Awaiting the arrival of Hael, the group finds themselves resting in a quarter at the far end of The Bethel, where they ponder their own thoughts. Marne looks to the high ceiling, where a set of arched beams maintain the roof beyond it. His thoughts dive deep into the ideas that Yuler provided him. A place to call home, land to care for, and potentially even children. Still, who to enjoy it with seems to slip his mind, as Yuler's words have not seemed to have hinted towards it being him she has these intentions with. As he continues to think on this, Lee finds himself focused solely on the well-being of Hael, who he assures himself will be the same woman he has always known. Perhaps, even better. If, and only if, Farrow can restore her sight, perhaps she will enjoy the life they have come to know even more so. Or... perhaps she will see his scar, and feel too much guilt to continue on with him. Yuler, who has separated herself from the others and taken to a windowsill, watches the streets below burn. New fires burst to life every few minutes, and more screams can be heard as Farrow's Craws continue to destroy a once beautiful cityscape. She wonders if Marne's concerns about his father are deeper than he has made them out to be. If, perhaps, he worries that his father might have strayed too far from the light to be redeemable. She looks off into the distance once more, but catches Marne's reflection in the glass.
"I'll leave that up to him." She thinks to herself.
"We leave come dawn. What say you?" Lee and Yuler turn to Marne, questioning what it is he means. "Our work here is at its end, and with Dabria out of the picture, what more have we got to focus on?"
"I've no argument to offer you." States Lee. "So long as Hael returns to us by dawn, that is."
"What of the beasts?" Questions Yuler, who turns away from the glass and folds her arms over themselves. "Have you no interest in removing those which remain?"
"'Course I do," Marne begins, "but perhaps we can do that on our own time. I see no reason for us to seek them out."
"They are changing, you know?" Lee and Marne look to Yuler with curious eyes. "The beasts, that is. Have you forgotten of those we spotted at Decwick Manor?"
"Never." Lee blandly answers. "We did destroy them, however."
"Yes, we did. But what if that wasn't all of them? What if more just like those are breeding in the darkness around us? The darkness of each chilled night?"
"Then we slay them as they make themselves known." Lee walks towards a low mattress and sprawls out on it, twiddling his thumbs as he does so. "I've wished for this all to be over since we first left the cottage. We could go home at any moment and be remembered as heroes."
"Heroes who paved a road for the innocent to die on." Marne retorts, curling his lips as he does so. "Farrow knows not what he's doing."
"Are you changing your mind on me, boy?"
"No, never. I still wish to be done as soon as possible."
"Good." Lee sighs and sips heavily from his flask, displaying obvious displeasure with how long it is taking Farrow to finish his work with Hael. "Let us hope that he at least knows enough of what he is doing to return Hael to us in one piece."
"Let's." Yuler returns to the window, now feeling irritable towards the others, but also understanding. "Perhaps... it can wait."
"What can wait?" Asks Marne, who sits across from Lee on his own mattress.
"The hunting of beasts. Perhaps... perhaps I can allow myself a few years rest."
"I'd think it best for all o' us." Lee sits upright as he hears the door between himself and Marne begin to creak open. With this, Marne bolts upright as well, and Yuler turns away from the window once more.
"A bit late, I do apologize," comes the voice of Farrow, "but I do bring... a gift." Stepping into the room, he pulls Hael in behind himself, exposing her still bandaged eyes.
"You failed her, haven't you?" Comes the agitated voice of Lee.
"I haven't taken the time to find out." Farrow offers, smiling at the man as Lee stands to his feet.
"What do you mean by that?"
"He means... we haven't tested it." Hael says, now facing Lee. "Shall we?"
"Please." Lee steps towards Hael. With trembling hands, he reaches for the bandages and slips them off. As the wrappings fall to the ground, Hael's eyes begin to open. Lee gasps and takes a step back, then swiftly wraps his arms around her torso and pulls her in tightly. Hael giggles as he does so.
"You're uglier than I remember." She childishly suggests.
"You're as much a jester as ever, my dear." Lee responds, now laughing himself.
Once they part, amber eyes look to the faces of Marne and Yuler, who each smile as they do so.
"My god, he's done it!" Marne exclaims, smiling largely and looking between Farrow and Hael, who each express great excitement. Marne then pauses and looks directly at Farrow, who in turn meets his eyes. "Thank you."
"Any time, son." Farrow winks at Marne, then clasps his hands and watches as Yuler tests Hael's eyes.
Waving a hand, then two fingers, Yuler watches as Hael's teary eyes follow.
