Although mentally frozen as a result of the shocking turn of events, Avery's years of boxing training kicked in and like somebody whose limbs had been taken captive by an attachment of puppet strings, his body acted on its own.
With lightning-fast reflexes, Avery's arms swung over his head and then further behind, using the momentum to lean backward into a limbo-like position. To maintain balance so as not to fall over, his left hand grabbed onto the door frame while his right hand supported his weight on the floor, effectively keeping his upper body parallel to it.It was after his body had gotten in this position on its own, being low enough to see his sister's disfigured body diving over him and not being able to touch a single piece of fabric on his skin or hair on his head that Avery came back to his senses.Cassandra landed a few meters away in the living room and Avery who still couldn't make sense of what was going on quickly flashed back to what he saw whilst in limbo underneath his flying sibling.Although suffering from tunnel vision at the time, Avery remembered seeing how stretched Cassandra's hands were, but also, how they didn't move towards him even when he evaded which for someone whose intent was to attack him, they would have at least twitched when she missed.Thinking about this only brought one conclusion to him."Wait, she wasn't reaching out for me?" Avery asked himself before letting go of the door frame which allowed his body to drop to the floor. With his right hand still supporting his body's weight against the floor, Avery swept his left leg to the right, rotating his core while also using that right hand as a pivot to turn his entire body into a crouching position that faced the living room. The first thing his eyes looked for was Cassandra, all the while thinking:'If I wasn't her target then what was?' He asked himself as his eyes tried to find his sister and then he did.He saw her crawling with great speed toward the kitchen a few paces ahead which confused him as to what she was going to look for there. When she got close enough, Cassandra dove headfirst at the door but bumped into it with her shoulder and pushed her way into the kitchen.'It doesn't matter what she's looking for, I have to hold her down and get help before things get even worse,' Avery thought as he rushed to his feet, remembering the emergency number he saw on the news broadcasts about responding to cases of The Shadow Loss Fever.Though he never once cared for or believed news about the cases of Shadow Loss Fever until now, the number of times they disturbed what he was watching to broadcast breaking news of an outbreak just this month alone forced Avery to have the response team's hotline stuck in his memory.Thankfully that "inconvenience" happened as he needed their help right now. So, with calling the number after he successfully apprehends his sister acting as his driving force, Avery went straight for the kitchen whose double swing doors had already closed before he could get halfway there.Halfway to the kitchen was where the living room couch was and halfway past the couch was when Avery started to hear a ruckus coming from the kitchen that alarmed him even more than he was.He heard a lot of crashing and choking noise, mixed with the crackling sounds that Cassandra was already making when he saw her in her room and the concerning nature of what could be happening behind those kitchen doors increased the panic and speed with which he rushed to the kitchen."Cassandra!" Avery yelled as he got to the kitchen door and then burst through by jumping and slamming his shoulder against it.Avery landed inside the kitchen, drifting toward the oven until he stopped. He heard the same choking and crackling noise coming from his right side and so he asked while turning his body to the direction "Cassandra, what's going—!"Avery froze when to his surprise he saw a tall hooded figure with a firm grip on Cassandra's neck, lifting her entire body in the air with one hand while she struggled to get free."W-what the hell is going on here? Who the hell is this? Who the hell are you?!" Avery asked stutteringly as the ominous aura that this hooded figure was giving out sent chills down his spine.Slowly, the hooded figure panned his head from Cassandra to Avery who stood an acute angle away. He tilted his head like he was thinking if he should do something about Avery or not.The way the hooded figure moved showed that he was the least bit threatened by or worried about Avery's or Cassandra's presence there. Why would he be when he's able to overpower a rampaging Cassandra, lift her entire body, and keep her up in the air with a single hand?As the hooded figure stared down Avery, making him feel like he was an insignificant insect, the retired boxing prodigy was forced to rely on his years of boxing training which explicitly hammered the principle of observing and assessing an opponent before doing anything. One wrong move and not only he but Cassandra might be forced into a worse predicament than they already are.Avery assessed the hooded figure's build and although the thick clothing obscured what he really looked like underneath, it was clear that both their bodies weren't of the same weight classes. The hooded figure seemed to be a few pounds heavier and a few inches taller than Avery which normally wouldn't be a problem as Avery has been able to handle guys bigger than himself in the past. This time shouldn't be any different— at least that's what his mind told him— but then, his fighting instinct was telling him the complete opposite."It's not humanly possible for someone to single-handedly suspend another human of Cassandra's weight in the air while she's also flailing like a rabid dog." This is what all of Avery's instinct was conveying to him.It had only been a second since Avery and the hooded figure faced each other and all his senses were on edge, screaming how dangerous this figure in front of him was. It also didn't help that no matter how much he stared at the hooded part of the hooded figure's clothing, all he could see was darkness like there wasn't a person in there. It felt like death had come into the real world and it was standing in front of him, about to take his sister away.Avery's feet became