Being happy never goes out of style
-C. E. Jerningham

"Don't mind, Ivan. That's how he is." Bailey takes me to a separate room. "You and Eric can spend the night here, the conditions aren't that good, but you can at least live here without worrying about death," she says.
"Yeah. That's more than enough." I sit on the mattress that's on the floor.
"So, tell me about you." she sits in front of me.
"Why don't you go first?" I ask.
"Alright. I am Bailey, as you know. And I am a scientist and a detective to the forces. I am a junior of Ivan. Actually, he's the only senior here, and he's currently our team leader. When the infection outbroke, we got teamed up to rescue people. Then we stayed back and built this place as Ivan didn't want to go without knowing the sole reason." she says.
"So you all stayed back because of him?" I ask.
"No." she points behind me where there's a steel door. "That's an isolation room. Three zombies are in there."
"What?!"
"Yes. My mother, Derrick's sister and Ivan's little brother. That's the main reason we haven't moved yet. But still, we haven't found a single thing about anything." she says with a sad smile.
"It's okay. We can be of help." I say.
"But seriously. If you guys don't want to stay here, you can return. Don't think Ivan forced you or something."
Oh, he sure did. But it's not like I am complaining.
That handsome man caught my eye.
Night falls, and the darkness inside the place thickens. Eric sleeps next to me, snoring like a pig while I stay wide awake. I can hear growls and groans coming from the room next to us, where the three zombies are in.
I get up from the mattress and walk toward it. Then I carefully keep my right year on the steel door to listen to the sounds well. I can hear bone-cracking sounds that sound so inhuman. My heart pounds hard in curiosity and fear.
Before I can move away from the door, someone grabs me from behind and twists my arm behind me. I was about to scream out, but that same person keeps his hand on my mouth. Then he pulls me out of the room.
I try to fight him, but it's in vain. He's too strong.
I cannot turn around because of the deadly grip. We only stop when we are in another separate part of this place. He releases me only then. I hold my hands in front of me, ready to fight and finally get the sight of the person in front of me.
Talk about the devil.
"Ivan," I mutter.
"The hell were you planning to do in there?! Get them out so everyone gets infected??" he asks.
"N-no. I was only listening to the sounds-"
"Like I would believe the shit you say." he walks over to the cooker that is placed separately from the middle section, separated by a half wall. I keep silent, follow him and sit on one of the boxes on the floor.
"You won't believe me anyway," I mutter, which goes ignored by Ivan. Why is he so grumpy?
He takes out what looks like a kind of instant noodle from a box. At the sight of the food, my stomach grumbles all of a sudden. Ivan glances at me, and I look away, totally embarrassed and cursing my stomach for being so blunt. Things cannot get any worse.
"You like it spicy or what?" he suddenly asks.
"Huh?"
"Noodles."
"Oh. Not spicy."
He takes another packet and starts making the noodles. It feels awkward without a single word exchanged between us, so I try to make a conversation.
"So.. are you also a scientist like Bailey or only a detective?" I ask.
"A detective."
"Oh. And-"
"I can't believe your military sent some random guys on a dangerous volunteer mission like this," he says.
"Wha- we are not random. They- they tested our talents!" I exclaim.
"What talents?"
"Like, shooting and physical things."
"I see."
"And- you can't judge me like that."
"I wasn't judging."
"You see, I almost made it to the special forces."
"But you didn't."
"Because I am colour-blind, yeah! They failed me on that test." I say with a frown. "What does colour have to do anything with it anyways?"
"If they ask you, is this blood, sir? You might say it's apple juice. Colour is important."
"Sarcastic much? I can identify colours though I am colour blind."
"What is your colour-blind type?" he asks.
"Achromatopsia. All I see is black and white."
"Right.."
He takes out two bowls and puts the noodles separately. I watch him with a growling stomach as I haven't had anything since morning. He serves me a smoking hot bowl, and I take it gratefully. Then I dig in as if I haven't seen food in years.
