“This is just in; millions of portals have appeared throughout the city of Tokyo, Japan, and other countries in the entire world! According to the United Nations, every country is fighting back against the portals and the creatures summoned inside them. And the government has finally disclosed the existence of monsters residing in these entryways and adventurers! Adventurers are people with awakened powers, be it super strength, speed, intelligence, or taming beasts. The adventurer’s guild, specifically Crimson, and the prime minister, would like to recruit talented individuals to fight back against these portals wreaking havoc in our city! Anyone with these powers is automatically qualified to conquer dungeons and retrieve the treasure living in these portals. Please be advised that every treasure the guild receives shall be handsomely rewarded! Changing this instruction will be given on further notice.”
Those were the words coming out from the television inside the hospital room where Hina’s parents rested. But the whimpering voice of Hina occluded the sounds beside me. She still couldn’t believe everything that had happened to us. It was all too fast. Thankfully, I was there with her and saved her from despair… just like Hina had saved me.
After our solemn conversation, Hina returned to her room and slept beside her unconscious parents as soon as she rested her face. This time, it was real. Her snores were my evidence, and Hina’s exhausted look carved on her face. She was like an angel in disguise and had finally rested after a tiring day of suffering.
I made a promise to Hina. And it was the reason Hina could silently sleep as she placed her trust in my words. If I said something to her, I would do it. It was what Hina had mentioned to me a while ago. Hina said that she learned this character from me, her older brother. After countless years, how could I turn down my sister, who just called me her brother?
But I never planned on taking a part-time job to pay for the hospital bills. Even if I could, the paycheck I would receive from working at a convenience store wouldn’t make it within a week. It would be insufficient for a student. I needed to earn at least one hundred thousand yen or even more to extend Hina’s parents’ stay in the hospital for at least one month.
And the only thing that I could do was…
“The news… It said something about the treasures and trading them for money.” Desperate times called for desperate measures.
Fortunately, the news earlier ignited an idea inside my head. I used my phone while running outside the hospital. I found a bench and sat for the time being, and browsed what I could find about these portals and their whereabouts. The news spread like wildfire, so using the internet was a wise decision.
The outside world was still the same. When I got out of the hospital, dozens of ambulances rushed elsewhere and brought the wounded inside the emergency department. Hundreds of patients went in and out of the door. Some of them cried, while others had already lost hope inside their eyes. I knew, because I once felt that agony.
It was as dark as ever, and the twinkling stars from above were the only light source that guided my path. The moon wasn’t here with me. Instead, there were magical circles in the air and purple smoke, indicating the existence of these portals surrounding the city. There was not a single place people could hide, except behind the adventurer’s backs. Luckily, no monsters wandered in my vicinity. As stated by the government, adventurers heavily protected hospitals and remained distant from the portals. However, some places weren’t as lucky as ours. They felt doom.
As I scrolled through the internet, the news I heard earlier popped up a second time. The article mentioned that adventurers and the army had already engaged with these portals and studied their content and behaviour. Our government still knew nothing about these gates, which led to the open attack of talented individuals or adventurers.
I was one of those gifted individuals. And my power was a system, amplified with my sniper class and rifle as my weapon. There was still no list of superpowers that the adventurers received here on social media, but mine could be a unique one. Midori had mentioned some to me before, but I never knew and cared about it. I didn’t care if my power was exceptional. All that mattered right now was retrieving the treasure inside a portal, exchanging it for money, and ultimately using the fund to pay the hospital bills.
It was as if I had hit the winning lottery numbers. After thirty minutes of staring at my phone, I finally caught one untouched portal that the adventurers had never explored. Everyone who saw it posted it on a social media application, which helped me locate it. It was not far from here.
I stood from the bench and tracked down the portal-sighting someone marked on the internet. Although the information received from these sights was unreliable, it was worth the shot. The treasures could be exchanged for a million yen. I expected everyone who had powers to run straight to a portal if word came out. So I had to use this advantage and collect as many treasures as possible before they prohibited anyone from entering the portals.
“Treasures can only be obtained once you finish the portal…. As soon as you enter one, instructions will appear on how to defeat the portal. If you successfully beat the portal, the gate would reward you. If you don’t, you may be kicked out and try again. But if you have it worst and the portal you’re conquering is a B-class portal and above, you may… die.” Someone with an unknown username had narrated everything that person knew about portals. And some of their commenters supported the idea. “I saw it around a playground. It’s right between the space of a slide, right beside the swing and the seesaw. You won’t miss it.”
