Frank managed to get a shot eye after going through a series of thoughts in his mind. He woke up the next morning to the scent of a nice meal, it didn't take him long to discover where the scent was coming from as it was strong on his nose.
He got up to see his mom already having her breakfast while his own was on the floor.
"You woke up just in time for your breakfast," Jessica said.
Frank looked at the food on the floor and the one that his mother was eating, it looked nothing like what the soldiers managed to serve them here and that scent he had not perceived for a week now.
"Did you make this mom?" Frank asked although he already knew the answer.
"Yes," She nodded. "David helped me get some foodstuffs for me after I told him that the food we got here wasn't good for my condition."
David was the soldier who had helped them the day his mother got hurt and after that day he was closer to them and helped them in certain situations just like he did this morning.
"And you prepared it?"
She nodded and continued with her breakfast.
Watching her eat Frank felt bad, even in her condition she was still looking for the best way to make him comfortable. She had gone out this morning with her wounded leg to make sure that he didn't just have any breakfast but a good one.
Frank ate up his breakfast and quickly rushed outside to join his mates on the normal chores which they did around the camp.
Every child or teenager in the camp was assigned different chores to do and today it was Frank's turn to get rid of all the refuse in the camp but he wasn't doing this alone.
The refuse disposal chore was always given to two boys and today Frank was paired with a boy named Arnold.
Arnold was a little shorter than Luis, appeared leaner than him, and had curly black hair. Another thing to note about him was the glasses he put on.
One of the things that caused Frank's loneliness here was that none of his friends or to be precise none of his mates that he knew at their own part of Marble town was here, the camp wasn't that large so finding people wasn't by any means tedious.
The two teenagers met the soldier responsible for supervising chores and he handed them both the plack plastic bags required for picking the refuse.
"Here you go, make sure to do a good job or you can just abandon the whole thing as those guys did." The soldier said with a menacing voice as he pointed at two teenagers who were by the side.
The two teenagers were doing push-ups and were clearly exhausted but anytime they went down and took long in getting the soldier standing over them would whip them.
The sight was a cruel one for Frank and Arnold, who were now questioning if the soldiers were here to protect them or bully them.
The parents couldn't complain about the unwholesome way the children were treated because they were afraid the soldiers would leave if they did.
"Why do we have to pick up other people's trash? Can't they just drop these bags in all the tents and have the people throw out their trash." Frank grumbled as they walked through the camp.
Arnold was quite the quiet one and didn't reply to his grumblings but he did say something in his mind.
'Because the bags won't be enough.'
They began their chore going from house to house picking up trash cans gotten from the canned food the soldiers served and then plastic containers there were even some of these things outside.
The picking stage was always the easy part but dumping wasn't a fun thing at all, they had to walk what looked like one and a half kilometers to a small forest and dump the trash there.
Frank didn't find the thing scary on their way there despite the beasts lurking around, that was until the sun got covered by Gray clouds, the whole cloud was covered by Gray clouds now which was a sign that the rain would soon come down.
"We have to hurry," Frank told Arnold as he increased his pace, but looking at the small forest with the darkness it appeared scary and all Frank wanted to do was dump the refuse and return as quickly as possible.
Frank and Arnold got to the forest and it didn't take them long to see where the other kids had been dumping their own refuse.
The sky growled and soon the sound of thunder was heard, almost making Arnold jump up in fear.
"Calm down it's just thunder," Frank told him as he started pouring out the contents of his bag.
Arnold got a hold of himself and joined Frank in emptying his bag.
While they were doing that Frank heard a little growl which made him stop what he was doing.
"Was that you?" He asked.
"No," Arnold said, shaking his head.
He heard the growl again but this time it was a little louder that even Arnold heard it.
"What was that?" Arnold stuttered.
"Shhhh," Frank said, placing his finger in between his lips.
He gestured to Arnold to continue pouring out his trash but to do it slowly.
They had emptied both of their bags when they heard the growl again but this time it was closer.
"Arnold," Frank whispered.
"Yes,"
"I think we should run." He whispered.
Arnold nodded but before he knew it Frank had already taken to his heels and he had no option but to follow behind.
Frank continued running even though they were out of the forest until he got tired and sat on the floor against his will.
Arnold soon caught up to him and joined him on the floor, he was seriously panting.
While the two were trying to catch their breaths they began to feel water droplets falling on them and looking up they could see that the rain had already started coming down.
"We should start heading back before that rain starts with full force," Frank said and slowly got up, but it was already late as the droplets soon increased to large drops and now they were having a shower.
The two managed to pull themselves across the rain back to the camp and when they got there they could hear the wailing coming from a woman, it was so loud that it could be heard clearly even in the loud rain.
"Don't take him there, he can't do anything, he's just a child." The woman said.
She was holding on to a soldier who was trying to pull himself free.
"We are losing our men to those beasts, we need people to help clear them up or they will come here and kill you all." The soldier explained.
Before the woman could say another thing the soldier pulled himself and the woman with nothing else to do fell on the floor and broke down in tears.
