Mason exited the hospital in despair; the last couple of hours had taken a toll on him. He was consumed with thoughts. The pain of betrayal still lay in his heart. He tried not to think about it and focused his energy on raising the money for Helen's treatments.
Dismissing the idea of going home, Mason wandered the street to look for jobs to raise money. After numerous rejections, he found a night job with extra shifts that ran through the night till the next day. Though the pay was small, it was an encouraging start for Mason. The next day, it was 10 am. Mason exited the restaurant kitchen; he was done with the dishes and cleaning the entire kitchen, which was busy the previous night due to the large number of customers patronizing the local restaurants. He sat on the chair outside the manager's office, waiting for her arrival. "Good morning," Mason greeted the Lady who had entered the hallway. She reciprocated his greeting with a nod before opening the door to her office. "You can come in," the woman said, leaving the door ajar. Mason follows her into her office, taking the chair opposite her. She handed Mason an envelope containing his pay for last night. Mason's pay was 100 dollars for the night, but the envelope contained 2000 dollars. Mason raised his gaze to the Lady who was typing at her computer. "Is there a problem?" She asked, noticing his gaze. "No, ma'am, you were supposed to give me 100 dollars for working, but instead, the envelope contains 2000 dollars," Mason replied, and the Lady responded with a nod. "Consider it as a bonus for doing a perfect job," the Lady said, glancing at Mason's expression. "It's hard to see an older brother that would sacrifice everything for his sister." Mason didn't believe his ear. He stared at the Lady in surprise; he stared at the envelope. "T…Thank you very much, ma'am," Mason bowed, tears pricking the corner of his eyes. Her deed touched him. It was rare to see a boss who would give his employees that huge amount of bonus for their first day. "I will continue to do my job very well," Mason bowed again. "Of course you will," the Lady smiled. Mason bowed again before exiting the building. Though Mason was exhausted, his smile was still visible. He hailed a taxi and went home. When Mason got to his apartment, he freshened up and had a change of clothes. Though his body and eyes yawned for sleep, he couldn't bring himself to do so on the same bed where Natalia had cheated on him, as the pain was still fresh in his heart. Painfully, Mason shook off the thought. He retrieved his bag where he kept his salary and went downstairs. He sat on the couch and emptied the bag to retrieve the envelope, which contained 500 dollars, his salary from Skyhigh Hotel. "It was right here," Mason muttered with a frown when he couldn't find the envelope. He opened the other zipper, but then it was gone. Mason's body heated with fear, making him sweat. He had left the money in his bag last night. The thought of who could have gone through his bag hit him. Natalia was the only person he had suspected to go through his things since it wasn't the first time she had done it. Uncertainty and anger surge through Mason. The thought of Natalia betraying him and stealing his money made his blood run cold, so Mason decided to go to the only place he was sure he could find her. It was a fifteen-minute drive to Aleric University. The campus atmosphere was warm and filled with students excited for the new semester and reuniting with colleagues, but Mason didn't feel that way, and all he felt was rage. Mason arrived at the classroom, occupied by a few early students, including Natalia Hallow, who was chatting with her friends at the back of the classroom. Natalia saw Mason from a distance and averted her gaze, pretending not to notice him. "We need to talk, Natalia," Mason said, stopping in front of her desk. Her friends turned to stare at Mason, not hiding their stunned expression. Natalia frowned at Mason, rolling her eyes. "I have nothing to say to you," she hissed, adjusting in her seat. The eyes around her glance at the two of them "Why does Mason Williams want to talk to you, Natalia?" May, one of Natalia's friends, asked, puzzled at