Chapter 14

The tension from the previous night still lingered like a fog as Ramon sat at his desk, going over the footage he’d captured of Xavier’s speech. Each frame was incriminating, a clear display of the toxic control Xavier had cultivated over his followers. Ramon knew he held the key to dismantling Xavier’s grip, but he also understood the dangers that lay ahead.

Across the room, Violet and Lila watched him work, their faces tense but resolute. After the showdown with Xavier, they had all agreed to lay low and regroup. They hadn’t spoken much on the way back, each of them lost in thought, absorbing the night’s events.

Violet broke the silence first, her voice low. “Do you think they’ll retaliate?”

Ramon looked up from the screen, his expression unreadable. “If Xavier thinks he still has a chance to keep control, he will. He’s too arrogant to let this go.”

Lila bit her lip, glancing nervously at the door as if expecting someone to burst through at any moment. “He’s going to come after us. We’ve challenged him in front of everyone.”

Ramon reached across the table and took her hand, giving it a reassuring squeeze. “Which is why we need to be smart about this. We have the evidence. Now it’s about choosing the right moment to expose him. We can’t let fear control us the way he controlled them.”

His words seemed to calm her, if only a little. Lila nodded, her gaze steadying as she met Ramon’s eyes. “I’m with you. Whatever it takes.”

Violet stepped forward, a determined look in her eyes. “We should go to the university authorities first thing tomorrow. We can’t give Xavier a chance to twist this around.”

Ramon nodded. He knew she was right, but something in the back of his mind whispered caution. Xavier was too cunning, too well-connected. Simply handing over the evidence might not be enough.

That night, sleep was elusive for all of them. Ramon lay in bed, staring at the ceiling, replaying the encounter with Xavier over and over. He could still hear the echo of Xavier’s threats, feel the weight of Marcus’s hand on his shoulder. He had challenged a man who thrived on control and manipulation—Xavier wouldn’t let that go unpunished.

The next morning, Ramon, Violet, and Lila met outside the university administration building. They had agreed to go together, a united front. As they walked in, Ramon felt the eyes of students and staff on them, whispers rippling through the hallways. News of the confrontation had spread like wildfire, and everyone seemed to be waiting to see what would happen next.

Inside the dean’s office, they were met by Dr. Thornton, a stern-looking woman with sharp eyes and a no-nonsense demeanor. She gestured for them to sit down, her gaze sweeping over each of them in turn.

“Ramon, Violet, Lila,” she began, her voice steady. “I understand you have something important to discuss regarding… Xavier’s activities.”

Ramon glanced at his friends before pulling the camera from his bag. He placed it on the desk and met Dr. Thornton’s gaze with steady resolve. “This footage shows Xavier leading a gathering where he incites his followers, spreading fear and manipulating them into obedience. He’s created a dangerous environment on campus, and it’s time the university did something about it.”

Dr. Thornton nodded, taking the camera. She watched a few minutes of the footage, her expression unreadable, before setting it down.

“This is serious,” she said, her tone clipped. “But I must warn you—Xavier’s family has influence in this institution. This could be… complicated.”

Ramon’s jaw tightened. He had expected resistance, but hearing it so plainly was still frustrating. “So you’re saying his family’s connections are more important than the safety of the students?”

Dr. Thornton’s eyes narrowed. “No, Ramon. I’m saying that Xavier’s network is extensive. We have to handle this carefully. If we move too quickly, he could retaliate in ways that would make it difficult to address the real issue.”

Violet leaned forward, her voice sharp. “So, what do you suggest?”

Dr. Thornton took a deep breath, folding her hands on the desk. “Give me time to review the evidence. I’ll need to present this to the board. But understand—this will not be quick or easy.”

Ramon clenched his fists, frustration simmering beneath his calm exterior. But he nodded, knowing that pushing too hard could backfire.

“Fine. But don’t wait too long. He’s already dangerous enough.”

