said simply “My time here is done and it is time for me to go back to the World of Origins. To take up my duties over there just as you would be taking over your duties here in the world of humans”
A faint sad line marred the face of the young man and it was evident that he did not want his master to leave.
Three thousand years of living had not dulled Kostos’s senses to feelings. Be it that of humans or the supernaturals so he knew what the boy was feeling but responsibilities couldn’t be avoided after all. And he knew that the boy was ready. He had made sure of it.
“Come, Damianus” he motioned to the young man.
Damianus stepped towards his master with sadness. He knew he shouldn’t feel that way as he was about to undergo what his master had done before him, he was about to fulfil what he had been fated for.
Kosmos put his arms around the boy as he led him forward “This is what you are born for. My time here is up and yours is about to begin. You need to go out there in the world to gain experience to gain more powers that would make you worthy of veneration. That is when you would be able to lead. That is when you would have what it takes to rule”
Damianus nodded as Kosmos left his side to encompass the temple as if the world was contained in it. “Go out there and make a place for yourself and our kind. Make use of what all your learnings and teachings of many years have taught you. You can never really live until you practice them. The Book would not be able to give you all the needed experience. You have to be out there. But…”
He turned back towards Damianus, his voice and expression changing in warning “You are not to destroy the cities with your powers nor are you to use them unfairly. If you do, The Order would simply take up your case and as you have seen, it had never been favourable to the perpetrator”
“Yes, Master,” Damianus said as a slight shiver went through him when he remembered the punishment of The Order. No perpetrator could escape it no matter how old or powerful they were. It was what kept the balance in the World of Origins and its power was supreme to all.
No, Damianus would never wish the wrath of The Order on anyone.
“But again” Kosmos continued “You are not to back down or let yourself be taken advantage of. These humans, as much as they could be good, also have lots of bad among them and if you are not careful, they will railroad you. You are not to give room to that but then you have to be discreet. The world out there is different from what you are used to”
Damianus nodded “Yes, master”
Kosmos looked at the bent head of his mentee and decided that there were some things that the lad needed to learn on his own. He was smart enough to figure out other things by himself. After all, how would he be able to handle things properly if he was told everything? He needed to experience it.
“Stretched forth your hand. Your left hand” Kosmos said and Damianus did as he was told. Kosmos slipped the plain-looking hewn ring that had been etched with dragon fire off his thumb slowly.
His ringed fingers were filled with different rings, at least three on each finger but this ring was the only one on his thumb. The most important one.
The Ring of the Origins. The symbol of the ancestor of all supernatural beings on earth.
He slipped it carefully onto Damianus’s thumb and thunder clapped in the sky causing a reverberation in the temple and a stir in the World of the Origins.
Damianus felt his eyes widen as warm, blinding light ricocheted behind his lids and his body seemed elevated.
Kosmos explained the power of the ring and what it could do to him. Damianus was amazed by the extent of the powerful influence of the plain-looking ring, the least of it is that the ring could store whatever Damianus wanted in it no matter how large.
After his final instruction had been given, Kosmos raised his hand towards a section of the temple with his eyes closed and a portal opened up. The pulsing, crackling circle alive with worlds beyond it was the same as what his master had used to summon him to the temple years ago so Damianus knew that it was time for his master’s departure.
Saying his goodbyes to his pets who had listened on silently as he gave his instructions to his mentee, Kosmos gave Damianus a message-filled nod and stepped through the portal. The air crackled and the portal closed behind him.
The air settled back in the temple again and everything seemed as it was.
Everything apart from Damianus’ status.
Everything but the power coursing through him. The power was incomparable to what he felt when he finally mastered the art of drawing the moon’s essence.
He shook off his melancholy about his master’s departure and excitement filled his heart as he let himself think of the things he had learnt about the world of humans back in the World of Origins and since he got to the temple.
He couldn’t wait to explore what was beyond the temple.
“You would fit right in… maybe with just a little adjustment” Helios, the thousand-year-old bat of Master Kosmos who had been silent since spoke up as he felt the excitement of his master’s protege.
“You think?” Damianus asked excitedly as he turned to the massive bat that seemed sculpted into the walls of the temple. He was the size of a basketball court and Damianus had never seen it move from that spot since he got to the temple years ago. Though he had seen it in action before. Once.
Helios looked at Damianus’ roughhewn full-skirted knee-length coat, knee breeches and long waistcoat and repeated “Like I said, perfectly with just a tiny bit of adjustment”
Damianus could not allow himself to be deterred by the sarcastic note in Helios's voice.
It was time to go.
He bade the pets that his master had collected over the centuries goodbye; the Fennec Fox, the raven, and his favourite of them all, Helios. They all have their powers but Helios was the only one that speaks.
