She seems to be disappointed by what he said, but she hope it doesn't show on her face. She trailed after him towards the older-model Jeep parked a few dozen yards away. She couldn't help but admire his taut ass, which looked ridiculously good in those cargo pants of his.

My God! She think she lusted after this man.

Fortunately, he will go away. Dean had opened the driver's door, but he hadn't made a move to get into the Jeep. Instead, he offered an awkward-looking shrug. He had a feeling that this man wasn't even nervous or embarrassed, and she fought herself to smile at him.

"Thank you for giving me your time to interview you, Doc."

"No problem."

"And if, uhm, if I get lost here again, maybe I can come see you..."

He trailed off, making it unclear whether that was a question or a statement.

"Sure, I'd like that." Her only response.

Their gazes collided, and there it was again, the heat and the sizzle of awareness. Her nipples promptly puckered and strained against her white cotton bra, and that spot between her legs throbbed with anticipation.

Jeez. Why did she suddenly feel lust for that man?

She immediately dismissed any thoughts from her brain, and she just focused on Dean, as if she had something to say. Thalia held her breath, and she just waited for the man to speak, but suddenly she couldn't read his face. And she just regretted it when he climbed into the driver's seat.

"Keep up the good work, Doc." He raised his voice so she could hear him over the rumble of the engine.

She swallowed another dose of disappointment. "Have a safe flight," she told him, and raised her hand in a wave.

The Jeep raised a cloud of brown dust as Dean executed a U-turn and sped toward the gravel road that would lead him back to civilization.

"Who is that?"

Thalia turned to Elizabeth Sollano who was now heading in her direction. Liza is a Filipina nurse who is their staff member, and is also her closest staff member.

"He's the journalist I'm telling you about," she said, but her focus was on the Jeep driving away.

"For real, Doc? Too bad I never met that journalist. He's still hot."

She sighed. "Yes."

Liza's jaw dropped. "No way, Dr. Ricafort, who is very shy of a man, and suddenly interested in a man? Are you ill-loved, Doc?"

She rolled her eyes, but she couldn't argue very well. Because what she said was true, it seems that no man has been interested in her since they arrived on the island. She's not like their staff can even get flirt to the men in their vicinity.

She sees attractive men, such as Doc Kelvin and Doc Marc, Nadine's father who is a single dad. But Thalia just isn't the type to be linked with one of her fellow doctors. During her last placement in Africa, she witnessed two colleagues falling in love, until she also witnessed their separation.

Unfortunately, with her coworkers off-limits, she didn't have many other options in terms of romance. Except for that handsome pilot who drops supplies to them every two months, that pilot is fine, as long as he's not among his colleagues.

"I wish you'd just invite him to dinner, Doc." Liza added, and simply put her arms around her. With a height of five-foot-eleven, Liza's appeal is really more appealing than her who is only five-foot-five in height. Their colleagues even joked that she was a monstrous height for a woman, but the truth is, they were all really impressed by Liza's height. She can also see that Liza seems to be a better fit for Dean. Because they are both tall.

Call her selfish, but the truth is she's happy that Dean and Liza didn't get along. Maybe Dean noticed her beauty more than her.

"He's chasing a flight," she said as they entered the building.

"Too bad, Doc. Now is your chance to have a love life."

Thalia burst out laughing. "Why are you so concerned about my love life?"

"Because I don't want to see you always immersed in work. I hope you can allow yourself to have fun."

"I'm happy with my few months here."

She neglected to mention how incredibly not fun the thought of heading home was, but because MD International demanded mandatory breaks between placements, she had no choice but to return to Georgia when her time was up.

The nine-months-on, three-months-off cycle was liable to kill her. She'd joined MDI the second she'd finished her residency, and she'd been with the organization for five years now.

"Anyway," she added as they headed for the small nurse's station past the waiting room, "you can have fun for both of us." She smirked. "That is, if you still have plans to seduce Doc Kelvin?"

"Right," Liza declared, seeing her eyes full of mischief.

"You've had a crush on Doc Kelvin for eight months. It's about time."

"Exactly." Liza pulled her hair tie and let her hair hang loose. "I'll see you later, love. Sandra needs help with her vaccination."

Thalia watched the nurse bounce off in her usual lively fashion. Earlier, when she told Dean that they were like family here, she wasn't really joking about that. Especially Liza who is like her sister. Doc Kelvin is like her big brother. And Doc Marc because he is a single dad, so he sees him as a father figure. Hilda, their midwife, can also be considered the most tender grandmother and never runs out of words of wisdom.

