Chapter 12: The Rescue

The news of Mr. Chen’s burial reaches me through Lydia. She’s still in China, handling the fallout, but her updates are frequent and detailed. I’m in my mansion, staring out at the city skyline, when my phone buzzes. It’s a message from Lydia: “Brianna’s missing.”

My stomach drops. Justin’s family wouldn’t waste any time. They’ve made their move.

I grab my coat and head out, my mind racing. If Justin has Brianna, he’ll force her to sign over her father’s assets. And if she resists… I don’t want to think about what they might do to her.

Brianna sits in the back of a black van, her hands tied, her mouth gagged. The vehicle speeds through the city, the streets blurring past the windows. The ropes are too tight for her to battle against.

The van pulls into an abandoned airfield on the outskirts of the city. Justin is waiting there, his face grim. He opens the van door and drags Brianna out, ignoring her muffled protests.

He’s holding a stack of papers, his expression calm but men

It was the next morningBrianna sits on the edge of the hotel bed,as I pass her a glass of water, her hands trembling as she clutches the water. Her eyes are red from crying, and her voice shakes as she speaks. “Justin… he forced me to sign the documents,” she says, her voice barely above a whisper. “He threatened me and put me in a cell. There was nothing I could do.” I sit across from her, my expression hidden but my mind racing. Justin’s actions are even more despicable than I imagined. “What else did he do?” I ask, my voice calm but firm. Brianna takes a deep breath, her hands tightening around the glass. “If I didn't comply, he threatened to kill me. He… he took everything. My father’s properties, his wealth… it’s all gone.” Her voice breaks, and she looks away, tears streaming down her face. I lean forward, my tone steady. “You’re safe now. And I promise you, I’ll get those documents back.” Justin’s penthouse is a mess. Shattered vases, overturned furniture, and b

I sit at the head of the table in the dimly lit room, my fingers steepled as I watch Lydia enter. She’s always composed, always in control, but tonight there’s a flicker of uncertainty in her eyes. She knows something’s off. Good. She should.“Lydia,” I say, my voice calm but firm. “I want you to stop every plan for my public introduction. Indefinitely.”She freezes for a moment, her sharp eyes narrowing as she processes my words. “Sir, with all due respect, the public introduction is crucial to establishing your authority. The people need to see you, to know who’s leading them. Without that, your position remains vulnerable.”I lean back in my chair, my gaze steady. “I don’t need the spotlight to rule. In fact, I prefer the shadows. Let them wonder who’s pulling the strings. Let them fear the unseen hand. That’s where true power lies.”Lydia hesitates, her lips pressing into a thin line. She’s not used to being overruled, but she knows better than to argue. “And what about Brianna?”

The room is tense, the air thick with unspoken words. Olivia sits across from me, her usual bravado replaced by a rare silence. Her earlier stunt trying to grab me still lingers in the air like a bad smell. I lean forward, my elbows resting on the table, and fix her with a cold stare.“Olivia,” I say, my voice low but sharp, “if you ever pull something like that again, you’ll be disciplined. And trust me, you won’t like it.”She rolls her eyes, clearly unimpressed, but there’s a flicker of unease in her expression. “Alright, alright. No more funny business. Got it.”I don’t smile. “Good. Because this isn’t a game. We’re here to work, not to play.”Lydia, sitting to my right, clears her throat, breaking the tension. “Now that we’ve settled that, let’s focus on the matter at hand. Justin’s false claim on Mr. Chen’s property. We need a plan, and we need it fast.”Eddy, standing silently by the door, steps forward. His presence is always imposing, but his voice is calm and measured. “Snea

The night air burns my lungs as I sprint through the perfectly manicured gardens of Justin’s estate, my heart pounding like a war drum. Eddy’s heavy footsteps echo behind me, steady and relentless. Shouts erupt from the guards, their flashlights slicing through the darkness, sweeping dangerously close. My grip tightens around the stolen documents proof of Justin’s corruption, his theft, his lies. But none of it matters if we don’t make it out alive. A bullet cracks through the air, striking the fountain beside us. Stone chips fly. No time to think. No time to hesitate. We just keep running."Left!" Eddy barks, shoving me toward a gap in the hedges just as a bullet whizzes past my ear. I don’t hesitate. I dive through the thick hedge, sharp thorns tearing at my arms, leaving stinging scratches in their wake. The adrenaline surges through me, but before I can turn to make sure Eddy is right behind me, a deafening crack splits the night. My heart lurches. I spin around just in time to

