Chapter 009 – Three Days Later

*****

Today would mark the third day that Williams had struck a deal with the manager here to become their server for three days before he provided a solution to the meal he had consumed.

During these three days, Williams has had his fair share of labor to perform.

Perhaps, it was so that Williams wouldn't have time or means to get ready for a solution, or simply because he was repelled to the core, he was nearly worked to exhaustion in these three days.

His downtime was only during meals, and two hours of respite every day.

Also, his meals were meager portions, which were primarily the charred part from the pots, well... it wasn't that Williams minded as they had presumed he would, merely because he had ingested worse things these past five years.

As for where he was allowed to sleep, it was inside one cramped space that only had no chair, let alone a mat or bed, where Williams could only sleep with his back against the wall, and his legs folded inside his arms in a curled position every day.

He wasn't permitted even ten feet close to the entrance, otherwise, he would only be pushed back by the robust guards who had taken their positions in all the entrances of the restaurant since that day.

Apart from those, Williams has now learned many things and all the workings of the restaurant.

First, the reason why Laura was so terrified of the Plump man as if he were her nighttime horror, and why the Plump man had been so excited that Laura was involved in what had transpired was because the Plump man was interested in Laura sexually as he was with many other ladies in the restaurant.

But unlike many of these ladies, Laura wouldn't yield no matter what, not to mention always thwarting the Plump man's plan every time he got close to pursuing her.

As he had overheard it, Laura would have even been threatened with being fired countless times, as the Fatty's way to coerce Laura to comply with his will, considering her Laura family's situation, but it was simply the unchangeable rule of the restaurant that stopped it... has Laura had always been doing her job diligently.

This prompted Williams to inquire about Laura's family situation, and when he was informed, he finally understood why Laura had lost her entire spirit after what occurred that day.

It was simply because Laura was the sole provider for her family.

According to the story Williams heard, Laura's father was a cripple who couldn't work while her mother was chronically ill and needed constant treatment to stay alive.

Not only that, but Laura also has a younger brother and sister both in high school.

With that, Williams finally comprehended why Laura had despised him intensely that day.

He was even surprised later when Laura started to show concern about his ill-treated situation, sometimes giving him part of her food, and continually attempting to assist him with his tasks so that he would have more time to rest.

It was as if she had completely forgotten that she and her family's fate now relied upon the decision that would be made three days later, which is today.

Another thing that Williams managed to learn during these three days was that this restaurant had only been a low-tier restaurant in the past, which was why he hadn't known about it before. But as it was, it was the Plump Man that managed to elevate it to the status it holds today and the renown it enjoys.

It was due to this that the owner of the place retained the Plump man as the manager even after all the financial mismanagement he committed and all the negative rumors he had heard about him.

That wasn't all that Williams had learned in these brief few days.

He also knew the woman who seemed to have betrayed Laura by rushing to report what had happened that day.

It was because due to the work points and all, Laura and her had chances to be promoted to the next supervisor position, but Laura's point seemed to be several times higher. Well... Williams who had experienced his fair share of betrayal wasn't surprised by this; he wasn't even surprised that the lady was Laura's best friend who had been utterly crushed when she saw Laura continuing her job that day as if she hadn't committed a grave offense.

Of most of these things, it wasn't that Williams was told, rather, he overheard them during his continuous and nonstop shifts of work.

Another thing.

The agreement made was that Williams would be a server during these days, but the tasks assigned to him went beyond that.

He worked as a server, as per the agreement; he worked as a chef's assistant, he worked at the counter, he worked as an escort who would show patrons around based on their card level, he worked as a customer service representative, and he even worked as an internal security team member.

For some reason, Williams felt as if the Plump Man was setting traps for him to stumble into so that he would have more leverage against him, but would Williams who was on a mission do? Of course, no.

Not especially when he was assured by the system that those myriad of jobs wouldn't affect his quest, as long as he worked as a sever each day for the next three days.

***

That wasn't all.

Since that day, when Williams became a free worker there, the restaurant has been overflowing, with many people coming every day to see the legend who had finished meals of fifty people on a single seat.

In a simple sentence, these three days were nothing but torment for Williams.

Looking at him now, his eyes weren't only pure red and around them weren't only dark from lack of sleep, his entire appearance was completely pallid from endless work and lack of rest.

