Jill shook her head quickly, shaking off the image of Tom being too brave to come to his death. Jill's right hand waved at some guards, then pointed at Tom with a glare. "You guys! What did you do to let this beggar come and ruin the plans of Arthur, the heir to JF Group?!"
Tom looked away briefly as the guards looked at him questioningly. He simply raised his hand, then returned to the stage in the centre of the garden.
"No need to be shy, Mrs Reynolds," Tom greeted. His hands were already in each of his trouser pockets.
"Who dare you to talk to her? Why are you guys stopping? Catch him and drag him out! Did you not hear me? Should I call dad first to get you to follow my orders?" scolded Arthur.
However, Tom was already standing by his half-brother's side as he tapped Arthur lightly on the shoulder. "Calm down, dude. Calm down. Because they should be following my orders more than yours, Arthur."
"Don't talk rubbish! Guards, come here! Take this guy out right now before I sack all the guards right now!"
Behind the furious Arthur, Jill had been gazing at Tom. She pulled Shannon's hand away, and even had to go downstage to get away from Tom's presence, which was getting more and more attention.
This time, it wasn't the guards who came to crowd around Tom who was still staring disappointedly at Arthur. It was Pete Cameron.
"Why aren't the guards listening to my orders, Pete?"
Tom approached Arthur and gently nudged his shoulder. "Be a little more polite. Isn't he even older than our dad?"
"Watch your language! Whose dad are you blithely talking about here?" Arthur scolded fiercely.
Hearing Tom's last sentence, Jill, who had been ignoring Shannon and Camellia's questions, stopped in her tracks. Several guards had surrounded the trio just before they exited the garden area.
"No, Mrs Reynolds. No one can leave here now."
Tom's words were immediately met with a curse by Jill. "No one has more right to give orders on Mr James' land than Arthur! No one!"
Camellia, who was confused, immediately pulled Jill's arm gently. "Do you know him, mum?"
Jill shook her head firmly. Her eyes seemed to hold anger towards the first born. "Mum wouldn't want to know a fucking man like him!"
Hearing that, Shannon could only stare at Tom from a distance. She remembered that she had met Tom in the past few days. However, she forgot where exactly.
"I think I've met him before, Mum."
"Save your memories, Shannon!"
Pete quickly asked the guards to come out, bringing James Fischer, whose condition had improved with the arrival of his only child.
"Dad?"
Quickly, Arthur rushed down the stairs, welcoming the wheelchair user, James. Unfortunately, James gave no friendly response to the son who had tricked him.
Seeing this oddity, the guests in attendance began to speculate on many things. Each of them had come up with new presumptions as they waited for the announcement that would shock the world.
"It looks like there will be a drama over wealth."
Jill's suspicion was clear. She immediately whispered to Shannon and Camellia. "No matter what happens, remember this! Mum would do anything for you!"
Seeing her mum fidgeting, Camellia began to realise a few things. She must have committed a crime that could bring down the Reynolds industry in an instant.
From the stage, Tom was still standing proudly behind his dad's back. As for Arthur, he glared at Pete Cameron for not allowing him to go on stage.
"Tell me what's going on, Pete? Who is he? What does he want by messing up my engagement party with Shannon? Why did you hide daddy's wonderful development? Why didn't you tell me the truth that daddy was back to normal? Didn't you hear me? Did you ignore me? Answer me, Pete! I warned you, Pete!"
James stood up from his wheelchair. He hugged Tom tightly with tears in his eyes. "Welcome back, Aland. Welcome back."
With just two simple, soul-stirring sentences, everyone present immediately understood his or her position. Arthur, who was shocked beyond belief, immediately retreated with unsteady steps.
Jill swallowed hard with sweat pouring down her face. She knew it wouldn't be long. This could be the last time she saw the party before Tom reported to her for premeditated murder.
The rest of the crowd applauded when they realised the name James had mentioned was the name of the boy they had lost twenty years ago.
Tom hugged his dad tightly. He quickly released his dad's embrace, then looked at Arthur with a friendly laugh.
"Hello brother, Arthur? Are you enjoying everything now that I'm no longer at home? Then why did you stay away when I came back to my home again?"
Arthur trembled. He gaped in disbelief. "Don't make this up! How could Aland, who died twenty years ago, suddenly come here again after two decades?"
