Chapter 21

The following week felt like an eternity. Ramon, Violet, Mark and Lila kept their heads down, attending classes and focusing on their schoolwork, but they could feel the shift in the atmosphere around campus. News of Xavier’s suspension spread quickly, and reactions varied—some students supported the decision, while others whispered that Ramon and his friends had crossed a line.

Each day, the tension grew as Xavier’s supporters grew bolder. Ramon noticed them glancing at him from across the campus courtyard, and Lila was sure she’d caught someone following her home twice that week. Though Dr. Thornton assured them that security had been tightened, they were constantly on edge.

One evening, Ramon sat alone in the library, trying to study but struggling to focus. He couldn’t shake the feeling that someone was watching him. Every small noise, every creak of a floorboard, sent his nerves tingling. A chill prickled the back of his neck, and he looked up to see a shadowed figure slipping into the library’s back exit.

The figure’s retreat seemed purposeful, almost like an invitation.

Ramon closed his book, his mind racing. His instinct told him to ignore it, but something deep down urged him forward. He rose, walking quietly toward the exit, his heart pounding. As he stepped outside, the cool night air hit him, and he squinted into the darkness, barely able to make out the shape of someone standing by the trees.

“Ramon,” the figure whispered. He recognized Melina’s voice immediately and exhaled, relieved.

“Melina, you scared me,” he said, approaching her. “What are you doing here?”

She looked over her shoulder, as though expecting someone else to appear. “I had to tell you something. I didn’t feel safe saying it anywhere else.”

Ramon’s pulse quickened. “Is it about Xavier?”

Melina nodded, a shiver running through her. “Yes. It’s worse than I thought, Ramon. Since his suspension, his followers have been… rallying. He’s convinced them that he’s the victim here, that you’re all trying to ruin him. They’re organizing something, and I don’t know what, but he’s not backing down.”

Ramon clenched his fists. He had expected Xavier to fight back, but he hadn’t realized the extent of his influence. “What exactly did you hear?”

Melina shifted uncomfortably. “They’re saying he’ll ‘take back what’s his’ by any means necessary. I think they’re planning something for the hearing next week.”

Ramon’s mind raced. The university board had scheduled a hearing for Xavier, where the evidence would be presented, and Melina would testify. If Xavier’s followers intended to disrupt it, things could quickly get out of control.

“Thanks for warning me,” Ramon said, his tone serious. “We’ll be ready.”

Melina gave him a hesitant nod, her eyes full of worry. “Be careful, Ramon. He’s more dangerous than you think.”

The next morning, Ramon, Violet, and Lila met in a quiet corner of the student union, away from prying eyes. He relayed Melina’s warning, and Violet’s face paled as she absorbed his words.

“This is getting out of hand,” she whispered. “What if they do something at the hearing?”

Lila’s expression was grim. “We’ve come this far. We can’t back down now. But we should be prepared for anything.”

Ramon nodded, his jaw set. “Agreed. We’ll stay together, and we won’t let them intimidate us. This is our chance to finally expose him.”

They spent the rest of the week preparing, knowing that their confrontation with Xavier would be the culmination of everything they’d fought for. Each day felt heavier, the campus a strange battleground where whispers and glances reminded them of the storm brewing beneath the surface.

Finally, the day of the hearing arrived. The air was thick with tension as students gathered outside the administration building, murmurs filling the air. Rumors flew about what might happen, and security guards stood by the entrance, a stark reminder of the stakes.

Ramon, Violet, Lila, and Melina walked through the crowd, their expressions determined. Melina’s hands shook slightly, but she held her head high, steeling herself for the ordeal ahead.

Inside, the hearing room was filled with board members, professors, and a small number of students allowed to witness the proceedings. Dr. Thornton sat at the head of the table, her expression stern as she called the hearing to order.

The room fell silent as Xavier entered, his face composed but his eyes dark and cold. He glanced at Ramon, his gaze hardening with a mixture of anger and contempt. Ramon met his eyes, refusing to be intimidated.

