Riley dashed through the muddy terrain, feeling like a gust of wind, freer and faster than ever before.
"Is this what being an Awakener feels like every time?" he pondered, leaping effortlessly to a treetop.
With an adventurous smile, he removed his gauntlets and dove headfirst into the ground, channeling his strength into the impact.
Dust filled the air as Riley landed, astonished to find his hands unscathed save for a few scratches.
"I would have surely fractured something before awakening," he mused, slowly adapting to his newfound abilities.
Despite not mastering his path's powers, he could already sense the flow of aura transforming into something new within him — chi.
Riley felt a surge of power, earning him "+5 Exp" and a sense of satisfaction.
Suddenly, a distant sound caught his attention — the growl of murlocs. Equipping his gauntlets with a thought, Riley charged towards them, swiftly dispatching the creatures with deadly precision.
Riley got better at fighting after battling all day, earning him "+10 Exp" and a stronger connection to his chi.
"Combat's the best way for me to train," he thought, ready to take on tougher foes. But, he soon faced a tough peak stage 1 Murloc.
They fought hard, each landing blows. But Riley started to struggle against the relentless attacks. "I gotta figure something out," he gasped, seeing a sneaky look in the murloc's eyes.
The murloc was fast, it tossed a spear that went into Riley's body, missing his heart by a bit. Because it was moving so fast, it went through and came out his back, making a big hole.
"Ahh," Riley cried from the pain and quickly grabbed the tail that hit his head.
The murloc screamed and tried to punch him in a panic. But Riley wanted it to do that. The murloc's arms were shorter, so it took longer to reach him than the spear.
Riley took advantage of that tiny moment and grabbed the murloc's neck super fast, crushing it.
He broke its neck while its fist hit his stomach.
Riley held his stomach, feeling the pain. Then, he coughed hard, spitting out blood. He could feel his insides shaking because of the hole...
Looking down, Riley observed the gaping hole in his chest, drenched in blood and chaos.
"System, how am I?" Riley inquired, seeking an update on his condition.
Riley's status displayed "Exp +30, Body Path stage 1: 50/100, 5.5% Greater Human".
The status panel blinked, and Riley sensed his body's chi increasing. He felt stronger, and his bleeding slowed. Though he couldn't see it, he sensed his healing getting better.
For a moment, Riley was thrilled, but then the pain from the battle reminded him of the struggle he just endured. "Curse you, system," he grumbled, frustrated by the uneExpected encounter with a peak stage 1 Murloc.
According to the island's records, only stage 1 Murlocs inhabited it, none reaching the peak of stage 1. That's why Riley chose this island for training—to improve without risking his life. However, luck—or perhaps misfortune—led him to face a murloc that had just reached the peak.
When the murloc targeted him, Riley had no escape. Fight or die—it was his only option.
Perhaps this was what the system meant by facing danger to "pay" for the opportunities it offered. The price of growth was constant peril.
"But... no matter what this world throws at me, I'll emerge stronger," Riley vowed, gritting his teeth as he stood up.
Despite the excruciating pain, Riley knew his wound wasn't fatal. "Surviving after defeating your enemy... that's impressive. Am I overpowered?" he mused, attempting to smile despite the pain.
"Isha, take me to the nearby emergency healing center," he commanded his comm and AI.
"Yes, sir. We'll arrive in 5 minutes," Isha replied promptly.
The hover bike descended, and Riley boarded, heading to the emergency healing center. As darkness enveloped him, the pain lessened, replaced by a nagging itch that eventually subsided.
Upon waking, Riley found the medi bot leaving his hover bike and entering the floating emergency treatment complex.
"How long has it been?" he inquired.
"2 hours, sir. I instructed the medibot to treat you here to avoid disturbing your rest," Isha informed him.
Riley checked himself and found no signs of injuries. "Medical technology is truly remarkable. In the old Earth's days, it would take months to heal such wounds, but now it's done in a few hours," he remarked, feeling rejuvenated yet disheartened by the hefty bill.
"Unfortunately, their bills... are terrible," Riley lamented, recalling his depleted savings. I must earn more points," Riley resolved, acknowledging the necessity of bolstering his resources.
Before The Crypt Dud, Old Earth was a time when people still used 5G and worried about AI domination. It was idealized by historians and the public, despite its outdated technology.
