Standing at the center of this trial, Erica's doe- shaped eyes welled up with tears. In the middle of the collective mockery and disdain, she had hoped for a hero to step forward and rescue her from this living nightmare.
Instead, all she had was Nate, who had also embarrassed her even more by making such an absurd proposal. Why did he have to come here, when she was already trying to make the best of the situation by negotiating with her relatives?
Forget being her knight in shining armor, he had proven that he was nothing more than a clown?!
Her hands tightened into fists as she tried to control her raging emotions, but her frustration and disappointment were carved on her face. These taunts and words were hurting her deeper than any physical wound.
Meanwhile, the family members continued to mock Nate;
"Have you finally lost whatever little brain you were unfortunately born with?"
"I think you need to be reminded of who you are and which dirty hole you crawled out of! Is it a joke to you, that our family is going through such a hard time?"
"Don't forget that if our family suffers financially, then there is no hope for a leech like you!"
Despite her silent pleas, no one in the room stepped up to defend Nate or to put an end to the relentless mockery as Erica's resentment continued to grow.
She had reached her breaking point; and finally, she was unable to stay quiet. Erica turned towards Nate, and her voice pierced through the laughter.
"Leave, NOW!"
She commanded, pointing towards the door with her jaw clenched in anger. The room fell silent for a moment, the weight of her words hanging in the air.
Meanwhile, the people who had gathered there for a critical situation, were enjoying the fact that Erica had finally asserted her dominance on Nate.
"That's right, you rascal! Finally, Erica has also shown you your real place in this household, now are you leaving or do I need to come there and kick you out?"
"Didn't you hear her? Just be a good doggy and obey your mistress! Shoo, shoo now!"
But in spite of all the cruel words being thrown at him, Nate's focus didn't waver from Erica's face even for a moment.
And his own heart stopped for a moment when he saw the pain she was hiding in her heart; but it was clearly visible in her eyes.
Everything that had been said to him by her family, he could easily let it all slide. In fact, he could even assume that she had asked him to leave, because she was not in control of her anger and not because she actually wanted him to leave.
But what actually hurt him more than anything else, was the fact that she was suffering– and he had added a layer of humiliation to her suffering by coming there.
It was like his mind was caught in a storm, where his thoughts and emotions were colliding with each other and causing dangerous explosions.
He had never expected things to go like this, and his brain had gone totally blank all of a sudden.
With the fog of hurt and confusion clouding his consciousness, Nate found himself moving farther away from Erica with each moment. The details of how exactly he left the hall remained blurry, but his gaze lingered on Erica until the last possible moment.
And before he knew it, his legs had carried him outside the hall, near the backyard of the mansion, just a few feet away from the gate.
Feeling both hopeless and heartless, he decided to leave the McKinney family estate for a while, until he was in a state to come back and face his wife.
But as soon as Nate reached the gate, his phone unexpectedly started to ring, pulling him out of his thoughts and bringing his steps to a stop.
The caller ID just showed 'Private Number', which gave him an uncanny feeling.
Even though his mind was telling him that nothing good could come out of this phone call, he still answered, somewhat hesitantly.
"Hello, who is this?"
"Oh, thank the heavens! I have finally managed to contact you, Sir!"
Nate was frozen in place, unable to believe what was going on. He had heard the familiar voice of his old housekeeper, Uncle Simon, but there was some part of him that absolutely refused to accept this.
Just listening to his voice sent a shiver down Nate's spine, bringing up the memories of a life he had chosen to leave behind.
"Sir Nathaniel, can you hear me?"
Uncle Simon asked with his excitement evident in his voice. That title…that name… everything felt foreign to Nate after years of separation. But he managed to hum in response, which was enough for the moment.
"Oh, thank God! I thought I had lost the connection again. Sir, this is Simon Prescot, your old housekeeper at the mansion. Please forgive me, Master, I forgot to introduce myself in the excitement and disbelief that I was finally speaking to you."