Since both her father and her only sister already died, Thalia is alone in this world. She still has a mother, but they are not really close to each other. Because her mother had another family, and since then they have not spoken to each other again.

"Doc Thalia, I need you here."

She turned to Nasir Patil, poking his head out of an exam room. Along with Thalia, Kelvin and Marc, Nasir was the fourth physician on staff. He is an Arab doctor, and is in-charge of the young patients in Valera.

"Everything is okay?" she called.

"I'm attempting to take a blood sample and our patient is a tad cranky. Perhaps you could lend a hand?"

She heard a loud scream from the exam room, so Thalia immediately realized that Doc Nasir was saying his patient was more than 'tad cranky'.

"Sure thing," she called back.

After ten minutes, she successfully drew blood from the three-year-old child. Afterwards, she went to her patients. She was happy to see some of them no longer showing symptoms of cholera. But she still cannot release them until their blood test results come. But she is confident that there will be no outbreak of this disease.

For the next three hours, she bustled around the clinic, doing everything from stitching up patients to changing bedpans. Her white coat might label her a doctor, but the clinic was so understaffed that the responsibility lines blurred significantly, and Thalia often found herself being not just a doctor, but also a nurse, a surgeon, a janitor, a cook, and a babysitter .So it's not surprising that when eight o'clock in the evening came, she was about to pass out. And because her shift is in the evening, she can't keep up with her colleagues at dinner. During break time, she always eats a can of pork and beans. So with her eating routine, there is no chance that she will gain weight. The MD International lived in heavy canvas tents behind the building. They have four big tents, two for the men, and those two tents are for the women. They also have six small tents for people with special circumstances; such as Nadine, and the others are for their staff who are a couple. She went to the

The irony of the situation did not escape him. All the information they had on the virus had come from a source that could hardly be considered trustworthy. But even though Ortez was responsible for the death of Tatum's brother, Wilson, the former rebel leader insisted that he was not the reason for the death of his compatriots in Catalina. He said they only burned the corpses of the villagers there because their disease was contagious, but Dean still hoped that he would see the evidence of the said disease with his own eyes rather than believe the word of a dead person."Well, it probably isn't something that's found in nature," Pierre was saying, still sounding incredibly irritated. "Doctor Edison headed up the biological weapons department at D&N Initiative, so let's just assume that the virus he nested was actually made."Dean gasped. "Yeah, and it's probably a mutated strain of something, which means it's doubtful

Military vehicles formed a barricade in the middle of the road, and upright floodlights had been set up in various spots to illuminate the area. Soldiers moved around with purpose, their murmured voices wafting into the open window of her pickup truck. She immediately recognized the uniforms of the soldiers belonging to the San Jose military, but other than their blue and gold uniforms, she also saw that there were those wearing...green uniforms? Her eyes widened when she realized that the green uniforms were actually American soldiers. And every one of them is wearing a facemask."What the..." She trailed off, unable to tear her eyes off the confusing chaos up ahead. She saw that it looked like she couldn't continue driving ahead, so she just stepped on the brakes to stop the car. But she just heard loud shouting around. The next thing she knew, five soldiers were swarming her pickup truck like crazed fans surrounding a celebrity's car. They forcefully opened the driver's door, then

Dean watched in growing alarm as more body bags were tossed into the back of the wide-load trucks parked at the entrance of the village. He counted the loaded body bags in the first truck and the number was thirty-five. Forty-five body bags were loaded in the second truck. It looks like those are the villagers. God. It seems that many villagers are dying in Esmeralda. The soldiers in charge of disposal efficiently carried out their task without comment or expression. Dean swallowed a rush of disgust, wondering how they justified it to themselves. Probably assured themselves they were good little soldiers simply following orders, just like the captured Russian soldiers between the war in Russia and Ukraine - they said they were just following the orders of the superior. He was stunned. He then remembered those soldiers in Germany during Hitler's attack on Poland - they just followed orders. Who are they to question the command of the superior, right?Battling his rising fury, Dean crep

Thalia had never been more terrified in her entire life as she followed Dean out of the makeshift escape route. Darkness immediately enveloped them, disorienting her for a moment. She breathed in the night air, a combination of pine and decay, but then she caught a whiff of something else, something...musky. Even though she was afraid in those moments, that masculine scent actually made her heart skip a beat. She just laughed secretly. Oh God, how is this all happening? The back of the tent was perfectly positioned directly in front of the woods, and Thalia stuck to Dean like glue as they crept toward the trees. For some inexplicable reason, she seemed to trust the man immediately. She had every intention of following him blindly and doing anything he asked without question, and that scared her almost as much as everything else that had happened. Her eyes were only focused on Dean, and she noticed how strong his back muscles were with every step he took. She was really focused on the