heavy for a moment which the hooded figure saw, confirming to himself that Avery was indeed not a threat. He then returned his head to face Cassandra who was starting to flail even more aggressively.'What should I do? Should I ignore what my senses are telling me and just attack? But this isn't like those guys from the store. I don't know why but something about this guy is different, not human, but regardless I have to get Cassandra away from this person and contact that emergency hotline for help—' Avery thought, feeling so overwhelmed that he lowered his head and slowly started looking at the hooded figure only to see something that shocked him.'What the hell is this? This person, he has no shadow too?' Avery asked himself, looking at the floor where Cassandra and the hooded figure were and both of them didn't have a shadow in sight.Avery quickly looked at the hooded figure's hood, thinking "He has the Shadow Loss Fever too? But that doesn't make sense. Why does he seem normal when Cassandra is in that shape? What does this person know about the fever that everyone else doesn't—'As if thinking about the bizarre turn of events wasn't enough, Avery's curiosity was taken over by what Cassandra was doing.'Cassandra, instead of trying to get free, she's reaching out to something… something that this hooded figure seems to possess?' Avery asked himself as he saw Cassandra giving up on freeing her neck from the hooded figure's grip and instead stretching her hands toward something the hooded figure had with him.Avery had been too distracted to observe this detail but the hooded figure had a device that looked like a canister in his left hand and that was what Cassandra was desperately trying to reach for."Hey, what do you have in that canister and why is my sister so desperate for it?! Does that have anything to do with all of this?!" Avery asked, pointing at the canister. The hooded figure looked down at the canister in his hand, paused then looked at Cassandra and started squeezing her neck tighter like he trying to kill her."Hey, stop that right now!" Avery yelled and ignoring all his instincts except for the one to protect his only family, he dashed toward the hooded figure.Avery grabbed a struggling Cassandra, trying to free her but the hooded figure's grip was so strong that she couldn't be freed.Avery abandoned trying to loosen the hooded figure's grip and struck the figure's head instead. Unfortunately, not only was the hooded figure strong but he was fast as well, and with a swift backward lean, Avery's punch missed.Avery was shocked, saying "He dodged my attack?"The hooded figure stood upright and a shocked Avery tried looking into the hood to see who it was that was able to evade his punch so effortlessly. However, even at this close distance, he couldn't see anything in the darkness of the hood."What the hell are you—?" Avery asked but then paused when there was a sound from below that drew both his and the hooded figure's attention.Turns out that while he was going in for the punch and the hooded figure was distracted in his evasion, Cassandra had used her leg to hit the canister in the hooded figure's hand which by accident unlocked it.'This device, what is it? It doesn't look like anything I've seen before. Am I crazy or does it look… unworldly—?' Avery asked himself as he stared at the canister but then stopped when he felt aggression coming from the hooded figure. This was the first time he was getting any emotion from the hooded figure and that could only be bad. Avery hurriedly looked up, seeing the hooded figure vibrate with rage as he pulled Cassandra closer and was about to throw her backward.Avery's eyes widened as he gasped. He reached for his sister, grabbing her and immediately the two of them were pushed away with such great force that if it wasn't for Avery planting his feet to the ground, they would have slammed into the wall behind."What insane power" Avery commented as he panted with a struggling grimace. He and Cassandra were on the floor and he was trying to hold her down because she still wanted to get whatever it was that was in that canister."Cassandra calm down! I have to get you help so stop struggling—" Avery pleaded as he and Cassandra resisted each other, but then, the hooded figure forced Avery's attention back to him.Seems like Cassandra unlocking the canister was something that couldn't be stopped, even with how much work the hooded figure did in operating the buttons on the canister. It was too late and the canister opened.Acting quickly, the hooded figure held on to the top of the canister and tried using his strength to keep it from opening. Unfortunately, nothing he did worked and his arms were flung apart, allowing the cover of the canister to come off.Avery wondered what was happening, but suddenly, out of the canister came a black fog while everything in the kitchen shook. The next thing Avery saw was a completely black figure whose silhouette was somewhat familiar, coming out of the canister."Ah… Ah!" Cassandra voiced desperately and when Avery looked at her she was reaching out to this black figure which caused Avery's eyes to widen.Avery looked at the black figure that was gliding in the air toward him and Cassandra and he said "Cassandra, that looks like your… shadow!"Cassandra made more incoherent sounds which although had no actual grammatical meaning, it was obvious that she was longing to be reunited with her shadow, and with the way the shadow gradually glided back to both her and Avery on the ground, it was clear that it wanted the same thing, to return to its owner.Seeing this unbelievable scenario unfold right in front of his eyes, Avery still couldn't allow himself to believe that any of this was happening.Just like with the news of the Shadow Loss Fever, he has always been someone with a cynical mindset, and that very crude way of thinking was now his coping mechanism in dealing with such an outlandish situation he found himself. For a second after Cassandra's shadow started gliding towards them, Avery thought that maybe one of the gangsters from the convenience store had hit him in the head so hard that he was now suffering from a concussion.'Am I lying on the floor somewhere in the convenience store, bleeding out from a head injury?'