Tom laughed. He took Arthur's right hand and shook it firmly. He also pulled his half-brother's body into a hug as if they had missed each other.
"Don't make the JF Group's stock go down for now, Arthur. Isn't this what you want? Then act as if we are good brothers. At least, in public."
Arthur was still catching his breath repeatedly. He really couldn't believe what he was experiencing. He glanced at Shannon from a distance. So did Mrs Reynolds, who looked angry.
Tom hugged Arthur with a bright smile. Several camera flashes began to fill the garden area of the James residence, complete with rumours.
Seeing his two children, who looked familiar with each other, James looked happy. His smile was perfect. Then he grabbed the microphone to make an announcement.
"Sorry for the inconvenience, ladies and gentleman. But like it or not, you're here to celebrate my son's return after all this time."
Jill spat as Tom turned to her near the exit. She grunted in annoyance that her plan had failed.
"I'm not having this engagement!"
Jill's statement left everyone wondering. Not to mention the happy James. "But why, Mrs Reynolds?"
Jill chuckled. She glanced at Tom, who was still staring at her from a distance.
"Because," Jill paused her sentence. She noticed that all eyes were on her. Some of her journalist friends were also ready to record all her statements. Reluctantly, she flashed a bright smile as she continued, "today is a happy day. I don't want to disturb the happiness of Mr Fischer and his perfect family. As for the engagement, let's rearrange the schedule."
Tom laughed. He applauded Jill's unexpected statement. "Mrs Reynolds, you are really wise. I never thought I'd be impressed, even though we're meeting for the first time."
At the end of the sentence, Tom deliberately raised the tone of his voice. He passed by Arthur, who was still staring at him, and headed towards Jill, Shannon, and Camelia with a bright smile.
Tom's right hand extended towards Jill as he nodded slowly. He waited for Jill's hand to meet his.
Jill glanced at Tom before her laughter returned. "It's an honour to meet the heir to the JF Group, who was rumoured to be dead twenty years ago."
Tom laughed. He led Jill to the centre area, on the main stage. He whispered something that made Jill's heart stop beating.
"Should I correct what you just said? Shouldn't it be something like this: I'm honoured to meet the heir to the JF Group that should have gone up in flames?"
Everyone was shocked by Tom’s horrifying question. Jill was no exception as she suddenly stiffened. She watched as the neighbours began to talk about Tom’s question, which was deliberately raised in tone.Jill laughed. She smacked Tom’s chest with glee. She also gave him a big smile. “You like to joke around. I didn’t expect that.”Tom laughed too. He nodded at everyone and led Jill back to the stage.“Are you getting crazy?” Jill whispered in annoyance. But because she was in front of so many people, she didn’t show her upset face. Instead, her face was full of excitement.Tom glanced at Jill happily. He was sure that the victory would go to him. “Let’s get one thing straight, Mrs Reynolds.”In the presence of his dad, James Fischer, Tom led Arthur onto the main stage. He aligned himself with his stepbrother, who was still holding back his anger.Jill was still smiling brightly. She took a step back, looking at Shannon and Camelia, who were also approaching the main stage.“What need
Arthur was seen pacing back and forth. There were Camellia and Jill, who were also thinking. All three of them were at their wit's end. Especially after Tom proved that he could get a new project for a fantastic price quite easily."Have you contacted Ronald?" asked Jill hurriedly. She started to rise with her arms crossed. "We can't stay silent. You have to show again how valuable you are to JF's progress in order to get the legacy we planned."Arthur stopped walking. He reached for the phone, dialled Ronald, and started talking. "Shall we meet, Mr White?"Jill quickly got up. She pressed the speaker feature on the phone to listen in. She waved for Camellia to come over as well."Of course, Mr Fischer. But I have to meet someone special first. He made an appointment even three days ago."Jill showed him the brown envelope, gesturing to discuss an important matter that needed to be resolved.Arthur nodded in understanding. He cleared his throat briefly. "Of course, Mr White. Go see hi
Arthur clenched his fists tightly. He shook off Tom's hand as he pulled him closer to his dad. His expression turned sour. His patience was at its limit. He glanced at Tom, who was pulling out a chair to let him sit in the one provided.Tom laughed triumphantly. He tapped Arthur lightly on the shoulder before sitting down opposite his dad."I'm curious, Arthur." James paused his sentence as he cut a small slice of a delicious roast of renowned quality. After chewing slowly, he glanced at Arthur with a smile. "What deception have you been getting from Aland since his arrival with so much joyful news?"Hearing that, Arthur widened his eyes in disbelief. He shook his head softly because of prolonged anxiety. There was a lot of rage in his head about the inheritance that might not be divided equally.Arthur got up after a long sigh. He could not remain silent. He nodded his head as he glanced at Tom, who was quietly eating his lunch."News of happiness? What happy news are you talking abo