"Are you really going to ask me that now?" Dean suppressed a groan as Thalia's sharp hazel eyes swept over him, she looked at him up and down, side to side, and she was really examining him like he was an item she was going to buy. He knew that she was confused by his presence, but hopefully they could talk about it later."You're not a journalist, am I right?"He answered her without hesitation. "Not really. And I'm happy to explain it to you, Thalia. Just not now."Fortunately, Thalia understood what he said. "Okay, fine. I'll accept whatever your reason as of now. But..." She let out a shaky breath. "Promise me that I can trust you, Dean."His chest squeezed. Crap. The vulnerability flashing in those big eyes of hers was completely uncharacteristic.Of course, his observation here is ironic because he doesn't really know Thalia very well. And yet he knew without a shred of doubt that revealing fear or insecurities was not something Dr. Ricafort did often."You can trust me," he pro

"Are you sure?" Thalia confirmed."I heard from the soldiers there that Dr. Carter died from the virus.""I see."Her voice had no emotion. She didn't cry either. If he hadn't seen her shoulders shaking, he would have thought that Doc Thalia felt like ice.But after he hesitated to touch her, he managed to squeeze her shoulder gently. "I'm sorry about your friend, Doc."She flinched from his touch, just for a second, before she leaned against his chest again.Silence prevailed between them for a moment until he spoke again. "We'll approach the clinic from the hills. That will give us a bird's-eye view, and if we see anything amiss, we'll get the hell out of here. Deal?"He was not surprised when she protested what he said. "I'm going inside the clinic.""Not unless I first make sure it's safe to enter." His tone brooked no argument. After Bhram left, Dean's full attention was focused on Thalia, whose cheeks were regaining some color. "How are you feeling?" he asked. "Surprisingly good. For me it's a miracle that you got the antidote on your hands."He nodded. "Dr. Lucas stole the antidote vial from D&N, and at the same time he also stole the virus. I went to him and forced him to admit where he kept the antidote."Thalia's lips twitched with humor. "And how did you do that?""I'm very persuasive," he said with a shrug. Just as Thalia was about to touch his cheek, he flinched, so he could see the surprise look in Thalia's eyes. "What's wrong?" she demanded."Nothing's wrong." He kept his tone light. "You're alive. That means everything is fine."She frowned. "Okay.""Alright, I'll tell your doctor first that you're awake."He started to stand up, but Thalia latched her hand on his arm and forced him to stay put. Thalia couldn't answer Dean. But really, who was he trying to kid? He is not a doctor. She was. She knew for herself what exactly happened to his central nervous system at the moment. The virus was attacking it one cell at a time. Soon she'd be nothing but a motionless lump of dead, like the rats in Franco's experiment. Another giggle bubbled in the back of her throat, and soon she was shuddering with laughter because this was all so funny and - nope, she's having a seizure again. God, she was really tired. Those same shrill voices assaulted her ears again. Those same anvils crushed her body. This time she decided to just close her eyes. Maybe she needs more rest. She succeeded in the closing-of-the-eye part because everything went black, but when she heard Dean's husky voice again, she realized that sleeping at that time was a bad idea. Because what if she never woke up? "Go to sleep," he urged. "No," she protested. "But you need to rest.""I do not want."But she couldn't ope

After a long five-minute conversation, Dean came out of the interrogation room and shot Bhram an impatient look. "The antidote is stashed in a locker at his health club. Locker number fifty-nine-seven. Key is on the key ring you confiscated along with his personal belongings. Bhram Davies sucked in a breath, his face awash with shock. "Get me that damn key ring," Dean snapped on his way to the door. "Magallon, wait."He heard Bhram's footsteps behind him but he still didn't stop. "I'll dispatch a team to fetch it. You don't have to do it yourself."He just kept walking. "Damn it, Dean. Stop!"The next thing he knew, Bhram was in front of him, shaking his shoulder. As a wave of rage crashed over him, he shoved the other man away. "Don't touch me," he hissed. "And don't tell me what to do."Bhram got in his path again. "You need to be at the hospital. With Thalia. For chrissake, Dean, she's all alone there."His heart lodged in his throat. "I'll send people to the health club," B