The hooded figure stood upright, a sense of triumph in his demeanor as he placed his right foot firmly on Avery's chest. He applied an increasing pressure, watching Avery's struggles for breath intensify as the ominous symptoms of the Shadow Loss Fever began to take hold of his body.Avery's once familiar grayish-blue irises were rapidly changing as the sclera, the white part of his eyes, started to vanish. His pupils dilated beyond normal boundaries, expanding to consume his irises entirely. Within minutes, his eyes would mirror those of his sister and the other victims of the Shadow Loss Fever – utterly black. His skin grew progressively paler with each passing second, while internally, he felt his very sense of self slipping away. Yet, amid these disorienting physical transformations, Avery remained resolute in his newfound singular focus – reuniting with his shadow confined within the canister and liberating Cassandra from her affliction."MarROW PuLSe aRRange SeVEN SeVENTh ToNe,"
The previously hooded figure ignored Avery's hate-filled words and instead tried to pull the canister away from him. From his body language, even he had gotten desperate and couldn't care less for Avery right now.All he wanted was his device back but Avery who was equally as and maybe even more desperate resisted. The previously hooded figure's grip was weaker than usual but still strong enough considering the damage he sustained from the fall. On the other hand, Avery's fingers which lackadaisically followed the instructions sent by his brain were losing in the contest of grip strength."F-fucking let free!" Avery exclaimed with bullets of saliva shooting out his mouth, his sentences getting harder to construct properly as the Shadow Loss Fever was doing more and more damage to his body.To be able to contend, Avery quickly tried using his other hand to assist but the previously hooded figure wasn't just going to allow that. With his other hand, the previously hooded figure raised it
After a quick assessment which caused a grim look to appear on the man's face, he said "My god, you're in such a terrible state. Were you caught up in the crash?""Honey, I think we need to call the ambulance—" the lady who looked really worried for Avery said but was interrupted when Avery coughed and started panting."Avery!" The man yelled as he rushed to help Avery.Avery was confused at first because his vision was starting to come back but then he saw who was next to him and he said "Mr. Prince, it is you and…your wife? What is two of you do here?"Mr. Prince and his wife looked at each other skeptically, wondering why Avery's grammar had gotten so poor all of a sudden but then they ignored it and focused back on Avery who they were more worried about than anything else."We saw what you did through the security camera footage sent to my phone. Not everyone would risk their safety to protect the shop from those hooligans so because of that we came to thank you while we were in th
Avery found himself in a perplexing and disorienting situation. Mere moments ago, he had been limping in a dimly lit alley, in the dead of night, but now, he was soaring amidst the brilliant radiance of daylight and clouds. This sudden change made absolutely no sense to him.A significant discrepancy between the darkness of night and the brightness of day suggested the passage of hours, perhaps even twelve which was lost from Avery's memory, but to him, everything had happened in the blink of an eye. How such an inexplicable transformation could occur remained a baffling enigma.Questions swirled in his mind, demanding answers that remained elusive. How had he ascended from the ground to the heavens above? More confounding was the realization that the gap between him and a particular cloud, the one he had first noticed upon his surreal shift in surroundings, was steadily widening. The piercing cold continued to envelop his entire being, the relentless winds tugging at his limbs, back,
For a moment, Avery thought that he had been caught in an updraft akin to a tornado which was powerful enough to force his body against the steady pull of gravity. However, after a quick analysis, he saw the truth and discarded that idea for two reasons. One of said reasons is that the wind pressure he felt never once increased which is needed for an updraft powerful enough to counteract the force of gravity on him. In fact, the wind pressure he felt all over his body stopped momentarily and became a cool breeze when he reached and experienced the point of maximum height. It was when he started falling upward that the wind gradually came back, however this time, in the opposite direction as his body started moving along the path of the gravitational stream. The second reason for the change of thought was in alignment with the first which is that he felt the wind pushing against him as he fell upward. This went against any possibility of an updraft being the reason why he was now "asce
