The class spanned for four hours, at the end of which the professor dismissed them. Rael returned to his room, left with nothing else to do, carrying a batch of tonics with him while returning.
The professor had given each student ten bottles to continue practicing for the night, asking them to assemble first thing in the morning the next day. Based on the progress, it seemed he needed almost a month to complete the course.
But, that would mean he would run out of Credits. So, Rael wished to apply for other courses as well. Unfortunately, they were all part of the next step after the basics. So, unless he completed the basics, he would just be wasting his time there.
So, he didn’t take any impulsive choices, returning to his room before sitting on his bed, ‘I should continue training my Flux.’
The Flux was how a soldier varied the Plasma’s temperature, moved it around their bodies, condensed them into various shapes, etc. So, it was of paramount importance if he wished to become a strong soldier.
After training for an hour, he headed out to have dinner, crying in response as he paid one Credit for the food. It was just a basic dinner without anything fancy or nourishing, enough to satiate his hunger. If he wished to have anything with greater nutritional benefit, he would have to spend more Credits.
And in his present state, that wasn’t possible, especially since he was neck and deep in Credit consumption. ‘I think they have purposefully given 100 Credits so that it’s only enough for us to last long enough to complete the basic course. And beyond that, we’ll have to strive hard to amass more Credits.’
Sighing, he was just about to return to his room when he noticed roars from a crowd. Curious, he proceeded in the direction of the sound to see a group of people huddled before a massive theatre-sized screen, cheering as two people fought in it.
“The Frost Queen will win!” A student roared, cheering whenever the figure he supported gained an advantage.
Rael gazed at the screen, noticing a woman wearing a simple pair of blue clothes, sporting a mask that covered her face. It was green in colour, sporting golden antlers, giving her a strange vibe.
Her eyes were cold as anything she touched turned into ice.
“As if, there’s a limit to how quickly you can freeze something, unlike heating it. Heat Transfer is a major topic of thermodynamics for a reason.” A student suddenly rebutted the previous student’s cheers, “Your Frost Queen has been wasting a lot of Plasma from the start. In contrast, Flame Bull has barely expended any. He’s just biding time for her to run dry.”
Rael then focused on the Frost Queen’s opponent, seeing a bulky man wearing tattered clothes, sporting a mask that looked like a bull’s face. Unbeknownst to his bulky frame, he had condensed a Plasma Whip, lashing out at his opponent.
Anything that came into contact with the Plasma Whip caught fire, melting quickly, displaying the extent of heat condensed within it.
In response, the ice cast by the Frost Queen didn’t seem as menacing, beginning to melt under the heat as more and more of their surroundings caught fire. With plenty of inflammable fuel around them, she was indeed at a disadvantage.
There were pulses of fire around the two people as their figures flickered all over the place, causing a lot of damage. Suddenly, the Flame Bull’s Plasma Whip coiled around the Frost Queen’s left arm, tightening around as he yanked with all his strength, severing her arm.
“Why did he do that?” Rael stuttered in shock.
“You must be new here.” A student nearby laughed, explaining, “What we are seeing isn’t real. Those two are battling in VR.”
“VR?” Rael’s eyes widened in surprise, “You mean to say, this isn’t real.”
“Of course,” The student laughed, “Our Virtual Reality technology has reached a high enough level to completely scan our bodies and replicate it digitally that we can control. This is a great boon to us, since we can accumulate battle experience without injuring ourselves in reality.”
“Though,” He laughed, “To keep it realistic, everything is kept at a hundred percent realisation. So, if you are injured there, it’ll be as painful as being injured in real life. Most cannot overcome the trauma of dying in VR.”
“Then, how can they still fight like this?” Rael asked, “Isn’t that dangerous mentally?”
“You don’t have to worry about that.” The student laughed, “There is a team of doctors responsible for treating any trauma or mental injury you sustain. Even those suffering from the trauma of death in VR are fully treated in a month. And this is for F Rank Soldiers. E Rank Soldiers are more resilient than us and have a stronger mind.”
“Hah!” Suddenly, the Frost Queen shouted after losing her left arm, condensing a Plasma Spear that she thrust into the Flame Bull, enveloping his body in flames. The flames were cold, beginning to freeze his body.
In response, the Flame Bull roared, emitting a torrent of heat from his body, causing the Frost Queen’s body to melt in response.