His witty, mischievous nature had kept Damianus entertained most of the time.
Just as he was about to leave, he turned towards Helios with a grin.
“What?” the bat asked with suspicion in his eyes.
Damianus rubbed his thumb ring as his grin widened “On second thought…”
The least of Damianus’ power was the fact that he could teleport as simply as he could blink. He knew that would have been the easiest thing to do to get himself from where he was to where he wanted to be, the world of humans. Yet he decided to apply caution since he have no idea if they would frown upon suddenly seeing him in their midst. Since he had no idea of a particular location to put his mind on when he teleported, he knew he could appear at any random place. What if he appeared amidst a crowd?“That would be inconvenient to explain” he smiled to himself on his way down the mountain. For a vampire who was used to simply getting himself to wherever he wanted to be by conjuring it in his mind, having to deal with the rocky path down the eerie-looking mountain was a bit inconvenient.Still, he made do. After all, he had the super speed to help smooth his journey.Damianus had not been marvelled by the changes he saw as he came down the mountain as it was just a little bit differ
Damianus was surprised when the youngest of the two beautiful girls, who were standing prettily while men admired them, stalked towards him with anger distorting her beautiful face. On close look, he could see that her eyes were filled with fury and before he could comprehend what was happening, she raised her hand to slap him!“What?!” Damianus thought in confusion as he automatically dodged her swinging hand. The speed with which he had been able to dodge her slap infuriated Sybil. In truth, Damianus did not think of it but being an original had its perks after all and he need not stress himself to teleport. In truth, he could break her in half if he so wished but in his confusion, he did not even think of hurting her or not. He merely wondered what he had done for the pretty girl he saw laughing a while ago to want to hit him.A human girl for that matter. Damianus almost laughed aloud at the impertinence but he could see that the girl was not amused at all as she turned to him aga
Intending not to risk what had happened before or any other distraction that could delay him from where he was going, Damianus cast a spell on himself that made him invisible to human eyes. Since they couldn’t see him anyway and couldn’t be shocked by whatever he did, he decided to teleport to his destination. The Grand Palace of Santa Eyre.Santa Eyre practised the monarchical system of government. It had been so since the inception of the city back when it was but a town and other cities used the executive form of government, The Great king of Santa Eyre, King Saldus Kovarick was the current ruler of the state. His power was like that of a governor who doubled as a monarch. Kovarick is a powerful ruler. More powerful than the richest family in the city, The Macmillan. The great wealth and affluence of the king could be seen in his majestic palace made mostly of gold, what was not made of gold was substituted with expensive bronze, iron ore and brass. After all only the best could fi
“Did you hear that, Rey? Call out the leader for me” one of them mimicked Damianus’ distinct accent. Damianus decided that he had enough and since he had no intention of tearing the idiot kids from limb to limb for their rudeness, he turned towards the inner chamber. “Cain Barlan” he called without raising his voice. The “boys' ' eyes widened in fear and their faces whitened. They saw that he did not raise his voice yet the sound of his voice resounded in their minds and they could hear the echoes of it deep in the base of their homes. Before they could get out of their shocked state to say anything, elders of the clan and others started coming out of the entrance behind them. When gates were pulled open, a glimpse behind them indicated that a whole dwelling had been carved underground beneath the backyard of the grand palace. A dwelling the human had no idea of nor could most of them believe possible for anyone. The dwellers are not just anyone though. They are the vampires of th
“Oh come now. There is no need for such ceremony between us” Damianus said with a smile then as if he just remembered something, he clicked his fingers “Oh, get up, get up”They all stood.“Thank you, Origin leader,” Michael said and they all echoed the same thing.“That is such a mouthful, don’t you think?” he said with his eyes on the leader, who looked back at him incomprehensively.“The title, I mean” Damianus clarified “Damianus”“No, I am not…oh” Michael looked at him as comprehension dawned “You are Damianus”“Yes, the name I was born with. Let us dispense with the formalities and I will take the liberty of calling you, Michael. Is that fine?”“Of course, Or… erm, Damianus,” he said, the strange name sounding awkward to his ears as he pronounced it.Damianus tilted his head as if considering something “Listening to you call the name made it seem like it is a mouthful too” he smiled before turning towards the young vampires who were rude to him earlier. The smile on his face was
A knock sounded on the office door and one of the elders close to the door stood up to enquire who was there so he could know if he should send them on their way if it was not something important. He wondered who it was as it was common knowledge that no one was supposed to disturb the leader when he was in session with the elders.“Yes?” he said as he opened the door to a young lady standing outside the door with her hands raised to knock on the door again. She wiped her hands nervously on her apron when the elder glared at her.“Oh, I am sorry for the interruption, elder. The leader said I should inform him when we are done so I…”“What about?” the man cut her off.“It's okay, Aaron” Michael called from his seat “I told her to knock when they are through. Let her come in ” Aaron nodded and went back to his seat “Is it ready then, Solara?”“Yes, leader,” the lady said with a slight bow.“Excellent,” he said with a smile then looked over at Damianus “My leader, refreshments are ready.