A knock on the door made Tom look up. He who had been hit by the books about some other promising projects could not help but close his agenda."Come in, Arthur."Hearing Tom's answer from inside, Arthur, who had been knocking, was surprised. He frowned in surprise as he looked around. After confirming that there were no surveillance cameras there, he entered hesitantly."I don't think there was ever a surveillance camera here. How would you know if I knocked?"Tom laughed as he got up from his seat. He invited his brother to sit down and headed to the small fridge in the corner of his room. "What do you want, Arthur?""As before, I still want the same thing. I want to get my hands on JF Groups completely. Because I'm the one who knows best about all the problems in the company."Hearing Arthur's answer, Tom looked back. He laughed with a chuckle. "That's not what I asked."Arthur pursed his lips tightly, then looked away. "Gimme an iced coffee."Tom grinned at Arthur's agitated behav
"I'm sorry, dad. Really, I didn't mean to hurt you. I just wanted to make Arthur realise that what he was doing wasn't his best effort."James nodded slowly. His eyes stared out of the window as the night grew darker. His head nodded and bowed simultaneously. "I know, Tom. It's just that if I think back to how much effort it took to learn to lead JF before, I won't believe it. All the projects were crushed, all the performance was still stable, even the stock price was soaring the last time I could still go to the office."Tom frowned. He approached, then knelt before his dad. "Did you have an accident?"James shook his head with a smile. "My condition suddenly deteriorated. That's all. Maybe I'm tired. Or maybe I had a lot on my mind. All out of the blue, I fell and I couldn't do anything anymore. That's all.""Can I see your examination results, dad? Although I don't understand enough, but considering your healthy lifestyle with balanced exercise, I think it's suspicious.""There ar
“Damn it! He’s a complete psychopath! And I’m going to go absolutely nuts if I have to deal with him here at home!”Jill smirked at Arthur, who was swearing incessantly while hitting the wall of the study. She leaned back and stared at the reflection in the mirror just to the side of the sofa.“He’s good at twisting things around, Arthur. Don’t deal with her with your poor thinking skills. Of course you’ll go crazy over it.”Arthur turned his head angrily. He approached Jill, then knelt down in front of her. “Then what should I do, Mrs Reynolds? At this rate, I’m not sure I’ll be able to take full control of JF Groups.”Jill flashed a big smile. She pointed right at the mirror as she cleared her throat. “You saw that? Try as he might, he can’t change reality, Arthur. He’s not highly educated. She lives in
It was late afternoon by the time Tom collected all the results of his inspections. He brought all the necessary files with him as he thanked Arthur at the scheduled meeting with the general managers of each field."After going through each of your work, there are a few things I must emphasise. Although this has not yet received approval from the chairman in question. From now on, let's improve our performance. Especially regarding the important projects that will be carried out. Regarding the selected team, I will most likely reshuffle it myself for the sake of the common good. Eventually, I will report the results to the chairman and make a written report for you to understand. Thank you."Tom was about to leave his seat when one of the general managers raised his hand."Please speak.""What is this inspection for, sir? You don't even inspect every project in progress. Nor are you collecting our eq
Jill had arrived at the front of the jewellery shop where Tom, Arthur and Shannon were choosing jewellery. She glanced at one of the staff and waved. She took as much money as she could and put it in the jewellery clerk's bag."You know what you have to do, don't you? Make sure there won't be any evidence that can get him off. Or you'll pay the price. You get it?"The clerk quickly moved away from Jill and was about to take over her friend's job of showing Shannon some fancy jewellery. But Tom immediately refused vehemently."Sorry, miss. I only want to be served by the previous girl."Diana, she flashes a big smile to persuade Tom, who pauses Shannon from picking out jewellery. "The previous attendant has not been adept enough to show the excess jewellery that the bride-to-be will be wearing, sir. So it would be best if I accompany Ms Reynolds here."Arthur tapped Tom lightly on