In fact, Williams would have given up if not for the reward he was waiting for, the reward in sight that would change his life and enable him to achieve his dreams.

.....

"Are you genuinely attempting to harm yourself?"

Williams, who had been a counter attendant for the past three hours, suddenly heard a concerned-filled voice from the side.

Turning his head, the voice belonged to Laura, whose face was filled with sympathy right now, and her eyes as if she might start shedding tears on his behalf.

Forcing a wry smile, Williams shook his head. "No, I won't harm myself; I'm just trying to fulfill a deal made by me."

"But..."

The lady was frustrated, unable to comprehend what was wrong with Williams and this deal, and not surprised at all by Williams' response as this was what she had been given the day she started expressing her concern.

"I've told you already, just stop, and let's accept our fate. Look at you now, even after three days of being tormented, you will still receive what you would have initially received from the start."

Williams made no intention to respond.

"Don't even think that villain will pardon you because you worked yourself almost to death. I'm telling you, that villain was nothing but a devil. He never forgives and forgets."

She tried convincing Williams further like she had been doing since she forgave him, but Williams who had become so feeble now and was only compelling himself to push further, offered no response apart from continuing to smile gently.

But just then, a snicker sounded.

"You two are still here having time to communicate? Hehehe... well, what did I expect in the first place? You would soon receive the punishment deserved by you two in a few moments from now, and you..." Vera Darkwood, Laura's best friend, who had now discarded all pretense and now displayed her true colors to Laura, grinned wickedly as she suddenly pointed at Laura.

"I tried to convince you countless times then to intentionally lower your points and relinquish the supervisor position for me, but what did you always say? Typically uttering nonsense about having a fair competition, that no matter who wins, we are still best friends. Hehehe, go do a fair competition and best friends behind bars and in your mother's house after what was about to happen."

By now, Williams and Laura had become utterly silent as they watched the slightly attractive, but even more unsightly because of the malevolent grin expression on the lady's face as she spoke endlessly.

"You, just wait!"

Offering this lastly, Vera chuckled again, and strutted away, leaving Laura unable to react.

"I still don't want to believe that the person just now was my best friend with whom I've shared both good and bad days..."

Laura suddenly sighed.

Williams would have attempted to comfort her as before, but he knew that even opening his mouth now would take a toll on his body, so he simply smiled gently at her.

Then like so, Williams disregarded the incessant shocked stares he had been receiving from the customers these past few days as if he were a celebrity and resumed his job, compelling himself and exhausting himself to the utmost.

All of a sudden, Williams became extremely weak and realized that he couldn't continue further, that he was utterly drained of everything, even his willpower.

"Are you okay?"

He heard a concerned-filled distant voice in his mind, but Williams felt that he was about to faint.

'I... I... No! I can't faint now! Three days will be over soon! What will Laura's fate be? I put her in this... I...'

[Ding! Congratulations to the host. Three days have passed since the host accepted the quest to be a server for the next three days, and the host has completed the mission.]

Williams, "_"

For some reason, the voice in his mind suddenly sounded like all the sustenance he needed. His eyes immediately regained clarity, and his body regained strength.

'I...'

Williams immediately raised his head and saw many alarmed and concerned gazes looking at him.

The alarmed gazes were from the customers and most of the present staff, while the concerned gazes were from Laura and two other members of the staff who had been very kind to Williams these few days.

"Are you okay?"

Laura's face, which was filled to the brim with fear and concern, appeared beside Williams' side, alarming Williams slightly as he didn't know when she had appeared.

But before he could respond, a deep voice sounded in front of them.

"Williams, Laura, the manager has summoned you to his office; three days are completed."

"I..."

Laura's face abruptly turned pale in an instant.

Although she knew that this day would arrive sooner or later, it still took her by surprise.

As for the place, it fell silent for a moment before suddenly, it became chaotic with noise.

"Did you hear that? It's time to finally know what would happen to those two!!"

"I've been coming here every day these past three days just to know the end of the movie, is it finally time already?"

Once again, the customers began, not mincing their words at all. But Williams only offered Laura an affirming grin to Laura, his face suddenly brimming with courage.

This sudden expression shocked and puzzled Laura to the peak; then for some reason, she calmed down significantly.

"Let's go," Williams offered as he stood up, not bothered by all the stares and the words in the hall, and after a few seconds of hesitation, Laura followed suit.