These details were accurate from what I could remember. I had already entered two portals. And each portal I experienced had these instructions to beat it. As long as the adventurer was skilled, it would be easy to take away the treasure from the portal. But if the adventurer were inexperienced, the portals would claim those novice’s lives.
It was a thirty-minute walk, but I eventually reached my destination. As soon as I arrived, the walls and landmarks left by the commenter were spot on. The place was a playground meant for kids, but no children were playing in the meantime. How could they, especially after the incidents of these portals?
There was nobody on the playground besides me. The traffic was on the main road and the rest of the people were staying inside a shelter or a hospital. No one would dare visit this place, which was what I wanted.
Since it had come to this, I summoned my system and changed my attire. It also materialised my weapon, which I had equipped earlier. A faint life glowed around my body and replaced my student uniform with the white cloak with sapphire hues. This feeling wasn’t as exciting as I thought it would be.
“There’s really a portal right here,” I mumbled, while I gazed at the magic circle just between the hole from the slide.
It was what the commenter had mentioned. Two golden hues swirled on the side as the light violet coloured smoke enveloped my vicinity. Compared to the ones I had seen before, this portal looked like it wasn’t something special.
But my portal told me otherwise.
[Warning, you are entering a class B portal up ahead. Do you still wish to breach the portal?]
[Yes]
[No]
A panel popped up in front of me, asking the same question I wanted to ask. Of course, I wanted to enter inside and take the treasure for myself. It would be helpful if I could. And that reason alone was enough to steel my courage and press the [Yes] button offered by my system.
[Warning! Your level is too low for the portal. Do you still wish to proceed?]
Another notification appeared before me, this time hindering me from entering. My system explained that this portal was beyond my level and experience as a novice adventurer. However, what choice did I have? And I couldn’t choose the problems that life handed on my plate, even if I didn’t want any of them. So I pressed yes for the second time.
[Very well, adventurer. May luck guide you through your endeavour.]
As soon as the system accepted my answer, the world changed before me. I had no idea what happened, but it appeared that I was inside the portal and left the Earth’s premises. This place was in a whole different dimension. It was what I had experienced when a portal appeared twice in front of me and devoured my family and the students.
When I got sucked inside the portal, another panel appeared. It didn’t come from my system. It was a box that belonged to the portal and gave me instructions on defeating it.
[Two adventurers have entered the class B portal.]
[Quest: Defeat the monster residing in this place.]
[Reward: Ruined Sword (Rare)]
There it was; my first portal that I needed to conquer…
[Two adventurers have entered the class B portal.] [Quest: Defeat the monster residing in this place.] [Reward: Ruined Sword (Rare)] ‘Two adventurers? Why are there two people inside the portal? It must’ve been a bystander that got lost on their way back or someone who has died recently,’ I thought, while looking at the panel. And it was the most reasonable explanation behind the panel’s description. Like any other game-like feature, the system might have experienced a bug in the portal. But the reward that the commenters mentioned was real. Defeating the monster would grant me the [Ruined Sword], which the portal had labelled as something rare for its quality. All I had to do was to defeat the monster guarding this port
I couldn’t leave a dent against the monster, no matter what I did. There was no way for me to use my sniper, thanks to traumatising memory haunting my head. So I threw rocks at the ghoul. It was my only chance to deal with minor damage and prolong the inevitable death waiting for my soul. I wasn’t expecting anything, so the pebbles I hurled dealt no damage to the ghoul. When the Grim Reaper finally fought back, the ghoul swung his weapon and hit my right arm. I could still use my hand, but blood flowed from my shoulders and created a pool of blood beside my feet. I didn’t suffer any broken bones, but I wasn’t unscathed either.“Fuck… if this continues, I will die.”I gave up on everything before. However, I promised Hina to return home and pay the hospital bills. She was waiting for me. After ten years, Hina finally ca
Did I really want this to end? If it was, what was Midori’s sacrifice, then? It was all for nothing…If I gave up right now, Hina and her parents would die. They were the ones who took care of me as if I was their child. Why would I even let this happen?Of course, I wouldn’t. Of course, I wanted to live for another day and hear my step-sister call me her brother. I wished to save them. Every cell inside my body hollered the same thing again, and again, and again, and again, and again. It was never-ending. And all I had to do was…“Pull this trigger.”The second I mustered my courage, I carried my sniper and aimed my scope at the Grim Reaper. I placed my trauma aside and vowed to save Hina. She was everything I had. This family gave

“I’m here to exchange an item for money.”I didn’t run around the bush and tell them what I wanted. The receptionist, who had an uninterested look despite her optimistic behaviour, tilted her head and opened her mouth. While conversing with me, the girl entertained the few strong-looking adventures beside her. Those were the ones who leered at the receptionist, maybe thinking about filthy things to do with her. I didn’t know. I was quick to judge and trusted my instincts. And that one guy who had been looking at the woman’s chest said it all.“Fine. Just hand out the treasure, and a staff working here would appraise it for the guild. The treasure exchange currency is here,” the girl said, and handed me a clipboard. “Whatever’s written there on that piece of paper is the absolute price of each treasure.
