Chapter Sixty

Emma and her mother, Elizabeth Adams, found themselves seated in an charmless, middleclass restaurant downtown. It had been a while since they’d treated themselves to a meal in such place, but the recent turn of events had forced them to reconsider their usual extravagances.

The shadow of their financial downfall loomed over their table, a constant reminder of their declining family savings. With weary smiles, Emma and Elizabeth glanced at the menus that lay before them. Their faces, etched with concern, betrayed their attempts to appear nonchalant. The aroma of freshly cooked food filled the air.

Their waiter, a young man with an empathetic smile, approached their table. “Good afternoon, ladies. Are you ready to order?”

Emma attempted to focus on the menu. Her hazel eyes scanning it, she hesitated, then finally decided on a modest salad.

Mrs. Adams, on the other hand, scanned the menu with a critical eye before settling on an expensive steak dish, complete with all the trimmings.