Frank and Arnold had arrived in time to see everything happen unaware that they were about to become the next victims.
"We found two more, lieutenant." Frank heard someone say behind him and before he knew it the person had grabbed him on his arm, the same was also done to Arnold by another person.
"Let go of me." Frank tried to resist but he was met with a slap that resounded in the rain.
"Both of you are coming to the battlefield with us."
Going to the battlefield to fight those beasts, this was what Frank feared most in this chaotic world.
There was only one person who Frank believed could get him out of the current situation he was in now but when he searched through the soldiers present there with his eyes David was nowhere to be found. The slap had immediately subdued the zeal Frank had to prove any resistance and Arnold who had seen his mate receive couldn't see himself putting up any form of resistance.Frank wanted to scream, maybe David would hear him from the other side of the camp and come save him but one thing was keeping him from doing that and that was because he doubted that David might be able to do anything. If he remembered correctly David was only a sergeant while the man holding his arm had just referred to one of the soldiers there as a lieutenant.Frank, Arnold, and the other kids who the soldiers had with them had no choice but to go along with what the soldiers had planned for them. The
The beast was running towards the group without slowing down but Roger wasn't going to shoot as he quickly went into the van's front seat to get something.Don shot and shot but the beast jumped from side to side avoiding every bullet, soon the other soldiers joined in and with their combined effort were able to get shots on target on the beast but it still wasn't enough to stop the beast as it continued running forward without slowing down."Are you guys stupid? If you don't shoot that thing then you'll all die!" One of the soldiers turned to the kids to say this but still, it wasn't enough to make them do anything."How come all the kids here are cowards? I wasn't this cowardly as a child." The soldier grumbled as he continued shooting at the beast. With the beast getting closer now the soldiers continued shooting until when they pulled the trigger and nothing happened."

Frank had different thoughts running in his mind of what might have happened to Arnold, did he run away? But that wouldn't be possible given that the whole area was a wasteland and he would get caught by a beast. Was he carried away by a beast? That he wasn't sure of but it didn't look like any of the beasts had escaped. Maybe he was torn to shreds, this was the most possible to be the case given that his body couldn't be found anywhere around the area. While Frank was in the middle of his thoughts he began to hear slight metallic sounds coming from the van. He slowly walked to the van and was standing in front of the back door now. He was still hearing the sound but it sounded like whatever that was inside was trying to adjust its position rather than looking for a way out. He had an idea who or what was in there as he placed his hands on the door but he just wis
Frank could feel his heartbeat slowing down and weakening as the vehicle drove through the wasteland. 'What is this?' He wanted to scream but just didn't have the strength to do that. "Are you okay?" Arnold turned to him. He was struggling with his breathing now and was beginning to sweat. "I don't think I…." His breath was obstructing his speech. "I don't think I… can keep up any longer." That was the last thing he remembered saying before slumping on the car seat. The teenager woke up to find himself in their tent with his mother sleeping peacefully beside him. Arnold wasn't looking good at all, his eyes were looking dead as usual, his hair was all messed up with stains all over his blue shirt and he looked paler than the last time Frank saw him. 'How Come he's like this? it's only been a few hours since we came back from that battle.' Frank thought unaware that he had been out throughout the time they returned yesterday and had just woken up this morning. "Hey Arnold," Frank said as he stepped closer to him. "Hi, Frank." He said with a forced smile and change continued to pull the bag along with him. "Hey wait, where are you heading to?" "To dispose of the refuse." He stopped before saying that. "Which soldier sent you to dispose of the refuse alone?" "It wasn't a soldier," Arnold said, shaking his head. "Then who?" Frank asked.
[ Speed points: 5/50 ] Frank came to a halt as he saw his speed points drop to a low number, there was no need to worry as he needed to just walk a few meters to get to the camp now. [ Superspeed deactivated ] 'This ability is a real lifesaver.' He thought as he looked ahead. [ Stats ] [ Strength: 5 ] [ Endurance: 4 ] [ Dexterity: 9 ] 'I had gotten two points in dexterity after killing four of those foxes, foxes are known for being quick and agile, and killing them had given me stat points in dexterity.' Frank had just figured out how he got stat points, his stat points allocation worked, it was based on the physical properties of the beast, he had gotten one point in strength after killing a bear which was known for strength, and for the foxes, he had gotten stat points in dexte
The people kept moving without looking back but Frank was lingering at the back of the whole group as he would constantly look back at the soldiers who were now dealing with beast hawks' situation. 'Hawks, and there are six of them.' Frank thought as he finally came to a halt leaving the rest of the people to carry on moving. The rest of the people had continued moving but two people had noticed his absence and had immediately came back once they couldn't find him. "Why did you stop?" Christiana asked as she approached him. "Yeah, do you want to die?" Carl asked. Frank shook his head as he kept his gaze on the fight which was taking place ahead. All the soldiers were off the ground now and were doing their best to shoot down the hawks, so far none of the Hawks was down and the horde of beasts was getting closer. "Down!
