Images of straw-filled barrows reflect back at four figures as the glow of lanterns illuminate them in the absence of sunlight. Their obscure locations tell of work that had only just recently been abandoned. The four remain ignorant to such things, as greater concerns have already absorbed their conscious minds. Pressing on into deepening darkness, they keep their blades up high and their lanterns higher. With the rustling of their own footsteps occupying their hearing, no matter their efforts in keeping quiet, they rely mostly on their senses of sight and smell. Motions beyond the light they provide draw eyes and curious odors give new directions... until they give too many. Stopping almost simultaneously, each member of the party sways their lantern in opposing manners.
"The Decwicks say it'll take us more than one night, hm?" Lee grinds his teeth as he scrunches his left cheek, peering off in the same direction.
"They did." Assures Marne, now standing alongside Lee with his candlelight illuminating the grounds ahead. "We should keep together. If we've been given more than one night to fulfill this task, we've no need in separating from one another."
"Hmph." Lee sniffs sharply at the air. Then, begins to move once more.
Hael and Yuler keep near at the rear, ensuring that nothing attempts to sneak up on the group as they press on. Before long, they reach a far corner of the stone wall, where Hael steps to the front and runs her fingers over the scarred surface.
"These markings are relatively fresh. Whatever made them was attempting to climb out of this pen."
"Understandably so." Adds Yuler, still feeling uneasy about the whole situation.
"Come," insists Lee, following the wall to its right, "we'll surely stumble upon them soon."
"Soon would be an understatement." Hael tips her head to one side as if listening to something up ahead. The others acknowledge this and slow their pace, attempting to catch whatever it might be as well.
Scuttering and scraping become clear but do not yet seem to be aggressive in nature.
"Seems they haven't given up the effort." Lee turns a small wheel atop his lantern, prompting the others to do the same. As this is done, the lights within begin to dim and the immediate area around them darkens drastically. "Stick close to Hael."
Marne and Yuler do so without question. Leaving Lee to his own devices as he strays away from the group.
"Where is he-"
"Shh!" Demands Hael as she lowers herself as much as possible without hindering her ability to walk forwards. "Be ready."
Marne clips his lantern at his hip and silently slings his cleaver overhead, allowing the handle to rest on his shoulder as he grips the blade's edge in his free hand. Yuler keeps her ax in its shorter form and tucked tight against her body, allowing herself to keep her lantern held at the height of her shins. Hael, who has now stopped only a few yards away from the source of the sounds, sticks the edge of her sword into the ground. Then, winds her arm back with a lantern in hand. As if awaiting a signal, she remains as still as possible in this position. With what seems to be the hooting of an owl somewhere opposite of themselves, the beasts stop the efforts. As this happens, Hael immediately launches her lantern towards them. The flame spirals within, nearly extinguishing itself in the process. As glass shatters and the contents spill out, a burst of light illuminates the creatures for a brief moment. Startled by the sound and the light, they yip and back away from the wall, but quickly turn towards one of their own as it lets out a pain-filled wail. Lee tears his blade from the beast as he makes yet another hooting sound, which causes Hael to lunge forward herself. In one quick motion, she leaps from her hiding spot and clangs her sword against the wall.
"Now!" She shouts, still running her blade against the wall and drawing the attention of the four or five lycan that remain.
Marne and Yuler, taking this as their queue, expose themselves to the threat as well. With each of the beasts focused on Lee and Hael, another is quickly brought down by Marne's cleaver, which finds itself grinding at the paralyzed spinal column of an unsuspecting victim. Yuler, on the other hand, does not find herself to be so lucky with her engagement. As she attempts a swipe at the rear legs of a lycan that has already noticed her, it kicks its legs out, managing to knock the wind out of her. By now, Hael's efforts to distract have concluded and she finishes her striking of the wall with a whistling swish that causes yet another lycan yowl. Provoked growls and snapping are heard as two move in on Lee, who has only just managed to reopen the vent of his lantern. In moments, the area is illuminated around him and the beasts once more find themselves in a weakened state. With his light blinding them in their attack, one clumsily swipes a paw and loses it almost immediately.
"Yuler!" Marne shouts, desperately tugging at his cleaver to try breaking it free as he watches the lycan Yuler had failed to hit start to move nearer to her. "Roll!"