A few seconds later, the fight came to a standstill as the Frost Queen dropped to the ground, dead. Immediately after, the Flame Bull slumped, gasping for breath, noticing a massive hole in his chest as a dense layer of frost began to form on his body. He was unable to move for the time being.
Gazing at the charred corpse before him, he muttered, “I’ve barely managed to win this time. Your accumulation in the negative degrees has improved once again.”
The sign of the match ending appeared, showing the Flame Bull as the victor. Half of the crowd cheered in response while the other half threw out mocking remarks, leaving while uttering words that their Frost Queen would win the next time.
“Is there a rivalry between the two?” Rael asked the student that had been calmly explaining to him all along.
“Of course,” The student nodded, “The Frost Queen and the Flame Bull are among the top 10 strongest in the D-Rank of our academy. There is fierce competition for the ranks since the rewards are lucrative. You’ll get 2000 Credits every month just for being in that rank, not to mention other facilities that you can use for free.”
“Those 2000 Credits are just icing on the cake, something that they won’t be using unless they wish to purchase Plasma Skills. The rest of the rewards are even better. And the higher your rank, the greater the rewards.” He said before asking, “Have you completed your basic course?”
“No, I just started today,” Rael replied.
“Then, just focus on it wholeheartedly. Don’t try anything else until you complete it.” The student said, “After that, you too can enter Arena and try your hand at the F-Rank rankings. As long as you gain a good rank, and maintain it, you’ll get rewards every month. So, it’s a great way to passively accumulate Credits.”
“Thank you for the information.” Rael thanked the student.
“No worries, man. If we ever meet on the battlefield, aid me.” Smiling in response, the student waved his hand and casually walked away.
“So cool.” He muttered unconsciously, smiling wryly as he returned to his room and began to train wholeheartedly. The fight between Frost Queen and Flame Bull allowed him to gain a better grasp of the means to use Plasma.
A simple manifestation of Plasma was in a fire. Followed by it were within lightning strikes in nature or the tube lights used by humanity. Even in its raw form, Plasma was destructive. But, when it was controlled, the might it unleashed was on another level.
“It’s not to mention the fact that Plasma’s temperature can be controlled, raising it to thousands of degrees in Celsius or even in the negatives.” He muttered, “Though, I don’t think an F-Rank soldier can achieve such prowess.”
He clenched his hand into a fist, anticipating the day when he would attain such might, “Mom, dad, just you wait. I’ll avenge you.”
He then slapped his cheeks, dissipating his rage, slowly calming himself down before continuing to train. “I only have two units of Plasma now. I neither know the method to increase them nor the means to vary their temperature…”
As he continued to list them out, he realised that he didn’t know much about them, asking his System, “System, how do I raise my Plasma?”
[There are ways to do that. You’ll learn about it in your upcoming classes]
“Fine…” He muttered in disappointment before saying, “I want to get my Quest rewards now.”
[The process would take three hours]
“Alright,” Just as he nodded, his face convulsed as Rael felt like he was sitting in a massage chair as his muscles were slowly being pressed.
An intense vibration was added to the sensation as he felt an external force pressing down on his muscles while a similar force did the same from the inside.
It was an uncomfortable situation, mildly painful as he flinched from time to time, suddenly focusing as he closed his eyes, sensing his body emitting Flux now.
And, it was way denser as compared to what he had emitted in class before. And, the Flux was actuating his Plasma, causing it to wildly circulate in his body as it dispersed, moving through him as his body heated up a little.
It was like a typhoon was forming in him as the sensation of heat moved from one area to another in his body. “What…is happening?”
[This is how the stats of all soldiers are raised. You’ll learn some basic methods for the same in your classes.]
“So, the Flux is necessary to amplify my stats too.” He muttered, still unclear as to how Plasma was capable of strengthening his body. But, it wasn’t like he was even aware of the basics yet, chiding himself to not grow impatient.
Three hours passed in such a fashion as Rael observed the way in which his Flux actuated his Plasma, obtaining a lot of insight into the process. As he wasn’t the one doing it, his mind was fresh.
And, as it was happening in his body, he was accumulating experience in the process. Finally, three hours were up as Rael got up, panting in the process as he gazed at the mirror, ‘Appraise.’