The police raid unfolds like a scene from one of Justin's own crime dramas. I watch from a surveillance van across the street as officers swarm his mansion, their shouts cutting through the night air. The flashing blue lights paint the manicured hedges in stark relief."Got him," Olivia murmurs in my ear through the comms. "Eddy's in the basement. They're bringing him out now."My knuckles whiten around the binoculars as I see two officers emerge, supporting a limping figure between them. Even from this distance, I can see the blood matting Eddy's hair, the way he favors his left side. Rage burns through my veins like acid."Status?" Lydia asks, her voice clipped."Alive," I grind out. "Barely."On the mansion's front steps, Justin struggles against his cuffs, his usually perfect hair disheveled. "This is absurd! Do you know who I am?" His voice carries across the lawn. The lead detective shoves him toward a squad car. "We know exactly who you are, Mr. Chen. And we have multiple witne

The morning sun slices through the heavy curtains of Brianna’s room, casting sharp golden lines across her tense face. Shadows dance over her furrowed brow, her lips pressed into a thin line. Before I can step past her, her hand shoots out, gripping my forearm with surprising force. Her fingers dig in, nails pressing just shy of breaking skin. “You can’t do this,” she whispers, voice tight with urgency. I meet her gaze, finding fear not for herself, but for me. The weight of our choices lingers between us, thick and suffocating. I swallow hard. “I don’t have a choice.”""You can’t just leave," she says, her voice trembling, raw with emotion. "Not after everything. Not without telling me who you really are." Her eyes search mine, desperate for answers. I hesitate, the truth heavy on my tongue. But saying it aloud could change everything. Maybe even destroy us.I peel her hand off me, one finger at a time. "It doesn’t matter." “It matters to me!” Her voice cracks, raw with something d

I don’t trust easily, but suspicion has a way of clinging to my skin these days. I sip my coffee, watching the steam curl upward like it’s trying to spell out the name of my enemy. My mind keeps circling back to Justin. On the surface, he’s the most obvious suspect bold, reckless, and more than willing to risk everything for power. But deep down, I know something doesn’t add up. Justin isn’t this calculated. He’s a hammer, not a scalpel.I’m returning from the café downstairs when I spot Zac waiting by the elevator, hands shoved in his pockets, a smug grin plastered across his face. He steps forward, blocking my path.“We need to talk,” he says.I raise a brow, keeping my expression unreadable. “Do we?”Zac leans in, his voice dropping. “I’ve got an offer for you. • Chapter 28: The Trap

Lydia received the letter in the early afternoon, her expression unreadable as she unfolded the heavy cardstock envelope. The company seal was embossed in gold at the top, elegant and formal, the kind of correspondence that demanded attention. Her eyes scanned the contents, her mouth tightening as she read. Then she looked up, meeting my gaze across the room.“They’ve set a date,” she said quietly. “For the official inauguration of the new chairman.”My heart dropped into my stomach. I had expected this moment to come eventually, but not so soon, not when things were still spiraling from the fallout of Justin’s exposure. The timing was too precise, too clean, as if someone had been waiting in the shadows, counting down the days to strike.I stood slowly, pushing the tablet aside. “They want me to show my face.”Lydia nodded. “They’ve sent out formal invites to the press and board members. This isn’t just a meeting. It’s a declaration.” She crossed the room and laid the letter on the c

Behind me, Olivia’s fingers dance across her keyboard, rapid and focused. The steady tapping is broken only by sharp mutters under her breath, each one a frustrated punctuation to the chaos unraveling on her screen. Emails flood in. News outlets won’t stop calling. The fallout’s begun, and we’re right at the center of the storm.“It’s done,” Olivia says, spinning her laptop toward me with a triumphant smirk. “Every major outlet just published the exposé. Justin’s name is trending in fifteen countries.” I lean in, eyes skimming the headlines flashing across the screen. Each one lands like a blow. I exhale slowly, the weight of months of deception finally beginning to lift."Xander Dynasty in Cha

Lydia's head lolls softly against my shoulder as I carry her through the door of my penthouse. Her breath is warm against my neck, tinged with the sweet, lingering scent of wine. She murmurs something incoherent, her fingers curling lightly against my chest before falling still. Her body is warm, relaxed, completely pliant in my arms. I carry her to the bedroom, the city lights casting shadows across the walls. Gently, I lower her onto the bed, brushing a strand of hair from her face. She shifts slightly, sighing. I pull the covers over her, watching her for a moment before turning away, heart heavier than I want to admit. She murmurs something unintelligible, her fingers curling into the sheets like she's reaching for something or someone in a dream. And the one person I want to talk to the one person whose strategic mind could untangle this mess is the same person I just drove away. I returned to the underground cell, the air still heavy with the scent of sweat and blood. Tate looked up, his swollen eyes filled with wariness. I crouched beside him, my voice low and sharp.
