Zachary's POV
"Hey, there, handsome!" Celestine greeted me the second she answered my video call request, her voice warm through the speakers, especially when she had this gorgeous Italian accent that sounded music to my ears. I gulped the water and cold air that was stuck inside my throat before I smiled and responded, "Hi, babe. Thank you for answering my call right away. What are you up to right now? Am I not disturbing you?" Celestine reclined back into what looked like her cozy living room couch, a neat and familiar background that I knew all too well, "Of course not, honey. Just a quiet night in my new condo, watching K-dramas online, and missing you so much." she replied. Her clouded eyes freckled with obsidian met mine, allowing me to witness such a heavenly-crafted masterpiece even if I saw her every day, one of the reasons I fell in love with her like crazy. "Missed you too, Celestine. But I thought I saw your friends posting a big night out today. Are you sure you're not feeling left out?" No matter how hard it was for me to remain calm, my arms and legs kept on shivering out of too much anger and disappointment. "Nah," Celestine chuckled, showing those two gorgeous deep dimples engraved next to her lips, any man can fall for it. I, for one, couldn't resist her charm. "They're just out for a drink, babe. I wanted to talk to you instead. Shantell's handling my social obligations." "That's good to hear, babe," I replied, starting to grit my teeth in disbelief she could do such a thing to me. "I can see that your eyelids were about to fall. You better get back to your room to have a comfortable sleep, okay?" "Yeah, sure. Are you in our room right now? Why is your background so dark?" she asked, "Anyway, don't forget to switch on the AC, okay? I know you are not comfortable sleeping with it switched off." Before confessing the truth, I gradually turned my head behind me, terrified that once I removed my attention away from her, I might miss out on something from her convincing drama. Everything I see behind me apart from the utter darkness that surrounds me is the street lights, cars whooshing at the speed of light, and people wandering the bustling streets. But I highly doubt she could notice a thing. So I nodded in agreement with her assumption. "Don't worry about me, babe. You should worry about yourself since I am not in the condo to cook your meals." My furious eyes started pouring out of anger and hatred toward myself for not knowing and being blind not to see it for the past three years since we got married. "Nah, don't worry about me, babe. I'm a big boy now, remember? Anyway, good night, Zachary. I love you so much, always remember that, okay? Couldn't wait to see you tomorrow." Celestine kissed the screen of her phone to make it more pleasing and convincing. Getting a kiss and hearing the magic words, 'I Love You', especially coming from the woman whom I love the most was supposed to put me in seventh heaven, a butterfly in my stomach, and music to my ears. Contrary to those sugary and flowering words, I was there, standing outside in front of the restaurant, trembling in too much anger, witnessing her fucking lies. She already lied to me that her flight back to New York from her business trip would be on the next day. Now, this. Having a party with her circle of friends. This was too much for me to handle. Rage burned inside every fiber of my well-being while looking at them and having fun fooling me around. Before Celestine answered the video call earlier, she ordered all her friends to shut their mouths. Imagine when her best friend, Shantell, held a piece of cloth, the same color as the curtain we had in her condo's living room, to cover the settings of the restaurant, perfectly fitting the size of my phone screen. Chester, on the other hand, quickly covered her body with a blanket and held the tiny pillow to look like she was indeed resting in her condo the way she claimed in our video call. Her evil friends were all up to her lies and crimes as if they already predicted it to happen that I would reach out to my wife in the middle of their party. No. They planned it all along and my wife was the sole mastermind of this ridiculous scheme. I mean, who could not think that way? They were in the restaurant, having a party, yet they brought a pillow, blanket, and curtain with them. For what? To make me feel like a fool? So right after the video call ended, Shantell and Chester removed everything they put from Celestine and continued the fun, sipping off their bottles of beer, and making up a conversation as if nothing happened. Just like