Awaking to the sound of claws grinding against cobble, Yuler opens her eyes to meet those of Lee, whose panicked state tells of something much greater than her recovery going on around them. With muffled words, he pulls her up into a sitting position and wipes gunk from her face. Though his words remain incomprehensible, she quickly realizes that they are coming from a place of warning. Through blurred vision, she looks about them, where she spots the tail-end of Hael, whose silver fur and tar-colored flesh whip about in a dramatic manner. Her awareness rising, Yuler gasps and gags simultaneously, spitting up dark water and choking on it all the same.
"Good, you're breathing. Get up! We must move!" Lee tugs at Yuler's arm until she is on her feet, then the pair of them face Hael, who continues to mangle the bodies of Nostrum as they dare to approach her. With a bellowing shriek, she shreds each of her contesters in an inhumane act of violence. "We have to help her in any way that we can." Lee states, gripping the hilt of his sword. "Keep clear of her maw and do not present your back to her!" With this, Lee darts off to Hael's right, where he slashes at a man who has made it passed Hael's vicious onslaught.
Yuler looks about the bodies at her feet, then leans forward and picks up a sword that one had dropped in their desperate efforts to live. She then allows herself a moment to cough up more of the harsh fluids before raising the blade, ready to fight yet again. Sticking to Hael's left hind leg, Yuler remains cautious of the beast but sets her focus on two more Nostrum as they approach her from a far corner of the chamber they have found themselves in. Unsure of her ability to truly fight with such an unfamiliar weapon, she gives herself the same stance she would have used with Cronn's ax and slings the blade from overhead. As the first of the Nostrum deflects her attack, the second moves in, plunging their own blade at her. Reacting hastily, she manages to avoid being skewered and swats at them from her left to her right. The blade manages to connect with the second Nostrum's arm and they back off for a moment to recuperate. At this same moment, Hael's matted fur is seen darting downwards from up above, squashing the first Nostrum with ease and batting the second into the shadows. Hael lets out a ghastly roar in the direction of the second, who Yuler is certain must be dead.
"That'd be the last of 'em, Hael! Calm girl! Soothing thoughts!"
Yuler looks to Lee, who has now pressed himself against a wall and placed both hands out in front. Unable to obey his own warning, he is found face-to-face with the beastly woman, who continues to step toward him with a deep rumbling coming from her belly. Yuler, unsure of what to do and what not to, grasps tightly at the hilt of her blade and slowly approaches the beat from behind, but before she finds a reason to strike, Hael raises her snout into the air and sniffs several times. Then, she lowers it and turns away from Lee, who lets out a fearful pant.
"Come Yuler, we must follow her."
Yuler watches Hael squeeze into the same tunnel she had originally entered from, then looks to Lee.
"Is this safe for us? Where is she going?"
"Trust that she means us no harm, girl. She has picked up a trail. Where ever she is headed, it must mean a great deal." Lee pulls the brim of his hat down and his mask up, covering all but his eyes and the bridge of his nose. "Follow her."
Yuler nods and raises her own mask. Ensuring it is snug in place, she takes the tail end and follows Lee up through the tunnel, which remains vacant of Nostrum, unlike before. Assuming Hael had managed to cleanse the place of what vermin there was, Yuler allows her blade to fall to her side, then picks up her pace to keep close to the beast that guides them. Before long the sound of wood cracking can be heard coming from the front of their chain and Lee stops in place, as if to be watching what it is Hael has found herself doing. Yuler does the same, spotting yet another passageway into the dungeons being shredded open by Hael's onyx claws.
"Wait, should we not find Marne before leaving the dung-"
"Sh!" Lee demands, observing Hael's actions carefully and dodging what splinters find themselves coming back towards him.
"But-"
"Sh!" Lee raises his sword, ready to strike whatever comes from the opening as Hael pulls herself out of the tunnels and into a large room.
