First Transfer

“Deal?”

Amber Stone looked from the smallish girl in a coma to the 5 foot 10 male that was standing before her with a poorly faded buzz-cut.

His clothes looked like they were freshly roughed and rubbled up from the nearest garbage disposal, and his backpack like it had been through two ravening wolves that loved the taste of cheap leather and sweaty sunbathed fabric.

She scoffed at herself, but she could see the point of the nurses and the security, albeit how unprofessional it looked. There was no way in the sands of hell or heaven that this individual was about to produce million dollars to pay for the hospital’s treatment at the bat of an eye, right?

“Alright. How much do I owe?” Benjamin responded without skipping a beat. He dropped his bag, and began to scroll through his phone.“I think we need to head down to accounts for that, Mr Wallouby.” said Amber, pointing to exit the room.

“I prefer to be called Benjamin, and you have to be crazy if you think I will be leaving my sister alone with these lunatics you call staff. Again, I ask, how much do I owe?” Benjamin was staring directly at Amber now, eyes heated.

Amber turned to one of the thinner nurses. “Get somebody from downstairs now.” she told them.“I….er” the nurses looked at themselves.

Amber only massaged her temple.“What is it?” she asked them.“No one from collections is working today, Ma’am. It’s the night shift. They’d be here first thing tomorrow.” One  summoned the courage to speak.

“Are you telling me that you are removing a patient from her quarters, without even knowing the figure or how she was even owing the hospital in the first place? Do you want to never work as a nurse in this city ever again?!!” Amber silently threatened.“I rrr-rr-received the oo-order from CFO’s office, Ma’am.”

“Good. Go get him in here.” Amber replied.

The nurses looked at themselves again. The CFO? The Chief Finance Officer that was only number 2 to the CEO of MedHill Hospital? They should fetch that kind of man and bring him here?“Only if you want to keep your jobs here, that is.” Amber added.

The nurses nervously rushed out of the room. After 30 minutes, which Benjamin spent caressing his sister’s features, and sometimes eying the beautiful MD, the nurses came back in. Followed behind them, a man of above-average height and significant build walked into the room.

He wore a neat two-piece suit, and his thick beards and empty clipboard he had beneath his armpits commanded some authority with the members in the room.“Miss Stone, you have crossed the line in summoning someone like me. You forget your place in this hospital.” he voiced.

Amber gestured to the scene.“Sir, did you order this patient to be evacuated from her quarters?” Amber continued without addressing his concern. The CFO seemed to contemplate whether to rip Amber to shreds or simply kick her.

“Yes” he started begrudgingly “her payments stopped one month ago. I don’t know if you are aware of this Miss Stone, but this hospital does not run on kindness or goodwill or charity.”“I know” replied Mrs Stone. “This man is the guardian to the patient. He would like to pay.”

The CFO looked at Benjamin, ragged clothes galore. He then looked at Amber, then at the security, and then at the nurses. His face contorted to stifle a laugh.“Is this some kind of joke? Is it my birthday, and somebody is going to jump out somewhere?”

“The full bill please.” echoed both Miss Stone and Benjamin.

The CFO wiggled his nose, and opened his clipboard, tracing around it with a defunct looking pen.“If this turns out to be some foolhardy quest, your head will roll, Miss Stone. As you know, anyone that doesn’t make this hospital any money, is an enemy.

Here it is. Ivy Wallouby. $4,600,207.5. Now don’t ask me about any payment plan-”

“It’s done. Check” snapped Benjamin.

It was as if time stood still. Everybody was looking at Benjamin, and the CFO was still gripping the clipboard with his right hand when his phone rang.“Hello?” asked the CFO.“Sir, we just saw a credit of $4.7 million for a Ivy Wallouby. Are you aware about this?” said the person on the other line.

“I” began the CFO, looking at the ragged boy. “This must be some sort of scam.” said the CFO. $4.7! With an extra $100,000?!

Amber was the first to step forward. Her hands clasped gently in front of her waist.“Mr Benjamin, on behalf of MedHill Hospital, I am offering you a formal but very heart felt apology. As promised, we may make the apology on public TV if you wish, and every member of your extended family may receive free care at MedHill.”

Benjamin only folded his arms. He tried to look tough as nails, but being honest with himself, he did not remember the last time somebody had apologized to him.

“This is not acceptable” said Benjamin. He then pointed to the CFO.“You have insulted I and my Sister. Does this man have nothing to say?!!” asked Benjamin.

“Don’t push me, boy.” sneered the CFO.“Mr Alcatraz, those who don’t make any money for this hospital is the enemy. If you don’t bow your head, and apologize, please consider your employment here terminated effectively now. I am already firing both of these nurses.” said Amber Stone.

There must be consequences after all.

Mr Alcatraz had a spread of shock before absolute fear dominated his face. He bowed his head slowly, and renounced every ounce of his dignity as a CFO.“Please accept my apologies, Master Benjamin.”

“System Initialized! Task 2: Make a number two bow before you, Achieved! Task 3: Domination, Begin.”