that. "You love me, my foot!" I could not help but utter profanity while clenching the phone harder as if it was about to bend in a matter of seconds. Just when I was about to slide to the door, to confront her, Sebastian, my best friend, slid to their table and grabbed his seat next to Celestine. The next thing he did caught me off guard when he passionately kissed her on the lips, ignoring the fact that they were in front of their friends, causing me to step back. My heart pounded in my chest as I stood frozen behind the glass wall. The scene unfolded in slow motion right before my eyes, shattering my world into a million pieces. The betrayal cut deep, like a double-edged sword piercing through my heart. I had trusted both of them completely, to the point that I treated Sebastian as my older brother. I told him everything about me and my wife, even the smallest thing about our marriage, and I gave him some pieces of advice on how to win a woman's heart. But how? How can he do this to me? Tears streamed down my face, desperate to escape the devastating reality. My vision blurred in the blink of an eye when Celestine kissed him back, and she was even getting a kick out of the moment. Since when did the two start to have an affair behind my back? How on earth did I miss out to see this? Why did Sebastian - my best friend, could betray me like this? Those were the questions that kept running wild inside my helpless heart and brain as I started having a hard time breathing while absorbing the unbelievable sight that caught my eye. My arms and legs were stiffened like steel even if the pouring rain started soaking me. "When are you going to tell him about our relationship, Celestine?" Sebastian asked right after they removed their lips from each other. "Don't worry about it, babe," she reassured him while caressing his cheek with a smile on her face. Celestine and I have been in an intimate marriage for almost four years but I haven't seen her smiling purely from ear to ear like that until tonight. I saw her smile once, back on our wedding day, but she was not as happy as she was while with Sebastian. Celestine was the type of woman whose smile and laughter were as expensive as a piece of diamond. You need more than a piece of good news to be able to see her smile. But with just a simple glance from Sebastian, he smiled wholeheartedly, making me question myself, why? What does he have I don't have. On top of those questions; where did I go wrong for them to betray me? "Give me two days, Sebastian. I'm waiting for the perfect opportunity to break up with him," she added, "Zachary has no hold over me. Once he signs the divorce paper, we can be together. And I promise to give you everything you need, okay?" I quickly rolled my eyes upon seeing Chester and Shantell's startled expression looking at me shivering behind the glass wall across from them, making everyone turn their faces at me, including Celestine and Sebastian. Despite the freezing temperature outside the restaurant due to the pouring rain, the burning of my blood dominated everything. It's the overwhelming rage and disappointment that helped me control the shivering. But I have heard and seen enough from them. The truth and lies of their hidden affairs, stabbing me with a sharp knife a million times. So I mustered the courage to lift my feet and reach for the doorknob of the restaurant. All their friends departed from their seats the moment I stepped foot inside. Without asking further questions, I punched Sebastian in the face. Hard enough he moaned out of pain and shut everyone's mouth. "I trusted you with everything, Sebastian. Because I thought you were my best friend. After everything I did to you. How can you --?" I cut off my words when Celestine snatched him away from me as if she was blocking me before everything got out of hand. He didn't fight back, telling everyone that he was the victim and I was the protagonist of their love story. The audacity to play the victim in this kind of situation when it was supposed to be me, claiming as Celestine's legal husband. "You can't blame me, Zachary. It's your fucking fault you're poor and useless. You failed to give everything your wife desired," he conceded, his loud voice caught everyone's attention, not just their friends, but everyone who dined in the restaurant. "It's not my fault that your wife found that missing piece that can make her happy in me instead of you. And she loves me more than she does for you." "What?" I frowned in disbelief, a sharp thorn was stuck inside my throat as he slapped me with the truth. "What do you think you're