[Warning! You are entering the portal’s grounds!]
[One adventurer has entered the portal]
[Warning! This place is a Class-C portal. Do you still wish to enter, adventurer?]
[Yes/No]
My system kicked in and delivered me a notification. But since I had seen worse days, I shrugged the alert protocols and smacked the yes button like a pro. Although I wanted to know what might happen if I pressed the [No] button, I would save that thought for later. Curiosity kills the cat, after all.
As soon as I penetrated the portal, everything didn’t change around me. It was the same shrine, with the people traipsing around the streets. But when I called out for their attention, none of them looked at me. It was as if I wasn’t there with them.
“Hello? I’m here! Hey, please don’t ignore m-...”
I tried reaching out to them by touching their shoulders. One guy was in front of me. But by the time my hand should’ve touched the bloke’s body, I slipped right through him. I became the ghoul that I once fought from the previous portal.
“Am I dead?... No. It can’t be. If I am dead, then my system would’ve already notified me. Not unless…”
This was a simulation done inside the portal.
Every portal was unique. It was stated by the adventurers, guilds, and the government that the portals they had experienced weren’t always the ones they had conquered. And it was based on their experiences. The monsters those adventurers fought inside the portal also varied, especially their difficulties. There was a possibility that an evolved form from a basic creature - a goblin from a D-Class portal would appear on the A-Class portal as a hobgoblin. The setting of these portals would also change, evident from the ones I had encountered before. When the masked man killed my parents, we were inside a cave of some sort that barely had any light source inside. And the more recent portal Hina and I stumbled upon in the field akin to a graveyard. And our enemy was a Grim Reaper.
This time around, the place didn’t change. It remained as the busy city where I knew and took it as the dimension inside the portal. Since it had the same scent of smoke everywhere, I knew, paired with the noise coming from the automobiles. There was no doubt about it. The place inside the portal was the real world, mixed with this distorted dimension.
The instructions of every portal were also the same. It only included killing the monsters inside of it within the allotted time. There wasn’t anything like this before. Maybe the one I had entered was something unique that no adventurers had experienced? Or maybe my luck had just run out.
Millions of questions spiralled inside my head, asking about these portals’ endless possibilities. But now was not the time for thinking about the uncertainty. I needed to act quickly to take down the monsters as soon as possible. They may appear soon.
Luckily, this was just a C-Class portal. The guilds and the government stated that C-Class portals contained C-Class monsters. And those low-levelled creatures were weaker compared to the four-legged beast I witnessed or the Grim Reaper I fought with Hina from the previous portal. How bad could this be, right?
[Survive the onslaught provided by the portal for 1 hour. If you are alive, the portal shall grant you the reward.]
[Since the requirement is dangerous despite its class, the portal shall grant you a Class-B item instead of a Class-C weapon.]
[Only one adventurer is present inside the portal]
I was terribly wrong. I jinxed myself. When those panels and instructions appeared before me, my mind shattered into a million pieces. It was something new that I had never witnessed before.
“Survive? Should it be ‘defeat the monsters inside the portal’ kind of thing?”
That question was the only thing that occupied my mind. Even in games, there was only one instruction to beat the game of the challenge faced by the players. However, this occurrence was different. It was as if the game developers or the entity behind the portals mocked the adventurers and played everyone who wished to conquer the portal. It was far worse than an unfinished video game.
And the hours I needed to survive were beyond my expectations. One hour. A lot could happen within an hour, not to mention the monsters I needed to fight and the energy inside of me. Although my sniper didn’t run out of bullets, my mana depended on my energy. And the physical bullets came from the system. If I became exhausted in the middle of this match, the creatures in this portal could turn the table. Even though I was five steps ahead of them, an army of ants could still trample an empire if they tried.
And the worst part was no adventurer could escape this place or enter. I was the only one in this portal, trapped in the outside world. Calling Hina wasn’t an option. Even if I tried, the reception inside the portal was non-existent from my cellular phone. And the only way to free me was to die or beat the portal. I aimed for the former.
But, it was still one hour. I had a big chance that I would survive this fight. If I fought the Grim Reaper of death that out levelled me, maybe I had an option to survive for an hour.
However, there was one odd thing about this dimension. The people roaming around existed in this place. And when I tried touching those humans, my hands never reached them. It was as if I became a ghost of some sort.
“Maybe it’s just a feature of the portal,” I muttered, and shrugged it off. I just hoped it wouldn’t come back to bite me later.
There was also one good thing about this challenge. Instead of getting a C-Class weapon, I would receive B-Class equipment. It would be slightly higher than what I had envisioned. Although the exchange rate wasn’t that high, it was still something that I could scrape by.
Just as my thoughts flooded my brain, several magic circles appeared before me. My map, which I also had with my system, expanded and located every place and building in this area. The setting was the entire city of Tokyo. And I could go wherever I wanted while fighting against whatever would come out of those gates.