Taking his word, Yuler kicks herself off to one side just as the beast pounces. As its maw is met with a mouthful of earth, it snarls angrily and shakes the debris away. Once it has done so, it quickly returns to its attack. Yuler turns herself over so that her back is against the ground and places the ax out in front of herself, managing to catch the beast's jaw as it bites down on the wood and begins thrashing around.
"Marne!" Hael's voice draws his attention as one of the unoccupied lycan begins to charge. The rumbling of its vocal cords fills his ears as eyes of pure evil and hatred set themselves on his own.
Stepping down on the one he has slain and pulling himself up, he yanks at the cleaver until it is finally freed. Looking towards the beast that charges him and then at the one which has already begun snapping at Yuler, he grits his teeth, winds the cleaver back, and slings it.
"Yuler!" Marne's voice calls out once more. Taking her eyes off her attacker, she spots the cleaver, as well as Marne; who has braced himself against the trunk of a tree and placed his hands out in front of him, as if to be preparing for what is to come. Taking it all in as quickly as she can, she kicks against the lycan's jaw, causing its head to break away from the ax just as Marne's cleaver connects with its face. A cry is cut short as it falls limp. Taking what she has seen from Hael, she recollects the lantern that had fallen from her grasp and launches it at Marne's attacker, whilst producing a loud pitched whistle from her lips. As the glass crashes against the ground, the lycan turns to her, but only for a brief moment. As it turns back to Marne and goes in for a bite, he has already managed to shift himself out of the way. The beast's snout slams into the tree's bark, just as Yuler returns Marne's favor. Her ax finds itself placed between the lycan's ribs, where the lungs quickly begin to deflate. Collecting Marne's cleaver, she passes it off to him, with him giving her a grateful nod and her own ax. "Thanks."
"Of course." The pair look back to Hael and Lee, who have managed to bring down the last of the pack while they had been occupied.
"That will have to do for tonight." Huffs Lee, who plops himself against the ground and pulls out a stained cloth from a pant pocket. "We've yet to be prepared for another one like that."
"What? Should we not go on? The night is still young." Argues Yuler, who watches Lee use the cloth to clean his blade.
"We were fortunate enough that none of us were injured, Roo-... Yuler." Collecting Lee's lantern, Hael takes a seat herself, still huffing from the battle, and points to Marne's cleaver. "We will need that sharpened before next nightfall."
"Understood." Marne looks to his weapon with disapproval, knowing it to be true.
"Is there no other weapon you are proficient with?" Lee pulls his flask free and takes a hearty gulp from it, letting his eyes rest on Yuler.
"None that I have with me. No."
"Perhaps we should see what the Decwick's possess in their armory, then. It'd be for the best that-"
"N-No." Yuler grips at the ax with both hands in an insistent manner. "I've chosen to use this and it is what I will use."
Lee and Hael turn to face one another before Hael lowers her head and begins wiping her own blade clean. Leaving Lee to let off steam through his nostrils as he raises his flask to his lips once more.
"So be it."