doing, huh, Zachary? How did you know that I'm here?" Celestine growled at me for the first time, demanding an answer, her eyes were even filled with rage while pointing at me, and her veins popped out of her neck. Celestine was supposed to at least apologize or explain everything to me since they were already busted, but she deprived me of hearing it. Instead, she put Sebastian behind her and faced me as if she had chosen her side of the story. "Aren't I supposed to be the one asking you that, huh, Celestine? I saw and caught everything you and your friends did earlier. You kissed him even if you are already married to me." I debated, trying to be as professional as I am despite the hard time weighing things, then walked my gaze at Chester and Shantell with disgust. The two dropped their eyes to their feet, guilty for what they did. I was about to grab Sebastian's collar when I was not yet done with his betrayal but Celestine held my hands and pushed me back. Hard enough I shoved my face to the tiled floor and moaned out of pain. And there was no trace of regret in her eyes even after seeing me crawling on the floor. None of their friends dared to help me up as if they were more afraid of what she could do to them. "Stop this nonsense, Zachary. You're already making a scene. And you're embarrassing me to my friends!" Right after that, she grabbed my hands again and dragged me out of the restaurant by force. She pushed me inside her car next to her in the driver's seat and took off right away without contemplating. Thirty minutes later, we reached the parking lot of her parents' mansion. Most of the security guards were taken aback when she dragged me out of the car by force. But no one dared make a comment or do something to help me. She let go of her grasp as soon as she locked the door of our room. "Since we are on this matter already --" she cut off her words in the middle of his statement, grabbed a piece of white envelope from her closet, and slapped them on me. "Sign the divorce paper for our son's sake." "What?" I blurted. We were no longer in front of his friends, so I raised my voice, it was the least I could do for myself. But my heart sank into the bottom of the ocean as I realized my marriage was coming to an end. I stared at her, searching for any hint of hesitation, of regret. Unfortunately, I couldn't see any of them apart from her furious eyes. "You heard me right, Zachary. I'm now putting an end to this endless nightmare you brought me. To this disappointing marriage. And removing the thorns in my life is the best way to do it. So, consider this a threat if you don't want me to disown our son as well."The last thing I could hope for for our three-year-old son, Noah, was to jeopardize his future and get disowned by her mother. I have no permanent job to earn money, family, friends to depend on, or even a house to bestow my son a better future compared to what her mother could offer. So I learned real quick to swallow my pride. I dropped to my knees without question. "Please, don't do this to me, Celestine. I'm begging you!" then I crept toward her heels, rubbing them to ease off the pain - my pain. "Everything is my fault. I'm so sorry, okay? Please, give me another chance. Swear to God, I will make it up to you." "Enough, you useless son of a bitch!" She kicked me out of her feet which resulted in me stumbling on the tiled floor. I moaned from too much pain when my head hit the concrete wall. "Make sure to affix your signature before you leave this place, Zachary. Do you understand?" "But, honey, please, give me one last chance, please?" I pleaded continuously. "I swear, I wil
After what felt like an eternity, I gradually opened my eyes and was taken aback as I found myself lying on the bed in a huge and freezing but unfamiliar room. Startled, I lifted half of my body when I finally came to my senses that a man in a suit, probably, in his sixties, had been secretly peeking at me from the corner. He then dropped the newspapers he was holding and slid toward the bed. Before he could do so, I lifted the pristine white-scented blanket and covered it around my face, too scared that he might do something bad. "Good afternoon, Young Master. Don't be scared. I have no intention of hurting you, in fact, I brought you here because that was what you requested before you collapsed last night..." As he kept on talking, I tried to recall what had happened before I collapsed. I remember running away from the mansion and feeling a wave of dizziness engulfing me, everything going hazy. Until someone's car bumped into me. But everything has been made clear to me now.