Hearing this, Nate managed to force a polite smile in response.
"No no, it's okay, Uncle Simon. I recognize you, but how did you find me?"
The old housekeeper's words spilled out with an eagerness that bordered on relief.
"It can only be called the Grace of God, sir. Because I never thought that my old and tired self would get the blessing of speaking to you in this lifetime."Although Uncle Simon seemed to be relieved, Nate was feeling more and more anxious. For three years, Nate had been a ghost to his family– he hadn't heard a single word from them. In response, he had also never bothered to reach out to anyone.
But now, uncle Simon had called him out of the blue? It just seemed too sudden, and Nate didn't have any idea if it was a good thing that he had received this call, or if some kind of bad news was waiting for him on the other side.
Finally, when he could not deal with the uncertainty any longer, Nate decided to cut to the chase.
"Uncle Simon, if they have managed to prove that I am guilty, then I am ready to come back home. And I am willing to face the punishment; don't worry, I'm not going to run away–"
"Master, why are you saying all this?"
Uncle Simon interrupted Nate in the middle, almost like he was speaking gibberish.
After a brief pause, he said softly, almost to himself, "Oh, you really haven't heard about it then…"
He continued with some excitement;
"Sir, there is not a single soul on earth who can dare to punish you anymore. You have inherited all your family wealth, as well as the position of the Head of the family!"The housekeeper's words had acted as a catalyst, transporting Nate back to the day when his life had gone upside down. Three years ago, the household's usual routine had been shattered when the old man fell unconscious on his way to an important board meeting, and the results of a primary examination showed an attempt to position him.Chaos erupted in the household and he was rushed to the hospital; as soon as the old man was admitted into the ICU, the family members started pointing fingers and shouting in anger and disbelief. Meanwhile, Nate was sitting in a quiet corner of the ICU, sulking by himself. He was wondering who could have committed such an act against his grandfather, watching his family accuse each other without a second thought. But suddenly, he heard his own name being pulled into the middle of this ruckus. One of his aunts shouted through tears,"Nate! He was the one who took the tray of coffee and snacks to his grandfather's room this morning; I saw it with my o
As Nate watched his wife and mother-in-law walk away, he felt a sense of urgency and anxiety. With every step, they were moving farther away from him, and he wanted nothing more than to run up to them and clarify the situation, so that the misunderstanding could be stopped right there. But at the same time, he knew there was no point in going after them, if they had already made up their minds about him. Most importantly, even if he narrated the whole situation regarding his grandfather and the dark stain of blame on his reputation, that had just been cleared up… what were the chances that they would believe him? What if they declared him as a crazy liar, just like their relatives had just dismissed his offer for help just some moments ago? Going to them and making such claims without having any proof in his hands was a recipe for disaster, as it would negatively impact his reputation and their trust in him. It was at this moment that a sudden idea sparked in his mind. He saw a
As Nate stood there, feeling the sting of Justin's mocking remarks, anger and humiliation coursed through him. Initially, he had been somewhat happy to meet an old classmate in such an unexpected setting. But that joy had quickly transformed into bitterness, ruined by the mockery hidden under the disguise of catching up. His face darkened as he realized the true intentions behind Justin's words, and he wanted to give him a fitting reply cutting retort, one that would make both Justin and his snobby girlfriend shut up. But there was something else nagging at his mind, reminding him that he was here for something more important. First of all, he needed to take control of the company, secure the future of his wife's family and stop her from making the decision of marrying someone else. Compared to these concerns, the two clowns standing in front of him didn't seem important at all. So, he simply decided to pay attention to his priority and ignore Justin's comments.Still, on hearin
The smug smile on Justin's face was causing Nate's temper to rise. It was clearly his unlucky day today, because this leech named Justin had stuck to him today without any reason, and refused to leave him alone now. But he still managed to keep his cool. Instead of wiping that grin off of his face like he really wanted to, Nate cocked one eyebrow at the receptionist. With a sneer, he spoke up in a challenging tone;"Well, I could leave right now, if you really insist. But remember: you absolutely shouldn't beg me to come back later, under any circumstances."As soon as he said this, Justin burst out into laughter, dismissing Nate's statement with a condescending tone."What did you just say! Beg you? What a silly man you are! Hahaha, do you really think we will get scared on hearing this?" The receptionist, who was the primary audience for their exchange, shifted uncomfortably in her seat. She turned her gaze towards the ground, feeling a sense of second-hand embarrassment for Nate.
