As Rylan and the rest of the four other students followed Colonel Glenn, they were led to a hall. When they stepped in, their eyes widened in admiration.
The hall was filled with futuristic weapons hanging on the wall. They had the form of basic human weapons, such as swords and guns, but the technology used to make them was far beyond ordinary human understanding. The hall looked like a training hall, with a large open space in the center and various obstacles and targets scattered around the perimeter. In the hall, two teachers dressed in military attire turned to face them. One was a woman with a tablet in her hand, and the other was a hooded mysterious man. Colonel Glenn introduced the woman. "This is Jane, and she will be the one conducting the testing today." Jane smiled and nodded at the students. "Hello, everyone. I'll be evaluating your abilities and combat levels today. Please don't worry, it's just a routine test." Colonel Glenn continued. "The five of you will be separated into three groups. The first group will contain students who are originals. Please step to my right if you fall in that category." With that said, Drake and Kyra proudly took their places at the Colonel's right. Originals were humans who have a unique ability that could hardly be learned or taught. They were born with it, and it was part of who they were. During the war with the Maulaks, some humans awakened different types of unique abilities that left the Maulaks confused. This facilitated the winning of the war for the humans. Colonel Glenn continued. "The second group will contain students who are adaptors. Adaptors are students who can't awaken an ability from within them like the originals, but have acquired an ability book which helped them awaken an ability. Please step to my left.” With that said, Lilith stepped to the Colonel's left. Rylan wondered what level of ability book she was currently training with. The books ranged from level one to six. One had to train from level one all the way to level six and it could take years depending on the individual’s ability to learn. However, originals could awaken strong abilities way beyond level six Colonel Glenn continued. "The third group will contain students who are...unclassified, and yet without an ability. These students will go through the ability awakening machine. The machine will detect the ability cells within the individual and It will enable them to awaken an ability if they were an original, but if not, they would be given a level one ability book to train with.” Colonel Glenn explained, pointing at a cubic transparent box. “Rylan and John, I assume you two fall within this category, yes?" “Yes sir,” the duo replied. Generally, before the age of 17, everyone was expected to awaken an ability, or better still, buy an ability book and learn. That is why the age requirement for the military academy was 17 years minimum. Next, The Colonel turned to the mysterious hooded man and nodded, giving him a signal, then he turned to Kyra, Lilith and Drake. “You three, step forward.” The trio did as told. Suddenly the mysterious man placed his hand on the ground, and several dummies were formed in the training area. They had the form of a human, but they were made of clay, and they couldn't speak. As the mysterious man finished setting up the dummies, Colonel Glenn turned to Kyra, Lilith, and Drake. "Alright, it's time to test your abilities. I want you to fight against these dummies and show me what you're capable of." Kyra was the first to act. She stepped forward with determination, and activated her ability. Her snow-white hair glowed with a soft, ethereal light, then She drew her sword that also glowed with a faint blue light. As she held the sword, the air around her began to grow cold, and a faint mist formed around her feet. Drake watched in admiration, his eyes wide with excitement. "Ice Ability? Impressive," he said, grinning at Kyra. Kyra didn't respond, she simply charged forward, her eyes fixed intently on the dummies. With a swift and deadly precision, she began to take down the dummies, her movements a blur of speed and agility. Next, it was Lilith's turn. She opened her bag and pulled out two small seeds. She dropped them on the ground and then pulled out a bottle of water. She sprinkled the water over the seeds, and almost instantly, they began to grow at an incredible rate. Within seconds, two massive, monstrous plants towered over the dummies, their thick, thorny vines writhing like living serpents. Lilith controlled the plants with a mere thought, and they responded by firing out sharp, deadly spikes towards the dummies. The spikes struck with force, tearing through the dummies with ease. Drake watched in amazement, his eyes wide with excitement. "That's a cool ability, what is it called?" he asked, grinning at Lilith. Lilith smiled, looking pleased with herself. "Thanks, it is called Botanical ability," she said, her eyes sparkling with pride. Rylan watched in amazement. ‘That ability was learnt from an ability book? The book must have been very expensive.’ he thought in admiration. Now it was Drake's turn. He cracked his knuckles, a confident grin spreading across his face. "Alright, watch this," he said, his eyes glinting with excitement. As he raised his hands, a brilliant light burst forth, illuminating the entire room. When the light faded, Drake was standing amidst a swirling vortex of gravitational waves. Drake's ability was called "Gravitonics." He could manipulate gravitational waves, creating powerful blasts of energy that could knock enemies off their feet, or even create small singularities that could pull enemies towards him. “Gravity is what holds these dummies together, if I turn it off, they crumble.” Drake said as he crumbled all the dummies, making Kyra very pissed. As Drake demonstrated his ability, Colonel Glenn watched with a keen eye, analyzing Drake's technique. "Very good, Drake," he said, nodding in approval. "You have excellent control over your ability." While the trio were being tested, Jane approached Rylan and John. “Step into the glass box,” she instructed them as she tapped on her tablet, activating the ability awakening machine. As Rylan and John approached the box, Rylan noticed that John was too nervous to go first, “ I'll go first,” Rylan said with a thumbs up. John smiled,”thank you,” he said. Rylan took a deep breath and stepped into the machine. The glass door closed behind him. Miss Jane tapped on her tablet , and the machine was activated. Rylan felt a strange sensation, like his cells were being stirred up. After a few minutes, the machine beeped, and the door opened. Rylan stepped out, feeling a little dazed but also anxious. He looked at his hands, wondering if he could feel any changes. However, “ sorry, the system couldn't detect any ability cells. You'll have to pick one of the ability books to train with.” Jane said in a soft tone. ‘Oh man, my first option to get an ability was a total failure.’ Rylan shook his head as those thoughts ran through his mind. John's nervousness grew worse after Rylan came out without an ability. He stepped into the box and the machine activated. However his result was the same as Rylan’s. The five students were assembled, and the mysterious hooded man activated his ability, but this time it was another ability. ‘He has two abilities? How?’ Rylan wondered. The mysterious man gave each student a magical signature which reflected their current combat level, and the signature could automatically change if the students progressed. “Look at the back of your hands and see what your combat level is at the moment,”Colonel Glenn instructed. Everyone looked at the back of their palms. And Kyra was the first to complain. “Level five? How disappointing.” She shook her head. Lilith checked hers and saw three. She too looked disappointed. Drake checked his and saw seven. “Not bad, but I still have a long way to go.” He said with a smile. However, Rylan and John checked theirs and noticed zero. “You two are still to get an ability. Go over to that shelf and choose an ability you would like to learn.” Colonel Glenn said, pointing at a shelf with level one ability books. The duo headed to the shelf. The shelf had four types of ability books, that is; Air, Fire, Earth and water. John picked an Earth ability, while Rylan picked a wind ability. “Here is the assignment for you two.” Colonel Glenn started speaking, referring to Rylan and John. “ Right now your combat level is at zero. When you get home, you will follow the instructions in those books, and if you manage to awaken an ability, your combat level will move up to one. Tomorrow I hope to see progress, you are all dismissed.” With that said, the five students left the hall. Rylan headed straight to the train station and boarded a train which would take him back to Ravenshire village. He was disappointed that he didn't awaken an ability like the originals, but he knew that not all hope was lost. He was determined to master the wind ability and come back tomorrow with results.Rylan trudged through the front door, his shoulders slumped in disappointment. He had been so sure that he would awaken an ability like the originals, but it seemed that fate had other plans.Gaius, who was sitting on the couch, looked up at Rylan's sad face and asked, "Well?"Rylan shook his head, feeling a pang of disappointment. "I didn't awaken an ability," he said, his voice barely above a whisper.Gaius's expression softened, and he got up from the couch to put a comforting hand on Rylan's shoulder. "It's okay, Rylan," he said. "Not everyone awakens an ability right away. You're still young, and you have plenty of time to develop your skills."Rylan sighed, feeling a small sense of comfort at Gaius's words. He reached into his backpack and pulled out the wind ability book that he had received as a consolation prize."I did get this, though," Rylan said, holding up the book. "It's a level one wind ability book. I'm going to go train with it."Gaius's eyes lit up with interest. "T
“Hey level zero boy.” Rizzo called out as he slowly approached, his goonies circling around Rylan.“What do you want? I don't want any trouble.” Rylan said, stepping backwards.“Let me tell you something. You're a weakling, Rylan," Rizzo sneered. " Which means failure. And I am allergic to failure. So here's the deal. You're going to apply for a group change, or else…."Rizzo held Rylan's arm, and Rylan felt an intense heat coming from Rizzo's hand, burning his flesh.Rylan felt a surge of anger at Rizzo's behavior, but he knew that he was outnumbered. He had no choice but to accept Rizzo's ultimatum."Fine," he muttered. "I'll apply for a group change."Rizzo sneered at him. "Good choice, weakling. You won't regret it."As Rylan walked away, he felt a sense of relief wash over him. He had never wanted to be part of a group like Rizzo's anyway. He was better off on his own. The next day was the day of ability testing at the military academy. Rylan woke up to the distant horn of the military train, which had stopped at Ravenshire Village to carry the new students.