"What do you want from me, Ms. Lincoln? I'm a bit busy right now. And you're not worth my minute anymore." I asked as I tried to stay as calm as possible. As much as it pains me, I swallowed my pride and slapped those words on her smooth innocent face. I had to show her that I was no longer the man she once knew. Then I ordered my security guards to let her go, not because I felt pity for her, or because she was Celestine's older sister, but because I didn't want people to have the wrong idea about me. Undeniably, I still love her so much, in fact, I cannot deny that there are no nights I haven't thought about all the good things that happened between us, especially when we had our son, but I already have had enough of my suffering in their hands for the past three years. Celestine stood up without getting any help from my security guards. "Is it true that you had an affair with her? Since when? Was it before we broke up?" she asked, ignoring the fact that her s
Based on my quick observation, Jelian and Julian's shoes were still as good as new. I still have perfect eyesight, so I could tell their shoes were ruined, dirtied, or soaked. "Don't give us that kind of look, you ungrateful cleaners!" Jelian grasped the middle-aged woman's chin, clenching it harder as she moaned in pain. "Answer me! How are you going to compensate us, huh?" "I'm so sorry," says the middle-aged woman. "But I'm afraid we cannot afford to pay you a million dollars. Can we just clean them up and return it to you?" To my surprise, the two janitors dropped to their knees and shoved their faces to the tiled floor to extend their sincere apologies. The scenario took a trip down memory lane on the same day Jelian and Julian did the same thing for me. Jelian was about to slap the middle-aged woman but my conscience had had enough of them. I didn't get the chance to defend myself three years ago because I was just a mere houseboy to them, but I now have the
No. I highly doubt it. They could have hated me even more if they had known my true identity. After all, our families were mortal business enemies. There's no way they would be kneeling before me right now. Not that I hated the idea as it was what I certainly wanted to see but their actions were too suspicious. So I gradually lifted my feet toward my desk and dropped my butt on the chair. Then I dig deeper into my brain on what to do in this kind of situation. "You two shouldn't be doing this for me, Mr. and Mrs. Lincoln," I spoke up after considering things. "You should be begging Ms. Jennie Pineda, or should I call her, 'your illegitimate daughter' when she was the one who helped me acquire on buying the majority shares." "What?" Mr. Lincoln frowned the way I expected. "You heard me loud and clear, Mr. Lincoln. Your daughter Jennie was the one who invested the ten billion dollars. She simply let me have the position because we made a deal." who could have thought
And I plan to keep it that way. I don't want them to know a thing or two about what the hell is going on with my life right now, especially with the fact that I already returned to my parents and allied with them for good. They were too old enough and vulnerable. I know the two folks will not shut their mouths once they find something harmful and wrong to me. Needless to say, Grandmother hated the thought of me getting any kind of support from my parents. It's a long story, but my grandparents were also kicked out of the family because they opposed Dad's way of living and addressing problems and concerns, the same thing that happened to me. "Good evening, Mrs. Llamas." Jennie finally spoke up. "My name is Jennie Penida, and I am Zachary's secretary. If you are scared that something is going on between me and your grandson, please, don't bother. He's not even my type." "See, Grams? You heard her too, right? I'm not even her type, though I don't know why when I ha
A part of me wanted to laugh at the statement when I found it completely ridiculous, however, Grandmother's expression was too profound. Her eyes are sharp without any trace of bluff. "Anyway, you may now get back to your room," she added. "It's already late. We'll catch up tomorrow." then she left right after Grandfather clapped my shoulders. Grandmother's motherly piece of advice cut deeper into my conscience. No matter how hard I tried to understand the situation, I still found it too good to be true. I have no feelings for Jennie. Not a chance. We agreed to be a couple in front of the Lincolns and Stroems, but I am putting a boundary between us. She's my secretary. And I can proceed with my plan with or without her. While I was lost in thought, the phone next to my head suddenly rang. This time, it was no longer a message notification but a call. When I caught a glimpse of the phone screen, I frowned when the call came from John Dave. "Hey, it's me, John