her. "Did you send him on an errand so he could beg for little money?" Though Mason was poor, he had never once asked his classmate for financial assistance. He knew how easy it was for them to ridicule just like May was doing. "I wasn't talking to you, so shut your mouth!" Mason deadpan. May, who was taken aback by Mason's reply, was quick to overcome her shock. "Then what business do you have with someone like him," she asked Natalia, sizing Mason with her eyes before returning it to her friend. Mason glanced at the girl who was wearing long lashes, and for a moment, he thought if she had blinked faster, she might have levitated from the ground. "Are you friends with him?" another girl who Mason didn't know asked. "We need to talk now!" Mason's words were harsh, making Natalia frown at his demand. "With that tone of yours, I have nothing to discuss with you," Natalia hissed, irritated by Mason's presence. Mason's patience was running out. "Give me back the stuff you took from my bag, Natalia," he growled, his patience getting thinner. Staring at her, he didn't see the woman he had once loved, but all he could see was a woman who betrayed him when a rich man approached her. "What money?" Natalia puzzled at Mason. She kept a straight face even when she was lying, which only made Mason's blood run cold. "I never said money, but you know it was money because you took it!" Mason replied, confirming his suspicion. "Are you out of your mind or something!" Natalia spat, pretending to be pissed. "Are you calling me a thief?" The presence of Mason arguing with one of the prettiest girls in school was already drawing more attention as passersby stopped to glimpse what was happening. "Isn't that Mason Williams? The poor boy who works at Skyhigh Hotel as a cleaner, Why is he yelling at Natalia?" the group who joined the gathering whispered. "I heard from Lola that he got fired for his inability to do his job. Maybe he's still worked up about it," one of them said. Mason wanted to turn and glance at the person who said that, but he stopped himself as his priority was to retrieve his money and leave. "What is going on here?" a familiar voice speaks, and Mason turns to see Jacob Higs behind him, deepening his frown."Why are you harassing my girlfriend?" Asked Jacob, holding Mason's gaze.Natalia's face beams the moment she sees Jacob. She turns to Mason with irritation. "Babe, can you believe this lowlife is accusing me of stealing his money!"Jacob scoffs, staring at Mason. "Have you lost it, Mason, or is this the aftermath of your poverty?" His eyes were sharp as those words flew out of his mouth.Mason ignored his insult, as the only one that hurt was Helen's. "All I want is the money this cheater took from my bag," Mason replied, turning to Helen. "Did you hear that? Mason just called Natalia Hallow a cheater. What's going on? Were they dating?" a curious voice murmured from the crowd. "How can you say that? Helen would never date someone as poor as him," May, who was beside her friend, retorted at the statement. "Give me back my money, Natalia!" Mason yelled, causing Helen to shiver at his sudden outburst.Jacob, who saw this, pretended to be shocked when he heard Mason's words. He burst
Mason opened his eyes and was surrounded by immersive bright light. It Took him time before his eyes could adjust to the intensity of his environment. 'Am I dead? Is this heaven?" Mason muttered to himself, constantly turning his head, bewildered by the presence of nothing. The light surrounding him was the same above and below him. It was as if he was floating in the absence of gravity. "No, stupid, you are not dead yet," a voice echoed. "And this is definitely not heaven." The voice added. Mason spun in fear, searching for the person who spoke to him, but no one was around. The reverberation of the voice made it difficult to locate its direction. "Is that you, God?" Mason asked, swallowing hard. It was the only thought that came into his mind. "No stupid, down here," the voice said, and Mason looked down at who said those words. There was a tiny emoji with a puzzled look staring at Mason. "What the!" Mason was taken aback. "You're not God; you are an emoji!" Mason muttered.