Polished floorboards creak underfoot, echoing off white, floral walls and filling the halls with life. Windows with rounded yet pointed arches let in the warm morning light through pulled-back, dark green curtains, and allow the sounds of morning birds to travel throughout the manor. Yuler admires the simple, yet elegant architecture as she passes through gothic arches at each bend and new hall, having managed to lose her way after leaving the quarters she had been given the day before. The Decwick's lifestyle was something she has only ever dreamt of, as living such a life in times like these... seems only a fantasy. As she continues to search for the stairwell leading to the primary floor, she manages to catch a whisper coming from somewhere not far off. With her curiosity getting the best of her, she creeps further down the hall; ensuring that she does not allow the hardened heels of her boots to give her away."All in due time, dear sister."The voice of Samuel becomes clear as Yu
With the light of a full moon pouring through overhead branches, the Nostrum raise their lanterns and begin yet another march across the estate. Fumbling wood assures them that Samuel has once again sealed them in as they wander off towards the furthest corner at their right. Lee, taking the lead once more, keeps Hael- who is now without a lantern- at his side, allowing Marne and Yuler to stray near the rear. It takes little to no time at all for them to stumble upon their next, and seemingly finally target. Heaps of straw litter the ground, yet seem to bulk together with one another the further on that they travel. As they lay their eyes upon a great mound of it, they quickly dim the light from within their lanterns. Partially to keep hidden, and partially to avoid setting the lands ablaze."If it weren't for the circumstances we're working with, I'd gladly cut our work short." Whispers Lee, who is the last to close his lantern's vent. "Damn shame.""This is quite an unusual sight, i
Walking with haste through city streets and tucking away when strangers appear, the party attempts to keep themselves concealed in the darkness of a still lingering night sky. Dodging streetlights and lit-up windows, they press on. Leaving Lee to guide their way. As they brush through an alley, Lee puts up a hand, signaling for them to stop. He then presses himself up against a cold cobble wall and the others do the same. Soft clops come from where the alley meets the main streets once again, and shortly after it is heard, the sound comes to pass. Marne studies the figure as it passes, and two others that do so shortly after. Each wears a similar attire to their own."Bethel Nostrum?" He asks in a hushed tone. He receives nothing more than a nod from Lee, who gives him a swift glance before motioning for them to follow once more.Stepping out of the shadows and onto a sidewalk, they pass a horsedrawn carriage, then another. Each with their animals still fastened at their fronts. Yuler
Strange whispers intrude on the dreams of those who sleep throughout the inn, causing them to toss and turn in the night. For those who've been awoken, or were awake already, the whispers only assure them of what they have already come to expect. Rushed footsteps and the banging of drawers announce even to those outside that fear has taken hold and nobody who is aware feels safe. With all that is going on, the door to Marne and Yuler's room receives light but hasty knocks from someone in the hall. The knocking stirs Yuler from what was an already shallow slumber, and with the second set of bangs, she pulls herself to a corner of her bed and gets to her feet. Turning the knob and pulling it, she is almost immediately set aside by Lee, who is followed in by Hael. Both appear slightly unsettled themselves, but not as much as those within the other rooms, who continue in their efforts to escape the confines of the building as swiftly as they can."What is-""Shh!" Lee places a finger in t
Marne and Yuler find themselves ogling Maciofim's architecture as they wander the streets in fresh linens; Courtesy of Lee and Hael. With the sun now protruding from the horizon and casting its rays over the city once more, gold plating can be seen in nearly each and every one of the towers that have come to be. It is clear to them that The Bethel's grasp on the lives of the citizens is responsible for this, as the gold that shines the brightest remains that which coats the roofs of The Bethel's towers. The pair continue to examine their surroundings at their own will without speaking a word for some time until Marne breaks the silence between them."It's truly no wonder that a place like this can not exist in every corner of the globe. What with all the time and resources it surely took them to put it together. Hm?""Hm." Yuler remains fixated on nearby shops and the abundance of people that litter the streets and alleyways. Curious as to how so many could be packed so close together
Marne looks about the crowded room, awaiting anyone's response to his cries. Yet a silent place is all it turns out to be. Eyes gawk at the pair of them as Yuler lays against the floor and Marne cradles her from neath her shoulders. Then, one man from beyond Marne's line of sight makes his way towards the front. A coat longer than Marne's own brushes the splinter-riddled boards underfoot as the silhouette continues to approach before coming to a stop only a yard or so away. The man, whose battle-hardened eyes have set themselves on the arrow, kneels down alongside Yuler and swiftly tears the arrowhead from her flesh."Ah-Hak!" Cries Yuler, now feeling for the injury, eager to soothe the pain."Why in Numen's name would you do that!?" Marne nearly lets Yuler fall in anger before coming to his senses and covering the puncture wound, attempting to prevent further bleeding. As he does this, he looks back to the man who is now pulling back his coat. Marne's eyes widen as he sees the conten