Being of significantly higher mass and weight than the tumbling canister which also meant that he had a significantly greater terminal velocity than the not as streamlined device, the hooded figure was able to reach it mere seconds after zooming past Avery.Once back in his possession, the hooded figure flattened his orientation, opposing the wind which immediately slowed down his descent and took him off terminal velocity. He had accomplished the first phase of his goal and now it was time for the second phase which was surviving falling from the sky without a parachute. The hooded figure who had so far portrayed a good level of calmness, saw how close earth had gotten, giving him a time span to save himself before he became a splatter of dismembered body parts on the forest floor or a squired piece of meat on a tree. With the time of action established, the hooded figure started looking around his environment. He was trying to focus on and find a specific sign, when suddenly, he hea
The hooded figure looked at the spinning earth getting closer and he knew that the situation was as bad as it could get. If he does nothing then death is certain, and so, he looked at a mindless Avery and desperation kicked in.Thinking quickly, the hooded figure put their tumbling into his control— as much as he could anyway. He added more force, increasing how fast they tumbled while also altering their bodies' trajectory until they managed to get back to the edge of the upward gravitational stream.*Two hundred and eighty meters… Two hundred and sixty meters… Two hundred and forty meters…*Being at a point where both gravitational forces acting on their bodies went in opposite directions increased the speed at which they tumbled but also slowed down their descent by half. They rode a fine line of almost being pushed in or out of the upward gravitational stream but the hooded figure wasn't going to leave it to chance.*Two hundred meters… One hundred and eighty meters… One hundred a
Just as Alexander stepped outside the hall, he scanned the area for Blessing and saw her standing in the distance. He also saw some students talking to her but from how bashful and uncomfortable she looked, he could tell that the conversation being had was something she didn’t want to talk about. “Hey, Ble—“ Alexander called out, raising his hand to get her attention but was interrupted.“Alexander”Alexander stopped and groaned after hearing his name.He turned in the direction he had heard the voice come from, already knowing who it was because he recognized the voice. After all, it hadn’t been more than an hour since he last heard it.“Princess” Alexander said after looking at her from head to toe, wondering what she wanted. She was leaning on the wall of the exam hall, legs crossed and arms behind her back.“So you remembered my name after hearing me tell it to the invigilator” she smiled.“I have a really good memory so remembering wasn’t a challenge. Also, it’s an easy name to
(“Crystal? What crystal is he talking about? And Foci? What the hell is that supposed to be? Is it like a title or something?”) Avery asked himself and then placed his hand on his chin.(“Hmm, does the Crystal he was talking about have anything to do with the gemstone on my forehead? But wait, Shieve also talked about crushing crystal so it should be something different from the gem on my forehead, right? Speaking of gemstones, I wonder what this thing on my forehead is all about. I think I remember a time I didn’t have it so when did it get stuck on my head and why can’t I pull it off?”) Avery asked himself as from underneath his hair he pulled on the gemstone on his forehead. It didn’t budge. He stopped messing with the jewelry when he looked at Vox and his friends being carried out of the premises by Centshuu, Ripply, Kove, Mosey, and then Shieve who was only confident because Avery had physically and mentally crippled them.Vox was trying to say something but Centshuu who was the
All he and everyone else wanted to see was the other side of Vox’s head. The part that used to be on the floor and covered in the blood. Now that his friends had helped him sit up, everyone who was at the right angle could see what the condition of that part of Vox’s head was. With the amount of blood that had leaked from his body, if the wound was on that side of his head then it could only be seen as a miracle that he wasn’t dead yet.Emphasis on yet.“So all that blood is from his mouth and not a broken skull. That’s good.” Centshuu commented. After confirming, Centshuu smirked and looked at Avery.“See that, Ave. The bastard is fine— well, as fine as he can be after that punch. It could have been worse but the thing to note is that it isn’t so you’re good. Nobody died and you’re not a murderer so chill” Centshuu said. After seeing that Vox was alive and also hearing Centshuu’s words of reassurance, Avery finally calmed down.“You see. Don’t go getting carried away again and most i
“What are you waiting for? Aren’t you guys going to do something to help him? Do I have to ask for the people he calls his friends to help him again like last time?” Kenser said in a panic.Centshuu looked at her and then furrowed his eyebrows. “It’s you, bargirl. If I remember correctly, all of this started because the pug wanted to stand up for you” Centshuu said then turned to Avery who was sinking deeper into insanity.“Don’t you dare put this on me! This happened because Avery tried to protect you and everyone knows it. If you guys hadn’t carelessly stepped closer to these guys and antagonized them the way you did then Avery wouldn’t have had to step in and protect you. Doing something that might—“ Kenser said, looked at Vox and looked at Avery then swallowed her words. She didn’t want to say that Vox was dead because she didn’t know if hearing that would worsen Avery’s condition.“It’s my fault, huh?” Centshuu said and Kenser jolted She quickly covered her mouth. She realize