Chapter 9."You told me to get out of here yourself. Told me that I didn't belong here and had no interest in meeting anyone," Nate said in a high voice that echoed throughout the room.Clara who had thought Nate was an ordinary person could only remain silent, biting her lip in fear, afraid that she would also get into trouble from her attitude a few minutes ago. Especially now, she saw the vice president who looked so uncomfortable and angry with Nate's explanation."Is that true, Mr. Miller?" she asked in an annoyed tone. Her eyes narrowed at Justin."No, Miss Adams. I can explain what happened before. This is all just a misunderstanding. It's not like you heard-"Before he could finish his sentence, Nate interrupted him with an equally annoyed tone."So, in this case, I'm at fault for lying and saying things that aren't true? This could just as easily be considered as ruining someone's good name. Isn't that right?" Nate's stinging words sent Justin into a tizzy. He couldn't even b
"No! Pleaseeee...please...." Justin squealed loudly as Nate was about to walk away from him and quickly pulled his hand away. He was crying hysterically from the fear of losing the only job he had. And at all costs, he would try to keep it even if he had to kneel pleadingly before Nate."It's useless. I can't help you not get fired," Nate said, rolling his eyes lazily. He looked at poor Justin who was crying nonstop. Clutching his arms with both trembling hands. It was obvious he was frustrated and terrified of losing his job."What do you want? I'll do it! Kneel at your feet and beg? I'll do it! But please, don't let me get fired. This is the only job I have. If I get fired, what will happen to me," Justin sobbed. He continued to hold onto Nate's arm despite his attempts to break free."That's enough-"Before Nate could finish his sentence, he was shocked with wide eyes when he saw Justin kneeling in front of him. With cries so loud they could be heard throughout the room. Heard by a
Morgan ended her phone call with Simon after he finished explaining the situation to her. Still in shock and disbelief, she looked at Nate who was smiling meaningfully at her. So casually sitting in the chair as if he was waiting for the surprised look on her face."So, did you get your answer? Should I move to the couch to sit?" Nate asked in a teasing tone."Sorry for my attitude just now. Mr. Simon has explained everything to me, though I'm still surprised by this," she confessed."No problem. It's only natural that you've been working with Uncle Simon for so long and suddenly an unknown young man becomes president of the company," Nate said. He got up from his chair, walking over to Morgan with both hands in his pants pockets. "You're Morgan Adams, right?""Yes, sir," she replied."I'll introduce myself more properly and clearly. I am Nathaniel Pemberly who will be the president of this company from today," he said loudly and with authority. "I hope we can work well together from
"Mr. Nathaniel, I've told them what I have to say. In a week, they will re-prepare the proposal they showed us earlier," Morgan began speaking to Nate after she hung up the phone with the Starry White Company."Did they sound enthusiastic?" Nate asked with great curiosity. He hoped that it was Erica, his wife, talking to Morgan. And made sure that she knew that her nearly bankrupt company was helped by this partnership."Yes, sir. They were very happy to hear the news I gave them. They will do their best to prepare the proposal, and they will also do their best for our partnership," Morgan explained with a smile."Good. That's good to hear. Thank you, Miss Adams," Nate said, then."Yes, sir. You can call me Morgan if you like. Mr. Simon always calls me that," she said."Morgan?" repeated Nate in a low voice. "Sounds good," he said then."Yes, sir. That's much better." Morgan smiled slightly before speaking again. "So, have you set a day to meet with the Starry White Company?" Morgan a