“Hmm,” Damianus said in thought, as he rubbed his finger on his upper lip “So, what you are saying is that I will have to be part of a kind of society to be fully immersed in the way they…you do things in this new world”The elders hummed in agreement.“I would suggest you start by enrolling in high school, leader” Sky, the youngest of the elders suggested. His black hoodie gave his lean body a much younger look and no one could have easily detected that despite his youthful look, he was over two hundred years too. His mischievousness could be detected in his twinkling eyes though and a smile touched Damianus' lips as he looked straight at him “What is this high school of yours?”Sky proceeded to explain to him how it was the middle school needed to gain admission into a college.“And what is a collage?” Damianus asked as he thought of what he had read in The Book. The Book only mentioned a university and as it explained it was similar to the academy of transition back in the world
“A pretentious Asshole” Aaron snorted at Damianus' question.“Aaron” Michael called in a warning.“I am sorry, my leader” Aaron said in apology and he turned away to look out the window. One could see that the mere mention of the Unclan angered him and Damianus wondered why that was the case.“Aaron here is a stickler for rules, as I am sure you must have noticed,” Michael said to Damianus with a smile “And the Unclan is the opposite of that” he explained.“Oh?” Damianus said with a smile as he leaned back in his chair to listen. “That term is what we use generally for a group of vampires that had chosen not to live the conservative lowkey life. They are everywhere in Santa Eyre and all over the world now. They engage in politics and make friends freely with humans. Throw lavish parties” Michael sighed “All in all, they found it inelegant and out-of-character that we would choose to live in seclusion like this” he smiled slightly “One even said to my face that I was a coward for sug
Months Later...Damien stood in the palace of Santa Eyre. He was looking down through a concealed portico at the people down in the palace waiting room. The creme de la creme of Santa Eyre was down there. All of them were waiting for him to see them on one issue or the other. It had been the routine for Damien for the past months now. There had been a lot to deal with, after their encounter with Ulric. The King's burial had been an international affair. King Saldus had been a very influential and well-beloved king. Presidents of countries, well-known CEOs all over the world, and dignitaries from different continents were in Santa Eyre, for days, to celebrate the dead king. They all believed that the king had died peacefully in his sleep. Only Damien and his inner circle knew that there was more to the king's death. There had been a dark essence to his chakras. Damien still couldn't come to terms with how much Ulric took from them. The call Allan received after the battle with Ulric,
Total darkness filled the whole house as the power supply went off all of a sudden. The only silhouette that could be seen was the dark mass gathering again in the middle of the room. It was so massive and tall that it seemed like a giant was forming out of it. The witches rallied together and a spark of fire ignited above them to conquer the dark. Light could be seen from afar but the immediate environment of Damien’s house was as dark as the void itself. “I will purge you abominations from this earth!” came the terrifying voice of Ulric as the darkness swirled around the lights and they all went out again. One of the witches screeched, and by the time the magic light was lit again, she could be seen grabbing her throat, as blood poured out of her mouth and sunken eyes. “We need to take this motherfucker out!” Liam shouted and the rest were right with him. Damien took the lead as they charged the dark mass again. Damien released the orb and every protective substance he had in t
Everyone in the room looked at each other as the mocking voice of the man they all knew, had heard of, and heard of resounded throughout the house. The distortion to his voice was horrid and the frightening element in it was only causing more fear in those around. Only the leaders were still stoic. The soldiers were half paralysed with fright as King Saldus went on and on to describe explicit ways that they would all be obliterated that night. Exactly at 11:58 pm, the voice stopped talking and Isabella’s phone exploded right there in the middle of the room. It was charred beyond recognition. A blast of wind rocked the shingles of the house. Suddenly, the witches all exclaimed “Stench of the underworld” A knock sounded at the door at exactly 12:00 am. They all looked at each other and beneath the bravado, was a hint of apprehension. They all knew that they might not come out of this alive. Still, the witches flung the door open by magic and someone tumbled inside. Even as everyone
Sky did not wake up immediately. Morgan tried to wake him up but she eventually looked up at Damien and others. “I think he used up his vitality. Ulric did something else with Sky that he had never done with any other host before. He used him up. He might…he might never wake up” she said with a sigh of defeat. “No, no. that is not possible. Do something leader. You have to do something!” Michael said in desperation. Damien knew that but then he thought of the fact that Ulric might want to use Sky’s condition as a distraction for them while he strike from elsewhere. Damien was the head of the group and their link make them strong together, just as he make them vulnerable together as well. If Damien was caught in the realm while trying to heal Sky, any damage done to him at that moment will affect the whole group as well. He was sure that Ulric had a plan to do something to them while they were trying to heal Sky. Though it was difficult for him to do; he had to ask “How long can he
