9 – Greed

Matt sipped his coffee that morning, but the drowsiness wouldn't go away. After the summoning ritual for the fighters, he and the others worked hard to prepare everything. Even if he had time at night, he usually couldn't sleep because he thought about various things.

Will the construction of the stadium be finished before their first show? Will there be a lot of tickets sold? What if the vision doesn't suit the audience? And many more questions that haunt his head.

So, the young man came out of his tent for a morning walk before continuing his work.

"Good morning. Did everything go well? Is there anything I need to hear?" He approached Zaa and Megumi, discussing something near the residential area.

"Well, it turns out that our healer personnel are still lacking in treating injured workers," Zaa explained while checking his notebook. "That's because we're doing all of this at such a fast pace, sir. But I don't blame you. The sooner we get this over with, the better."

Matt looked at the three houses under construction. The first is shaped like a plain apartment reserved for lower-level fighters. The second is bigger, with more complete facilities for those with higher ranks.

And the last one is the mansion. Only the champion can live there.

This is one way Matt saves money. He didn't need to build mansions for all of them. The bottom-level fighter will strive to be at the top.

Passionate fighters are a tremendous asset.

"I think we can still add more healers, sir," Megumi added because Matt never responded. "And I think this is crucial. Miss Arael has complained many times."

"Do it if it's really needed, then." Matt rubbed his face, hoping that request would not cause more damage to their budget. "So, is there anything else you can report to me?"

"As for the stadium, I'm sure it will be completed the day before the event, despite some delays due to injured workers." Zaa gave a thumbs up. "So there's nothing to worry about."

"We only have a few hundred tickets left." Megumi smiled. "It looks like Elmar's trailer made a significant impact, and hopefully, by the time the show gets underway, all tickets will be sold out."

Matt thinks for a moment. "What about the fighters? Are some of them still not willing to be interviewed by Elmar?"

The assistant sighed. "Yes, unfortunately. They don't think it matters."

Matt wants to minimize forcing them to do something. He still wants the fighters to be comfortable here, so they can fight in the best conditions.

Hearing a slight commotion, Matt and the others turned their heads in one direction, finding Rory and Alex walking with the women surrounding them. Those two warriors wore friendly smiles and occasionally chuckled together with those people.

"We have to create a system so that the female servants of gods cannot enter the area at will," Zaa complained. "Rory has always been famous because he was rumored to be joining CoB, and the trailer brought a lot of fans here."

"And Alexander Mirea became known because he was always with Rory. Fans who meet Rory tell others about Alex." Megumi explained further. "Apart from the fact that people are interested in how Alex looks in the trailer."

"But this can create a massive boost for us." Matt started thinking about taking advantage of it, for example, holding a fan meet or something.

Rory waved to Matt, said goodbye to the women, and jogged to the president. Those fans snorted and glared at Matt.

But Matt didn't want to bother with that.

"What is it, Mr. Egan?" Matt asked the warrior.

The nobleman paid his respects with a slight bow. "Do you have a minute, sir? I'd like to have a word with you, but you seem busy lately."

"Sure," Matt replied, then he and Rory started to walk away.

But before that, the president noticed that Alex was looking at him again, even though the girls were trying to chat with the blonde-haired warrior. There was something in his gaze. Matt could feel it.

"I'm sorry that you guys are still living in the tents. I hope that doesn't offend you." Matt opened the conversation.

"I'm used to being on the battlefield, sir. This place is still much nicer than some places I've been to. Even though I look noble on the outside, I'm a warrior at heart." The red-haired man glanced around, making sure no one was listening. "I want to tell you a little story, sir. You may already know that I was rumored to be joining the CoB. It has some basis, sir. I do want it."

"Then why didn't that thing happen?"

Rory chuckled. "My God thinks CoB is boring, and All-Savage isn't for me. But I'm too bored living in his palace because there's nothing to do."

Matt nodded. "Well, let's hope this organization makes you happy."

The warrior was silent for a moment, looking at the stadium in the distance. "I'm greedy, sir. Yes, I'm pursuing my military career to serve my country, but one other thing makes me thirsty. Something that makes me feel more alive."

"Glory," Matt smirked, already able to guess where the conversation was going. "Pride, the satisfaction of being number one. Whatever you call it, the bottom line is that you want to be on top, just like when you become a general with many awards, to be a person who is more influential than your own king."

"Maybe some people will think I am not sincere in fighting for my people." Rory stopped by a tree, then turned to face Matt. "But is it wrong to enjoy that pride when you're at the top? Is it wrong to feel happy because your name is celebrated by so many people? Since I'm already dead and can't get things like that from being a general, is it wrong for me to look for it here?"

"It's someone like you we're looking for, Mr. Egan. Someone with a winning mentality. I'm glad you've joined us."

"I will be your champion, sir." The warrior pointed at the president's face. "And I will take this organization to new heights. That's what you want, right? You are as greedy as me."

Matt's smile widened.
