Chapter Seventy-one

Charles paced nervously in his elegant study, the books sitting on his bookshelves witnessing his unease. The matter at hand had shattered the peace in his life. He needed Mr. Higgins, his trusted lawyer, here and fast.

With trembling fingers, Charles dialed the familiar number, listening to the persistent ringing until a weary voice answered, “Mr. Higgins’ office, how may I assist you?”

“This is Charles,” he replied, his voice barely concealing the urgency that gripped him. “I need Mr. Higgins here immediately. It’s about the Adams family allegations.”

There was a pause on the other end, as if the gravity of the situation had floated through the telephone wires. “I’ll relay the message,” the voice said, and the call ended.