*BAM*The sound of Vox’s arrogant ass uniting with the hard waxed floor of the Velvet Serpent’s main hall reverberated in everyone’s ears. A sound only heard because the onstage live performance had halted the moment Bell made her appearance and kicked Vox and his friend out of her establishment. After all the training they’ve received, none of the girls could do something as disrespectful as continuing their performance, risking the possibility of stealing attention from the madam as she enforced her sovereignty and reprimanded the leader of some disrespectful guests. The same leader who got taught a lesson he would never forget by the young man from another world, adorned in tattered clothes and a borrowed jacket. The force Avery had punched Vox with not only sent him on a crash course between the cold hard floor and his rear end but, after the first impact, the momentum gained from the punch remained, causing the victim to skid a few feet backward until his back also met the floor
During the moment that Ripply warned Vox, Mikie, Fez, Kief, and Graham, to leave the Velvet Serpent peacefully or face expulsion and Vox reacted negatively by clenching his fists and vibrating with rage, causing his friends to fear for what he was going to do, Avery had gotten himself distracted. His mind was enthralled, pondering the truth of the decision made between Centshuu and Ripply and why it was so important that Centshuu felt it necessary to bring it up at that moment. For a moment, Avery took his eyes away from his recent adversaries and lowered his head to contemplate the intriguing topic. In those fleeting seconds of looking at the floor, Vox turned around, pretended to heed Ripply’s warning, and walked away. (‘Hmm. I wonder if when I become a part of the squad like Centshuu eluded to, would I be able to get the answer about the decision Ripply made between the both of—‘) Avery's thought halted when he noticed something from the corner of his eyes.Vox discreetly reached
These were all things they wondered about that caused their hearts to pound, and their fear wouldn’t subside until Vox finally acted./“Alright. I guess we’ll leave like the bitch wants”\ Vox replied, shocking but also relieving his friends who became happy, thinking that he cared more about them than his ego and pride.Centshuu, maintaining his poker face asked “What did he say, Ripply?”“The fuck leader of the fuck crew said they’d take their leave” Ripply answered.Centshuu grunted with concern. “I’m guessing he said more than that or else you wouldn’t still be this angry.”“Yeah. The bastard keeps testing my patience” Ripply replied.“Did he insult Bell or me?” Centshuu asked, knowing well that that was the only thing that would get Ripply angry enough to act and speak how he is now.“He did alright. He called her a bitch… to my face” Immediately and for a moment, Centshuu who had been keeping his cool, poker face and all, had a chip in his amour. His anger slipped right through
/“….you have until the count of five to get whatever trash-water nonsense you came here with. Once that’s done, you have half that time to discharge from the premises or else get thrown out. We won’t warn you a second time”\ Ripply declared.By the side, Makieth who was surprised to hear such brashness come from a calm-looking individual like Ripply couldn’t help when her mouth gapped unknowingly. On the other hand, Bell who had known Ripply for the longest smiled./It’s unbecoming for a lady as beautiful as yourself to look so lost. Correct yourself”\ Bell said as she helped Makieth close her mouth then went back to crossing both arms. “Still as foul-mouthed as always huh, Ripply. For a second there, I was starting to think that your time abroad had domesticated you too much but I guess I was wrong” Bell monologued, staring at Ripply with nostalgic eyes. Mosey discreetly glanced at Kove, the only one among them who might have understood exactly what Ripply said. “Do you think he d
Vox grimaced as he tried to remember what he had said about her and then like a bolt of lightning, it came to him./“You not only called me names in front of my workers and other guests but you also voiced your insulting assumptions of what I was doing in privacy with those two gentlemen. Your associate also insulted one of my girls which is the same thing as insulting me so Mr. VOX, tell me if there’s anything I’m missing”\ Vox cleared his throat /“Madam Bell, I accept to saying all that but I did so in the heat of the moment—“\ he said but was cut off again./“Mr. Vox, I’ll do you and your associates all the favor of clearing the amount you would have paid for the damage done to my establishment. Think of it as a final showcase of appreciation for your patronage so far but I won’t repeat myself. You and your associates should escort yourselves from the premises or else be forced out”\ Bell said, the anger in her voice becoming more apparent. Vox looked around where they were then
