Chapter 16: Shadow Wolves

Aldric removed the door he made and found it clean, without any blood on it, as he expected.

The poisons and venoms were all used up, too.

Aldric maintained his skill 'Five Senses Super-enhancement' throughout the night just to be careful since he knew that the night would be long and he was worried that high-level monsters would appear and the door might not hold up, but it proved effective.

‘Maybe there's no high-level monsters last night and only weak ones?’

The goblins said that low-level monsters don't have the ability to think and will just attack anyone they see so the weak monsters mindlessly attack the door, mistaking it for Aldric due to the scent of his blood.

Aldric leveled up multiple times, but it eventually plateaued.

The monsters were so low-level that further advancement became challenging.

He needs to hunt a stronger monster for him to level up again.

''No, blood and no bodies. It was the same with the spider last time, too. When its corpse hit the sun, not even its blood was left. All of it burned. I didn't really question it at that time because I was too preoccupied but I wonder if the Queen told us everything about this world or if that bitch is hiding something she doesn't want us to know?'

Although the Queen explained what happened to this world, Aldric was not wholly convinced that what the Queen said was the whole truth.

They were also the heroes who died killing the Demon King. Aldric wanted to know more about them, where they came from, and why all of them ended up having the same fate?

Aldric looked at his arms. They were all from the same person, the Hero Lucien Dubois, and Aldric had already tested its capabilities.

'I'm certain they possessed great strength. Why did none of them manage to survive, at the very least?'

"Your Highness?" Lavena interrupted his thought, bringing him back to reality.

He realized that all the goblins were staring at him.

"Is something wrong, Your Highness?" Lavena asked once again as she tilted her head adorably.

"There is nothing," Aldric answered as he shook his head and put the door in his inventory.

"I see." Lavena was not wholly convinced but didn't ask more. "The wolves seemed to have returned from their hunt, Your Highness."

Lavena was looking at Aldric's back, and Aldric followed her gaze to see the wolves, and as soon as he did, his eyes widened. Again.

'How the hell did naming a monster unlock this evolution?' was Aldric's honest reaction. 'No wonder I lost a lot of my skills. I even depleted all my mana by naming them. Fortunately, it got resolved by some sleep.'

The shadow wolves, like their name, were clocked in shadows.

Like he remembered they were so many of them. It was reasonable that he got a headache from naming all of them.

The wolves' eyes were pierced through the obscurity with an otherworldly glow, revealing intelligence that they didn't have before.

Even though the shadows were covering their whole body, Aldric was able to see some markings that looked like bones, however as Aldric took a closer look, he realized that they were actual bones that were coming out of their body!

The bones protruded from their legs, and tails. On their spine were bones protruded like the serrated edges of a forsaken crown. They contrast with the dark fur and create a striking visual effect.

'Their bodies and faces were definitely deformed before but now looked like completely different creatures. I guess I shouldn't be this shocked after seeing the goblins.'

The wolves were running at the speed of light. A normal person would not be able to see them, but Aldric could see their every move thanks to his skills and him being stronger than them.

Because he tends to overthink, he always keeps his skills activited.

Although it consumes a lot of mana, it wouldn't matter for him.

They were fast, and the Kijins could only see blurs of shadowy forms before the wolves materialized in front of them.

They all unconsciously stepped back except for Lavena, who stood at Aldric's side, ready to attack the wolves if they dared do something to Aldric.

They still fear and held a grudge towards the wolves because although they don't look like Cursed Monsters anymore and they feel different, for them, they are still the same as the monsters who attacked their village.

They wouldn't let their guard down so simply. They have the urge to attack them, but they hold them down.

Like them, the wolves were their King's subjects now, and attacking them without Aldric's command would be treason.

Aldric also noticed this but didn't say anything. He thought that it was only normal dor goblin to react such way.

He also finds it strange for the wolves to be tamed so easily, but naming them makes Aldric certain of their loyalty. After naming them, he felt a strange connection to the goblins and the wolves.

As they approach, Aldric could feel that they have become completely different creatures.

The transformation was indeed remarkable, and Aldric couldn't help but be impressed by the enhanced abilities granted to them.