"He truly has. What a miracle!" Taking Hael into a hug herself, Yuler shares a giggle of excitement and steps back a moment after. "You've much to see."
"Indeed."
"What's the first thing you'd like to experience with your sight returned to you? Whatever it is, I will ensure it happens." Lee offers with a toothy, flirty grin.
"An orchard."
"An... an orchard?"
"Yes." Hael's smile remains in tact as she speaks. "Outside of our cottage, I wish to grow an apple orchard of reds and greens."
"So... so... we're going... home?"
Hael nods and Lee jumps excitedly.
"Finally!"
"Finally." Hael responds.
"Well, I'd love to stay and chat a bit, but I'm afraid my Craws need me. I assume you lot will be off come morning then?"
"I think so."
"As do I."
"And I."
"Yes. Yes... we will." Yuler smiles lightly, still wishing that they could do more, and Hael catches this.
"Yuler," she begins, looking deep into the girl's flax eyes, "Cronn would be proud of all you have accomplished. Please, remind yourself of that. You've earned your peace. We all have."
Yuler looks to the buckle of her belt. Then, to the surprise of everyone, she removes it with a sigh. Placing it on the windowsill she turns to face the others once more.
"I know he would, and I'm done living for him now. What I do, this moment forward is for me and mine."
"I second that." Says Marne under his breath, now staring at Yuler, who continues to examine the last remaining artifact of Cronn.
"Well, let us not waste a good night's sleep like this. We've much land to cover come morning." Lee, out of habit, guides Hael to the bed he has dedicated to them. Then, lays down next to her and throws a blanket over the both of them.
"Don't do a thing The Bethel might frown upon." Farrow gives the pair of them a wink, then heads out the door, ensuring he shuts it behind himself.
"Don't do a thing we might frown upon." States Marne in a hardly joking tone as he too lays down for the night.
As he does this, Lee draws a curtain, separating himself and Hael from the rest of the room. Yuler then steps away from the buckle and turns to face Marne, who pulls a blanket over himself and nuzzles himself into a pillow.
"You're free to join me," he states, "if you so choose."
Yuler looks to a bed that had been prepared for her, then to Marne's. Taking in a deep breath and letting out a certain sigh, she moves towards him and places a hand against the sheets. Then, she rests herself against one corner of the bed and Marne covers her. He too then draws a curtain and extinguishes the flame of a lantern, submerging their room in the darkness of the night.
Awake the next morning, Marne finds himself and Yuler to be alone in the room as she continues to sleep. Peering through the window, the blinding light of the sun causes him to squint his eyes and look away once more. As his eyes fall over Yuler, he brushes her cheek with a finger and smiles. Then, quietly gets to his feet and moves about the room, searching for his tricorn and boots. Once they are in hand, he leaves the room as well and begins his search for the others. In almost no time at all, the search ends. Within the throne room, he finds them to be enjoying a morning feast and rum. Lee takes to tell the Craws stories of long ago, and Hael allows her eyes to wander over anything and everything that they can. Marne smiles once more and moves about the table, settling himself into a chair at Hael's side and pulling up a second seat for when Yuler comes to join them."Rest well, have ye?" Lee asks in a drunken state before chugging from a mug."I did. Did you?""Indeed. Celebratin
Marne walks through the halls, finding his way to Farrow's office space. As he enters the door he is met by the many bookshelves that surround Farrow's desk. Atop the desk, he spots The Tome of Fandor. Approaching the rather large book, he looks about himself, then back again at the blue trimmed leather. Satisfied with his position, he reaches for it."Stop there!" Comes a voice from the hall.Startled, Marne turns to face the husky sound and spots a Nostrum who adorns The Bethel's garbs. Marne looks the man up and down, then smiles."Greetings. Is Farrow in by chance?""Our leader has found himself tied up in a meeting, eager to express a plan to take what remains of Maciofim into our possession.""Oh, excellent! I've actually got some ideas of my own that I'd like to share with him. Do you think he's too busy for that?"The man grunts and then studies Marne for a moment before giving a nod and turning back towards the halls and heading left. Marne, assuming the man is off to get Far
Marne and Lee venture beyond the walls of the city and begin blindly traveling away, awaiting a column of smoke to guide them. As they go, they hear the not-so-distant sounds of others searching for clues about the tome's whereabouts. With this, they attempt to shroud themselves as much as possible. Using trees, bushes, wagons, and anything else they can find to keep out of sight as they go, attempting to disappear into the woodlands as they continue to watch the skies around them."Surely they would have found a spot by now, no?" Questions Marne impatiently. "They must know the urgency of the situation.""Calm yourself, young man." Lee demands, shuffling his feet around small weeds and jerking his head about in a searching manner. "When Hael senses they've found a good place for it, she will not hesitate to burn the damned thing. May even do so before we make ourselves known.""I couldn't blame her if she would." Marne says, shaking his head. "What is Farrow thinking?""He's thinking