[Name: Rael Rukh]
[Origin: Wrister City (Planet: Strombus Nebula)]
[Age: 15 Union Years]
[Race: Human]
[Might: 7]
[Toughness: 5]
[Mobility: 8]
[Endurance: 7]
[Plasma: 2]
[Rank: F]
His mobility had increased by one while his endurance had increased by two. Rael was able to feel the difference, noticing that he would be able to run a bit more than before, faster. “This is awesome!”
“System, give me more Quests.”
[Only when the conditions are apt would a Quest be generated]
“And, what are those conditions?” He asked in response, only to be met with silence. Sighing, he took a seat, “Fine, I won’t ask.”
He then drank a bottle of tonic and began to meditate, focusing on his Flux as he moved his Plasma, immediately noticing the difference. As compared to before, he was able to move the Plasma faster with less effort.
Thanks to the System’s actions, he gained ample experience, now able to use it to his advantage. Excited, he continued to train, drinking the tonic from time to time whenever he felt tired.
As it revitalised him, he ignored sleep, continuing to train nonstop throughout the night, noticing that he was grasping the process better and better, also able to move the Plasma faster.
The morning of the next day, Rael regretted his actions. After all, once he had run out of tonic to sustain himself, exhaustion set in, making him wish to kick back into the bed and fall asleep immediately.
But, he couldn’t do so, for the professor had already told everyone to assemble. He didn’t wish to get a lower score due to absence, quickly reaching the class early.
He took the same seat as before, closing his eyes as he continued to meditate, increasing the range his Flux enveloped, sensing the Flux of the students whenever they moved in range, observing the quantity of their Plasma this way.
‘So, I don’t need to rely on the System for every single thing.’ He nodded, understanding the gist of things and the System’s purpose.
If you are enjoying the series, consider leaving a Review.
Right on time, the professor entered the class, casually expanding his Flux to sense the Flux of others, surprised when he noticed Rael’s, ‘His Flux has become a lot stronger overnight.’ He then noticed the mental states of all students, noticing that they had worked hard, but had gotten ample sleep too. He then observed Rael, exhausted, looking on the verge of falling asleep, ‘I see, that makes a bit of sense too. He’s hardworking and also has talent.’ He then began to talk, “Everyone, show me the results of your training.” Hearing the professor’s voice, Rael closed his eyes, using his Flux to move his Plasma from his abdomen to the palm on his right, bringing it back to the abdomen as he next moved it to the palm on his left. In this manner, he moved it to every corner of his body. The professor noticed that Rael was able to move his Plasma a tad faster than the rest,
“The techniques we use to increase our Plasma reserves and strengthen our body are known as Refinement Techniques.” The professor said, “The concept is simple. It’s similar to accumulating fat in our bodies by overeating. But in this process, what we are accumulating is Plasma instead.” “And, the strengthening of our body is even simpler to understand.” He smiled casually, continuing, “If your Plasma increases or decreases in temperature, your body is unable to endure beyond a certain point. But, as long as you don’t go overboard and continue to supply enough nutrients to your body, it would gradually adapt to the Plasma’s temperature extremities.” “Your body cells would evolve to withstand that temperature, automatically strengthening your body.” He said, “And, based on the type of Refinement Technique you practice, the stats growth of your body varies.” “Sir, I’ve heard many students mention stats all the time. W
102 Plasma; after reaching this point, Rael was automatically considered an E-Rank soldier. Though, this was only by the System. Officially, he was still an F-Rank soldier. He would have to head towards the Center for Observation and Regulation that was situated in one corner of the Blue Agate Academy and find out his Stats there. Once it was confirmed that his Plasma reserved had crossed 100, he would naturally be given the status as an E-Rank soldier. ‘But, I have yet to unlock the full potential of an F-Rank soldier.’ Thought Rael, observing his Temperature Index of 48. The limit capable of an F-Rank soldier was a Temperature Index of 108. So, he had a long way to go about that. It was not to mention his Stats were below 11 for all four primary attributes. So, he hadn’t attained the peak of the F-Rank. Also, he had yet to learn how to use his Plasma. So, he couldn’t be called a proper soldier yet.