"We are making our way to the central lab in a few days. Are you going to stay back with Bailey and Derrick or come with us?" Ivan asks.
"Who else is going?"
"Everyone except Bailey and Derrick. They are going to stay back, taking care of our place. You two can join if you want."
"You'd appreciate it if we come or don't?"
"As long as you don't turn into a zombie. Yeah."
"I am in. Since there isn't much of a choice." and I get to be with you.
I finish the bowl of noodles.
"Were you that hungry?" he asks.
"Kinda. Couldn't eat since morning."
He nods and takes my bowl from my hands. Then he puts them aside and looks at me.
"Go and get some sleep now."
"Okay.."
I get some sleep, but the low growling from the room next door keeps me awake. I feel like they might crash the door and come at us, so I toss and turn the whole night. When Eric wakes me up the next dawn, I feel like a walking dead myself.
I pull out my body and walk out of the room. As soon as Bailey sees us, she hands both of us new toothbrushes. I look at her in surprise to know they have these things.
"We were able to crash the nearest supermarket and get everything," she says.
So Eric and I brush our teeth under minimum luxury, though we appreciated the help we got from others.
The only Joy in the world is to begin -Cesare Pavese ~.~ (a week later) We join the others after morning sleep, whereas they have already prepared themselves. I find Ivan holding a baseball bat and swinging it from side to side. When I look at him, I see him simply laughing at something Sasha said, and something stirs inside my heart. Maybe I am having a heart attack. "We can't guarantee you'll live if you come with us. You can still decide to stay back." Henry reminds us as a warning. But Eric and I decide to go with them as we can't stay back doing nothing. Most importantly, I want to save these buggers and return to my country soon. We get on to the same vehicle we did the last time. Ivan is the last to get on as he made sure for the nth time that Bailey and Derrick would be okay back at the hideout for a few days. We don't know for how long. The vehicle starts rolling, and Eric and Henry get into a conversation about random things. Their conversation leads them to talk abo
If you want to be happy, be -Leo Tolstoy ~.~ We make it to the nearest room and lock ourselves in it. I thought we would have some rest, but Ivan takes this paper from the wall and lays it on the table in the middle of the room. "This is the structure of the lab," he says. He goes through it with serious eyes and explains what he thinks of the structure and what steps he thinks we should take. I find him really talented and experienced in things like this. It makes me want to question if he has always wanted to become a detective or if it happened without a liking. Has he always been this inquisitive and talented? "Do you know which room we are aiming for?" I ask out of nowhere. "I am thinking about the storage room where all the files might be. But if we dig deep into situations like this, they might've kept it in a secretive place or a secured one." "You are right. We'll check the storage room first and go to the other parts." Sasha says. "The storage room is in the basemen
Very little is needed to make a happy life -Marcus Aurelius ~.~ Henry walks to the door and keeps his hand on the handle. Taking a deep breath, he parts the door just enough to take a peek. Right as he does, a zombie slams against the door with growling sounds, and he closes the door again. "We'll spend the rest of the day here, shall we?" he asks, looking bewildered. I walk to the window next to the door, which has a curtain and slightly parts it enough to look through it. "Don't." Ivan quickly pulls me back with his hand on my shoulder. "If they spot you through the window, they'll attack it. I don't think this window is strong enough to keep us safe," he says to me, looking up at me. "O-okay..." Ahh, don't look at me like that. There's complete silence in the room for a while. Sasha sits on the ground against the door, and Henry sits beside her. Eric sits on the only chair that's in the room. I look for Ivan, but he has gone back to the large bookrack where he's looking ove