As Lee and Yuler make their way out as well, they come to realize where it is they are. A commons within The Bethel. Rows of large bookcases and seating areas fill the empty space, just as Hael lets out a pained whining.
"What's wrong with her?"
"Nothin'. She's coming back around."
Yuler watches as the Great Beast begins to shrivel away, leaving massive tufts of fur behind as Hael's human form is restored. The bandages having never left her face, she shivers in the nude against a polished floor. Lee quickly moves towards her, offering her his coat and pulling her up towards him in a warming fashion.
"There." Hael's shaking voice states as she raises a finger towards two large, unguarded oak doors. "Marne."
"Marne?" Yuler nearly sprints off, but something about the state of things within The Bethel unsettles her enough to await the others. "We must hurry then, if we are to assure his safety."
"Safety?" Lee spits with a chuckle. "Whatever lies in wait beyond those doors, it is nothing less than death."
"What do you mean?"
"The chambers there... belong to the High Priest and Priestess. It is... their throneroom." Hael shivers harshly once more as Lee helps her to her feet. The pair then begin a slow journey towards their next point of interest with Yuler taking the lead.
"Slow yourself Yuler. There will surely be another confrontation and Hael is in no condition to assist us."
"Of course." Pulling back ever so slightly, she continues towards Marne.
Once they have reached the doors, Yuler pushes against them, causing a great amount of creaking as they slowly swing open. With the doors now out of the way, they are met with a grand red carpet that runs the length of the room, and white marble floors. The high ceiling and arched architecture tell tales of congregations that once took place, but are surely a thing of the distant past. At the far end of the room, Yuler spots the frame of a man laying against the carpet, and some distance beyond him, a woman. Who stands between two empty thrones and looks on in their direction.
"How curious it is..." comes the voice of the woman, "to see such faces after... so many years."
Yuler looks to the others, then back at the crumpled form of Marne. No longer having it in her to await their approach, she rushes towards him and turns him over, inspecting his body for injuries.
"He is fine, I assure you." The woman takes a step towards Yuler, who immediately returns to her feet and pulls her blade free. The woman pauses for but a moment before continuing to approach.
"What have you done to him?" Yuler demands.
"Nothing, dear child. He is simply slumbering."
Yuler looks back to Marne and begins shaking him in an effort to wake him.
"It is no use, I am afraid. The sleep he has found himself in is the doing of a holy man's brew. Only time will stir this child."
"Lady Mardelia, High Priestess." Comes the voice of Lee. "If I may-"
"We come with a purpose." Yuler interjects.
"And what purpose might that be, Yuler?"
Startled by the woman's knowledge of her name, Yuler stumbles on her words for a moment.
"Yuler, this is no place to play your games!" Spits Lee. "Silence yourse-"
"We have come to put an end to Dabria." Yuler states confidently. Straightening herself out, she offers an honorable stance to the Priestess, who simply offers the girl a tender smile and puts open palms out to her sides.
"There will be no need for such actions to be taken. Dabria's work is nearly complete, and once it is so, High Priest Ordaite will return to me... to The Bethel."
"So it is true then. The High Priest is still living." Yuler gulps harshly, knowing now that her efforts to sway the woman have failed.
"Of course he is." Lady Mardelia looks to a large, pane-less window and smiles once more. "Always tending that garden, he is."
Moments after she speaks these words, the large doors behind them swing open once more and a mob of Nostrum approach the thrones. Though, with nothing more than a look from their High Priestess, they stop in place and each offer a bow to her.
"Fine Nostrum of these holy lands. I assure you, there is no need for violence in this moment. Allow yourselves to rest. Allow us to speak." The Bethel Nostrum do as they're told and take a knee, offering prayer to the High Priestess, who looks over them with motherly eyes. Eyes that remind Yuler of Achlys.
"Ignore this girl's words." Comes Lee's voice once more. "We wish only to retrieve the boy, then be on our way."
