Chapter Hundred and twenty

The mansion sounded with the closing of the heavy oak front door as Mr. Higgins departed, leaving behind an air of tension. Charles, brooding and worried, face his wife in the living room.

“Charles, the scandal in the press is meant to tear us apart. How could you be accused of stealing the Adams family company?” Norah exclaimed, her eyes reflecting a mixture of disbelief and concern.

Charles sighed heavily. “Norah, I need to talk to Emma. I have to know why she’s doing this, even though they’ve already lost everything.”

Norah hesitated, recalling the last disastrous visit Charles had made to Emma. “Charles, the last time you went to see her, it only ended in provocation. I don’t think it’s a good idea.”

“I’ll handle it better this time. I won’t let her get to me,” Charles insisted, determination in his eyes.

The couple engaged in a slight argument about it. Charles pleaded, “Norah, you need to trust me on this. I need to understand Emma’s motives.”
