For three days, Styles was kept in the dungeons with no food or water. His stomach was growling ferociously but there was nothing he could do.
He was weak and hungry. His throat hurt from dryness caused by lack of water. His vision was blurry out slowly. With the way it was going, he was bound to pass out soon.“Hey,” he heard a soft whisper and opened his eyes. It was his hallway savior. He let out a weak smile.“Here to save me again?”“You bet!” She winked, passing him a plate through the bars. His eyes nearly bulged out at the sight of food.Even his stomach grumbled in excitement. He opened the plate quickly and started digging in.“Easy, tiger. Here, have some water. You must be thirsty.”He took the cup carefully and gulped down the water. It was so refreshing. Heaven on earth.“I don't know why you still stick around here with everything happening. Do you not have a place to run to?” She asked him.Styles stopped eating. The girl was surprised by the sudden pause and was about to apologize in case she offended him unknowingly.“I do have a place to go. Home,” he answered. Her lips pulled into a smile, “like they say, there is no place like home.”Styles was silent for a while, contemplating telling her what he was about to say.“Is everything okay? Did you suddenly lose your appetite?” She asked him.“No. You see, four years ago, my father died and I was greatly depressed. There were so many responsibilities and I was just a new adult. I guess I was terrified so I did the only thing that made sense to me then,” he paused.“Which was?”“What a coward would do. Run. I ran without looking back. I ran until I came upon a small village that didn't require much to survive. I started life there, and one day, I met Mona. She came to visit a friend and just like that, it was love at first sight. I was almost happy,” he let out a sigh.“Now, you're a prisoner. Smooth transition, isn't it?” She joked and he chuckled sadly.Taking a proper look at her, he realized she was indeed more beautiful than he realized.“Why are you being so nice to me? I have a scarred face and no legs.”“That is the more reason I should be nice to you. Everyone deserves love, Styles. It shouldn't just apply when you have a pretty face,” she said.“You know, every time you came over, I soiled your shirt with tea,” she started.“It was an accident,” he chuckled.“One that earned me a lot of slaps and whips in the past but you just brushed it off like it was nothing and asked if I was hurt. It was the first time I felt human in a long time. Not to sound like a stalker, but I watched you after that. Every single time you came over. You are indeed a nice person, sir.”“I never got to catch your name,” Styles said suddenly.“Ivory. Yes, like the flower,” she answered before he could ask.“Ivory,” he tested the name on his lips. “Soon, I'll come take you away from this place. And it won't be to a place where you have to work or swallow insults. It'll be something close to heaven where you can live like a queen,” he promised. Her eyes glistened as she smiled.“Before you dream of taking me to heaven, how about we get you out of here first? You need to go home.”“I intend to.”And just like that, the servant girl helped him clear his belongings and posted another letter to his people. It was risky but she helped him escape without considering what was at stake.Getting past the guards was not a problem. She happened to know a secret passage to the outskirts of the city.“Be safe,” she whispered between their hug.“I'll come for you soon,” he promised again. “Tell me you'll wait.”“I will.”With Ivory gone, the black horses emerged from the shadows.“Your Highness!” General Ragi got off his horse. Kneeling on one knee, he continued, “We have waited so long for your return.”“I know, Ragi,” Styles patted his shoulder. The man raised his head, shock taking over his features.“What have they done to you?!” He gasped. “Did those… just say the word your Majesty and I will have them wiped out!”“There will be no need for that Ragi. I will heal, trust me. I just need to get home first. The medicines there are more effective,” Styles said.“May I lift you, your highness?” He asked.“Yes, please.”Ragi lifted him off the wheelchair and placed him carefully on his horse. He flew over and wrapped a protective arm around Styles before riding into the woods with the other soldiers behind him.***********“Where is that good-for-nothing? How could he have escaped under your watch?!” Duchess Elena barked at the guards.“We're sorry, Your Highness. We don't know how he escaped. We were on guard all night and we didn't see a thing. Even the guards at the gate saw no one.”“Useless! All of you! A cripple left easily in a palace filled with armed men and none of you saw anything?! How useless can you be?!” She barked.“Forgive us, Your Highness!” They bowed.