Marne observes a growing crowd. Along with the growing crowd is a growing flame, where many books have already found themselves to be set alight. More join them as each member of Farrow's rebellion arrives, donating a piece of text as they come, before finding their place amongst the others. Marne begins to feel saddened by what he has come to witness thus far, acknowledging that with each page that turns to embers, rare knowledge is forever lost."Beautiful, is it not?" Comes the excited voice of Farrow, who rubs his palms together and peers off at a resting sun, which begins to set behind him. "The time has nearly come to bring Great things to an end."Marne looks about The Bethel's roof once more, then to Farrow."Nothing about this feels right."Farrow drops the smile he has been fashioning, then looks to his son."Have you had a change of heart?""No, I mean, nothing feels right without the others being present.""Ah, of course! Of course." Farrow chuckles with relief, allowing h
Flames burst from the nozzle of a thrower, scorching the land underfoot. With each pass it makes, sprouts of Dabria wither away with cries that almost go unheard beneath the sound of the fuel that burns them. As the stream of fire passes, another is ignited. Then another, and another. Footmen walk along Maciofim's outskirts as they incinerate all that they can, but the efforts remain futile. No matter the work they get done on this night, the next will be more of the same. Within the city, tired eyes and hushed whispers fill the streets as homes remain in disrepair and food becomes more scarce with every passing moment. However, faith serves as a guide and The Bethel's lower floors remain full of life. With the rebels and Craws all but forgotten, peace- though felt only in spurts- befalls the hallowed walls.Beyond the brick and mortar, cast aside by the city, a small fire burns bright. Its flames lick at poisonous air and whisk away what infection approaches, but it does nothing of t
As the group arrives at the rear of the manor, they are met with a not-so-familiar sight. Outer walls covered in vines and spores present themselves to the party. Shattered windows whistle with gentle winds that pass through them, and a curious red glow still illuminates the area, but not from the heavens, as it did when the touchdown first occurred. Instead, the glow presents itself from within the manor walls. Somewhere deep within the carcass of a once luxurious home. The overall atmosphere is enough to make them shiver, but they press on. Knowing that if there is ever to come an end to this, the answers await them only here.Hael is the first to plant a foot onto the lower step. Then Lee, then Marne, and finally Yuler. With caution, Hael opens the back doors, allowing a large gust of wind to sweep over them as she does so. Once the interior is exposed, it becomes clear that the situation is far more dire than any of them could have expected. Tile floors and birch walls rest in rui
Specks of white light sparkle across Samuel's eyes as Lee's fist meets his nose. Before a second blow can land, Hael puls Lee back and Samara does the same with Samuel. Lee struggles against Hael's grasp for a moment before shaking her off and spitting at Samuel's feet."How dense can you be, boy? Your father would have never allowed such things to transpire!""I could never speak on his behalf, as I never met my father." Samuel retorts, wiping away a bit of blood that had poured onto his upper lip. "Regardless of that fact, I thank you all for coming to our rescue. It has been a grim waiting period here in our... refuge." Samuel motions at the dirt walls that surround them, neglecting the many utensils and contraptions that also fill the space."Will you all hurry up!" Shouts Marne from outside the hideaway. "Not to rush, but I'd rather not be left to fend for myself should something else come for us.""Of course." Hael offers, turning to face the twins. "We have many questions for y
Hael places her index finger and thumb above her head, then looks at the stars surrounding them. Once she is seemingly satisfied, she begins moving toward an undisclosed location. Lee, Marne, and Yuler follow, sticking as close as they can without burning one another with the flames of their torches. As they go on, Lee can't help but to look over his shoulder, sensing something to be near, but not near enough to be a threat, yet."Are we sure that this Kirk will still be standing?" He asks, attempting not to come across negatively. "I mean, with all that is going on, even Maciofim is having a hard time staying standing.""We can't be sure of anything," Hael begins, "but we must attempt... something. Otherwise, all will fall without a fight.""Perhaps there are others also seeking answers." Marne offers, wanting to be part of the conversation."Perhaps so, but I find it unlikely that any have come as far as us." Hael states, stepping around a large boulder in their path. "What are the
