EPISODE 6: The First Wave 1

Alex woke to slight voices and sound from outside the apartment, his evolution and awakening has enhanced his hearing far beyond the capabilities of a normal human. The voices of people on the floor below them woke continue to reach him all the way to his room.

From the footsteps he can hear, he realized that there must be at least five people.

“This is the truck, he must be inside the hotel somewhere!” one of them said.

“I cannot believe we are still doing this despite what just happened to us, despite the chaos going on. We had to kill five of our own brothers. What exactly does Yondu even want with that kid?” Another asked.

Alex slowly opens his eyes and realized yet again, Edith had snuck into his bed clinging to one of his arms while his sister Elise clings to the other. Gently, he sneak off of the bed and slipped on his shirt.

“I knew it! Yondu that fucker is still going to come after me just like in my past life, although at that time it was because I was holding his money and he needed me to work for him in return. Either way I should handle those guys away from Edith and Elise, they are not strong enough just yet.” He said to himself and sneaked to the door, silently opened it and slipped out.

He locked the door and used his heightened senses to scan the floor, he sensed a few zombies on the floor but luckily most of them are locked in their rooms and will either die there from starvation, or eventually evolve and break the door down.

“There is still one in the stair case and the two stuck inside the elevator. I can still deal with those!” he said to himself and walked towards the stair case. After walking through one flight of the stairs, he was now standing behind the zombie on the staircase. This is when Alex realized that while trying to sneak out of the room without waking either Edith or Elise, he had forgotten to carry any of his weapons.

That will not be a problem now, I may have just awakened less than twenty four hours ago but I am still an evolver. He transform his left arm to the shape of an eagle’s leg with three long talons that are harder than steel and sharp as razor and right arm stretched and hardened with a pointy end and sharp edges. He bent his feet to angle that resembles that of an Australian kangaroo for speed.

Without wasting any more time he dashed in the direction of the zombie, climbing down the flight of stair in single jumps and barely touching the stairs at all until he was right behind the zombie.

In a split second he has sunk his talons into the head of the zombie and in the next split second, he swung his right arm which is now in the shape of a long blade, cutting the head of the zombie off immediately.

A system window immediately appeared in Alex’s vision.

Time remaining until rune energy runs out and transformation comes undone: two minutes.

“It has only been a few seconds since I start using my evolver powers, I guess my level is still too low.” He said and rushed to the lower floor. As he arrived, he met two of them on top of the roof of one of the buses parked in the parking spaces. Surrounding the bus are zombies that have broken in from the floor below them.

Some of the zombies are on the floor feeding on one person among them who got caught before he got on top of the bus.

Alex decided that it will be better if he locks the door that was left open if he doesn’t want even more zombie to rush in, he snuck from shadow to shadow without making a sound until he was at the door. He transforms his hands and legs back to normal and quickly locks it. But on turning back to see what was going on, one of the men had pushed the other man off to the zombies.

They grabbed him and started devouring him immediately. The man pulled out his sword and started to cut the hands of the zombies that were trying to get him.

Alex grabbed a broken piece of metal pipe on the wall and ran to the place, with single hits to the head each, he started killing the zombies.

“These are simple unevolved zombies, even without my evolver power, I can still fuck them off!” he said out loud to himself and within a few minutes, he has killed all of the zombies in the parking space.

He looks up to the roof of the bus and his eyes met with that of the man there.

“You should get out of here soon, the zombies will probably flood the entire city once they get hungry.” Alex said and turned around, starting to walk away in the hopes that since only one of Yondu’s men remain, he will forget capturing and delivering him.

But Alex was wrong about that, he had just taken a few steps when he suddenly sensed a sword slash coming from behind him.

He instantly hardened his arms and turned around, blocking the slash with his bare hands. On the man’s face, Alex could see how confident he was that he would win so he quickly strikes him on the chest with a jab of his finger, hitting him in a vital point and freezing his entire body from moving.

He then transforms the index finger of his right hand into an eagle’s talon again and walked round the man who cannot move his body at the moment.

With a swift movement, Alex strokes the sword in the man’s hand so fast that the sword instantly got cut to pieces that fell on the floor.

“Listen here you little piece of shit. Right now your life is only worth as much as the massage I am about to give you to send back to Yondu. Tell him that if he ever sends someone after me or my family again, I will personally deliver back the heads of the pawns he sends.” Alex said. Tapping five places on his the man’s neck and released him.

The man instantly fell on the floor scared and trembling at what Alex may do to him.

Alex turned around and started walking back towards the stairs while the man on the floor was still sitting and trembling in fear of what he just experienced.