[Range: 1-45 Metres] [Plasma Consumption: 5-25 Plasma/Second] [Temperature Range: (-87)-600 Degrees Celsius] [Force: 5956 Newton] Needle Swirl; that was the name of this Plasma Skill. Upon seeing it, Rael was first confused before becoming excited, eventually ending up in a dilemma as he looked through its stats. The limit of the Temperature Index for an E-Rank soldier was 540. But, this Plasma Skill had a working range of 687 Temperature Index, not to mention its Force exceeding the limit of E-Rank which was only at 5400 Newton. But at the end of the day, this was still an E-Rank Plasma Skill for a variety of reasons. Needle Swirl shaped the Plasma into a needle and unleashed it in the form of a long, spinning tube. And, depending on his desire, he could alter the Flux within it, allowing him to curve the needle-shaped tube as he pleased. This c
The Arena consisted of multiple temple ruins from an ancient era. There were deity statues all around, broken, moss-covered. Other than the moss and the dense overgrowth of grass, there weren’t any other signs of life here. There were the occasional trees in the place, with some jutting out of the temple buildings. It was a sign of nature taking over the human encampment. At present, Rael was hiding within such a ruin, calming his thumping heart as he heard booming sounds resound around him. The Arena wasn’t too big, only spanning a length and breadth of 300 metres. So, even though the three students appeared far away from each other, they were still within targeting range to a certain extent.“Don’t lose your cool. Calm down…” Rael patted his chest, trying his best to calm himself as he closed his eyes, slowly actuating his Flux, activating Frictional Displacemen
[Congratulations on winning, Arena Rookie. You’ve been awarded 97 Battle Points] The moment Rael returned to the initial scene of white, a screen appeared before him, saying that he had obtained some Battle Points. Curious as to what that entailed, Rael looked through the information, obtaining a basic gist of things. In the Arena, there were countless battle simulations: One-on-one death battle, team capture point, team deathmatch, individual missions, battle simulations, etc. Whether he wished to fight soldiers, Garracks, drive spaceships, or do anything among the infinite possibilities, all was possible in the Arena. And, based on what he did, considering his rate of completion, he would be awarded Battle Points. The Battle Points only have two uses. The first was to buy accessories that he could equip his Arena avatar. It was just beauty related and didn’t have any impact on the various s
“Needle Swirl doesn’t have a future.” Rael returned to his room, recalling the words of his professor. The day’s classes consisted of the professor teaching the students of the various ways to use their Plasma Skills. Even though the professor disliked his choice, he still taught Rael the means and variations to use Needle Swirl. As for his other abilities, the professor praised him for his insight. “If we are considering the E-Rank alone, then the three Plasma Skills you’ve picked are a great combination. But, you should also consider future prospects too.” The professor then went on to lecture him for two hours after Rael had used up all his Plasma to train. Basically, the lecture summarised that once Rael reached the D-Rank, he would have to drop Needle Swirl, as it just wouldn’t be fast enough in this rank. After all, the base physique of the soldier itself would become stronger, not to m
"Now!" At his signal, all the soldiers rushed out of the forest, sprinting at their maximum speed. Rael could feel his heart thump loud enough that he feared it would jump out of his chest. Before his brain could process the state of things, his body had reacted, surprising him as he actually stayed in line with his teammates. He hadn't ever thought a day would come where he wasn't physically held back against his peers. But, there wasn't enough time for Rael to revel in this fact as cold sweat drenched his back, noticing the three Arrankars in the air had detected their presence. Screech! “Shields!” The captain bellowed as the battle suits of everyone spiked in Plasma, glowing bluish-white as the air around them vibrated, causing their legs to turn wobbly. “Gah!” A soldier shouted, having been a tad late in activating his battle
“Chief, a Titan Zombie had arrived!”A scout ran into the settlement, shouting the moment he appeared before Rael’s house.“A Titan Zombie? A faint Plasma Barrier flickered on the skin of the Titan Zombie, protecting itself against the attack as it gazed at the figur
The scouts continued to grow stronger as they battled more and more zombies. Moreover, they didn’t clash head on, for that would be suicide. It also wasn’t efficient. Humanity’s strongest suit was their innate intelligence. And hence, Rael had proposed to set up traps on the surface. First of them was a massive pit that was fifteen metres in height. Once the pit was created, it would be covered by a layer of rock pillars that they had forged through their Plasma. It would be neatly layered to prevent it from collapsing. And all of them would hinge on one unassuming pillar that actually bore all the stress of the trap floor. And, when the zombies moved over the trap, a scout would use the Needle Swirl to break this linchpin, causing the artificial floor to collapse. Once the zombies fell into the pit, the scouts would drop boulders upon them, killing the zombies safe and sound. There was no re