“I don't care how you do it but you have to find Styles and bring him here! He owes me a huge sum and if he's not here to pay it by sunrise tomorrow, you all will pay me thrice the amount!” She threatened. The guards took turns interrogating all the maids in the palace in the hope of finding information about Styles. For hours, all their efforts were futile until they came upon a maid.“I didn't see him leave but I know the last person that went into the dungeons was Ivory. I don't know what she went there to do but she took quite a while to return,” the maid answered.“So you are saying she might know where the missing cripple is?”“I didn't say so. I only said she was the last person I saw go in there. You should question her.”That was how Ivory was surrounded by seven grumpy-looking men. From their expression, it seemed like they were going to tear her apart if she as much as breathed the wrong way.“Where is Styles?” Was the first question thrown at her but it didn't catch her off guard. From their mean expression, she already expected it.“And why would I know where he is? He is your prisoner, isn't he?” She retorted without flinching.“Now is not the time for stupid games. If you know where he is, I advise you to speak now before you make things worse for yourself,” the chief guard threatened.“And I don't understand the whole point of this interrogation. I don't know where he is and frankly, it is not my business!” She stated.“You went into the dungeons last night!”“To eat stolen food,” she rolled her eyes. “Our mistress wouldn't give me good unless I completed my duties and I was starving. The dungeon is the only place safe from these nosy maids but for you to know that, I guess I wasn't as sneaky as I hoped.”They stared intensely at her and Ivory returned their gaze. She had practiced it over and over. She made sure to give a believable story, one most likely true when confirmed.“If we find out you're lying, you're dead meet,” they threatened but Ivory was only relieved they were gone.“You mean all these happened to you and you still insist we leave them be?” Ragi was raging now.A useless set of bandits had the temerity to attack the heir to the Black Empire? His so-called in-laws dared to maltreat him and even demand compensation?!“I can't believe you let this happen! We should be serving their fingers to them for breakfast!” Ragi fumed.“Calm down, Ragi. We can't have you unleashing more chaos. We are going to handle this my way,” Styles said calmly.Ragi was unhappy with the decision. This was a boy he had watched grow up. His father had charged him with the duty to protect him since he was ten years old. When the Prince left home four years ago, he left like a failure. He searched every possible place he could think of but his efforts had been futile.Only for the boy to return four years later with a disfigured face and broken limbs? The ancestors would turn in their graves if he let this happen.“Ragi,” Styles stroked his arm. “I know it hurts you to see ha
“I advise you to watch your tone when you speak to me. You do not command me,” Ragi warned with a deadly glare. Mona bowed her head. “I am sorry. I didn't mean to disrespect you but he is not supposed to be here and he is stealing from the Prince,” she said quietly, keeping her eyes on her toes while hiding her trembling fingers behind her. “I didn't steal, General. His Majesty gave me these. He said they no longer fit him,” Styles told Ragi. The man wanted to roll his eyes at the ridiculousness of the situation but Styles gave him a stern look.“You may leave now,” he said coldly and Styles rolled out. “You too!” Mona walked out of the room sullenly. The stupid cripple had ruined her chances of exploring her future room.Ragi shut the door behind her and led her back to her room.“I am not feeling sleepy. I can keep you company if you like,” she offered.“Goodnight,” he said coldly and headed out. He went in search of Styles and found him in the library.“I'm not sure I can stand
“Signed,” Ragi handed over the scroll to Styles. “All five signatures.”Styles went through the scroll to confirm the signatures. A smirk played on his lips. He had them right where he wanted them. “Thank you, Ragi,” he smiled. “I will have a word with the treasurer.”“Your Highness,” Ragi started skeptically, “are you really going to let them plan the wedding? Those people cannot be trusted.”“In this situation, I am the one they should be worried about. I want funds released to them, any amount they demand no matter how ridiculous it is. I do trust that they are going to make my wedding one of a kind,” Styles responded.Ragi was even more confused. From everything, he knew the Prince was not planning to wed that promiscuous woman. So who was the bride then?“If you don't mind me asking, who is this woman you are planning to wed? Is it another Duke's daughter?” Styles chuckled at the statement, “Not all women from royal families are like Mona. Just do as I asked and watch everythin