And the creatures I looked forward to finally materialised from the summoning rings. The arcanic runes called out to the beasts and invited them in front of me.
Dozens of fiends appeared at my fore. Some monsters had colossal heights and weighed like a whale, while others had the characteristics of a bunny. It was like a salad with pork mixed inside the plate. And that monstrous meal was placed in front of me, forcing me to eat everything the portals had thrown.
My appraisal system had finally kicked in and browsed every beast present up ahead. Thankfully, each beast had an average level of thirty, and the maximum level I saw was a level fifty creature. Considering this place was just a Class-C portal, nothing stronger like the Grim Reaper would show up and kick my ass. The best thing that these weirdoes could do was scratch me.

And the list went on. The levels may vary because those were unreliable numbers that my system couldn’t gauge. Even so, the idea still remained inside my head. ‘These monsters are nothing against me,’ I pondered, and it motivated me to kill those creatures even more.
The portals also included animals that were present in our world. Examples of those were rabid tigers, wolves, bats, and gargantuan insects with slightly higher levels than these otherworldly creatures. None of them were humans among the series of enemies I needed to defeat. Thank god that was the case.
Despite facing an army of beasts, a smile emerged on my face. The trauma that I once had was brushed off as if it was a dream or a horrible nightmare. And the fear I hated became chaos running rampant inside my head.
I thought about killing these creatures and turning them into money. I also had an additional goal. If I became stronger, I could fight the masked man behind the death of my parents. I needed to stumble upon stronger portals to meet him, considering that the portal I accidentally entered when I was a child was an S-Class portal. It was nothing that the world had seen before.
I was overconfident. My ego skyrocketed over the roof after dealing with the ghoul at level one with a couple of bullets. Facing an army of weaklings didn’t scare me. So, I let my guard off and found the laziest way possible for me to finish the portal.
“I should just kill these monsters and earn exp from them! This is just like a farming area, right?” I spoke, and took my first shot at the gorilla with wings. As I had expected, the murder became a breeze.
[Level 20 Winged-Gorilla defeat]
[Experience + 720]
When the bullet pierced through the Winged-Gorilla, the animal plunged to the ground. I foresaw that would happen. These physical and magical bullets took down the terrifying Grim Reaper that was a hundred levels above me. How could I even lose against an army of low-levelled monsters? Logically speaking, that won’t happen.[Level 20 Winged-Gorilla defeated][Experience + 720][Level 15 Goblin defeated][Experience +500]My experience points continued increasing when I killed these three monsters. I even levelled up. Since my status points increased automatically, I didn’t care much about how strong I had become. I just knew that my senses dialled more than an average human. I had forgotten to eat and take a rest. After dealing with the previous portal, I immediately went straight toward a different portal and conquered it. Those portals were inside the city that appeared out of nowhere and away from citizens’ eyes. I had thought that these portals would catch the attention of the Crimson Guild, other guilds, and the government. Luckily for me, they didn’t. This place was my own domain. And the only one that had found it was me, with the help of social media. Since those cybernauts thought the sites introduced in the comment section were fakes, they didn’t bother checking the areas. And once the netizens claimed the portals were real, it was already too late. I had already conquered them.Even though I spent countless hours inside the portals, I had only wasted a few minutes in the real world. And those minutes were the times I was travelling towards the desiMy Sniper System Chapter 21 - The Portal's Deceit

Portals will be differentiated with the use of numbers and classes. The adventurer(s) who have entered the premises shall defeat three of them to exit the area. I could barely glimpse what was in front of me as the instructions piled up, coming from the three portals and how I needed to defeat them. It was exorbitant. My hands never reached or felt anything but air when I tried touching those people, just like what had happened before. But when the monsters attacked them with everything they had, those humans died from a heart attack. They didn’t even perish when the creatures swung its claws and tossed their own bodies at those humans. It was something else that claimed their lives. I tried stopping a couple of monsters within my grasp, but the creatures that slipped through my view hit those humans and continued killing them as if they were nothing but toys. My eyes could only watch the scene unfolding before me. I was the only adventurer inside this place, trying to defeat the portal and defend the people inside and outside the dimension. However, what could one man do against the world? Nothing. ‘There m
A few hours had already passed by since the time I entered this place. I had already beaten a thousand monsters with my sniper. But there was no end to them. No matter how many my bullets penetrated, those magical circles would just respawn those bastards and bombard me. They were like rain. Furthermore, every time I killed a few hundred more of them within a minute, those beast would kill a dozen humans themselves. And the cycle continued. Unfortunately, as the time limit grew closer, dead humans increased. But my enemies remained infinite, even though my goal was to eliminate them. It was as if I got scammed by the portals. Fortunately, the people within the city evacuated for the time being. After four hours of protecting the area, the adventurers led the people to a different site, far from where I stood. A sigh of relief escaped from my mouth, knowing th
I shouldn’t be the one to help these people. I was an adventurer who had my own problems that I needed to solve, especially with money. So why would I care if these people would die because of those monsters and the portals? It should’ve been none of my concerns. However, my human instincts never let me turn a blind eye to the people dying outside the portal. When I fought against that horde of monsters, two hobgoblins targeted two families at once. On my right side was a father and his son, and on the other area was a mother caressing her baby in her arms. Both quivered in fear as the monster approached their figure. I, who was one person alone, had to choose which family would survive.Life was a bit unfair. Why did I have this power to govern who lives and who doesn’t? It was a heavy burden I carried and a responsibility unbefitting for me.