To be happy, you must be your own sunshine-C. E. Jerningham~.~The ventilation tube fills with my screams of horror. Ivan holds the zombie's head with his free hand and twists it until the zombie dies. He pushes the zombie away and looks at me, who's still startled and shivering in fear.He looks at the deep bite mark on his hand and looks at me. I can see through his eyes that he's struggling to think of something. I don't know what."Ivan..." I mutter his name and take his injured arm close to examine it.His hand holds mine, and I can feel it has turned cold due to the instant blood loss. I quickly open my side bag, where I've arranged some first aid. Then I pull out some wrapping bands from it."It'll hurt, okay?" I quickly wrap his arm tightly so that he won't spill more blood."You are aware that I will soon be infected, right?" he asks. For some reason, my vision gets blurred with tears. Why did this stranger have to take the zombie attack instead of me? The zombie was about
Happiness is an inside job-Anonymous~.~We run in the corridor past the dead zombies and come to the fire exit stairway door. Ivan takes the lead as usual and opens the door. He runs upstairs, with us following from behind. We run a couple of stairways and come to the third floor."There are two laboratories that we have to search. How about we split up?" Ivan asks."Sure, it'll be a good idea. I have the two walkie-talkies with me." Sasha takes out the two walkie-talkies and gives one to Ivan."What are the teams?" Henry asks."If possible, let me be in the group that has three. I am still not used to this whole thing." Eric says.I look at him and mouth 'Scardey cat', to which he flicks my forehead."Then... the usual teams. We usually have Henry and me, and in team two, Ivan." Sasha replies."Eric takes the team with three means... I am with you." I look at Ivan, who nods. I can't believe I am teaming up with him. Then he simply opens the door to the third floor and put out his h
Happiness shared is the flower - John Harrican ~.~ Ivan clears his throat, "We should continue our search." he says. I pull away from the hug and look away awkwardly. Why did I do such a thing? "The morning sunlight will pour in through the windows any second now. If the zombies in the corridors see us, it'll be bad. So we better hurry and gather as much information as we can." We inspect the first cupboard by the entrance in the pitch darkness. "Wait. Why don't we check the computers first? They might have the research information because they were doing it while hell broke loose. Right?" I ask Ivan. "Then we have to switch on the electricity again," he says. "Yeah. But we have no choice. We need the electricity." Ivan thinks for a while and takes out the walkie-talkie. "Are you guys safe? Over," he says to the walkie-talkie. A reply comes from Sasha after a while, "Yes. What about you? Over." "Same here. Now Andrea assumes the research and lab reports might be in the co
Don't search for Happiness. Create it.-Anonymous~.~Ivan keeps his bag on the ground and takes out two ramen bowls. He opens a water bottle and splits the water into the two plastic bowls that already have the dry noodles inside. I break the flavour packets and add them to the bowls. Then we let the noodles get soak."How are the others doing?" I ask about the other team."They have locked themselves in a room like us. After eating, I will go outside and check all the computers. You stay here. Okay?""Nooo. I want to help-"Ivan frowns at me."If you want to get locked up with the zombies next door, I am fine with that. I'll do it.""Come on! You are so-""Handsome. I know.""Wha- I- I didn't say that!""You said it in your sleep. 'Handsome but rude.' Thank you so much for the compliment."OH MY GOD! WHAT!HOW!?"When did I say that?!" I ask, already embarrassed about the whole thing."In your sleep a few minutes back. You sleep talk, didn't you know?" he asks."I! I had no idea!" I
Happiness is a journey, not a destination. -Ben Sweetland ~.~ I wait for the electricity to go off. When it does, I find myself in a blindly dark room. I wait for Ivan to come back and fetch me. He comes after a while with the door flinging open. And I quickly walk out of the room with him. We start searching where we left off the day before. We search through every file for a clue regarding the file's password. An hour into the search, Ivan sits on a chair for rest and dozes off to sleep after a while. I wake him up and ask him to sleep on the floor as he might get neck pain from sleeping on the chair. I find some lab coats in a cupboard and make a small pillow for him. I let Ivan sleep there and search through files for three hours. As I get tired, I take the walkie-talkie and contact the ones in the other lab. "I am Andrea here. Over." "Hi, Andrea. It's Henry here. Over." Henry replies. "What are you guys doing? I searched for a clue about the password but still had no luck.
