In the center of Cyprus was a vast, rocky landscape. Isolated from the rest of the country by water on all sides, an ancient, primitive forest could be seen encircling a tall blue-gray mountain that stretched into the clouds.

Bellowing mist swirled around the mountain, and shrouded the numerous trees and wild vegetation in a mystical haze. A few miles from the forest stood a stone mansion half as tall as the mountain. Obstructed outside the mansion, hordes of zombies banged on a towering steel gate, their animalistic growls filling the air.

On the other side of the gate, a few inches from the zombie horde, severed arms and legs were strewn about.

This was Sapphire Island.

"Brother, what do we do now? Our trick only managed to draw some of the zombies away. What should we do with the remaining horde?" A weak voice with the high pitch of a young female sounded a small distance from the steel gate.

"If we must, we'll sacrifice another. But we will not die here." A deep male voice wit

"Brother?" Noting her brother's absentmindedness, Naomi frowned disgruntledly. She was starving to the point where she could feel her stomach attach to her back, and yet, he was spacing out? Didn't he care about her at all? Having never endured any difficulties before, the girl felt neglected by her brother's attitude. Kaiden snapped back to his senses and rubbed his sister's head with a melancholic smile. "Naomi, be good. Brother will get you something to eat soon, okay?" He cajoled. "Soon. Just how soon? You've been saying you'll get me something to eat since yesterday. But how do you hope to accomplish that with those creatures beneath us?" He said he would draw the remaining zombies away, but Naomi couldn't wait that long. She was hungry, so hungry she could...she could eat anything! Her eyes swiveled to the chunks of meat inside the gate, and she inadvertently rubbed her empty stomach. She knew they were human arms and thighs, but that didn't stop her from imagining barbe

Heart sinking to the bottom of his stomach, Brad warily crawled to his knees and studied this new foe through hooded eyes. A female clad in black with knee-length black hair, and the cleanest complexion he had ever seen, led the group. Beautiful. That was the first word that entered his mind when he saw her picturesque features. He was illiterate and his vocabulary limited. But even if he was educated, he was certain he wouldn't have found a more perfect word to accurately convey the beauty of the woman before him. She looked delicate, but her steps carried graceful majesty. Her waist was so slender he felt he could cover it with one hand. But years of experience told him she was no easy picking. One look in her violet orbs, and his courage wilted as easily as a flower caught in a blaze. 'No. She is no easy picking.' Brad decided to tread with caution. "Marcus, Celio, anchor the boats and make sure you hide them in a place where no one can find them." Ella paused and sent a few

  • Maddening Storm   Separation

With ugly expressions and disgusted scowls, one by one, the group of women slowly pushed to their feet and stood behind Kiera in an unmistakably supportive manner. Ella's frown deepened at the sight. It didn't take a genius to figure out what was going on. The group of women weren't taken with the man by her side. Heh. How hilarious! Did they think this was still the same world? People were turning into flesh-eating monsters, while the government packed their weapons and vehicles and went into hiding with a select few. Rapists, murderers, drug dealers, human traffickers...in this world where there was no law and order, any male or woman walking on the street could become one of them. Unfortunately, this group of people had yet to digest the true reality of their situation and accept the collapse of the world they knew. In Ella's eyes, their rigid mindset and intense reaction were amusing, to say the least. But more than that, it was alarming. Such a group of fools...if she cont

There were some matters in life that took a lifetime to comprehend. Others took only a glance to understand. For Charlie, Ella was a mystery he couldn't see through. His lighting superpower gave him the ability to see auras. People who were vile and sinister, like Kuram and Stacy, had a cloak of gray fog hovering over their heads. Some, like Kiera, had a mixture of white and gray fog, which he believed to be neutral, neither good nor bad. As for Ella...she was an anomaly. No fog to show whether she was a good or bad person, making it difficult for him to decide what kind of person she was. But it was this inability to see through that made him want to stick around her. "Cha...Charlie...what the hell are you saying? You want to stay with her? I never knew you were the ungrateful type!" Kiera hissed, nostrils flaring as orange sparks flickered on her hands. Whether it was from rage or embarrassment, Charlie didn't know. And truthfully? He didn't care. "Who's ungrateful? Kiera, if

Dust and splinters blasted her face. Her commanding cry had yet to fade when a blood-curdling screech reminiscent of an evil spirit's shrill wail reverberated in the blinding darkness. Kiera slashed and hacked, scorched and burnt every tendril and vine that neared her body. Her green orbs glowed with a crazed frenzy as the shrill wail grew closer and closer to her back. The ominous, bloodthirsty aura suffocated her. It pressed on her chest and made her limbs as heavy as if she was fighting against the pressure of a giant mountain. As her speed decreased, her steps faltered, and her mind became sluggish. Beads of sweat gathered on her forehead, and her chin trembled inadvertently. Kiera felt bone-deep fear. All around her were withered corpses, torn and shredded limbs. Half of her companions were dead. The other half, with the aid of their men, had fled to who knew where. There was something lurking in the shadows, stalking and preying on her and her people. Bloodthirsty and filled