“Everyone!” It was the evening of the next day as Rael stood on a platform, addressing the fifty recruit scouts that had received their Agate Child Stars, “You’ve just received the power of Plasma. In the following days, Captain Xahn would be drilling into you everything you need to learn as a scout.” “It might seem like we’re hurrying through things, and that is true.” Rael nodded, causing them to gaze at him in surprise, “And that’s because the concentration of the zombie radiation is visibly increasing with the passage of every day. Now that you’ve obtained the Agate Star, you too would be able to perceive the changes.” Standing at the side, Deriri listened to Rael’s words, feeling her heart thump in response, her mood heavy. Obviously, she too had noticed the difference. It was easy considering the rate of her Plasma replenishment was steadily increasing. She had timed it on the first day, wondering how much ti
“Let’s return,” Rael spoke after a minute. “But that…zombie…” One of the scouts in his team hesitated. “That’s not an opponent we can think of defeating.” Rael said, “Let’s not waste our time and deal with the rest of the zombies in this region.” “But, will it be possible to ever defeat it?” One of the scouts asked, gritting his teeth as he was still reeling from shock and fear of seeing the hill-sized zombie. “Yes,” Rael nodded confidently, “The size of the Agate Stars can be increased. I’ll need to manually refine more Agates into them. But it’s possible.” “So, once everyone in our settlement has the power, we’ll work on strengthening ourselves.” Rael nodded, “Over time, as we defeat more and more zombies, we would eventually be able to take on that zombie, given we save it as the last zombie that we face on the surface.” “Alright, hope we get t
Five days had passed since Rael had arrived at the settlement, the underground city of Lereal. Currently, a group of seven were inside a house, gazing at the underground map that they had made in the past year through their numerous scouting. As it was a mining city, there were detailed maps about most of the tunnels in the region. But, the mining city had existed for more than a few centuries. So, a lot of routes were forgotten with time. And even if they had been recorded, they weren’t updated once they no longer served any purpose. The routes could have changed due to the intervention by the zombies. After the apocalypse struck, the scouts had been mapping out the routes constantly in the sample copies of maps they had and once they returned, they updated the main map. “The Red Gecko Brigand would proceed towards the waterfalls on the east while the Green Gecko Briga
Pulsor! Rael unleashed the Plasma Skill and leapt, continuously activating it as he flew through the air like an aircraft, making convoluted aerobics as he used the ability to its limit. Suddenly, he unleashed Needle Swirl, piercing its tip through a building wall as the tube part stretched taut, pulling him towards the wall. Rael unleashed Pulsor through his legs, accelerating as he arrived before the wall, but just when it seemed like he would slam into it, his other hand shot out a Needle Swirl on the opposite side, causing it to pierce through a large boulder as it shrunk in length instantly, pulling him accordingly. Dissipating the first Needle Swirl, Rael used the free palm to unleash Pulsor, preventing himself from slamming into the wall as he diverted his linear momentum into radial, making an arc in the air as the Needle Swirl remained firm, attached to the boulder.
“637 people…that’s our death count…” Derisher said with a heavy tone, watching the pile of bodies before them. Not every corpse was there, just the ones they could find. The rest of them were in the bellies of the zombies that had already been melted by the previous Chief. The atmosphere was heavy, the air of sadness, anger, and despair coagulating around them as Rael stood in the centre, gazing at the rows upon rows of corpses with darkened eyes. “Derisher…” He muttered, watching the people pile the bodies after the identities of the corpses had been tallied, “How many people lived on the surface before?” “Around thirty to forty million in our Empire at the very least. If you count the rest of the Empires, the number would become huge. So, I can’t give an accurate estimate.” Derisher said, watching Rael slowly walk towards the pile of corpses. “I see,” Rael muttered, g
“Hmm, the candidates are faring worse than I had expected.” A young boy that seemed around fifteen years old commented, standing on an elevated platform that was situated within the centre of a massive dome. And, embedded on the inner walls of the dome were TVs, each spanning 100 inches in size. There were thousands of such screens in the dome. And each screen showed the POV of the candidate in the screening trial. It displayed everything they were going through within their trials, also displaying the number of Agates they had accumulated. “It’s just the start, so that’s to be expected. Most would take time to adapt to the situation before showing their actual capabilities.” A girl nearby said calmly, “Personally, I’m quite curious about a few candidates myself. I’ve been watching them for the past couple of weeks.” “To think the picky Tina Vink has already picked a few of her members.” The
