As soon as Vandread realized that the woman was no longer breathing, he eventually halted his search for a safer place and remained where he was. It was too late now even if he was to find somewhere safer for them to hide, because the woman he wanted to protect from harm had already passed away at this point.

In spite of the fact that he presented an outward appearance of composure, Vandread's inner state was one of utter devastation. He did not want to reveal the extent to which he was responsible for the way things had turned out.

Even though he had improved his physical abilities, increased his stamina, learned new skills, and acquired new powers, he was still unable to save the lives of the innocent, particularly the people he wanted to protect.

This woman was no exception to those people, including his parents. They all perished trying to protect him instead. It was starting to come to the forefront within Vandread's mind all over again, which adds even more fuel to the fire.
