Chapter 3

Jake scoffed and shrugged his head slowly.

Jake expressed, "I still can't believe what you accused me of earlier. I'd never bother to do such a thing as what you're telling me."

Anna retorted, "Oh shush. Stop pretending. We're the only ones in this house, and if you're trying to tell me that there's some sort of ghost who scared me, then stop it."

Jake countered, "Who knows? Maybe it's Dad since you kept mentioning him. Maybe he heard you?"

Anna snapped back, "If you won't say anything good that'll help me calm down, then I'd appreciate it more if you would just keep quiet, alright?"

Jake relented, "Fine. Give me the typewriter. I'm going to get it repaired."

Anna questioned, "What typewriter?"

Jake clarified, "Yours. We can't afford to repair both. We don't have that much money."

Anna acknowledged, "Right."

Jake suggested, "You could use Dad's for a short time."

Anna hesitated, "But it's old."

Jake reassured her, "Yeah... but I'm sure it would still work since it has just rested in the attic."

Anna felt bland as she thought about everything that happened in the attic earlier.

Anna said, "Jake."

Jake replied, "What?"

Anna questioned, "Are you being for real?"

Jake asked, "What do you mean?"

Anna clarified, "You were not in the attic earlier?"

Jake insisted, "Yes! I swear, cross my heart! What even happened exactly? Did you see someone? Did you even see me there?"

Anna responded, "No..."

Jake suggested, "Maybe it was rats?"

Anna dismissed the idea, "There's no way. I don't even think we have rats here in the house. And if there is, we would have taken care of it immediately."

Jake requested, "Can you tell me exactly what happened?"

Anna let out a heavy air as he massaged her hands. Suddenly, bullets of sweat formed on her forehead even though she was feeling cold.

" Well, to start it with. I brought up a flashlight with me in the attic since there is no electricity there. " I remembered I was actually the one who took care of and packed Dad's things when he passed away, that's why it didn't take me long to find where the typewriter is.”

" Then?”

Anna said, " Then after that, I became busy checking it and dusting it off... when suddenly I heard footsteps just meters away from me. I immediately thought about you and believed that you were playing pranks.”

Jake said, " Shit... that's creepy. “

Anna said, " And then I became curious who was that of course. I took the flashlight with me and tried to see for myself, but then I found no one. “

Anna bit her tongue as the same eerie feeling she felt earlier gushed under her skin once again.

" The scariest part of it all happened not so long after. The flashlight suddenly didn't work even though I was so sure that the batteries are new. I am so sure that someone whispered my name too. I was going hysterical that I couldn't manage to think properly at that moment. “

Anna said, " All I could do is scream and take the typewriter as I hurried to leave that attic.

Jake said, " Oh... that explains why you didn't have any flashlight with you when you came down.

" Yes. It is left in the attic. “

Jake said, " We will need that flashlight again, Anna. Do you think you can come and get it—

Anna said, " Hell no. I don't think I could ever step foot again in that scary attic. I think we might need to get it blessed as soon as possible.

Jake said, " I honestly don't know what to say. If I were you, I would react the same.

Jake sighed. Anna handed Jake her typewriter which he accepted. Suddenly, she frowned.

Anna said, " Wait a minute... it's already late at night. How are you going to get that repaired?

Jake said, " I told you already, it's still early. The shop closes at 12 and I still have time.

Anna said, " Oh.. are you sure? The town was a bit far away from here... don't you think it would be dangerous?

Jake said, " I'll be fine. Besides, I have a party to attend tonight anyways.

Anna said, " Okay. Then wait a minute, I'm just going to finish this script I'm writing so that you can take it and send it to the post office.

Jake agreed and watched his sister type all the other words she needed for the script.

Jake remarked, "Couldn't you be faster with that?"

Anna replied, "Just wait, I'm already near to finishing it."

Jake commented, "Well, as you should. You should worry if the post office is still open at this hour."

Anna agreed, "Probably."

Anna added, "Damn, I need to talk to my editor about this later. I think I owe her an explanation."

Jake inquired, "Are there still things you need to do after that?"

Anna responded, "None."

Jake assumed, "Then I assume you're just going to take a rest?"

Anna just nodded as she heaved a sigh. Not so long after, she finally finishes the script, and just like lightning, she fastly handed it to Jake so that he could finally leave.

Jake said, " Is this all?”

Anna said, " Yes, take care. What time are you going home?”

Jake said, " I don't know, but I think I won't come home until past midnight.’

Anna said, " Alright then, have fun and be safe. ‘

Jake said, " Yes, thank you. By the way, the typewriter might take a while, so it would be really necessary for you to use Dad's. “

Anna said, " I'm surprised it still even works. Fortunately, I thought I wasn't going to be able to use it. ‘

Jake said, " It was just dusty, you still need to clean it though.’

Anna said, " I know... ‘

Jake said, " Alright, I'm going to go now. Don't forget to lock up the house later. ‘

Anna waved her brother goodbye as he left. When she was already home alone. That's when reality starts kicking in again.

" I feel so tired. There's no way I could still be productive and still do things.  I want to sleep so bad. Jake won't be here for hours and it would be boring to be all by myself and remembering— No, damn it. I'm just scaring myself more. I need to clear my mind. “

After some time, Anna reached her room and immediately locked the door before tucking herself into bed. And without even trying, she fell asleep immediately as soon as she closed her eyes.
