“Deal?”
Amber Stone looked from the smallish girl in a coma to the 5 foot 10 male that was standing before her with a poorly faded buzz-cut.
His clothes looked like they were freshly roughed and rubbled up from the nearest garbage disposal, and his backpack like it had been through two ravening wolves that loved the taste of cheap leather and sweaty sunbathed fabric.
She scoffed at herself, but she could see the point of the nurses and the security, albeit how unprofessional it looked. There was no way in the sands of hell or heaven that this individual was about to produce million dollars to pay for the hospital’s treatment at the bat of an eye, right?
“Alright. How much do I owe?” Benjamin responded without skipping a beat. He dropped his bag, and began to scroll through his phone.“I think we need to head down to accounts for that, Mr Wallouby.” said Amber, pointing to exit the room.
“I prefer to be called Benjamin, and you have to be crazy if you think I will be leaving my sister alone with these lunatics you call staff. Again, I ask, how much do I owe?” Benjamin was staring directly at Amber now, eyes heated.
Amber turned to one of the thinner nurses. “Get somebody from downstairs now.” she told them.“I….er” the nurses looked at themselves.
Amber only massaged her temple.“What is it?” she asked them.“No one from collections is working today, Ma’am. It’s the night shift. They’d be here first thing tomorrow.” One summoned the courage to speak.
“Are you telling me that you are removing a patient from her quarters, without even knowing the figure or how she was even owing the hospital in the first place? Do you want to never work as a nurse in this city ever again?!!” Amber silently threatened.“I rrr-rr-received the oo-order from CFO’s office, Ma’am.”
“Good. Go get him in here.” Amber replied.
The nurses looked at themselves again. The CFO? The Chief Finance Officer that was only number 2 to the CEO of MedHill Hospital? They should fetch that kind of man and bring him here?“Only if you want to keep your jobs here, that is.” Amber added.
The nurses nervously rushed out of the room. After 30 minutes, which Benjamin spent caressing his sister’s features, and sometimes eying the beautiful MD, the nurses came back in. Followed behind them, a man of above-average height and significant build walked into the room.
He wore a neat two-piece suit, and his thick beards and empty clipboard he had beneath his armpits commanded some authority with the members in the room.“Miss Stone, you have crossed the line in summoning someone like me. You forget your place in this hospital.” he voiced.
Amber gestured to the scene.“Sir, did you order this patient to be evacuated from her quarters?” Amber continued without addressing his concern. The CFO seemed to contemplate whether to rip Amber to shreds or simply kick her.
“Yes” he started begrudgingly “her payments stopped one month ago. I don’t know if you are aware of this Miss Stone, but this hospital does not run on kindness or goodwill or charity.”“I know” replied Mrs Stone. “This man is the guardian to the patient. He would like to pay.”
The CFO looked at Benjamin, ragged clothes galore. He then looked at Amber, then at the security, and then at the nurses. His face contorted to stifle a laugh.“Is this some kind of joke? Is it my birthday, and somebody is going to jump out somewhere?”
“The full bill please.” echoed both Miss Stone and Benjamin.
The CFO wiggled his nose, and opened his clipboard, tracing around it with a defunct looking pen.“If this turns out to be some foolhardy quest, your head will roll, Miss Stone. As you know, anyone that doesn’t make this hospital any money, is an enemy.
Here it is. Ivy Wallouby. $4,600,207.5. Now don’t ask me about any payment plan-”
“It’s done. Check” snapped Benjamin.
It was as if time stood still. Everybody was looking at Benjamin, and the CFO was still gripping the clipboard with his right hand when his phone rang.“Hello?” asked the CFO.“Sir, we just saw a credit of $4.7 million for a Ivy Wallouby. Are you aware about this?” said the person on the other line.
“I” began the CFO, looking at the ragged boy. “This must be some sort of scam.” said the CFO. $4.7! With an extra $100,000?!