Water sloshes around Yuler's ankles as the pitch-black depths of The Bethel's dungeons consume her, leaving nothing to be seen but a dull light at the entrance point of a seemingly endless stairwell. As she continues to trek downwards, she acknowledges that the water around her seems to be pouring in from city sewage, as the odor alone is enough to blur what vision she does retain in such a place. When she finally reaches the base of the stairs, using nothing but a hand and the walls to guide herself, a new light source is found. Around the frame of what she can only assume to be a door, a glowing orange arch grasps her attention and she quickly moves towards it. Once the wooden barrier is felt by the pads of her fingers, she begins searching for a handle at either corner of the door. Once located, she attempts to open it, but to no avail. Assuming it to be locked and likely guarded, she backs away and readies the same shoulder that had been injured. Then, she charges the door. Soften
Awaking to the sound of claws grinding against cobble, Yuler opens her eyes to meet those of Lee, whose panicked state tells of something much greater than her recovery going on around them. With muffled words, he pulls her up into a sitting position and wipes gunk from her face. Though his words remain incomprehensible, she quickly realizes that they are coming from a place of warning. Through blurred vision, she looks about them, where she spots the tail-end of Hael, whose silver fur and tar-colored flesh whip about in a dramatic manner. Her awareness rising, Yuler gasps and gags simultaneously, spitting up dark water and choking on it all the same."Good, you're breathing. Get up! We must move!" Lee tugs at Yuler's arm until she is on her feet, then the pair of them face Hael, who continues to mangle the bodies of Nostrum as they dare to approach her. With a bellowing shriek, she shreds each of her contesters in an inhumane act of violence. "We have to help her in any way that we c
Thumping at the door causes Lee to stir from his sleep, followed by Hael. As the pair of them travel towards the sound, Lee opens the door and they are met with the face of Herald. Behind him rests Marne and Yuler, who remain stationed on the porch, but seem to be slightly disappointed. As Lee and Hael notice this, they look to Herald once more and await what is to come."It is with great displeasure that I must request that the Nostrum residing within this abode leave Crater's Crown at once. It is in the better interest of my people that I must make this request, as fear has begun to spread throughout the city.""Wait, what?" Lee asks, baffled."I am most apologetic, dear Nostrum, but it has been discussed greatly since the attack that took place last night and the people have agreed that this is a must.""We took care of that creature for your people. Why would they want us out now?" Marne wonders, no longer feeling the warm welcome they had once come to know."I'm sorry. Word from
The man-sized hare drops several books onto the floor as he notices the reach Lee has made for his blade, then cowers."P-please don't kill me!" He begs, trying to look as defenseless as possible. In doing so, the guards begin to approach."No, no! Wait, everyone stop!" Samuel demands, managing to cease even the guards in place."Lee, come down from there. Everyone, please, return to the front here.""Are... are you the Tsar?" Asks Marne, who has begun retreating to the red carpet and off the platform."I am. M-my name is Herald. Herald the Relic.""Herald the Relic?" Hael asks rhetorically."Indeed." The curious creature seems to smile at them as it speaks, wanting to maintain a peaceful conversation as it wiggles its nose. "I was once nothing more than an ordinary hare, until my creator gave me new life.""Your creator?" Yuler questions, intrigued by the strange beast."Yes, yes. My creator! What a fine man he was, or... or so I think.""You think?" She asks again."Yes, well, I nev
Stone walls line the outside of the city, forming a circular barrier that encapsulates everything within. At the face of the wall resides a great set of oak doors with a tower at either side of the entranceway. The group proceeds towards it with caution, unsure of how their presence will be taken. Yet, the twins do not carry the same weight on their shoulders. Instead, they approach the gates as if they own them and swiftly knock at the hardened surface."Hello? Anyone up there?" Samuel asks, looking up towards the towers overhead. "The Decwicks have arrived and we have brought some companions along with us.""Decwicks you say?" Comes a voice from one of the towers, but which tower does not become clear until a face appears over the edge of the one at the right. "What business have you got within the great walls of Crater's Crown?""Communion with a tradesman and the delivery of rare goods." Samuel responds, lacking any further interaction with the guard."And what goods might that be