“To formally start our business, let me reintroduce myself. My name is Sakamaki, Kei. As the receptionist mentioned, I am the right-hand secretary and one and only Appraiser for Crimson Guild. I have the ability to see through objects and describe them in detail, especially items that came from portals,” Kei narrated, as he made himself comfortable with the chair and crossed his legs. “Before we can hand you out the money, I would first ask you a set of questions. I know that you and your sister insist that you’ve conquered the portal by yourselves, and we respect that. But, just like any other business, we need to know more information than what you’ve provided us.”“My name is Nakamura, Aoi. This is Amamiya, Hina. She’s my step-sister," I introduced myself, in case of Kei asking me about my sister's name and mine. Within a few hours, we finally arrived inside the medical building. The night finally came, and the moon and stars twinkled above the sky. Everything was silent. But the building’s insides buzzed as if they were bees inside a hive, flying to one place after another. It was a hectic day, especially when the portals arrived and wreaked havoc across the world. As we entered the busy hallway, the doctors and nurses exchanged looks when they saw our appearance. It was as if they had seen a ghost. Those medical staff also mumbled to each other, with their eyes slanted, and sent question marks in our direction. I had enough of this gossip, so I went directly toward a doctor and asked the topic behind their conversation. “What’s going on? We plan on paying the hospital bills today. I-I have the money right here. If thereMy Sniper System Chapter 16 - Consequences and Reward
“This is Tokyo, Japan’s leading news station. And we are bringing you the hottest news. The Crimson Guild and the prime minister had a long discussion last night about the portals and the adventurers. Portals are the swirling ball of light that materialised in our streets and became gateways to different dimensions. Adventurers are people who are gifted with powers and fight for the country’s safety and interest. Crimson Guild is the number one Guild in the world that has offered help to Japan and the United Nations. Thousands of people had already been claimed by the portals when they arrived. And according to the prime minister and the Crimson Guild, they cannot ignore the threat of the increasing numbers of people getting killed by these portals. After the fruitful meeting, the Crimson Guild and the prime minister of Japan have announced that adventurers who are willing to help the citizens are now invited to join guilds and parti

How many days had it been since the time I had been luring and fighting these beasts? Two months? No. Two months were short in my calendar. If I had to guess it right, I was up here for eight months fighting and evading these monsters. I fed myself with arcane from my surroundings and made it my nutrition. Although magic particles were different from real nourishments, it was enough to keep me functional. And my body was still in top shape. I also forced myself to sleep only for an hour and wake up dodging those projectiles for the umpteenth time. There was nothing inside my mind but evading these ambushes, hoping I could, at least, strike back with my rifle. But the time never arrived. The lizards weren’t the only creatures present in my vicinity. There were more of them. If I had to name a few, t

Volume 3 - Epilogue Aoi Two’s Perspective (not the original Aoi, but the other one who lived in a different yet similar life.) __________________________________ As far as I remembered, my parents died when I was little. When I was six years old. I didn’t need money, a lavish life, or things that I could call mine. There was only one thing I wanted, and that was my parents. I wanted them to live. But with one sudden moment, my wish turned around and burned me alive. My parents were killed by monsters, not humans. The fiend was around a hundred feet tall, and the village we were living in took the invasion. They were reptiles. These monsters had the shape of a dragon, which was technically a lizard with wings. According to the internet, unidentified beasts kept appearing from nowhere, and there were others who fought against them. Those individuals were not the police officers. I believed they were called guilds. And as I glanced around me, the news and other people claimed that t