"I do apologize, Defector Lee. For I cannot allow you to leave these grounds. You will all return to the dungeons in a short while. I have been assured that it will take Defector Hael some time to recover from her transformation, and therefore, grant us the time to reinforce your cell. I must apologize for the treatment you lot have been given when initially placed there. It was an ill overlook on my part."
"I must doubt that." Yuler states as her lip curls with anger.
"As I presumed you might." Lady Mardelia begins closing the gap between herself and her visitors once more, placing a warm hand against Yuler's shoulder once she has done so. "Child, I must warn against continuing with these efforts. Dabria is a gift and must be cherished as such."
"What kind of gift brings so much death and despair?"
"A gift that serves a truer purpose." Removing her hand, Lady Mardelia places it into the opposite sleeve of her white, floral gown and does the same with the other, keeping both tucked tightly to her body. "To ensure that these acts can not be pursued, I must contain you for the rest of your mortal life. I pray that you forgive me."
Yuler laughs in the woman's face and then looks to Lee and Hael, who share a woeful expression. She then turns back to the woman, who has begun making her way up to the thrones with a melody being hummed under her breath. As she does this, the Bethel Nostrum behind them begin approaching once more, in numbers that Yuler knows to be far too great for the likes of her party to manage, especially in the condition they are in. Once her arms are trapped tightly in shackled bindings and Marne is lifted from under his arms, the party is escorted back out of the throneroom. Yuler watches from over her shoulder as the High Priestess brushes the cushion of the second throne whilst continuing to hum the melody. Then, to Yuler's surprise, another returns the melody to her. But the voice is not that of a man or woman. It is the deep vocals of a beast from somewhere beyond the window. Low howls strain to match the notes that have been played for them, seemingly soothed by the voice of the beast's mortal wife.
Bound at the wrists, Yuler, Hael, and Lee are escorted back into the depths of the dungeons, where Marne slowly regains consciousness as he is held up by the legs and underarms. Looking about himself, he spots the others and attempts to speak, but nothing more than a raspy whisper is made. Ceasing the effort, he continues to look around. Counting five total unfamiliar faces, he begins to piece together what has happened. Yuler managed to get caught as well, but not before locating Hael and Lee. Then, the High Priestess used him as bait, and that must be why he is also with the others."Turn here, Defect." Demands a man nearing the front as he pushes on the shoulder of Lee."Yeah, yeah. Filthy fool.""Mind your tongue!" The man shouts back, knocking an open hand against the back of Lee's head."So be it." Lee returns through gritted teeth. With an almost unseen motion, he manages to break the man's nose with a headbutt. The others look on confused but alerted to the commotion. Then, on
Yuler examines her surroundings as she awaits the sound of Hael's arrival at the bottom of the hole. Noticing the faint glow of Dabria that has imprinted itself into the walls around her, Marne, and Lee, she runs the fingertip of one glove against the surface. To her surprise, the glow finds itself sticking to her. She then brushes it off and onto her trousers as she turns to speak to the others."It would seem the pollen still emits, even in a gust-less place such as this.""The idea lacks surprise." Lee blandly proclaims, shaking his head as he too observes the situation before turning back to the entrance, where Hael makes herself known."We must find the source as quickly as possible. It will surely be our grave if we remain here for too long." Hael kicks dirt from her boots and allows her mask to fall beneath her chin, taking in a deep breath as she does so. "Fortunately for us, it would seem a straight shot to our target."The others look to where Hael's nose has found itself po
Emerging from an unfamiliar tunnel, the party coughs and sputters, trying to clear their airways of what smoke their masks could not protect them from. Careful not to tread forward in their struggles, they gain awareness of the surroundings and notice that they've found themselves to be on a cliff face overlooking woodlands and mountain ranges. The peculiar sight's beauty is lost in the violent hacking of the four as they finish spitting up blackened saliva before taking in heavy, deep breaths of fresh air."What will become of us?" Asks Lee, who wears a disgusted and sickened look on his face. "What with that vile thing having permeated our bodies.""Surely the flames would have cleansed you." Hael believes. She hunches forward and continues to breathe heavily, ensuring there is nothing more to come up before she holds herself upright."Reminds me... of a recent grave I occupied." Marne laughs to himself as he watches the smoke churn about, leaving the depths of the cave they had fre