“Didn't I tell you? These people are bloody rich!” Klein exclaimed. “You've landed a good one, sister.”“I always knew you would elevate this family from the moment I pushed you out of me. Look at us now, you are indeed a blessing,” Duchess Elena praised.Mona sat proudly, feeling elevated as her family showered her with compliments. If only her useless husband was here to see her. She could imagine the wave of shame that would overwhelm him. He might even be pushed to take his life. “Do you know if he has a sister?” Joel asked. “Surely, in such a big kingdom, there must be a princess.” “You have a point. We should ask Ragi. If there is indeed a princess, we must do our best to woo. If she chooses one of us, it is a big win for the family too,” Klein agreed. In all of this, the Duke was silent. There was this feeling of uncertainty weighing heavily on him.He couldn't tell if it was the prospect of giving his daughter out or his instincts sensing something terrible coming.“Honey,
Ragi glanced at Styles. Was he really going to let this strange ill-mannered woman punish his people before him?Styles gave him a brief nod before rolling inside.“Get up, all of you,” Ragi ordered. Mona and her mother were flabbergasted. Did he just release the maids they were punishing after hearing everything they did?The maids got off the ground without hesitation.“Is that it? You are just going to let them go?” Mona asked him when he made to take his leave. “What else would you have me do? You said you want a satin dress, right? It will be delivered in less than an hour. If you don't mind, I have more important things to handle than your tantrums,” Ragi responded, walking out on them.“He's beginning to get on my nerves, mother. Who does he think he is? He is just a mere general and I am the Prince's bride. He should show me some respect!” Mona gritted. Elena put a hand on her daughter's shoulder to calm her down. “You will have to tolerate him until you are instated as Que
Mona stormed into the hall, surprising even her parents. “Mona!” Duchess Elena gasped. “That's not… that's not you?” “Of course not, mom! How could you not recognize your own daughter?!” Mona snapped. The Duke's family were confused. Sure they had noticed a slight change in the girl’s figure and mannerisms but they assumed it was their daughter trying to be perfect. After all, she denied everyone the opportunity to see her three days before the wedding. She also mentioned something about going on dieting so her wedding dress would fit so how did she expect them to tell the difference? To crown it all, the girl had a veil over her face. Were they supposed to strip her off it to check if it was their daughter or not?Even the Prince had a mask on his face so no one could tell. Mona ignored her parents and matched them to the altar. “Highness, as you can see, I am the real Mona, the woman you desperately wanted to wed. This woman here is an imposter!” Gasps filled the air. “She is
Her life was crashing before her very eyes. The once beautiful lady of Xori City was going to be a slave?Tears blurred her vision as she gazed at the guests. Many of them consisted of men who asked for her hand, friends whom she often looked down on, and people she trampled on. Now she was going to live a miserable and wretched life. How was she supposed to know that Styles was a prince? There was nothing princely about him then.He was simple, soft-spoken, always in the cheapest of clothes. How could he the heir to such a powerful empire endure all that humiliation from her? While the guests disbanded for the wedding reception, to get themselves entertained and stuffed with food, Mona was left with her family to mourn their loss.“This is all your fault! You courted a man for two years and somehow missed the fact that he was a prince?” Her mother was the first to cast a stone.“This is absolutely ridiculous, Mother! How could ugly crippled Styles turn prince overnight? There is so
When Cedric received the invitation to the council meeting, he did not expect they would be discussing his niece's coronation. With all five chiefs present in the council supporting the decision to coronate Prince Styles in three days, Cedric knew his opinions were likely going to be overlooked. “Three days sounds just appropriate. All that is kept is to assign duties and preparations begin,” Lord Orio said. Cedric looked at the man in disbelief, “Three days sounds appropriate? For a boy who ran away for four years? You are suddenly going to gift him the throne like it's nothing?” “Cedric, with all due respect, I ask that you watch the words you utter,” Lord Blane incepted. “What wrong have I done by pointing out this obvious mistake?” Cedric huffed. “You want to crown a boy who runs away at the first sight of danger? His father, the Emperor, God bless his soul, passed away. What did your prince do? He ran away. What do you think will happen when we are faced with a war?”The Lor