It only took a matter of seconds for the members of the group chat to jot down their votes. Imagine my surprise when out of one hundred sixty members, seventy-five percent permitted me to join. Two people who disagreed to oust me from the reunion were Sebastian and Chester. And because they disagreed, the majority of the members joined them without asking further questions, making the count to seventy-five percent. "I think the answer was quite pretty obvious." Sebastian typed. "See you later, @ZacharyLlamas. You better show up because you had my vote and so did the majority, do you understand?" "Perhaps he should bring the woman, right?" one of the students suggested. "I mean, this is what the reunion is all about. For us to introduce our girlfriends, other halves, or even kids." "Just give him the benefit of the doubt, dude. But it would be better if he brought his sugar mommy to the reunion for us to check up on her." "What's wrong, Mr. Fisher?" Jennie bro
"At the count of five, you'd better leave the mansion if you dont want to see me in my beast mode!" Dad added before he slammed the surface of the table, which resulted in some of the plates and glasses nearby falling and breaking into pieces after dropping to the tiled floor. Before he could start the counting, everyone, including Mom and my cousins, evacuated the room in the blink of an eye. Their worries and fears have left marks in the air. I was about to follow them outside when Dad growled at me to stay on my spot. Dad was known for being calm and profound. Every time he gets mad about something, he prefers to address the situation in silence instead of threatening or yelling at us. Today was probably the first time that he let everyone see his wrath. "Bring that woman in an instant, Zachary!" Dad growled. "If you don't want me to kill that woman, you better bring that woman in front of me. Don't you dare trick me this time? I'm giving you ten minutes!" The ten-minute alloca
"Well, I mean..." he added, his voice calm but sharp. However, this time, his curious eyes were fixed on us in the backseat since the car had already stopped moving in the middle of the road. "Rumors in the office have it that the two of you were dating. Everything I heard was just rumors, wasn't it?" Jennie and I exchanged glances, both waiting for someone to speak up and tell the truth or lie to Mr. Randolph. "What you heard was not just rumors, Mr. Randolph. Jennie and I..." I paused for a few seconds to muster the courage to speak up. "We're married already. And we haven't told anyone about it apart from you." Mr. Randolph lowered his eyes to my hand as I reached Jennie's and rested them on my chest, showing off to him our wedding rings on our fingers. He will know about it eventually, so there's no point in hiding it. "God damn it, Zachary! What were you thinking, huh? Do you think marrying someone will solve something here?" Mr. Randolph yelled at us for the fi
The two followed and kept their distance behind me, similar to lost puppies. But I know their sharp eyes were fixed on me as if they were going to stab me with a knife. "Didn't she tell you she's going to cook dinner for all of us? Julian and Jelian will be joining, too. We hope you dont mind." Divina asked. "Not unless you two already told them about my identity, didn't you? I hope that won't be the case." I said sharply. "Because that would only fuel the rage and hatred I had for this disgusting family." "O-of co-course not, Young Master!" Roger obviously stuttered. "We may be the worst in-laws, but we already learned our lesson. Rest assured that your secret is safe with us, right, honey?" Divina nodded her head without asking further questions, making me feel at ease. As soon as we reached the kitchen, I was taken aback when someone I barely expected was helping Celestine. "Zachary, what are you doing here? Aren't you supposed to be in your class right now?