I used the rest of my minutes to study the attack pattern of this boss. Since these portals followed the rules of games, every monster had its attack patterns. Hobgoblins moved like they carried sands in their muscles, making their movements sluggish but impactful when they landed. The ideal way to deal with them was fast bullet attacks that would surprise the living shit out of those ugly-looking hobgoblins. Dodging their attacks would be a walk in the park, especially if I had my sixth sense activated at any time. Goblins were a different story. They ran as fast as an energetic child and dealt damage akin to an inexperienced martial artist. Dealing with them was a pain in the ass. The only thing that I had to do was aim my sniper at any goblin I saw and eliminate them one bullet at a time. There was no point in evading the goblin’s attacks, considering the damage dealt by these nuisances was nonexistent against my attire. Golems were slower th
Another ten minutes passed, yet I still couldn’t crack the code. Even though my magical bullets hit my target, the Wyvern remained unrivalled compared to my sniper. The winged beast was faster than me and reacted to every shot I threw at it. That monster could hit me within one strike, while I needed over fifty to bring that bastard down. It was as if I was meant to lose this fight.Forty minutes remained on my clock. It wasn’t a lot of time that I could use against the Wyvern, but I finally studied its attack patterns. Since this winged reptile acted like a monstrous beast known to humans, it had artificial emotions. Every time I swerved the Wyvern’s strikes, the flying creature would change its course and try it again. However, this time, the Wyvern would find a different angle. The unpredictability of my opponent became the Wyvern’s g

Although magic particles were different from real nourishments, it was enough to keep me functional. And my body was still in top shape. I also forced myself to sleep only for an hour and wake up dodging those projectiles for the umpteenth time. There was nothing inside my mind but evading these ambushes, hoping I could, at least, strike back with my rifle. But the time never arrived. When I was six years old. I didn’t need money, a lavish life, or things that I could call mine. There was only one thing I wanted, and that was my parents. I wanted them to live. But with one sudden moment, my wish turned around and burned me alive. My parents were killed by monsters, not humans. The fiend was around a hundred feet tall, and the village we were living in took the invasion. They were reptiles. These monsters had the shape of a dragon, which was technically a lizard with wings. According to the internet, unidentified beasts kept appearing from nowhere, and there were others who fought against them. Those individuals were not the police officers. I believed they were called guilds. And as I glanced around me, the news and other people claimed that t

Hina’s Perspective _____________________ “Come with me.” With one phrase, the masked man offered his hand to me. He used his other hand to lift Aoi’s body and cast a spell that changed our surroundings. “I’ll show you something.” Obsidian showed no signs of hostility. And the voice behind the masked man soothed my ears as if it was some sort of music with perfect beat and lyrics. I gazed at the man’s hand, wondering if I should take it. I had seen something like this before. But something was off. And at the same time, there was a peculiar feeling of calm and genuineness. He almost reminded me of my brother. In spite of these feelings twirling inside my mind, I shook my head and answered, “I don’t… want to... I won’t leave…. My brother! You… Want… to kill him… I’ll…. Stay by…. His side…. As I glanced on my side, Hina still wanted to fight. She stood up and used the rock beside him, but her legs kept shaking as if an earthquake struck us. But the ground remained still. Time wasn’t on our side. Obsidian tried hitting us with his sniper, but Hina continued lifting me up and creating walls in front of me. It was as if she was reading my movements. When the masked man pulled the trigger and launched a set of bullets in my direction, I went to the side despite having no platform for me to step on. But I trusted my sister. By the time I jumped above ground, I trusted my instincts and rolled on the side. Like I had said, there was no ground to catch me when I fell. But as soon as I gyrated my body, a floor made of soil immediately materialised and cushioned my feet. The next thing I knew, I tumbled to the side and evaded almost every bullet coming in my way. The shells that I couldn’t dodge still didn’t hit me. The moment those leads from the masked man could take me out, Hina summoned a wall in front of me and protected my face.I didn’t have the time to thank my sister and carried onwards with the fight.