A thin string of smoke lingers as the party awakens the next morning, offering little to no warmth for their frigid fingers as they pack up what small amount of belongings they still possess; Ready for yet another journey into unknown territory. As they ready themselves for the trip and grab one last bite to eat, they each silently acknowledge that it is the last meal they will have for some time, as all supplies have been diminished to nothingness. Regardless, they pull at their bootstraps, tighten their belts, and ensure their masks are firmly pressed to their faces. All except for Samuel and Samara, that is."Here." Hael's voice resonates in a peaceful tone as she offers one of the twins a spare of hers. "Lee will give another to whoever remains without."Lee grunts distastefully, but begins extracting a cloth from beneath his coat."How were you two so close to Dabria without masks all this time?" Yuler questions, realizing the risk that they must have been facing."Simple," begin
Hael places her index finger and thumb above her head, then looks at the stars surrounding them. Once she is seemingly satisfied, she begins moving toward an undisclosed location. Lee, Marne, and Yuler follow, sticking as close as they can without burning one another with the flames of their torches. As they go on, Lee can't help but to look over his shoulder, sensing something to be near, but not near enough to be a threat, yet."Are we sure that this Kirk will still be standing?" He asks, attempting not to come across negatively. "I mean, with all that is going on, even Maciofim is having a hard time staying standing.""We can't be sure of anything," Hael begins, "but we must attempt... something. Otherwise, all will fall without a fight.""Perhaps there are others also seeking answers." Marne offers, wanting to be part of the conversation."Perhaps so, but I find it unlikely that any have come as far as us." Hael states, stepping around a large boulder in their path. "What are the
Specks of white light sparkle across Samuel's eyes as Lee's fist meets his nose. Before a second blow can land, Hael puls Lee back and Samara does the same with Samuel. Lee struggles against Hael's grasp for a moment before shaking her off and spitting at Samuel's feet."How dense can you be, boy? Your father would have never allowed such things to transpire!""I could never speak on his behalf, as I never met my father." Samuel retorts, wiping away a bit of blood that had poured onto his upper lip. "Regardless of that fact, I thank you all for coming to our rescue. It has been a grim waiting period here in our... refuge." Samuel motions at the dirt walls that surround them, neglecting the many utensils and contraptions that also fill the space."Will you all hurry up!" Shouts Marne from outside the hideaway. "Not to rush, but I'd rather not be left to fend for myself should something else come for us.""Of course." Hael offers, turning to face the twins. "We have many questions for y
As the group arrives at the rear of the manor, they are met with a not-so-familiar sight. Outer walls covered in vines and spores present themselves to the party. Shattered windows whistle with gentle winds that pass through them, and a curious red glow still illuminates the area, but not from the heavens, as it did when the touchdown first occurred. Instead, the glow presents itself from within the manor walls. Somewhere deep within the carcass of a once luxurious home. The overall atmosphere is enough to make them shiver, but they press on. Knowing that if there is ever to come an end to this, the answers await them only here.Hael is the first to plant a foot onto the lower step. Then Lee, then Marne, and finally Yuler. With caution, Hael opens the back doors, allowing a large gust of wind to sweep over them as she does so. Once the interior is exposed, it becomes clear that the situation is far more dire than any of them could have expected. Tile floors and birch walls rest in rui
Flames burst from the nozzle of a thrower, scorching the land underfoot. With each pass it makes, sprouts of Dabria wither away with cries that almost go unheard beneath the sound of the fuel that burns them. As the stream of fire passes, another is ignited. Then another, and another. Footmen walk along Maciofim's outskirts as they incinerate all that they can, but the efforts remain futile. No matter the work they get done on this night, the next will be more of the same. Within the city, tired eyes and hushed whispers fill the streets as homes remain in disrepair and food becomes more scarce with every passing moment. However, faith serves as a guide and The Bethel's lower floors remain full of life. With the rebels and Craws all but forgotten, peace- though felt only in spurts- befalls the hallowed walls.Beyond the brick and mortar, cast aside by the city, a small fire burns bright. Its flames lick at poisonous air and whisk away what infection approaches, but it does nothing of t
Marne observes a growing crowd. Along with the growing crowd is a growing flame, where many books have already found themselves to be set alight. More join them as each member of Farrow's rebellion arrives, donating a piece of text as they come, before finding their place amongst the others. Marne begins to feel saddened by what he has come to witness thus far, acknowledging that with each page that turns to embers, rare knowledge is forever lost."Beautiful, is it not?" Comes the excited voice of Farrow, who rubs his palms together and peers off at a resting sun, which begins to set behind him. "The time has nearly come to bring Great things to an end."Marne looks about The Bethel's roof once more, then to Farrow."Nothing about this feels right."Farrow drops the smile he has been fashioning, then looks to his son."Have you had a change of heart?""No, I mean, nothing feels right without the others being present.""Ah, of course! Of course." Farrow chuckles with relief, allowing h