Hina’s Perspective_____________________“It’s okay… Don’t cry. There, there…. It’s going to be okay… It’s going to be alright….”And then, I said the words. “I forgive you… I forgive you, Aoi… You don’t have to cry anymore… It’s going to be okay…”I said the words Aoi wanted to hear. Even though he was Obsidian, the face of my brother carved itself on the man beside me. It was as if Aoi two was a dog barking and biting people left and right only to realise he needed someone’s help… He needed my help. And now he had faced his fear and listened to the words Aoi two wanted to hear, his ears calmed down. His ears discerned what was important.‘But what now? What are we going to do now?’ I thought, and looked at the downcasted face of Aoi two. As if knowing the question inside my head, Aoi two returned my gaze and uttered, “I know… you are confused. But we don’t have much time now. As soon as I fought Aoi in this world, the entities behind these portals were already high on alert. And I
Hina’s Perspective _____________________ “Come with me.” With one phrase, the masked man offered his hand to me. He used his other hand to lift Aoi’s body and cast a spell that changed our surroundings. “I’ll show you something.” Obsidian showed no signs of hostility. And the voice behind the masked man soothed my ears as if it was some sort of music with perfect beat and lyrics. I gazed at the man’s hand, wondering if I should take it. I had seen something like this before. But something was off. And at the same time, there was a peculiar feeling of calm and genuineness. He almost reminded me of my brother. In spite of these feelings twirling inside my mind, I shook my head and answered, “I don’t… want to... I won’t leave…. My brother! You… Want… to kill him… I’ll…. Stay by…. His side…. Until you… can kill me…” There was a chance that the masked man wanted to pull me apart from Aoi. And I never wanted that to happen. The moment the masked man heard my words for the umpteenth ti
Hina’s Perspective_____________________All my life, Aoi did nothing but help me with my problems, regardless if it involved him or me. As long as he noticed, which he always did, my brother would rush towards me and help. Aoi really forced himself so hard until he could see me smile. And even though I pushed him countless times, he continued crawling his way back in my arms. I could still remember those days when we were together, especially when these portals hadn’t shown up. Life was simple back then. If only Aoi’s parents didn’t die, maybe he could’ve lived the life he deserved. But his life was taken away by a murderer and the portal. And now, we were given the chance to confront the man who stole his life away. But even so, we couldn’t defeat him. I… couldn’t do a thing. As I glanced on my side, Hina still wanted to fight. She stood up and used the rock beside him, but her legs kept shaking as if an earthquake struck us. But the ground remained still. There was no earthquake. And when I appraised her status, my system described her with a fatigue ailment in addition to her drained mana right beside his health bar.[Iron Maiden has been deactivated. Obsidian is too powerful to be compressed!]Those were the words that marked our doom. The moment Obsidian broke free from the [Iron Maiden] all hope was lost. I had no idea how to win now, especially when my sister was on the ground. She couldn’t me right now. But Hina had already assisted me until her body fell on the ground. Although she desperately forced herself to move and stand with the help of a rock, Hina couldn’t cast any more magic and would remain sluggish until she could recover her mana. Obsidian stood on the other side of the map, unscathed and unbothered from the spell. The [Iron Maiden] wa
Time wasn’t on our side. Obsidian tried hitting us with his sniper, but Hina continued lifting me up and creating walls in front of me. It was as if she was reading my movements. When the masked man pulled the trigger and launched a set of bullets in my direction, I went to the side despite having no platform for me to step on. But I trusted my sister. By the time I jumped above ground, I trusted my instincts and rolled on the side. Like I had said, there was no ground to catch me when I fell. But as soon as I gyrated my body, a floor made of soil immediately materialised and cushioned my feet. The next thing I knew, I tumbled to the side and evaded almost every bullet coming in my way. The shells that I couldn’t dodge still didn’t hit me. The moment those leads from the masked man could take me out, Hina summoned a wall in front of me and protected my face.I didn’t have the time to thank my sister and carried onwards with the fight. Time was also our enemy. So when I found an open
