It seems that humans have a tendency to perceive extraterrestrial beings as resembling themselves or the things they are most familiar with. It's difficult for one's imagination to conjure something completely unknown, but it can instinctively draw upon familiar elements to create a mental image. This happens involuntarily, as the brain naturally makes connections based on prior experiences.