Dean immediately let go of Bhram, and the man nearly fell over before managing to steady himself. With a wave of his hand, Bhram dismissed the guards who were warily monitoring the entire exchange. "Resume your posts, men. Everything is fine here." He turned to Dean. "You know I could have you arrested for this, right?""Five minutes, Bhram. I only need five minutes."Indecision flashed across the other man's face. "I know you're worried about Dr. Ricafort. Hell, I'm worried, too. I don't know how she got infected, but I promise you, the last thing I want is for that woman to die."Dean fought the urge to grab a gun from the hip holster of one of those guards and empty an entire clip into Bhram Davie's chest. The son of a bitch had given him that water, and now here he was, he acted like he had no idea how Thalia got infected with the virus. Acting like he actually cared about her well-being? "Take me to Dr. Lucas," Dean muttered. "Now."Silence prevailed for a few moments before Bh

The next ten minutes were a total whirlwind. Thalia can't remember when she was getting dressed, but somehow she was wearing jeans and a tank top when they stumbled out of the hotel. She doesn't even remember that they got in a car, but somehow she was in the passenger seat while Dean murmured soothing words in her ear and kept a firm hand on her thigh. Her skin was on fire. Blood was still flowing from her nose, she could almost taste the coppery blood in the back of her throat and she almost gagged. As Dean drove, she didn't hear a single word from him. "Maybe...maybe the CDC developed an antidote already," she said to Dean. He sucked in a breath. "An antidote.""Maybe," she murmured again. "Sometimes they can develop one fairly fast."Yeah, right. They got out of the Jacuzzi and dried off, then they got dressed in a pair of complimentary robes instead of getting dressed. They both ended up ordering cheeseburgers and fries, along with the plate of onion rings to share. Probably wasn't smart to eat such a heavy meal at midnight, but they were both hungry, and Dean was happy to see Thalia eat well. She was always full since they were together, which was ironic considering they'd been doing nothing but traveling and hiding out in motel rooms. Still, no matter where they'd been, he'd encouraged the girl to eat right and it was obvious that she had already eaten much because his efforts showed in the rounding of her cheeks. "If you can work on a new foundation again, don't let yourself be overworked."Thalia raised an eyebrow. "Oh, really? Who's going to stop me?""I will." Dean shot her a mocking look. Instead of going back to their motel room, Dean and Thalia checked into a hotel using Dean's fake identity. The only available room ended up being a suite with a huge Jacuzzi tub that brought a delighted grin to Thalia's face. Dean loved seeing her so happy, and she was much cuddlier now than usual. Linking arms when they walked, snuggling close during the car ride, planting a spontaneous and unbelievably passionate kiss on his lips in the hotel elevator. That kiss had succeeded in getting him harder than concrete, but neither of them had been in the mood for sex as they got settled in the suite. They haven't slept in the past twenty-four hours, so that's the reason why they just fell asleep when they got to their hotel room. When Dean's eyes opened a few hours later to find that it was dark beyond the floor-to-ceiling window, and he groaned with unhappiness. Thalia lay next to him, her warm ass wiggling into his groin. "What's wrong?" she asked sleepily."Imagine, we've been slee

An hour later, Dean was on board the chopper after their successful operation. A ground unit was bringing Escalante and the two surviving UFF soldiers for interrogation, while the deadly vials were taken to the basement to be airlifted to the CDC. A search of the house had not turned up any more vials, and according to one of Escalante's men, all the vials in the group's possession had been in the house. That only spoke to the disorganized and highly unprofessional tactics of the UFF sect. Escalante's planning had been shoddy, his security weak, his goals unrealistic. "Very good job," Bhram Davies boomed as he greeted him at the helipad. He slapped Dean's back, and the two men headed for the door leading into the building. The rest of the team stalked past them, Faust barking orders at his men as he wiped the black paint off his face with a cotton rag. Dean did the same, he also wiped the black paint on his face with a cloth. "A joint task force is being organized in San Jose. Ev

"We've got a visual on Apollo. I repeat, visual on Apollo. He appears to be asleep in the back bedroom, west side, clear shot." The hushed report came from the sniper positioned on the roof of the house bordering the terrorist nest. "Roger that. Maintain visual." Faust's voice, in that same monotone murmur, echoed in Dean's earpiece. "Visual on two tangos in the back bedroom, east side," the operative covering the side of the house whispered. "Andromeda One and Two. No movement.""Andromeda Three, Four and Five in the kitchen. Visual on back door," came another whisper. "Awake but no movement."From his position in the hedges separating the UFF nest from the neighboring home, Dean fixed his gaze on the front of the house. The light was on in the living room, and he saw someone lying on the sofa, a man watching television. The bluish light from the TV screen reflected off the glass of the large front window. "Tango in the living room. Awake but no movement," Dean murmured. "That mak