"Compared to those pack of wolves, I'm merely a small fry." Brad smiled bitterly. Ella shot another zombie in the head and glanced at the convict. "If you're considered a small fry, I don't want to find out what those wolves are capable of." She sniggered. "Seriously, I'm not joking or saying this to scare you. If you ever encounter one of those convicts, either shoot them in the head or steer clear of their sight. They are the real deal." Brad reiterated with a grave expression. As a man who sold drugs for a living, he knew he was a bad guy headed for hell. But compared to the cold-blooded and savage criminals held on this island, he would be considered an angel. And maybe it was because he hadn't blackened to the core that he didn't want such a kind and beautiful woman to encounter those beasts. Ella felt amused. For a criminal, Brad was quite a softy. "Alright, I understand. I'll avoid the convicts like a plague." She relented. It's been more than a few hours since Kiera and

She rasped breathlessly, overlooking the strange expression on Kaiden's face. Naomi yanked her brother's arm and hopped back on his back, pointing in the direction of the humans with the severed human arm. "Hurry! Run in that direction!" She panted. Since they were in such a miserable situation, how could she allow other people to be better off? She was the daughter of the Miller Family, worth a hundred billion more than the cheap, poor maggots. It was their honor to be her bait! Naomi's eyes turned cold. A bloodshot smear tainted her chocolate brown orbs, making her features dark and malevolent. She refused to die. She would use anyone and anything to secure her life. And if that failed, she would drag everyone down with her! "Brother, go!" She panted again, this time with an imperceptible growl. Her urgent cry shattered Kaiden's trance, and his senses flooded back to him in a dizzying rush. His sister...ate a human flesh. Color drained from his face. Kaiden gritted his teet

Oppressive pressure rippled from her body in undulating waves. It pressed on their chests and made it difficult for them to breathe. Subconsciously drawing back, the four males and the female watched their companion with complicated expressions on their faces. They were all the same, ordinary humans who evolved in the storm of the apocalypse. But why did it feel as if the woman hovering in the air was different from them? She, like them, awakened with a superpower when the meteor descended. Their strength and growth should've been on the same wavelength, but facts and circumstances proved otherwise. Celio gritted his teeth, his fists clenched so tight that his nails pierced through the flesh of his palms. His eyes exuded frost, so cold they seemed to be carved from ice. Why was this happening? It was clearly different from his previous life! After surviving 5 years in a world without laws, the betrayal of his close friend ended up causing his death. Ever since he regained the me

Irene gasped and sunk to her knees, with tears streaming down her face. "Ella, you're finally here. Marcus...he..." "I know. I used a sedative to calm him down." Ella whispered and held out her hand to pull the woman back to her feet. She found them when the beast was scaling the trees. But she remained in the shadows and watched them fall into desperation. To gain the full loyalty of the regular humans, Ella even manipulated the mutated plants to attack them until they lost hope, before making an appearance. Her methods might be vile, and her schemes sinister. But to imprint a powerful image of herself in the hearts of her future followers, she would've even led mutated animals to encircle them before coming to their rescue. What Ella wanted was to recruit people who would never betray her in the face of personal gain or preservation. And to do that in this crumbling world, she needed to instill both gratitude and fear in the hearts of the weaker humans, which could've only been p

"We take action on three!" Brad hollered, ignoring the strange tension between them.He didn't care what relationship the two had with the beast. As long as they didn't jeopardize his life, he was more than happy to let them keep their little secret. As far as he was concerned, they were only partners until they reached open land and went their separate ways. After all, the woman he wanted to follow was no longer around, so why would he stick around to face unnecessary trouble?"One!" He got into his battle stance, a low crouch with his knife gripped backward as if he were about to slash someone's neck, and beckoned to the woman with his eyes.Thankfully, she got his message and didn't create a fuss. Walking to the other side of her friend, she held out her hands, palm up, and frost crackled on their surface."Two!""Three!" At his cry, the wood seemed to groan to live. "Grrrrr!" Larger than an ordinary wolf, their friend-turned-beast leaped from branch to branch, stalking them with glowing hungry eyes. The lack of recognition in its yellow pupils placed them on edge. "What do we do?" Irene whispered. "If he attacks, we defend until we have no choice but to...kill." Celio spat decisively. "But..." "What? Do you think you can reach him in that state? Look at him, Irene. He's a beast!" As much as it hurt to admit it, Celio knew they wouldn't be seeing Marcus again. If he was like the werewolves in supernatural stories, then there might've been a chance to talk to him and get out of this situation without any bloodshed. However, this beast wasn't like the creature in those tales. The instant it changed, there was only bloodlust, and violence in its eyes. It turned on them, and chased them all the way to this point. While he was lost in thought, the beast flashed to the other side of their barrier. Issuing a deafening snarl, he lunged at the hudd

