Darkness enveloped Sophia, heavy and consuming, yet her mind surged with fragmented visions. Each image was like a piece of a puzzle she didn’t know she had, sparking a resonance deep within her soul. Stars spiralled in a cosmic ballet, vibrant and endless. Towers of crystalline light pierced skies tinged with violet. And then, there was her—or someone who looked like her—standing at the centre of it all.

“Sophia!” Zeta’s voice broke through the haze like a beacon. His tone was steady, but beneath it, she could hear the thread of panic.

Her eyes snapped open, and she found herself lying on the cavern floor, the faint glow of the ruins casting eerie shadows. Zeta’s metallic hands hovered over her, his glowing eyes scanning her intently. Adrian was a few feet away, his back pressed against a wall, his expression a mix of fear and exasperation.

“What happened?” Sophia asked, her voice hoarse.

“The light consumed you,” Zeta replied, helping her sit up. “You were unresponsive for several minutes.”

Adrian let out a shaky laugh. “Minutes? Felt like hours. You were glowing, Sophia. Like, glowing. It was terrifying.”

Ignoring Adrian’s dramatics, Sophia focused on Kael, who stood silently at the edge of the room. His dark gaze was fixed on her, his expression unreadable. “What did I see?” she demanded.

Kael folded his arms, his voice measured. “You’re starting to remember.”

“Remember what?” Sophia snapped. “What am I supposed to be remembering?”

Kael stepped closer, his movements deliberate. “Your connection to this world. To the ruins. To me.”

Sophia’s heart raced. “Be specific, Kael. I’m done with riddles.”

Kael’s jaw tightened, and for a moment, he seemed to wrestle with himself. Then, he spoke. “Xylophia IV isn’t just a planet. It’s a nexus—a point where dimensions intersect. Long ago, beings from across realms fought to control it, to harness its power. But that power required a conduit, a bridge. Someone who could link the realms without destroying them.”

Sophia stared at him, the weight of his words sinking in. “And you think that’s me?”

Kael nodded. “It’s not a coincidence that you’re here. The ruins recognize you because you’re tied to them. You always have been.”

Adrian groaned. “Great. So, Sophia’s not just a genius scientist; she’s also some interdimensional messiah. Fantastic.”

Zeta shot him a glare before turning back to Sophia. “Do you remember anything? Anything from the light?”

Sophia closed her eyes, focusing on the fragments swirling in her mind. “I saw… towers of light, a war, stars collapsing. And there was a woman who looked like me. She was standing at the centre of it all.”

Kael’s expression darkened. “That was you. Or rather, a version of you.”

Sophia’s eyes flew open. “What do you mean, a version of me?”

Kael hesitated, then sighed. “You’re not just Sophia Patel. You’re her reincarnation. The woman you saw was the original bridge, the one who first unlocked Xylophia IV’s power. But something went wrong. She disappeared, and the balance was shattered.”

Sophia shook her head, disbelief washing over her. “That’s impossible.”

“Is it?” Kael countered. “Think about it. The visions, the ruins reacting to you, the symbols you understand instinctively. You’ve felt it, haven’t you? The pull of this place.”

Sophia couldn’t deny it. From the moment she’d arrived on Xylophia IV, there had been an unexplainable connection. The ruins had always felt familiar, like whispers from a forgotten dream.

“If what you’re saying is true,” she said slowly, “why don’t I remember any of this?”

Kael’s gaze softened. “Memories don’t always carry over. Sometimes, they need to be awakened.”

“And the ruins are doing that?”

Kael nodded. “They’re trying to prepare you. But time is running out. The forces that fought for this world are stirring again. They know the bridge has returned.”

Sophia’s stomach churned. “And what happens if they find me?”

Kael’s silence was answer enough.

That night, sleep came reluctantly. When it did, Sophia found herself plunged into vivid dreams. She stood in a field of shimmering grass, beneath a sky streaked with three moons. The air was thick with energy, the hum of it vibrating in her bones.

A voice called out to her, soft yet commanding. “Sophia.”

She turned and saw the woman from her vision. The resemblance was uncanny, but there was an ageless wisdom in her eyes that Sophia lacked.

“Who are you?” Sophia asked.

The woman smiled faintly. “I am you. And you are me. We are the same, separated by time and space.”

“I don’t understand,” Sophia admitted.

“You will,” the woman replied. “But first, you must remember. Look.” She gestured to the horizon, where towers of crystalline light erupted from the ground.

The scene shifted. Sophia saw battles waged in blinding light, armies of shadow and flame clashing with forces of pure energy. She saw herself—or the woman—standing amidst the chaos, her hands raised as she channelled the power of the towers. The energy surged through her, weaving the realms together, holding the universe’s fragile balance.

But then something broke. The light shattered, the towers crumbled, and the woman screamed as she was consumed by the void.

Sophia woke with a start, her heart hammering in her chest. The memories lingered, vivid and raw. She could still feel the woman’s pain, her desperation.

Zeta was at her side instantly. “Another dream?”

Sophia nodded, her voice shaky. “It felt so real. She… she said she was me.”

Kael, who had been leaning against the far wall, straightened. “The memories are coming back faster than I expected.”

Adrian, sitting cross-legged near the entrance, groaned. “Fantastic. More cosmic revelations. Just what we needed.”

Sophia ignored him, her focus on Kael. “If these memories are real, then what happened to her? To me?”

Kael’s expression darkened. “She failed. The balance was lost, and the realms descended into chaos. That’s why your role is so important. You have a chance to succeed where she couldn’t.”

Sophia’s resolve hardened. “Then I need to understand everything. No more secrets, Kael. If I’m going to fix this, I need to know what I’m up against.”

Kael hesitated, then nodded. “Very well. But be warned, Sophia. The truth may be more than you’re ready to handle.”

Before she could respond, the ruins shuddered, and a low, resonant hum filled the air. The symbols on the walls began to glow, their light pulsing in rhythm with her heartbeat.

“What now?” Adrian muttered.

Zeta’s sensors flared, his voice sharp. “Something’s approaching.”

Kael drew his blade, its edge gleaming with ethereal light. “We’re out of time.”

Sophia stood, her fear replaced by a fierce determination. Whatever was coming, she would face it head-on. She was done running from her destiny.

The chamber plunged into chaos as the walls split open, revealing a horde of shadowed figures. Their eyes glowed with malice, and their movements were unnervingly fluid.

Kael stepped forward, his blade raised. “Sophia, stay behind me.”

“No,” she said firmly, stepping beside him. “This is my fight too.”

And as the first o

f the shadows lunged, she felt a surge of power awaken within her, a light that burned brighter than the darkness.
