Sky had to ask for a favour from one of his friends so that Damien could change in his car before they head to class. The guy gave Damien a derogatory look as he asked where Sky knew such a loser from.“Just stuff it and let me know if you would let him change in your car or not, Cade” sky said in anger and the other guys that were hitching a ride to school with Cade laughed at Damien the way they had done earlier when Sky brought out the school uniform; a white shirt with Maryland badge to the left, blue long trousers and a checkered blue and white tie; Damien exclaimed in excitement about how the uniform reminded him of a robin egg.Some of them who had not even set their eyes on the egg before wondered what the loser with the strange accent was talking about and they all laughed out loud at his dishevelled look.Damien couldn’t explain to them of course that he almost missed the time they agreed on to meet before HG Salem choose that morning to tell Damien to get him bags of mulch.

Just like a phoenix rising out of the ashes of the unremarkable buildings close to it, Maryland High School stood magnificent and different from most buildings that Damien had seen so far. Not even the shopping center he had seen the other looked this magnificent. The land was so expanse that Damien couldn’t see its end from where he stood, openly gaping at the white-walled six-story building. Uniformed security men stood at attention at the entrance enclosed with a marble-walled fence and two giant, black wrought iron gates that opened up to the magnificent grounds of the school that had a uniquely designed driveway that veered to different sections in the school compound. After greeting the guards at the gate, who gave Damien a questioning look; Sky took the lane that led up to the main door of the school main door. Sylvestro, the principal of Maryland High School said when Damien entered her office.Sky winced at the principal’s high-pitched voice and he looked back at Damien as if just seeing him as he thought of how Damien must look to a woman who was used to only seeing her students at their very best. The ensuing events of the day did nothing to dim the excitement inside Damien at finally being in “high” school. The high school had been nothing like what he had imagined and he was happy that he could finally make it. Damien was more grateful to Leah at that moment than he had been originally when she felt promised him that he would be able to attend.When Cade thought he was ridiculing Damien, all Damien could think about was how much more people he was going to see and get to mingle with. He had checked on his phone in the past few days to know what to expect. He knew that he would at least get to be part of a community bigger than the few workers he had come across at the Macmillans.Even though the Macmillans have a lot of workers on their cotton plantation and many working in the gardens, Damien only sees most of them as they come and leave and they snubbed him most of the time. Take your seat" "I am sorry, sir," Damien said as he took the seat, ignoring Zach's silent taunt. "Just ignore them" Sky mouthed him before turning to face the teacher. Damien felt eyes on him as he tried not to look around in fascination or curiosity as he could sense different emotions from the stares he fell on him. Some are that of derision and disbelief.
