RADS 4. First Encounter

Sam’s elation quickly turned to panic as gravity tightened its grip, sending Sam hurtling back toward the earth.

As he descended at breakneck speed, the wind whistling past his ears, Sam's eyes widened with a mixture of awe and terror. The vast horizon transformed into a blur of colors.

[It is recommended that you make a wind sphere.]

“How to do it?”

[Put your hands together in front of your chest and spread the magic energy outside your body.]

Sam followed the instruction and soon his energy flowed outside. He radiated his magic energy in an uncontrollable manner.

[Magic energy 85% 82% 79%]

“Stop calculating! Why am I still falling!”

[Now you need to move the wind to circle your body.]

“But how?”

[The system has no better explanation for this concept. Just use your instinct, that’s the nature of the sorcerer's way of magic.]

The system really got on Sam’s nerves, but he had more pressing matter right now.  Although the fall slowed down, it was only momentary. The system kept calculating the decrease in his magic energy, meaning he needed to learn how to create these wind balls before he ran out of energy or plummeted to the ground.

Sam saw the flow of his magic energy radiating from him like a ripple in water. So he tried to imagine the water starting to move in a spherical stream around his body and it worked. His magic energy followed his thought and started to form the wind sphere.

Sam fell down slower.

[Magic energy 77% 71% 65%]

“What?” Sam yelled. He released his hand. He understood that he had just used a significant amount of energy and from this high he would run out of energy before landing on the ground. He needs to time it properly when he is near the ground to decrease the speed significantly while saving his magic energy.

Sam let himself in free fall, but no longer panicked, he was very focused. Seventeen feet from the ground, Sam clapped his hand again. The response was immediate. A sphere of swirling wind manifested around him. The wind sphere gently cradling Sam as he descended, a delicate buffer against the impending impact. The descent, once a perilous freefall, transformed into a graceful descent

[Magic energy 59% 53% 47%]

Sam landed smoothly on the ground that had been carved by the strength of his wind sphere.

[Magic energy 41%]

[Do you want to register wind sphere as a new skill?]

“Yes. It’s very usefull. But I need better control of it.”

[New skill registered: Wind Sphere. The skill description has been added automatically by the system. Access skill information by command ‘skill name’ + ‘info’.]

“Wind Sphere info,” Sam said, testing if he understood how to interact with the system properly.

[Wind Sphere: Summons a multi-directional sphere of wind around yourself. Provides a buffer against fall damage. Can also block certain physical and magical attacks. Duration and strength depend on the user's magic energy. Use strategically to disperse falls or disrupt enemy movements. This skill needs 200 magic energy per second.]

“Whoah, you really make it sound like a game!”

[The system is created partly based on your preference.]

“Yeah, yeah, I know that. Now, let’s go to that city I’ve just seen.” The city castle beckoned in the distance, and with an eager stride, he set forth toward the promising unknown.

A few steps later, Sam tried to check more of the system's capabilities. “System, what do you know about the city?”

[You are headed to Rivenburgs City. Founded over five centuries ago, Rivenburgs City stands as a testament to the enduring legacy of the Flammenherz sorcerer's lineage. The city's genesis traces back to the vision of Lord Ignatius Flammenherz, a powerful sorcerer who sought to establish a haven for magic users and scholars. In a strategic move, Lord Ignatius selected the site for its proximity to mystical ley lines, enhancing the city's magical potential. The construction, initiated with a blend of arcane and mundane craftsmanship, spanned two decades, culminating in the grandeur that is Rivenburgs. Throughout its storied history, the Rivenburgs faced multiple sieges, the most notable being the Scorched Rebellion, a conflict born of ideological differences within the Flammenherz family. This internal strife-]

“Stop,” Sam said in a flat tone. He saw a weird dark-colored magic energy flow from behind the trees. A monstrous silhouette emerged from the shadow. It has the body of a big cat, with a black scorpion sting on its tail. Its head is that of a lion, but somehow it has some resemblance to a grotesque human face.

“It’s a manticore!” Sam smiled. He has only seen this kind of creature in mythological books, fantasy novels, comics, and video game. But now he encountered a living, breathing monster. His heart pounded with excitement and awe and a bit of fear.

Its form, already fearsome, bore additional demonic features. The unexpected encounter infused the air with tension, setting the stage for Sam's confrontation with this monstrous beast.

“System, can I also check stat of others?”

[Yes. Use the command ‘check’ on the specified subject to check its stat.]

“Che-wait … unhide, check.”

The screen pops up showing the manticore's stat, followed by an old man's voice from the system.

[This is the stat of the monster in front of you

Type: Demonic Manticore (?)

Danger level: ???

Speed: Medium

Endurance: High

Magic Energy: Low

Magic Resistance: Poison, Lightning

Known Abilities: Venomous Sting

This stat is an estimation based on the wizard's memory.]

“Estimation? Is that why there are a lot of question marks in that stat?” Sam yelled in frustration.

[Yes. What the system can provide now is simply the wizard memory presented to you in a more palatable way. If you want a more accurate result, you need to acquire the Arcane Insight skill.]

“Damn it! Why even the type has question marks?” Sam protested.

[Because this one is different from the variations that wizards generally encounter. It is estimated that this monster has demonic influence from a warlock. Approach with caution.]