Riley couldn't help but ponder the irony of longing for Old Earth's simplicity while facing financial struggles in the present. "The grass is always greener on the other side, eh?" he muttered, shaking his head.
As he lamented his dwindling funds, Riley considered the option of transmigrating to Old Earth, as depicted in novels. "Since entry is free, I can't profit from selling murloc corpses... curse these regulations," he sighed, feeling the burden of poverty.
"Sir, cadets at any military academy receive stipends," Isha reminded him.
Realizing his impending enrollment, Riley affirmed, "Right, I'll be heading to the academy, to the Earth Raiders Academy," he emphasized, both for Isha's benefit and his own conviction.
Glancing at his status panel, Riley calculated his progress towards his goal. "I'll need to reach at least stage 2 to enter the Imperial Academy. Today is the 28th, and the test is on the 4th... it's not a dream," he concluded, determined to achieve his aspirations.
He couldn't believe he had already reached halfway through stage 1. Opening his status panel, Riley exclaimed, "Is this some kind of prank? I've gained so much Exp in such a short time!"
Typically, an average person awakened at 14 or 15 years old and took about 3 years to reach the peak of stage 1. Most only reached the peak at 19 years old and broke into stage 2 by age 20. Geniuses awakened at 13, peaked at 16, and broke into stage 2 by 17.
Ordinary individuals aimed for the Imperial Trooper Academy, requiring a maximum age of 18, stage 1, and outstanding performance in the entrance test. Geniuses targeted the Raiders Academy, requiring a maximum age of 18, at least stage 2, and outstanding performance.
Riley remained hopeful, thinking, "I've progressed halfway through stage 1 in a few days. This is crazy... I might really break into stage 2 and qualify for the Imperial Academy." Despite his astonishment, he credited his rapid improvement to combat and the system.Although talent was believed to be innate and determined one's progression in Immortality, Riley knew there were exceptions. Stories of individuals advancing rapidly, like those who consumed strange fruits in the Deva Ruins, inspired many.Curious about his talents, Riley asked the system, "What did you do to my talents?""Host, before you question about talents. You need to understand how the Immortality work. Let this system show you the truth"The mechanical voice of the system echoed, and Riley felt his consciousness being pulled away until everything went blank. When his awareness returned, Riley found himself in a dark space, devoid of sensation except for his presence. Unable to move his body, he realized he was here
Riley felt like he had solved a puzzle, mentally snapping his fingers in realization."So, these three Aspects—Vital, Dimensional, and Ether—are the fundamentals of everything. They make up me, the universe, and the Immortality. Each Core represents one Aspect, offering Awakeners the means to pursue the powers of these fundamental aspects. The three Avenues allow Awakeners to progress in each of these aspects," he concluded, piecing together the significance of the Immortality and their relationship to the fundamental aspects.Riley's hover bike dashed through the skyways. It passed through the floating complexes, patrolling airships, and reached a quiet district. It had no floating buildings and only a few skyscrapers. The hover bike descended and Riley stopped before the familiar building. The old-fashioned LED nameplate of the orphanage greeted him as he entered the orphanage. The front yard was a playground with with a park."Hey! Catch the bluebird!""Catch the green one!""Dodge
Riley confirmed his conjecture, but he still had questions he couldn't answer. But one thing was clear. Even though he didn't have any memory of her — Trish was real. And whatever predicament she was in, he needed to save her.The Sun was setting, marking the end of the month.Riley returned home and spent the next 5 days visiting the murloc islands. He spent all fighting the stage 1s and mastered his Awakner powers. But to his utter dismay, his progress bar never moved. It stayed stubborn at:"Body Path stage 1: 50/100"On 4th, Septa, Riley woke up earlier than usual.'Today is the day. I must make it!' He looked at himself in the mirror. 'I only got one shot to find Trish. Next year, I'll be 19 and I can't take the test.''I can do it!' Riley cheered himself. How successful it was, he didn't know.He reached the Starfish Spaceport. It was crowded with hover bikes and hover cars. Swarms of youngsters entered through the six entrances of the vast spaceport.Starfish was one of the fin