Stirring from their slumber, the party begins their trek back towards the towers of Maciofim with sore muscles and tongues that taste of ash. Little is spoken before they wash away the bitterness from the night before with flowing river water and wipe what they can from their hair and faces, leaving streaks of filth around their collars and garbs. Once each is as satisfied as they can find themselves to be, a conversation begins to break through on their walk across prairie lands. With only a bundle of woodlands and what remains of the clearing standing between them and the city walls, Hael speaks first."I assume their efforts will rest in attempting to restore it. The plant that is.""What purpose might there be in doing such a thing?" Questions Marne, who continues to rub away grime from the back of his neck as he trudges through tall grass."Have you not listened to a word we've said?" Lee rolls his eyes and takes in a deep breath to speak with. "Without Dabria they will most cert
"Welcome, welcome!" Comes the voice of Farrow, who extends an arm to either side of his body. "What an honor it is to be in the presence of such great companions!" Stepping over Lady Mardelia's corpse, Farrow proceeds to near the others, who now walk towards him from the throne room's doors. "I must personally thank you lot, as, without you, none of this would have been possible. You've saved us many men, and might I add my own blood."The party looks over one another, still finding themselves to be in a peculiar situation. Though the gratitude of some was to be expected, it is not the gratitude of savages that they sought. Now standing toe-to-toe with the man they once met in the tavern, they observe him up and down. His garbs and weapon display a clear history with the Ryoushi, yet his behavior would suggest otherwise. Open arms and a willingness to work with others are an uncommon sight in such men."What now?" Asks Lee, who moves over to the feast and collects a bottle of yellowis
Standing behind two large doors, barred off by metal gating, and separating them from the gardens, the party awaits Farrow's arrival. As they do so, each begins to appear nervous about what is to come. Marne wipes his blade clean, wishing only to have retrieved his cleaver before reaching such a stage in their work. Yuler stands at the ready, tempted to continue without permission, but not wanting to do so at the same time, as a creature of legend is what she knows they are coming to face. Lee's concerns rest in the well-being of Hael, who stands behind the three of them and gulps harshly as she trembles; Feeling as though the reward for their efforts here may not come to be, but praying that it might. Cheers can still be heard coming from beyond the doors. Where they know others to be watching from windows and rooftops as they too await the arrival of their leader."Puppets." Mumbles Marne, who is now satisfied with the cleanliness of his blade. "Nothing but puppets.""What do you me
As Hael and Ordaite engage one another, Yuler darts out of the way and towards Marne, who continues to turn about on the ground. Pulling a vial from the stock he carries, she pops the cork and stuffs it in his mouth. As it begins to take hold, his tossing stops and he sips from the vial peacefully. Ensuring he is alright with just the one, she grabs another from his coat and sprints across the field, narrowly missing having her head taken off by the chomping of Ordaite's fanged mouth. Once she has made it over, she looks about for Lee, where she discovers him now standing upright, but still bleeding and leaning against the wall."Lee, take this!" Passing off the vial, she looks back to the fight, now knowing that there are only two vials remaining, and Hael is taking a beating. Pulling her sword free once more, she sprints in battle and slashes at the heels of Ordaite. With each swing she brings about more blood, painting the blackened flowers red once more. As Ordaite turns away from