Inside the hospital, one of the nurses who attended to Mason yesterday approached him, her worried eyes panned at his body. "Mr. Williams, are you alright?" she asked, looking at the bloodstained on Mason's clothes and the dark circles underneath his eyes. "I'm fine," Mason replied, glancing at his body. "Though his wounds were almost healed, he couldn't deny the little sting he still felt. "Are you sure you don't want to get that check?" She asked, hoping Mason would change his mind, but Mason shook his head. "How's my sister?" he asked, changing the topic, and the nurse's eyes immediately lit up at his question. "Good news," she said with a smile. "We have been trying to contact you hours ago to inform you that Helen was awake but couldn't get hold of you." the nurse replied, and Mason's eyes widened, remembering he misplaced his cellphone during his accident. "She's awake?" he asked with a clouded eyes. The nurse nodded with a smile. "Right now, she's sleeping without needi
Mason entered the South Aleric Bank. It was one of the prestigious banks in Aleric City. He joined the queue, which was moving fast considering the large number of workers available at the bank, and Mason patiently waited his turn. The curious eyes that passed glanced at him, some minding their business while others did otherwise, but Mason wasn't bothered by it as the only thing that concerned him was a confirmation from the bank that he wasn't going crazy. After some minutes, it was his turn, and he walked to the Lady behind the transparent counter. "Good afternoon, sir. How may I help you?" the fair, slender Lady greeted with a warm smile, adjusting her glasses before returning to her computer. "Good afternoon. I'm here to collect my ATM card," Mason responded. The queue behind Mason was murmuring, and Mason knew they were gossiping about him, but he paid them no attention. "Oh my, since when do security allow such people into the bank!" a woman scoffed in her friend's ear, but M
"Nothing, it's just that we didn't expect SAB's biggest VIP client to come around today. Mrs.Anna replied with a shocked expression. "Biggest VIP client?" Mason asked, confused. Mrs.Anna nodded in response. "Your account is worth five hundred billion dollars," she said, and in an instant, cold sweat broke down Mason's forehead.Five hundred billion Dollars! "Are you serious?" Mason asked, blinking his eyes in disbelief. "Yes sir," Mrs.Anna replied. "These are the figures on my screen."Emoji words were valid, and he wasn't crazy after all, and if he had five hundred billion dollars in his account, that meant he was a billionaire; the thought mentally slapped his face. "I still can't believe you doubted me," Emoji said, reappearing beside him. "You have trust issues." "How could I not!" Mason responded with his leg suddenly feeling jelly. It was taking everything he had not to scream in joy. "Did you say something, sir?" Mrs.Anna asked, and Mason raised his
Mason couldn't take his eyes off the figure in front of him. "How is this possible?" Mason asked, confusion visible on his face. If he had a twin, he would know it wasn't something a parent would keep from his children. At first, he wouldn't believe the possibility of it as his mother, who he thought was dead, was also alive and today seems to be making the impossible possible. "We can discuss it in my office," she replied, leading the way. Mason followed her into the exotic office in the bank, which seemed to be owned by the chairman, and with her name crested on the door, he assumed she was the chairman. Mason tilted his head to meet her blue eyes, clouded with tears. "I'm sorry, but can I hug you?" she asked, already holding her hands, hoping he wouldn't decline. Mason nodded his head in response and took her into his embrace. After a few seconds, she pulled, wiping the tears from her eyes. "When Mum told me we looked the same, I couldn't believe it at first," she smile
Mason got to Helen's room; his mother, Grace Williams, sat beside her daughter. She held Helen's sleeping hands and gently stroked her hair as she whispered a familiar lullaby. Mason noticed the hurt laced in her voice as it reverberated in his head. Many questions he needed to answer kept running through his mind, questions like: why did his parents keep his twin sister a secret from him, and who were the people that brought pain to his precious family?Mason felt his leg rooted to the ground as he stared at her. His body was tense, and Haley, behind him, gently squeezed his shoulder, assuring him everything would be okay. "Mom," Mason finally called, moving from the threshold. His mother tilted her head, and her worried gaze instantly turned into a sad expression. She quickly got up from her chair and hugged Mason tightly. "Oh, my baby," she sobbed, bringing tears to Mason's eyes. "I'm sorry I left," Mason said, wrapping his hand around her. "No, Mas, don't be. I should be apo
Deep into the south of Aleric city was the Williams Private District, which rested upon twenty hectares of land. The beautiful scenery of nature, which spread through the landscape along with the rivers flowing through the horizon, would make one mouth water in awe. It was a paradise, admits Aleric City, and Once every year, the exterior part of the WPD and its private museum would be open to one selected university amongst the rest to bring in their students and explore the wonders that lay within these walls. It was an opportunity one would kill for.Mason's eyes stared through the windshield of the moving car. His eyes gazed at the wonders that lay ahead. He couldn't believe this was where he and his family would stay and call home. Grace smiled, noticing the astonishment that rested on his face, and that alone brought her satisfaction. "It's nice, right?" she asked, staring outside the windshield. "Nice?! It is amazing!!" Mason replied, switching his gaze from his mother t
