Chapter Ten

Charles stirred in his soft bed, half-aware of the unfamiliar sound filling the room. His eyes fluttered open, and with a disgruntled groan, he finally registered the constant beeping of the alarm at his bedside. He reached over and fumbled to switch it off, irritation evident in his movements. It had been a long time since he needed an alarm to wake up; he usually rose with the sun, but today was different.

The morning light filtered through the curtains as Charles tried to return to his slumber. Just as his eyelids began to close again, a knock on his bedroom door startled him. His brows furrowed in confusion, wondering who would dare interrupt his restful morning. Checking the time on the alarm, he noticed it was already past eight. Charles sighed and got out of bed, heading to the door.