And undeniably, a part of me wanted her to stay as long as she wanted. I'm not stopping her. Needless to say, I missed her so badly even if none of us could turn back time. I wanted to hug her in my arms tightly until she felt suffocated and play my lips with her just like the old days. But I was controlling every fiber of my muscle that wanted to do all that. A lot of things changed between us. I have already vowed to spend the rest of my life with Jennie, making her the happiest woman in the world. Above all that, we promised to be the best version of being parents for our son. "I dont know what the hell is going on inside your head, Celestine, but I believe your parents could have told you that we are no longer a couple, aren't they?" I replied sharply while pretending to be busy at my desk to avoid making eye-to-eye contact with her. She nodded. "Indeed, Mom and Dad told me that we were no longer a couple before I lost my memories. They were the ones who told me y
"That's enough, gentlemen!" Mom spoke up. "Someone died and yet you are blaming each other. Aren't we supposed to blame the one who killed them and find justice? Let go of him!" "We're so sorry, Mrs. Fisher." one of Dad's bodyguards replied, his voice barely audible. Without asking further questions, they let go of their clasp from me and strode to the corner. "Zachary, we are here to pay respect to Mom and Dad." Mom uttered, her eyes swelling up. "Your dad even canceled his appointments just to visit them." Right. Mom loves Grams and Gramps as far as I can remember. She was once a devoted daughter to them before she married Dad. She barely spoke every time Dad was taking over the floor. But her life turned into a living hell since they got me. There was this one night when she attempted to run away from the mansion - away from Dad, but she failed drastically. She was locked up for a few months in the dungeon similar to a prisoner. That's how wicked Dad really wa
Our uncertain journey began when Jennie and I nervously sat on the couch in front of Dad's desk while waiting for him to get back from his meeting. "There's still time for a change of heart, Mr. Fisher." Jennie broke the deafening silence and towering wall that divided us. "I'll be giving you ten seconds to evacuate the room before the chairman arrives. And before you would regret it for the rest of your life." Regret. Did she think I might regret something for the rest of my life if I tied the knot with her? Perhaps she already noticed or heard the sound of my racing heartbeats. "One." she began counting. "Two." I joined her counting inside my brain. "Three." "Four." "Five." Reaching this far, my heart skipped a beat for a few seconds, attempting to consider her proposal. I still have five more to be able to run away. If and only Noah could talk and understand the situation his confused father is going through, I could have called him and sought his
None of them even considered the fact that the statement was also applicable to me. "Someone like me, that's completely ridiculous!" I could not help but scoff inwardly in disbelief. Well. What else could I say? All my cousins were born with a silver spoon in their mouths. Lucas managed to achieve his dream at a young age. He became the CEO of his own company, and his parents could be proud of his achievement. His achievements also helped his sister, Layne, to achieve her dreams. She got all kinds of support from her brother and parents, either love, financial, or even connections. My other cousins, Mark and Chris, have grown well as well. Their parents supported all their dreams. None of them experienced being in my shoes. To get humiliated, mocked, degraded, and kicked out of the family. It's easier for them to say "Someone like her" because they know nothing about Jennie. I was about to defend Jennie when one of the housemaids of the mansion approached me and whispe
I slightly crouched closer to her with the hope of having a better look at her face but to my surprise, she cracked her eyes open. Startled, with no way of escape, I closed my eyes and kissed her on the lips. "What are you doing?" she whispered to make sure Noah would not wake up. "Go-good night kiss?" I defensively uttered right after I removed my face from her face. Then I cleared my throat to avoid the stuttering of my voice when I was about to add, "Good night, Jennie. Thanks for keeping an eye on my son. You can now get back to your room." Gladly, Jennie didn't ask for further questions about the kiss even if I knew she had all the right to confront me. What I did could have startled her too. She could have bombarded me with questions but she chose to shut her mouth and evacuated the room. I guess we're even now. She kissed me before, so I was simply returning the favor. The next day, I woke up alone on the bed. Worries and fears sent shivers down my spine when
Startled, Jennie hurried to my spot and helped me up. "Zach, are you alright?" she asked before she yelled at her brother, "Julian, do you have any idea what you just do, huh? Are you out of your mind?" "Come on, sister Jennie. That bastard deserved to get beaten, not just a single punch." Jelian hissed back. "Do you even have the slightest idea what that moron did to our family? You should stay away from that monster before your life gets ruined as well." "You should leave this place in an instant, Zachary," Julian ordered. "You, of all people, should know better that most, if not all of us, hated and disagreed about you being part of the outing." "As much as it pains you, Julian, but you can't just shoo Zachary out of this place." Jennie defended me, her voice sharp and sounded scary for the first time. "To begin with, he was not here to join your class outing. We also had our company outing in the same place and time as yours. In fact, we are in the middle of playin