Dr. Thornton began by summarizing the accusations against Xavier, listing the evidence that had been submitted, including the footage and Melina’s testimony. As she spoke, Xavier’s expression remained impassive, but Ramon could sense the barely restrained fury simmering beneath the surface.

When Dr. Thornton called Melina to testify, the tension in the room thickened. She took a deep breath and began to recount her experiences, describing Xavier’s manipulation, his threats, and the fear he instilled in his followers.

Xavier’s expression darkened with each word, and Ramon saw a flicker of something dangerous in his eyes.

When it was Xavier’s turn to respond, he rose from his seat, a smug smile playing at the corners of his mouth.

“Is this really what it’s come to?” he sneered, his voice dripping with disdain. “A witch hunt? Some twisted vendetta because you can’t handle the fact that some people actually respect my leadership?”

Ramon’s fists clenched, but he forced himself to stay calm, knowing that rising to Xavier’s bait would only weaken their case.

“You have manipulated and hurt people, Xavier,” Ramon said, his voice steady but firm. “This isn’t about respect. It’s about control and fear. You’ve crossed too many lines, and it’s time you faced the consequences.”

Xavier’s smile faltered, his eyes narrowing as he shot Ramon a glare. “You have no idea what you’re talking about. You think you’re some kind of hero? You’re nothing but a self-righteous fool.”

The board members exchanged glances, clearly taken aback by Xavier’s outburst. Dr. Thornton cleared her throat, her expression hardening.

“Mr. Xavier, please remember that this is a formal hearing,” she said sternly. “This is not the time for personal attacks.”

Xavier glowered at her but remained silent, his jaw clenched.

As the hearing continued, it became clear that the evidence against Xavier was overwhelming. The board members took notes, their expressions growing more serious with each passing minute. Ramon felt a glimmer of hope, sensing that they were finally being heard.

But just as Dr. Thornton began to wrap up the proceedings, the door burst open, and a group of Xavier’s followers stormed into the room, their faces set with determination. Ramon recognized a few of them from campus, students who had always lingered in Xavier’s shadow, hanging on his every word.

“This hearing is a farce!” one of them shouted, his voice shaking with anger. “Xavier is a respected leader, and you’re all too blind to see it!”

Dr. Thornton stood, her expression stern. “This is a formal proceeding. I must ask you to leave immediately.”

But the group ignored her, their defiance growing. “We won’t let you ruin him,” another student said, stepping forward. “Xavier has done more for us than any of you ever have.”

Tension crackled in the air as the security guards moved in, trying to defuse the situation. Ramon felt his heart pounding, knowing that the confrontation was spiraling out of control. He glanced at Violet and Lila, their faces pale but resolute, and he realized they were all ready to face whatever came next.

Xavier smirked, watching the chaos unfold with satisfaction. Ramon knew that, in his twisted mind, this was exactly what he wanted—a display of loyalty, a reminder of the influence he still wielded.

Dr. Thornton raised her voice, her tone firm. “Enough! This behavior only proves the point we’re making. Mr. Xavier’s actions have encouraged hostility and division on this campus, and it cannot be allowed to continue.”

The board members conferred briefly, their expressions grim, before the chairman addressed the room.

“After reviewing the evidence and witnessing today’s events, we have decided to uphold Mr. Xavier’s suspension. He will no longer be permitted on campus, effective immediately. Furthermore, his actions will be investigated by the appropriate authorities.”

A hush fell over the room as the decision sank in. Xavier’s followers exchanged stunned looks, their confidence shattered. Xavier’s face twisted in fury, and for a moment, Ramon thought he might lash out. But he simply turned on his heel and strode from the room, his expression a mask of cold rage.

As he left, Ramon felt a weight lift from his shoulders. They had won. Xavier’s reign of fear was finally over.

After the hearing, Ramon, Violet, and Lila gathered outside, the tension slowly melting into relief.

“We did it,” Lila whispered, a smile breaking across her face. “It’s finally over.”

Ramon nodded, his gaze drifting to the horizon. “It’s over for now. But we’ll have to stay vigilant.

Xavier might be gone, but his influence… it might linger for a while.”