Awaiting the arrival of Hael, the group finds themselves resting in a quarter at the far end of The Bethel, where they ponder their own thoughts. Marne looks to the high ceiling, where a set of arched beams maintain the roof beyond it. His thoughts dive deep into the ideas that Yuler provided him. A place to call home, land to care for, and potentially even children. Still, who to enjoy it with seems to slip his mind, as Yuler's words have not seemed to have hinted towards it being him she has these intentions with. As he continues to think on this, Lee finds himself focused solely on the well-being of Hael, who he assures himself will be the same woman he has always known. Perhaps, even better. If, and only if, Farrow can restore her sight, perhaps she will enjoy the life they have come to know even more so. Or... perhaps she will see his scar, and feel too much guilt to continue on with him. Yuler, who has separated herself from the others and taken to a windowsill, watches the stre
Thumping at the door causes Lee to stir from his sleep, followed by Hael. As the pair of them travel towards the sound, Lee opens the door and they are met with the face of Herald. Behind him rests Marne and Yuler, who remain stationed on the porch, but seem to be slightly disappointed. As Lee and Hael notice this, they look to Herald once more and await what is to come."It is with great displeasure that I must request that the Nostrum residing within this abode leave Crater's Crown at once. It is in the better interest of my people that I must make this request, as fear has begun to spread throughout the city.""Wait, what?" Lee asks, baffled."I am most apologetic, dear Nostrum, but it has been discussed greatly since the attack that took place last night and the people have agreed that this is a must.""We took care of that creature for your people. Why would they want us out now?" Marne wonders, no longer feeling the warm welcome they had once come to know."I'm sorry. Word from
The man-sized hare drops several books onto the floor as he notices the reach Lee has made for his blade, then cowers."P-please don't kill me!" He begs, trying to look as defenseless as possible. In doing so, the guards begin to approach."No, no! Wait, everyone stop!" Samuel demands, managing to cease even the guards in place."Lee, come down from there. Everyone, please, return to the front here.""Are... are you the Tsar?" Asks Marne, who has begun retreating to the red carpet and off the platform."I am. M-my name is Herald. Herald the Relic.""Herald the Relic?" Hael asks rhetorically."Indeed." The curious creature seems to smile at them as it speaks, wanting to maintain a peaceful conversation as it wiggles its nose. "I was once nothing more than an ordinary hare, until my creator gave me new life.""Your creator?" Yuler questions, intrigued by the strange beast."Yes, yes. My creator! What a fine man he was, or... or so I think.""You think?" She asks again."Yes, well, I nev
Stone walls line the outside of the city, forming a circular barrier that encapsulates everything within. At the face of the wall resides a great set of oak doors with a tower at either side of the entranceway. The group proceeds towards it with caution, unsure of how their presence will be taken. Yet, the twins do not carry the same weight on their shoulders. Instead, they approach the gates as if they own them and swiftly knock at the hardened surface."Hello? Anyone up there?" Samuel asks, looking up towards the towers overhead. "The Decwicks have arrived and we have brought some companions along with us.""Decwicks you say?" Comes a voice from one of the towers, but which tower does not become clear until a face appears over the edge of the one at the right. "What business have you got within the great walls of Crater's Crown?""Communion with a tradesman and the delivery of rare goods." Samuel responds, lacking any further interaction with the guard."And what goods might that be
A thin string of smoke lingers as the party awakens the next morning, offering little to no warmth for their frigid fingers as they pack up what small amount of belongings they still possess; Ready for yet another journey into unknown territory. As they ready themselves for the trip and grab one last bite to eat, they each silently acknowledge that it is the last meal they will have for some time, as all supplies have been diminished to nothingness. Regardless, they pull at their bootstraps, tighten their belts, and ensure their masks are firmly pressed to their faces. All except for Samuel and Samara, that is."Here." Hael's voice resonates in a peaceful tone as she offers one of the twins a spare of hers. "Lee will give another to whoever remains without."Lee grunts distastefully, but begins extracting a cloth from beneath his coat."How were you two so close to Dabria without masks all this time?" Yuler questions, realizing the risk that they must have been facing."Simple," begin