"Footprints? They must be close..." Ella narrowed her eyes and looked around. The wood was dark. Too dark to make out anything beyond ten feet. After reaching level 4, her five senses became sharper. Even then, she had difficulty navigating through this wood. The eerie ambience added a sinister vibe to the place, making her unable to relax. "Da*n it! If I knew this place would be so perverse, I would've never come out to search for them." She couldn't even travel on Radiance due to how difficult it was to see from above. Cursing under her breath, she checked her guns, making sure they were fully loaded, before following the tracks. The further she entered the woods, the colder it became. Controlling her crimson-gold flame, Ella encased it around her body in a dome-like shield for warmth and precaution against sudden attacks. Fearful whimpers, enraged snarls, and hungry growls rang out from multiple directions. Ella sneered and kept walking. After mutation, some plants with early i

Jax swallowed and absentmindedly stared at the sprawling trees. He couldn't understand why they were still stuck. Considering how long they've been wandering, they should've already made it to the other side by now. Did they take the wrong direction, or... A chill slithered down his spine. If they were going around in circles...under a mutated plant's manipulation...then Marcus wouldn't need to take his life. They would all be a goner. "Keep moving." Suppressing his fear, he led the remaining regular humans, as moving forward was their only chance to survive. For the umpteenth time, Marcus contemplated slaughtering them. They were no help. Their fruits ran out, and the noise they created was enough to attract a horde. Combined with the fact they weren't even certain of the direction to the stone mansion, they became nothing but a troublesome burden. Kill. Killing them will make everything easier. Killing them will... No. I can't kill indiscriminately. They're worthless, but th

BOOK 2: The Superhuman Queen Chapter 1: Building A Fortress "Haha! That's payback!" Ella chuckled gleefully at the sound of the angry zombie's roar. Their last exchange severely affected her mental balance, to the point where she turned into a hermit. Other than going out to smash zombies and crash mutated plants and animals, she hadn't left her spatial space in a quest to reach level 4. Thankfully, she didn't need to find a healer for Radiance because of the spring water's healing ability. Her crane's mangled wing healed and became sturdier than before after a little splash with the water. "Now that I have a Lighting Manifestation Orb, I just need to consolidate my foundation. After a week, I'll consume the orb and aim to step into the fifth power level and awaken a lighting ability!" With this thought, Ella guided the crane back to the Stone Mansion. Swooping down in the front yard, she didn't wait for Radiance to land, before she hopped off her back and skipped into the mansion

Roaring thunder crackled and boomed, rippling across the crimson sky of Sapphire Island, bouncing from misty mountain to dense trees. "Radiance, fly faster!" Ella excitedly rubbed the crane's back. The murky clouds roiled as a flash of lighting seared the sky and painted her face in an eerie flare. "Kweee!" The white crane crooned and flapped her wings, kicking up gusts of wind blades and whirlpools of scarlet rain in the sudden downpour. This was the first rain after the descent of the meteor. Due to its blood-like hue and its mystical quality survivors of the zombie virus would later label it Armageddon Rain. As a manifestation of a union between a lighting ability superhuman and a level 4 zombie, the scarlet rain would raise all level 1 zombies to 2, and level 2 zombies to level 3. 'I don't know if it's Charlie, but even if it's not, it doesn't matter.' She only needed to find the location of the superhuman and level 4 zombie's union before anyone else. As a level 4 superhum

  • Naomi Miller

She had been wandering the woods ever since she escaped, lurking and preying on the frail creatures to sate her thirst. The thirst. It was insatiable. Always there, scorching her heart and setting her throat on fire. The crimson liquid would douse it for a while. But only a short while, and that too, when she was feasting. Then the moment she ran out, it would return with greater fury. Her heart no longer beat, and she no longer felt tired. She would walk for days and hunt for nights without experiencing the slightest discomfort. All would've been fine and well if it wasn't for the nagging urge to eat, eat, and eat. She knew her name. Naomi Miller. She knew she had a brother. Kaiden Miller. He loved her and spoiled her, giving her whatever she wanted without hesitation. She knew he was probably worried. Maybe even shocked silly by her transformation. She should go to him and ease his worries. She knew she should, but for all that was flesh and blood, she couldn't bring hersel

"Roar!" Right at this moment, a ferocious growl split through the air. Irene and Celio leaped to their feet and stood back to back, while Marcus and Brad got into a fighting stance. Charlie merely narrowed his eyes and didn't move. Sparks of lighting danced across his fingers, shrouding his features in a ghostly light. "What...what was that? A zombie or...mutated creature?" Jax stammered. "We'll know soon enough, won't we?" Brad nonchalantly smirked. Though he didn't awaken a superpower, his aura wasn't any weaker than his four friends. Jax wondered how the man managed to stay calm and confident in such circumstances, when he was just as powerless as him. The roars grew stronger, and as it drew near, the ground began to shake. Irene created a protective shield around her friends, while Celio focused on stabilizing everyone's balance. By now, the humans were frozen stiff and as pale as a corpse with fright. "Is it...Naomi Miller?" One whispered. "I don't think so. If it was, sh