By sneaking around and not making any noise, Alex finally made it back to his room and silently unlocked it, but upon walking in, he was met with a smell of fried eggs and sausages. Edith and Elise have already woken up and taken their bath, they have just finished preparing breakfast and were about to eat.

The two of them stood up and looked at him in a curious and demanding way.

“When we woke up you were not in bed just now, where did you wander off to?” Elise asked and Edith said.

“Yes Alex, where did you wander off to this early morning? If you refuse to answer I can always check it myself.”

“I was just checking on some noises that I heard on the lower floor, when I arrived there, there were four people but two of them have already been killed by the zombies on the floor. And both of you, not just you Edith. Be careful how you use your newly awakened evolver powers or you will pass out from exhaustion. We are supposed to collect blood essence from evolved zombies and absorb them but since they have not evolved yet, we will have to go around looking for rune crystal shards that may have fallen during the eternal rain.” Alex said.

He walked towards the dining table and sat, pulled the food they have left for him and ate properly.

After he was done eating, he drank a glass of water and said.

“You two, listen to me carefully. We will be moving out of this hotel this morning. I checked our truck and all of the fuel I have stored for us and they are intact. We will use this opportunity to get out before the first wave of the zombies start.” He explained.

Elise was seated opposite him staring at his face and asked. “The first wave? What is that?”

Alex shook his head in rejection of the thought in his mind and said.

“Something we dint want to happen while we are still here. The first wave is one of the five waves of zombies that will occur very soon. Now that the virus has settled in the zombies, they have to eat. But a majority of them won’t be eating because there are no humans around to eat.  The hungry zombies will start behaving like a colony of insects, weeing through cities and regions around them to find humans and eat them.”

“By the time that happens it will be impossible to drive any type of vehicle other than heavy trucks and heavy duty equipment. That will make people hiding indoors in the city like us harder to move. Mist people will stay in their houses if they are safely secured, but that can only last for as long as their food last, and when they finally make mistake of trying to get out of that safe place, thousands of hungry zombies that get really aggressive even for the human level to handle.”

“It could be even worse, the zombies will evolve and mutate some sort of intelligence and cognitive properties. At that stage it will be batter to just give up because only an evolver can stand up to the mutated zombies because just like the evolvers, they also possess special powers.” Alex finished explaining.

Elise and Edith immediately understood what he said and begin packing their stuff.

In a few minutes, each of them was wearing their clothes which he bought for them, from top, pants and even shoes. Alex has carefully selected these for exactly this kind of situation.

They grabbed their bags and walked out of the room, each of them wearing a gun holster with two pistols; one suppressed and the other without suppressor. With a lot of loaded magazines full of bullets.

Alex was leading them with his Katana hanging from his shoulder. They followed the stairs, passing the decapitated zombies dead on the floor and walking straight into the lower floor where the truck is parked.

Alex opened the truck and they were about to go when a man came from the staircase running towards them with numerous zombies chasing him.

“Help me please, don’t leave without Me.” he shouted over and over. Elise opened the door on her side with the intention of letting the man in but Alex instantly closed the door.

“Don’t ever do that without my permission! You could get killed.” He shouted at her, he looked to her side and saw Edith a bit shocked by his sudden change in behavior and realized that he may have overreacted a bit, but he knew he was telling her the truth of the new world they now live in.

“Fine, I will take him but he stays in the front with me so I can handle him is he tries anything.” Alex said, quickly opening the door and letting Elise to the back seat where Edith is, locking the door before running to the man and slicing the head off the few zombies that were directly behind him.

With Alex’s help they ran back to the truck and got in, as Alex drive the out of the floor at high speed. As soon as they got to the entrance of the hotel, Alex could hear the growling sound of many zombies that have already started searching for food. He drove through the gate to the hotel compound and breaking through it.

On the road, they saw a group of men and women being chased by the zombies, one of them got caught after he fell and as they get on the road, they watched the man and his friends get torn limb by limb by the hundreds of zombies that are chasing them.

“This is the world we live in, remember Elise, Edith. Rushing to help others in this kind of situation will only lead to you too being killed if you are not strong enough. There is no one coming to save anybody, not the police, not the soldiers and government.” Alex reminds them just so he will be sure they will not do it.

“Where are we heading to then?” the man in the front asks.

Through the mirror next to him, Alex carefully observes the man. He was young but looks just a bit older than Alex himself. From the looks on his face Alex deducted that he must be one the university students in the area.

“A safer place than this!” Alex said and stepped on the gas