Amber was the first to step forward. Her hands clasped gently in front of her waist.“Mr Benjamin, on behalf of MedHill Hospital, I am offering you a formal but very heart felt apology. As promised, we may make the apology on public TV if you wish, and every member of your extended family may receive free care at MedHill.”
Benjamin only folded his arms. He tried to look tough as nails, but being honest with himself, he did not remember the last time somebody had apologized to him.
“This is not acceptable” said Benjamin. He then pointed to the CFO.“You have insulted I and my Sister. Does this man have nothing to say?!!” asked Benjamin.
“Don’t push me, boy.” sneered the CFO.“Mr Alcatraz, those who don’t make any money for this hospital is the enemy. If you don’t bow your head, and apologize, please consider your employment here terminated effectively now. I am already firing both of these nurses.” said Amber Stone.
There must be consequences after all.
Mr Alcatraz had a spread of shock before absolute fear dominated his face. He bowed his head slowly, and renounced every ounce of his dignity as a CFO.“Please accept my apologies, Master Benjamin.”
“System Initialized! Task 2: Make a number two bow before you, Achieved! Task 3: Domination, Begin.”
“Task 3: Domination, Begin.”Domination? Task 3? What was that all about?Benjamin’s phone pinged and he took it out to look at the bank alert.“Debit Amt: $4,700,000 Acc:143******23 Desc:Domination Date:04/07/23Balance: $495,300,000”This was really happening. He looked up at the scene before him. The nurses were plugging Ivy back into her respirators and re-inserting her IV drips, albeit hesitantly,as Amber had just told them they would be losing their jobs. Amber supervised them, while Mr Alcatraz still had his head bowing. He had miscalculated. Surely this boy was from a massively wealthy family, even if he didn’t recognize the family name, and only now decided to reveal himself now for some strange reasons. As the CFO to the hospital, he must humble himself, and affiliate himself with this boy and his family, to draw out more money from them….“Once again, a thousand apologies, Mr Wallouby. But might I suggest Ms Claire is moved to a different Ward? I have to say, this room is tight
It was getting late outside at the hospital parking lot, and Benjamin could not believe his life. From a multi-millionaire, back to a pauper! He had not a single cent on him, and decided to call his wife to see if she would pick him up.He called her three times to get no answer. On the fourth try, the call was denied. He waited a while before trying a fifth time. Maybe he was in a daze from losing, or maybe he was just stupid. He and Claire shared a special connection. Surely something like this won’t be enough to make her disregard him completely. She picked up on the fifth try.“Hello?” she talked as if her mouth was full of something.“Claire, it’s me. Can we talk away from everyone else? I’m at my sister’s hospital.” said Benjamin. Claire was quiet a minute on the line, before she made a gagging noise and brought herself closer to the phone.“Sure. We can talk now.” she said.“Uh- I was thinking in person, Claire. Alone.” he stressed.“I don’t think it’s a good idea for you to see me
Benjamin Black felt like he was riding a jet powered cloud. He had driven a car once at a parking lot with some of his high school buddies. But it was an older model that belonged to a friend’s parent, and you could feel the weight of the steering rack and every gravel and chip and bump on the parking lot. This Mclaren just felt like nothing at all. Meanwhile, Amber was extremely nervous. She had only taught him how to use the paddle shifters on the steering wheel minutes ago, and the Park and Reverse buttons on the gearbox. But this man was driving at 170 miles per hour. Just 30 miles from the top speed in open country road.“Holy Shit!” laughed Benjamin at the top of his lungs. The windows were down and the winds were forming a tiny hurricane in the cabin. The V6 engine was roaring with it. Amber nodded but kept her eyes watchful on the bends that were coming up.This was her dream car but riding in the passenger seat of someone that hadn’t driven a vehicle in the past 5 years was t