“You changed her?” Michael confronted Damien the moment he got back to the house. He had to teleport Laura back with him since she was still very much out of it. He had just placed her in his room, where Morgan and Isabella were keeping an eye on her when Michael confronted him just as he came out of his suite. Here we go. He thought. Anger welled in him for the reminder of his guilt. He respected Micahel for being a stickler for rules but at the moment, he did not care to be reminded that he had failed to protect his woman. He did not need the clan leader to rub more salt unto his wound. Not at all.“If you have a thing to say, just say it,” Damien said as he bypassed Michael on his way to the main floor.“If I…” Michael paused in disbelief then he lengthened his stride to meet up with that Damien. “If I have a thing to say? We never change humans. You know how precarious they could be and you went to turn one of them?”“She is one of us now,” Damien said as he turned back to face hi
Sybill Macmillan couldn’t believe what was happening! When Andrea called her to inform her, she thought that her bratty sister was just acting up. Truth be said, Andrea didn’t appear as bratty as she used to be. Sybill felt it must have to do with the fact that she didn’t have to see her daily anymore. It had all started long before Sybll left for school. Andrea had capitalised on her invitation to the palace by the king, an invitation orchestrated by that nobody. Damien. Sybill still couldn’t think of him without distaste in her mouth but she didn’t dare say any of her thoughts aloud.Who could have thought that a mere gawking, gardener? A good-for-nothing would turn out to be a prince. A referred prince for that matter that the whole of Santa Eyre and its environs had become submissive to. Sybill snorted as she remembered the rumour she had once heard that the king intended to pass the throne to Damien. Sybill doubted if the king would be so dumb to do such a thing. Why would a man
Laura’s awakening was messy, to say the least. She woke up hours later feeling disoriented, groggy and out of it. It took her a while to recognise Damien. Then she blurted out “I love you” thoughtlessly. In the next moment, she was shouting bout feeling so thirsty, then she started pulling at her hair and agitating about hating her skin. Her clothes felt too tight. Her head hurt and she felt like she would die if she did not eat something.Damien knew what was happening. Despite how much he wanted to ignore it, the inevitable couldn’t be denied. Laura had become a vampire and if he did not do something about it, she would die within the first hour of her awakening. He tried to talk to her during that moment to see if she would rather choose to die than become a fully-formed vampire, yet it was like singing a lullaby to a deaf kid. She could hear him. She seemed to have some iota of consciousness but she was not comprehending what he was saying.“Okay, okay. Can I eat now?” was the ans
It finally dawned on Damien why Sky/Ulric wanted him to see him draining the life out of Laura. It was just so he could make a difficult decision or live eternally with the guilt of causing the death of the girl that he only belatedly realized he loved. Tears trailed down Morgan’s face as she stood up. “It is no use. I…I can’t do it. There is nothing to draw from. I can’t heal her.” She spread her bloodied hands to the sides as anguish soaked her voice. “My hands are filled with her blood, and I can’t bring her back. I was supposed to be better than this”“Now, now. You shouldn’t beat yourself up, A Ghra. This is not your fault” he looked straight at Damien over Morgan’s head “This mess was not for you to sort”“What the hell did you just call me? How can you be so cold and glib right now?” Morgan lashed out at him. “An innocent girl is dying for God’s sake. She did nothing wrong! She is dying and there is nothing I can do. That… bastard drained her lifeblood. He wanted us to watch h
Laura called him in the wee hours of the following morning. He almost couldn’t believe his eyes as the true caller on his phone identified the number. The call brought back the memory of the kiss they had shared and the messy feelings that seemed to take hold of him whenever he heard her name or that of anyone related to her. “Laura?” he called her name like a question. “You are…”“Awwn, isn’t this sweet?” everything stilled inside Damien as he heard Sky’s voice. Fuck it! He yelled in his mind, knowing immediately that damage had been done. If not, why would…Laura!“What have you done to her, Ulric?” Damien asked instantly.“Ulric? Who is that? There is only your buddy, Sky, here. Remember me?” Sky’s horrid tone said over the phone.Damien quelled all forms of imagination that wanted to come to his head about what could have happened to her as he said calmly “She has nothing to do with this. I thought you were said to be a wise man. Surely, you must know that she is a human and she i