Hael places her index finger and thumb above her head, then looks at the stars surrounding them. Once she is seemingly satisfied, she begins moving toward an undisclosed location. Lee, Marne, and Yuler follow, sticking as close as they can without burning one another with the flames of their torches. As they go on, Lee can't help but to look over his shoulder, sensing something to be near, but not near enough to be a threat, yet."Are we sure that this Kirk will still be standing?" He asks, attempting not to come across negatively. "I mean, with all that is going on, even Maciofim is having a hard time staying standing.""We can't be sure of anything," Hael begins, "but we must attempt... something. Otherwise, all will fall without a fight.""Perhaps there are others also seeking answers." Marne offers, wanting to be part of the conversation."Perhaps so, but I find it unlikely that any have come as far as us." Hael states, stepping around a large boulder in their path. "What are the
Specks of white light sparkle across Samuel's eyes as Lee's fist meets his nose. Before a second blow can land, Hael puls Lee back and Samara does the same with Samuel. Lee struggles against Hael's grasp for a moment before shaking her off and spitting at Samuel's feet."How dense can you be, boy? Your father would have never allowed such things to transpire!""I could never speak on his behalf, as I never met my father." Samuel retorts, wiping away a bit of blood that had poured onto his upper lip. "Regardless of that fact, I thank you all for coming to our rescue. It has been a grim waiting period here in our... refuge." Samuel motions at the dirt walls that surround them, neglecting the many utensils and contraptions that also fill the space."Will you all hurry up!" Shouts Marne from outside the hideaway. "Not to rush, but I'd rather not be left to fend for myself should something else come for us.""Of course." Hael offers, turning to face the twins. "We have many questions for y
As the group arrives at the rear of the manor, they are met with a not-so-familiar sight. Outer walls covered in vines and spores present themselves to the party. Shattered windows whistle with gentle winds that pass through them, and a curious red glow still illuminates the area, but not from the heavens, as it did when the touchdown first occurred. Instead, the glow presents itself from within the manor walls. Somewhere deep within the carcass of a once luxurious home. The overall atmosphere is enough to make them shiver, but they press on. Knowing that if there is ever to come an end to this, the answers await them only here.Hael is the first to plant a foot onto the lower step. Then Lee, then Marne, and finally Yuler. With caution, Hael opens the back doors, allowing a large gust of wind to sweep over them as she does so. Once the interior is exposed, it becomes clear that the situation is far more dire than any of them could have expected. Tile floors and birch walls rest in rui
Flames burst from the nozzle of a thrower, scorching the land underfoot. With each pass it makes, sprouts of Dabria wither away with cries that almost go unheard beneath the sound of the fuel that burns them. As the stream of fire passes, another is ignited. Then another, and another. Footmen walk along Maciofim's outskirts as they incinerate all that they can, but the efforts remain futile. No matter the work they get done on this night, the next will be more of the same. Within the city, tired eyes and hushed whispers fill the streets as homes remain in disrepair and food becomes more scarce with every passing moment. However, faith serves as a guide and The Bethel's lower floors remain full of life. With the rebels and Craws all but forgotten, peace- though felt only in spurts- befalls the hallowed walls.Beyond the brick and mortar, cast aside by the city, a small fire burns bright. Its flames lick at poisonous air and whisk away what infection approaches, but it does nothing of t
Marne observes a growing crowd. Along with the growing crowd is a growing flame, where many books have already found themselves to be set alight. More join them as each member of Farrow's rebellion arrives, donating a piece of text as they come, before finding their place amongst the others. Marne begins to feel saddened by what he has come to witness thus far, acknowledging that with each page that turns to embers, rare knowledge is forever lost."Beautiful, is it not?" Comes the excited voice of Farrow, who rubs his palms together and peers off at a resting sun, which begins to set behind him. "The time has nearly come to bring Great things to an end."Marne looks about The Bethel's roof once more, then to Farrow."Nothing about this feels right."Farrow drops the smile he has been fashioning, then looks to his son."Have you had a change of heart?""No, I mean, nothing feels right without the others being present.""Ah, of course! Of course." Farrow chuckles with relief, allowing h