'Losing my skills is worth it, after all.' After having that thought, Aldric thought of another thing. 'Is it possible that they can also talk now?'

Aldric glanced at the wolf who was in the middle and was clearly much bigger than everyone.

'If I remember right… Did I not name him Amarok?'

An idea popped like a spark in Aldric's mind. He focused on Amarok, the central and larger shadow wolf.

"Amarok," Aldric addressed, his voice carrying a commanding tone. "Can you speak now?"

Amarok inclined his head, a gesture that resembled a nod.

Then, a deep and resonant voice echoed.

"Yes, Your Highness."

Amarok answered, wagging his tail like a puppy.

This action made Aldric's hair stand up. It was really strange for a wolf, especially one of such size and presence, to exhibit such canine-like behavior.

Lavena and the Kijins were shocked. Disbelief colored their faces.

"T-They can talk?" Grom's body was shaking from shock, and the same was for the others. "T-The curses… they are talking!"

"H-How is this possible?" Lavena unconsciously said her thoughts out loud.

They deemed these monsters as Curses, who come out of a Gate, demonic monsters who suddenly appeared out of nowhere, wreaking havoc in their world.

However, the wolves seemed to not mind their reactions as they remained completely still, and Amarok was still wagging his tail. The bones protruding from his tail didn't look that scary anymore for Aldric.

"With our evolution, we have gained the skill, 'Beast Tongue'. It is a skill that you bestowed us upon naming us, Your Highness," Amarok added, his deep voice echoed once more.

"So, 'Beast Tongue' allows you to speak and understand our language?" Aldric asked.

"Yes, Your Highness," affirmed Amarok.

'I have a skill like that? But… wait…'

"I only have one skill, and yet how come all the others got the skill, too?" Aldric asked.

"Your Highness! To answer your question, my brethren and I are connected together," Amarok replied excitedly. "We are one. As we evolved into a new being, we have also gained a mind, Your Highness."

'A new being? Mind? I don't understand what he is talking about at all. Appraisal.'

'He got some of my skills, and the same is for the others, but they have weaker skills compared to Amarok. I guess it's because he is the Alpha, but the skills they got from me really suit their new form. I wonder if my skills influenced their evolution?'

Aldric really never picked the skills he wanted and just let the system buy everything, but maybe he should have been careful. He wouldn't know if they would be dangerous or beneficial.

'I should really be careful next time!”

Putting that thought aside, Aldric observed the other wolves, other than them being slightly smaller and stronger than Amarok. There was nothing different from their physical appearance.

'Seeing the Goblin's reaction, I can see that this is not normal at all. That's right, these guys are Cursed Monsters… I find it strange, too.'

"I thought that you all went for a hunt? Why have you not brought anything for our King?"

Aldric glanced at Lavena, who spoke with a smug tone while crossing her arms. It was obvious in her expression that she hated the wolves.

'Hunt? Now that she mentioned it. I don't see anything. Were they unsuccessful?'

"Yes, Queen Consort Lavena, but since we don't want to venture too far without His Highness's permission, we were unsuccessful with our hunt," Amarok replied, sounding disappointed.

"Q-Queen Consort?" Lavena's astonishment was obvious as a grin slowly formed on her seductive lips, and her cheeks reddened. "Tee-hee-hee! Y-You sure know how to please someone. Ha-Ha! I acknowledge you!"

Lavena's hatred for the wolves was gone immediately.

Aldric acted as if he didn't see this. This was the change that evolution brought for him—he have to get used to it.

"What do you mean unsuccessful? Did you not find any Gila Monsters?" Aldric asked, confused, and didn't mind Lavena, who was squirming and giggling.

'The wolves ventured far enough for them to see Gila Monsters. How were they unsuccessful? This area is filled with them!'

The wolves seemed to be bewildered by Aldric's question.

"No, Your Highness, we didn't find any at all. We didn't sense any presence either."

Aldric was about to ask another question when he saw Lavena raising her hand like a student in a classroom.

Aldric nodded, giving her a permission to talk.

"Your Highness, it might be because of you."

"Because of me?”