The following days were a tense waiting game. Ramon, Violet, and Lila kept a low profile, avoiding places where they might run into Xavier or his followers. But despite their caution, they couldn’t escape the feeling of being watched. Xavier’s influence lingered in the air, an unspoken threat that hung over them like a storm cloud.

One afternoon, Ramon received a text from an unknown number: Meet me in the old library. I have information on Xavier.

He stared at the message, his instincts screaming caution. It could be a trap, yet the chance to gather more intel was too valuable to ignore. He showed the text to Violet and Lila, and they all agreed he should go, with them close by in case things went wrong.

The old library was dark and deserted when Ramon arrived. Shadows stretched across the dusty bookshelves, and the faint scent of mildew hung in the air. He scanned the room, his pulse quickening when he saw a figure step out from behind a shelf—a girl, maybe a year or two younger than him, with haunted eyes and a nervous demeanor.

“Are you Ramon?” she whispered, glancing around as if afraid someone might overhear.

He nodded, studying her carefully. “And you are?”

“Melina,” she replied, her voice barely audible. “I was… one of Xavier’s followers. Until I couldn’t take it anymore.”

Ramon’s heart raced. Here was the proof they needed—a former member who could expose Xavier from the inside. “Why did you leave?”

Melina’s gaze dropped to the floor, her shoulders slumping. “Xavier… he’s not just controlling. He’s dangerous. Anyone who questions him ends up… punished. I’ve seen people get hurt, people who were once his closest allies. He finds ways to make them disappear from his life—and from campus.”

Ramon took a step closer, his voice gentle. “Why are you telling me this?”

Melina looked up, her eyes glistening with unshed tears. “Because someone needs to stop him. He… he has too much power. I thought I was safe when I left, but he keeps sending people to remind me that he’s watching. I’m not the only one, Ramon. There are others like me—afraid to speak up, but desperate for a way out.”

Ramon reached out, placing a reassuring hand on her shoulder. “We’re going to stop him, Melina. We already have footage of one of his gatherings. With your testimony, we can show everyone what he’s really like.”

She hesitated, her gaze darting to the shadows around them. “I don’t know. If he finds out, I don’t know what he’ll do to me.”

Ramon nodded, understanding her fear. “We’ll protect you. We’ll go to the authorities together.”

For a moment, she was silent, weighing his words. Then she nodded, a spark of determination flickering in her eyes. “Okay. I’ll help.”

The next morning, Ramon, Violet, Lila, and Melina returned to the administration building, this time armed with both the footage and Melina’s firsthand account. They met with Dr. Thornton again, who listened intently as Melina recounted her experiences, her voice trembling but steady.

When she finished, Dr. Thornton leaned back in her chair, her expression grave. “This is more serious than I anticipated. If Xavier has a network of people enforcing his control… this could involve more than just disciplinary action. We may need law enforcement.”

Ramon felt a surge of relief. Finally, they were getting somewhere. “So you’ll move forward with this?”

Dr. Thornton nodded, but her gaze was troubled. “Yes. But I need you all to understand—Xavier won’t go down quietly. There may be consequences. His family has influence, and they won’t take this lightly.”

Violet squared her shoulders, her gaze fierce. “We’re not backing down. This isn’t just about us. It’s about everyone he’s hurt.”

Dr. Thornton gave them a tight smile, admiration flickering in her eyes. “Then let’s bring this to the board. I’ll call an emergency meeting.”

That evening, as the board members convened, Ramon and his friends waited outside, the tension mounting with each passing minute. Melina fidgeted nervously, glancing at the door every few seconds. Ramon placed a reassuring hand on her shoulder, offering a small, encouraging smile.

Finally, the door opened, and Dr. Thornton emerged, her expression unreadable.

“Well?” Ramon asked, his voice barely above a whisper.

Dr. Thornton nodded, a hint of a smile breaking through her usually stern demeanor. “They’ve agreed to take action.

We’ll begin the formal investigation, and Xavier will be suspended pending the results. With the footage and Melina’s testimony, we have a lead.