Mr Mardo Wormwood tapped his fingers gently together as he listened to the bank manager. The details of the conversation was about a new acquisition; the buying of the rights to air Super-sports Television on Aircable. This would make Mr Mardo richer beyond imagination.Sports was the one thing Aircable had been lagging behind on all these years because a certain company had monopolized the rights many years ago, but this company was about to the bankrupt soon and they were selling the rights to the highest bidder. In this case, that is Mr Mardo.“How much are we looking at, Mr Mardo?” said the manager.“Just tell me your interest rates above $10 million. If I deem it acceptable, then we can talk.”As the bank manager continued to drone on, Mardo caught the sight of a familiar individual. Or thought he had. Maybe the high interest rates the manager was explaining to him had distracted him.“Hey, Sweetie.” It was Claire Black, surprising him on his day of working. Mardo was pleased to
“I repeat. Violent male on the loose.” said the guard into the radio.“I told you not to touch me” Benjamin said. He could feel his body heating up. Was this the effect of using the system? But he soon felt the touch of a cool hand on his shoulders that seemed to dissipate the heat.“Benjamin, enough” said Amber. Pleading with her eyes. Benjamin cooled down, but then turned to Mardo. The Bank manager rushed into the scene.“What on earth is going on here?!” asked Mr David.“It’s this homeless dude. He tried to attack this gentleman here!” said one of the onlookers.Soon the others started joining in.“Yes, see how he dresses and how unkempt he looks.”“Somebody like him should be locked up! What is he doing in a bank?”“He’s a scammer. I saw him telling that woman to send him some money!” They all chorused.“That’s not true!” yelled Amber.“Enough!” said Mr David. He looked at Benjamin, and then looked over to Mr Mardo, who had turned white.“Mr Mardo, did this man try to attack you in this p
A horror-stricken Amber pulled Benjamin Black away from the crowd of astonished faces and the pallor expressions of Mardo Wormwood and Claire Black."What are you thinking?" she asked as they approached one of the ticketing counters. Benjamin didn't respond immediately, his body only moving deliriously when Amber grabbed him, and his eyes still set on WormWood.“Hmm?” he half-mouthed at her question.Amber looked around for the Bank Manager. She saw him emerging out of a hidden hallway, laden with paperwork that rose from his hands to above his head, and still not enough to cover that wrinkly crooked smile of his. It was going to rain a payday of commissions for this Skaling Bank Branch."We should leave now." Amber put it bluntly. "If you tell the Bank Manager it was just an honest overstep on your part, we can still avoid this. That man will still lose his stake in the bank, and you'll be in the good light.""What?" That seemed to jolt Benjamin back to reality. "Why would I do that?
"Mr Benjamin, please!" David's head was lowered to his hips, and hands outstretched in a plea."You must tell me how we have offended you! Should I relinquish the services of the customers who also joined in falsely accusing you? Done. Perhaps I shall fire some of our tellers who watched without doing anything as well? If it is what you desire, consider it done!"The bank tellers; silent non-descript middle-aged men and women, tucked safely behind their granite counters, all turned to their manager in a cold sweat. Maybe minding their business during the commotion hadn't been the best bet after all."Now now" Benjamin tried to pacify him, but something sitting at the bottom right of his peripheral vision struck him as odd. When he turned his head to get a better look, the arrangement moved only so much as to sit at the bottom right again."Am I having a stroke?" Benjamin thought to himself. After turning his head a few more times, it became clear that the object was not of his external
"Let's do it." responded Benjamin. No one was more pleased with the recent developments as much as David. In one fell swoop, it seemed that Benjamin would still be keeping his fortune within Skaling Bank, just under a different name. Amber looked similarly relieved as well."When do we start?" rapped Benjamin."Now we have to find a registrar to start the new company. There are quite a few to choose from…""If I may-" David produced a small red business card. "These people are highly recommended by us, recognized and represent some of the most elite businessmen in the Country. The Number 2 on the Forbes Under 40 list had their second company registered there.Amber scoffed."It's not that difficult to get registered. Why should we go to a place that sounds like they would charge us 100x the normal price?" she interrogated. Benjamin looked for David's response."There is a simple explanation, Madam. Have you heard of the Star Alliance?" David asked. Amber had heard the phrase in passing