"Riley!" Jones shouted, waving and rushing over to him. Riley was stunned as Jones approached him, and then..."What are you doing here?" they both exclaimed simultaneously.Riley glared at his friend. "You're supposed to be heading to the Military Science Academy. So why are you in the Abyss? You're not a fighter!"Jones glared back just as fiercely. "And you never mentioned going to Defense Academies. Are you crazy? You need to be at least stage 2 to survive in there! You're only stage 1. They'll tear you apart."They stared at each other for a moment before sighing in unison."I don't get it. The Management is insane," Jones confessed anxiously. "We, the science academy candidates, had a test. Those who passed got tossed into the Abyss. If we 'survive,' they'll accept us. We'll spend our lives in labs. Why put us through this Abyss nonsense?"Riley patted Jones's shoulder reassuringly. "Just steer clear of the city. There are villages nearby."Feeling conflicted, Riley admitted, "I
Riley stood in the center of the Astral Grove Training Hall. The crowd had gathered around, watching him closely. His opponent, a young Body Awakener, smirked as he stretched, showing off his enhanced muscles.“You sure you want to go through with this?” the Awakener asked. “You’re unawakened. This won’t end well for you.”Riley ignored the taunt, his eyes focused on the Awakener’s stance. “We’ll see,” he replied calmly. The bell rang, signaling the start of the duel. The Awakener charged forward, his speed impressive. Riley sidestepped the first punch with ease, causing the crowd to murmur.“That’s all you got?” the Awakener taunted again, swinging another fist toward Riley’s face.Riley ducked and spun, sweeping his opponent’s legs from under him. The Awakener stumbled but didn’t fall.“You’re quick,” the Awakener admitted, his grin fading. “But speed won’t save you.”Riley didn’t respond. He stayed light on his feet, waiting for the next move. The Awakener rushed in again, throwing
Riley stood in his room, surrounded by training equipment. Sweat dripped down his face as he struggled to focus. The challenge of awakening felt heavier than ever.Suddenly, he noticed his dragon bracelet glowing. **What now?** he thought, irritated. He tapped the bracelet, and a voice filled the air."Welcome to the Immortality System."Riley froze, his heart racing. "What are you talking about?" he asked."I prevented you from awakening for 18 years," the voice continued calmly. "It was a test."His anger boiled over. "A test? You’ve got to be kidding me!" Riley shouted. "You let my mother die because you wanted to test me?""Your growth was necessary," the system replied, sounding unbothered.Riley clenched his fists, his mind racing. "You think this is some kind of game? I could have saved her! I could have saved her if you had just let me awaken!"The voice remained silent, and that only made Riley angrier. He looked down at the bracelet, its glow now mocking him. Without thinkin
Riley stood alone in the shadows of the Crypt, panic rising as he faced the Byssted. The sounds of battle echoed nearby, but Arthur’s team struggled against their opponents. The Byssted sneered, its sharp teeth glinting. “You should just give up, little Human. End your life to avoid the pain.”Riley clenched his fists, feeling the weight of despair. He understood the truth: Bysteds and Humans were sworn enemies. Surrendering would only lead to torture.“No way,” he muttered to himself. He took a deep breath and made a swift decision to flee.As he turned to run, the Byssted lunged, its claws swiping at him. Riley dodged just in time, adrenaline kicking in. He glanced back to see the creature’s eyes filled with malice.“You can’t escape! You’re too weak!” the Byssted taunted, chasing him through the dim corridors.Riley's heart raced as he pushed himself harder, fatigue from previous battles weighing him down. He spotted an opening ahead, a narrow passage that could lead to safety. “I
Riley felt lost in his own mind. The fog around him thickened, making it hard to think. Suddenly, he heard a familiar voice.“Riley,” it called gently. He opened his eyes to see Minn. Her kind face and outstretched hands filled him with warmth. “Come here,” she said, her voice soothing. For a moment, he felt comforted, as if everything would be okay. But that peace shattered when he saw a younger version of himself. The eleven-year-old Riley stood before him, wide-eyed and curious.“Is that really me?” he asked, confusion washing over him.The younger Riley looked around, taking in the dream world. “What happened to you? Why do you look so tired?”“I… I don’t know,” Riley admitted, a wave of nostalgia hitting him. “I’m trying to find my way.”“Find your way?” the younger Riley echoed, tilting his head. “You always said you wanted to be a hero.”“I wanted to,” Riley replied, sadness creeping into his voice. “But things are different now.”“Different how?” the younger Riley pressed, his
